Learning Fourier-Sparse Signals and Multiband Signals

Dongrun Cai, Xue Chen, Xiaowei Shao, Yile Wang

原文摘要

A classical problem in continuous sparse Fourier transforms, which dates back to Prony's work in 1795, is to learn a $k$-Fourier-sparse signal $x(t):=\sum_{j=1}^k α_j e^{2 π\mathbf{i} f_j t}$ with arbitrary $k$ frequencies $f_1,\ldots,f_k \in \mathbb{R}$. We consider this learning problem within a fixed time window $t \in [-1,1]$ in the presence of bounded $L_2$ adversarial noise. Because the frequencies $f_1,\ldots,f_k$ can be arbitrarily close, accurately recovering individual frequencies is information-theoretically impossible even under exponentially small noise from Moitra (STOC 2015). This work therefore examines two fundamental questions: If an algorithm uses $\tilde{O}(k)$ frequencies to approximate $f_1,\ldots,f_k$ of $x$, what is the optimal covering error? And how can we efficiently learn the continuous signal $x(t)$ as a whole over the time window? Our main result is an algorithm running in time $\tilde{O}(k)$ that outputs a list $L$ of $\tilde{O}(k)$ frequencies with covering error $O(k)$ --- meaning that for most frequencies $f_j$ of $x$, $L$ guarantees $\min_{\tilde{f} \in L} |f_j-\tilde{f}| = O(k)$ --- and an reconstruction $\tilde{x}(t) \approx x(t)$ over $[-1,1]$. When constrained to outputting $\tilde{O}(k)$ frequencies, this $O(k)$ covering error is nearly optimal: Chen and Price (ICALP 2019) demonstrated two indistinguishable $k$-Fourier-sparse signals separated by distance $\tildeΩ(k^2)$ in the frequency domain, which implies an amortized lower bound of $\tildeΩ(k)$ per frequency. Furthermore, our sample and time complexities are nearly optimal, dramatically improving upon the previous best algorithm by Song, Sun, Weinstein, and Zhang (FOCS 2023), which required $\tilde{O}(k^4)$ samples and $\tilde{O}(k^{4ω})$ running time.

Nearly Optimal Submodular Sparsification, with and without Cardinality Constraints

Zhengting Bao, Dongrun Cai, Xue Chen, Yuchen He, Chihao Zhang

原文摘要

We study the sparsification of decomposable submodular functions: given a sum $F(S) = \sum_{i=1}^m f_i(S)$ of $m$ nonnegative submodular functions on an $n$-element ground set $[n]$ (without assuming monotonicity or symmetry), the goal is to find a sparse reweighting $\widetilde{F}(S) = \sum_{i=1}^m w_i f_i(S)$ with at most $s \ll m$ nonzero weights that preserves $F(S)$ within a $(1 \pm \varepsilon)$ factor across a target family of queries. For all subset queries $S \subseteq [n]$, we give a polynomial-time randomized algorithm that constructs a sparsifier of size $O(n^2 \log n / \varepsilon^2)$. This improves upon the previous best upper bound of $O(n^3 / \varepsilon^2)$ by Kenneth and Krauthgamer and resolves their open conjecture up to a logarithmic factor, matching the $Ω(n^2)$ lower bound from directed cuts. Motivated by capacity budgets in submodular applications and the Restricted Isometry Property (RIP) in compressed sensing, we further study submodular sparsification under a cardinality constraint $|S| \le k$, and obtain a polynomial-time algorithm that constructs a sparsifier of size $O(n k \log n / \varepsilon^2)$, nearly matching the $Ω(nk)$ lower bound. This shows that a cardinality constraint unconditionally reduces the size of general submodular sparsifiers by a factor of roughly $k/n$; we complement this with $Ω(n)$ lower bounds showing that even regular symmetric or almost-regular monotone submodular functions cannot be sparsified to $o(n)$ size for $k = 2$ and $k = 1$, respectively.

LLMCodec: Adapting Video Codecs for Efficient Weight Compression of Large Language Models

Rui Wang, Yan Zhao, Li Song, Zhengxue Cheng

原文摘要

The rapid development of large language models(LLMs) has led to remarkable advances in natural language processing. However, the increasing scale of these models introduces substantial challenges in terms of storage, transmission, and deployment. Though great efforts have been devoted to model compression and quantization, existing methods often rely on fine-tuning or calibration data, which exhibit limited generalization across different tensor types. In this paper, we argue that video codecs offer a promising solution for LLM compression, due to their inherent compatibility with matrix structured data, configurable compression strategies, and the availability of highly optimized, off-the-shelf implementations. Therefore, we present LLMCodec, a video codec-based LLM compression method that integrates affine quantization with the recent VVC/H.266 video codec. Beyond VVC, we further compare a range of video codecs and encoding profiles to evaluate their impact on compression performance. Experiments on different models demonstrate the robustness and generality of LLMCodec. Notably, on LLaMA-3-8B at 2-bit precision, LLMCodec reduces perplexity by over 1.5x and improves downstream task accuracy by 21% compared with the existing method.

AwarenessBench: Assessing Cognitive Capabilities of Language Models

原文摘要

As language models (LMs) exhibit increasingly consciousness-like behaviors, evaluating their cognitive abilities becomes essential. We introduce AwarenessBench, the first comprehensive benchmark for assessing the cognitive abilities of LMs in four dimensions: metacognition, self-awareness, social awareness, and situational awareness, covering 15 cognitive functions and 14,381 samples. Evaluating 18 state-of-the-art LMs, we find that all consistently surpass random baselines, with more advanced models performing better. We further compare LMs with human performance across three demographic groups, where the best-performing model surpasses human averages overall, but most still fall markedly short in metacognition and self-awareness. Finally, we show that awareness is a distinct capability: progress in language modeling or reasoning does not necessarily translate into improved cognition.
