Compounding Physical RSI: Turning Execution Failure into Inherited Capability

Yixuan Yang, Qiang Chen, Run Shao, Shuwei Dong, Wenhao Li, Yunpeng Wang, Wenhan Fang, Haomiao Wu 等 34 位作者

Generalist robot policies are trained on static offline datasets, yet physical manipulation unfolds sequentially across stages. Because a weakness in a downstream stage remains unobservable until the policy passes earlier ones, each resolved bottleneck exposes the next hidden failure mode. This staged structure calls for Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI), in which a policy iteratively executes, diagnoses failures, and updates itself. Moreover, because task completion behaves like a product of stage-level pass rates, recursive gains can multiply across generations. In physical environments, three bottlenecks obstruct compounding: terminal execution feedback rarely localizes the stage that caused a failure, failed trajectories do not supply the corrective action, and updating shared parameters can degrade previously mastered skills. We propose Compounding Physical RSI, a self-evolving policy framework that turns execution failures into heritable capability. First, automated capability-gap assessment traces failed rollouts to the task stage where progression breaks down and formulates a structured improvement objective. Second, conditioned on this objective, our remedy stage curates validated, stage-relevant experience and refines the policy via behavior-regularized offline reinforcement learning, without requiring costly online rollouts at each optimization step. Third, to safeguard existing skills, our retention stage constructs weight-space candidates between the inherited reference policy and the refined policy, evaluates them across the task suite, and promotes the best candidate as the reference state for the next generation. Evaluated across all 42 tasks of the RoboDojo-Sim benchmark, CSU-AI-07 ranks first on the leaderboard with a three-seed mean Overall Score of 26.15 and Success Rate of 20.70%, outperforming the next-best entry by 5.92 points and 5.82 percentage points.

EmoReward: Self-Evolving Reward Calibration for Emotional Video Generation RL

Mingzhe Zheng, Yue Wu, Jing Tan, Chang Zou, Dengyang Jiang, Zeyue Tian, Xuanhua He, Ryan Xu 等 22 位作者

Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) has advanced generative model post-training in verifiable domains such as code and mathematics, but evaluating video quality, especially emotional expression, often depends on subjective aesthetics and has no uniquely correct target. Existing approaches typically rely on fixed rewards for visual quality, motion quality, and text alignment that poorly capture emotional intent and can invite reward hacking, while RLHF is difficult to scale and subject to individual aesthetic differences that complicate the calibration of facial, body motion, and chromatic cues across narrative contexts. We introduce EmoReward, a new self-evolving training mechanism that distills evidence reliability from reward traces collected during an actual training run to adaptively guide multi-reward weight allocation in subsequent training by determining which emotional evidence to trust and how much to weight it. EmoReward first plans specific grounding cues from the emotional prompt to guide evaluation, then uses heterogeneous signal primitives to score the generated video during the act stage. Reflective Reward Gating calibrates their contributions through instance-level gates for phase, face confidence, conflict, and subtlety, then renormalizes weights over the active set to produce the sample's fused reward. RewardMemory then estimates each primitive's reliability from rollout scores and outcomes within each emotional regime in the finished training run, then fixes bounded multipliers that calibrate fusion weights in the next training run without updating reward models. Experiments on HunyuanVideo 1.5 show improvements across multiple RL algorithms and compare EmoReward with other agentic reward methods under SAGE-GRPO. Ablations and transfer experiments on SD 3.5 and FLUX further support adaptive reward calibration for visual generation.

Think Less, Locally: Local Preference Learning for Reasoning Compression

Muyao Yuan, Liyan Xu, Weizhan Zhang, Muyan Jiao, Jiangnan Li, Jinchao Zhang, Jie Zhou

Large reasoning models achieve strong performance on challenging tasks, but their long chain-of-thought often incurs substantial inference costs by continuing to deliberate after sufficient information has been obtained. Existing reasoning compression methods primarily operate on reasoning trajectories, paying less attention to the local decision of whether further reasoning is necessary given the current state. We propose LoCo, a local preference learning method for reasoning compression. LoCo detects candidate overthinking states from the model's own traces, freezes the corresponding reasoning prefixes, regenerates shorter verified continuations from the same states, and trains on the resulting state-conditioned preference pairs with DPO. This formulation teaches the model when to continue reasoning and when to conclude, rather than simply encouraging shorter trajectories overall. We construct training data entirely from self-generated mathematical traces and evaluate LoCo on five mathematical and three code generation benchmarks. LoCo reduces completion length by 41.7\%--45.4\% on mathematics and 23.4\%--36.3\% on code, while maintaining or improving accuracy and achieving the best AUC across all code benchmarks. LoCo consistently improves the accuracy-efficiency trade-off on mathematics and transfers effectively to code generation despite math-only training, demonstrating the cross-domain generality of local preference learning for reasoning compression. The code and model will be publicly released at https://github.com/MuyaoYuan/LoCo.

