Sparse autoencoders (SAEs) split a model's internal activity into many sparse units, or latents, and a latent is often named after a concept when removing that concept from the input changes its activity. We identify a consequential confound in this inference: if removing the concept changes the input more than the comparison edit does, a larger response may reflect a larger edit rather than the concept. Brain-signal (electroencephalography, EEG) models provide a controlled test, because how much an edit changes the EEG input can be measured directly. We measure the SAE response as the change in how often each latent is active, averaged over all latents. Across 27 combinations of model, dataset, and layer, removing the 8--12 Hz alpha band changes this response 7.33 times as much as removing an equally wide 30--34 Hz control band, but it also changes the signal far more. Matching the two edits per trial on squared time-domain distortion lowers the mean ratio to 1.42, with 19 of 27 combinations above one. Matching thus substantially reduces, but does not eliminate, the alpha--control contrast. The residual supports relative sensitivity under this single control, not general spectral specificity or an individual alpha-representing latent. We use an evidence-to-claim map to separate what this comparison supports from stronger claims of specificity and feature semantics.

Speculative decoding (SD) accelerates large language model inference by reducing the sequential cost of token-by-token generation. Advanced SD methods reduce proposal cost with parallel drafters that predict entire blocks in one forward pass, but overall speedup still depends on acceptance length. On-policy distillation (OPD) can push well-trained drafters beyond acceptance-length plateaus, yet conventional pipelines collect supervision through sequential draft-and-verify rollouts. Our key insight is that on-policy supervision need not inherit these dependencies: a draft block can be supervised using only its reference prefix and draft-sampled history. We propose SpecOPD, a branch-parallel OPD framework that parallelizes draft sampling and target supervision across independent branches drawn from the evolving drafter policy at reference anchors. We pack these branches into proposal trees to share target-prefix computation, using tree masks for full attention, branch-consistent indexer groups for sparse attention, and indexed state replay for linear attention to preserve each branch's history. We train the drafter with an E2E-TV surrogate that directly targets acceptance length. Our study spans 8B full-attention (GQA), 27B full-linear (GQA--GDN), and 125B sparse-linear (QSA--GDN) targets, three parallel draft architectures (DFlash, DSpark, and DFlash V2), and four task domains (dialogue, coding, mathematics, and agentic). SpecOPD achieves up to 41.45% higher mean acceptance length, $16.09\times$ supervised-token throughput over sequential-rollout OPD under native configurations, and up to $3.56\times$ generation speedup over autoregressive decoding.
Estimating scene illumination from images is challenging as lighting is inherently spatially varying, depending on geometry, occlusion, and light sources. Existing methods incorporate geometric cues by deriving local environment maps or probe-based representations, but largely rely on regression or parametric models, resulting in over-smoothed lighting and limited realism. We revisit spatially-varying illumination estimation from a generative perspective and introduce LUMEN, a geometry-conditioned diffusion framework for synthesizing high-dynamic-range (HDR) environment maps at arbitrary spatial locations from single or multi-view images. Specifically, we reconstruct a coarse 3D scene from input images and render partial environment maps at arbitrary locations to encode visibility and spatial structure. These signals are fused with multi-view image features and fed into a diffusion transformer to generate full HDR environment maps. To train the model, we build a synthetic dataset of 700 indoor scenes with dense spatial supervision, including multi-view RGB images, depth, and HDR illumination at multiple sampled locations. This dataset enables the model to learn spatially consistent lighting distributions across diverse scenes. Extensive experiments demonstrate that LUMEN significantly improves visual fidelity and spatial coherence compared to prior approaches.
Agentic artificial intelligence (AI) systems hold immense potential for automating complex workflows in materials discovery and design, but extending these capabilities to domain-intensive mechanistic studies remains challenging. General grain boundaries (GBs) exemplify this challenge, as their structural complexity complicates experimental characterization and atomistic modeling. Here, we present GBClaw, an agentic AI framework for investigating the structure and deformation of general GBs, which are common in real polycrystals yet remain understudied. By integrating large language models into a modular architecture, GBClaw effectively combines systematic simulations with targeted mechanistic analysis through iterative workflow refinement and dynamic replanning. Applied to 14 general asymmetric tilt GBs in nickel, the framework characterized interfacial defect structures and deformation modes across these incommensurate boundaries. It established a general approach to identify previously unobserved, widely spaced secondary GB misfit dislocations (SGBMDs) alongside closely spaced primary GB misfit dislocations (PGBMDs) in simulated atomic configurations and experimental images. Comparisons of GB sliding with and without SGBMDs revealed substantial differences in shear strength, underscoring the critical role of misfit-dislocation hierarchies in sliding resistance. Researcher-guided follow-up calculations further elucidated the structural origins of shear asymmetry and an anomalous shear response. This work demonstrates that combining agentic AI with domain expertise bridges high-throughput computational screening and deep mechanistic discovery at complex material interfaces.

World Models (WMs) can support Multimodal Agents (MAs) through simulated experience, while Agent trajectories can inform World Model refinement. Evaluating this interaction requires separate evidence about action selection and state evolution. We introduce Dual Exam, which tests Agents under fixed environment response mechanisms and World Models under fixed action interventions across physical, digital, social, and scientific domains. The Agent track compares 10 configurations on 1,088 items in 15 reporting categories. The World Model track contains 400 cases across eight scenarios; 15 configurations have full coverage and one covers six scenarios. GPT 6 Astra leads the case-weighted Agent Index at 31.3, and GPT-Image-2 leads the full-coverage WM Overall at 21.7. These scores use different tasks and metrics and are not directly comparable. A 150-case pilot of one coupled pairing records zero task successes and motivates component-level diagnosis. Results reveal uneven task performance and failures to preserve task-relevant state. Their value for predicting coupled success or sustained reciprocal learning remains to be established.

Vision-language-action (VLA) policies can select among discrete candidates for pick-and-place manipulation or generate continuous action chunks for motion control. Improving both forms of decision making through a common mechanism while retaining the capabilities of a pretrained policy is an important adaptation problem. Inspired by Jev's structured, probabilistic decision interface, we propose JevVLA, a lightweight energy-based adaptation framework for VLA policies. JevVLA instantiates this inspiration by modeling the relative quality of action proposals: with the base policy frozen, it learns a differentiable scalar energy conditioned on observations, task context, and actions, using execution feedback, expert corrections, or demonstration-derived preferences. JevVLA uses this single learned action preference function in two ways: its values compare discrete candidates, while its action gradients correct continuous actions or guide their generation. Candidate selection and continuous control thus share one trainable decision core. Each benchmark uses independently trained weights and fixed input/output encodings, while retaining the same core network with approximately 80,000 trainable parameters. On the held-out test sets, JevVLA improves task success over the respective matched base-policy controls by 1.28, 2.31, 1.60, 1.52, and 1.28 percentage points on MetaWorld MT50, VIMA, LanguageTable, LIBERO Plus, and CLIPort, respectively. These results support the feasibility of a lightweight, Jev-inspired energy model for adapting both discrete action selection and continuous action guidance. The JevVLA implementation will be open-sourced at https://github.com/ZJU4EmbodiedAI/JevVLA.

Multimodal Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models have achieved remarkable performance on vision-language tasks. However, we identify a puzzling phenomenon termed Seeing but Not Thinking: models accurately perceive image content yet fail in subsequent reasoning, while correctly solving identical problems presented as pure text. Through systematic analysis, we first verify that cross-modal semantic sharing exists in MoE architectures, ruling out semantic alignment failure as the sole explanation. We then reveal that visual experts and domain experts exhibit layer-wise separation, with image inputs inducing significant routing divergence from text inputs in middle layers where domain experts concentrate. Based on these findings, we propose the Routing Distraction hypothesis: when processing visual inputs, the routing mechanism fails to adequately activate task-relevant reasoning experts. To validate this hypothesis, we design a routing-guided intervention method that enhances domain expert activation. Experiments on three multimodal MoE models across six benchmarks demonstrate consistent improvements, with gains of up to 3.17% on complex visual reasoning tasks. Our analysis further reveals that domain expert identification locates cognitive functions rather than sample-specific solutions, enabling effective transfer across tasks with different information structures.

Recent advances in reasoning models have demonstrated remarkable capabilities on mathematical and coding tasks. However, their effectiveness in embodied domains, where the agent must continuously interact with environments and process observation-action interleaved trajectories, remains largely unexplored. We present Embodied-Reasoner, a reasoning model for interactive embodied tasks. Unlike mathematical reasoning that relies primarily on logical deduction, embodied scenarios demand spatial understanding, temporal reasoning, and ongoing self-reflection based on interaction history. To address these challenges, we synthesize 9.3k coherent Observation-Thought-Action trajectories containing 64k ego-centric images and 90k diverse reasoning processes (analysis, spatial reasoning, reflection, planning, and verification). We develop a three-stage training recipe that progressively enhances the model’s capabilities through imitation learning, rejection sampling tuning on self-exploration trajectories, and reflection tuning. The evaluation shows that our model significantly outperforms advanced visual reasoning models, e.g., exceeds OpenAI o1, o3-mini, and Claude-3.7 by +9%, 24%, and +13%. Analysis reveals that our model exhibits fewer repeated searches and logical inconsistencies, with particular advantages in complex long-horizon tasks. Real-world testing further validates the effectiveness of our approach.

GUI agents have demonstrated remarkable progress in automating complex user interface interactions. However, training such agents for long-horizon tasks remains challenging. Single-turn reinforcement learning conditions on expert histories during training but self-generated histories during deployment, causing distribution mismatch. Online multi-turn methods eliminate this gap via environment interaction but suffer from sparse rewards and prohibitive costs. We propose \underline{\textbf{E}}xperience-driven \underline{\textbf{M}}ulti-turn \underline{\textbf{P}}olicy \underline{\textbf{O}}ptimization (\textbf{EMPO}), which leverages expert trajectories as environment experiences for on-policy multi-turn training. The agent constructs self-generated history throughout rollouts; when actions match expert experiences, the trajectory provides valid state transitions, and a Patch Module recovers mismatched steps to maintain on-policy rollouts. EMPO further incorporates discounted future rewards and dual-level advantage estimation to capture long-horizon dependencies. We also propose \textbf{AndroidControl-Real}, an evaluation metric strongly correlated with real-world performance (R^2=0.934). With only 1K public trajectories as RL experiences, our method achieves substantial gains over the base model (e.g., +12.0% on AndroidWorld and +23.8% on AITW) and achieves competitive performance against strong baselines such as UI-TARS-7B and GPT-4o, demonstrating better generalization than prior single-turn RL approaches. MLLM-based GUI agents have demonstrated strong capabilities in complex user interface interaction tasks. However, long-horizon scenarios remain challenging, as these agents are burdened with tasks beyond their intrinsic capabilities, suffering from memory degradation, progress confusion, and math hallucination. To address these challenges, we present \textbf{UI-Copilot}, a collaborative framework where the GUI agent focuses on task execution while a lightweight copilot provides on-demand assistance for memory retrieval and numerical computation. We introduce memory decoupling to separate persistent observations from transient execution context, and train the policy agent to selectively invoke the copilot as Retriever or Calculator based on task demands. To enable effective tool invocation learning, we propose \underline{\textbf{T}}ool-\underline{\textbf{I}}ntegrated \underline{\textbf{P}}olicy \underline{\textbf{O}}ptimization (\textbf{TIPO}), which separately optimizes tool selection through single-turn prediction and task execution through on-policy multi-turn rollouts. Experimental results show that UI-Copilot-7B achieves state-of-the-art performance on challenging MemGUI-Bench, outperforming strong 7B-scale GUI agents such as GUI-Owl-7B and UI-TARS-1.5-7B. Moreover, UI-Copilot-7B delivers a 17.1% absolute improvement on AndroidWorld over the base Qwen model, highlighting UI-Copilot’s strong generalization to real-world GUI tasks. Recent studies integrate Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) and Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) to further enhance the performance of parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) methods in Large Language Model (LLM) applications. Existing methods employ homogeneous MoE-LoRA architectures composed of LoRA experts with either similar or identical structures and capacities. However, these approaches often suffer from representation collapse and expert load imbalance, which negatively impact the potential of LLMs. To address these challenges, we propose a heterogeneous Mixture-of-Adapters (MoA) approach. This method dynamically integrates PEFT adapter experts with diverse structures, leveraging their complementary representational capabilities to foster expert specialization, thereby enhancing the effective transfer of pre-trained knowledge to downstream tasks. MoA supports two variants: (i) Soft MoA achieves fine-grained integration by performing a weighted fusion of all expert outputs; (ii) Sparse MoA activates adapter experts sparsely based on their contribution, achieving this with negligible performance degradation. Experimental results demonstrate that heterogeneous MoA outperforms homogeneous MoE-LoRA methods in both performance and parameter efficiency. Our project is available at https://github.com/DCDmllm/MoA.