从自身错误中检索:面向多跳检索增强生成的自策略嵌入模型训练

Retrieving from Your Own Mistakes: On-Policy Training of Embedding Models for Multi-Hop Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Chenjie Qiu, Zixuan Zeng, Shaobin Shi, Bingfeng Chen, Dongsheng Luo, Boyan Xu

AI 速览:提出自策略状态训练方法,让链式嵌入检索器在自身产生的错误状态上训练,从而更完整地检索多跳证据。

Complex questions in retrieval-augmented generation require evidence spread over several documents, and an answer is reliable only when the retriever finds all of it. Chain embedding retrievers collect such evidence step by step, re-encoding the question together with the passages retrieved so far, and we find that they are already strong: trained only on gold histories, a small chain embedding retriever that calls no language model outperforms graph-based systems and is competitive with a search agent. This training, however, leaves a gap. At test time the retriever conditions on its own retrievals, which soon contain mistakes: by the third step, about half or more of the states it visits hold a wrong passage, and these passages lower its chance of retrieving a missing gold passage well beyond what the difficulty of the states explains. We propose on-policy state training, which trains the encoder on the states it reaches itself. At every epoch the current encoder retrieves chains for the training questions; each state it visits, including those built on its own mistakes, is labeled with the earliest gold passage still missing while the other missing gold passages are masked, so that no correct continuation is penalized; and the encoder is updated contrastively on these states mixed with teacher-forced ones, so that its training distribution follows it as it learns. The resulting retriever retrieves complete evidence more often than teacher-forced training and the systems we compare, and it transfers without further training to harder long-chain variants of HotpotQA and 2WikiMultiHopQA that we construct. On the same states, it recovers from its own mistakes far more often, and controlled comparisons attribute the gain to training on the states the encoder currently reaches.

PIVOT: Bridging Planning and Execution in LLM Agents via Trajectory Refinement

Tuo Zhang, Alin-Ionut Popa, Yan Xu, Rui Song, Dimitrios Dimitriadis

Large language model (LLM)-based agents frequently generate seemingly coherent plans that fail upon execution due to infeasible actions, constraint violations, and compounding errors over extended horizons. PIVOT (Plan-Inspect-eVOlve Trajectories) addresses this plan-execution misalignment through a self-supervised framework that treats trajectories as optimizable objects iteratively refined via environment interaction. The framework comprises four stages: PLAN generates candidate trajectories; INSPECT executes them and computes structured losses with textual gradients encoding plan-execution discrepancies; EVOLVE applies these signals to produce improved trajectories; and VERIFY performs a final global check against task constraints. A monotonic acceptance process ensures a non-decreasing solution quality. Empirical evaluations on DeepPlanning and GAIA demonstrate state-of-the-art performance: with human-in-the-loop (HITL) feedback, PIVOT establishes a strong upper bound up to 94% relative improvement in constraint satisfaction, while its fully autonomous variant retains substantial gains, showing that the core trajectory-refinement mechanism remains effective without external supervision. At the same time, PIVOT remains computationally efficient, requiring up to 3x to 5x fewer tokens than competing refinement methods. These findings establish that (self- or human-supervised) feedback-based trajectory optimization is a principled methodology for mitigating plan-execution gaps in autonomous agent systems.

ChemReason-Bench: Benchmarking Large Language Models for Procedural Reasoning in Experimental Chemistry

Jinwei Zhang, Xucheng Liang University of Southern California, Yu Zhang, Ruijie Yu, Xiaokang Yang Shanghai Jiaotong University, Yaohui Jin Shanghai Jiaotong University, Yanyan Xu Shanghai Jiaotong University

Experimental protocols in organic synthesis specify not only the intended transformation but also an executable sequence of operations and conditions. While recent language models show strong chemistry knowledge, widely used evaluations remain less diagnostic of procedure-level decision making. In this setting, correctness requires consistent step ordering, feasibility under stated conditions, faithful entity-role grounding, and schema-parseable outputs that can be automatically validated against operational constraints. We present ChemReason-Bench, a human-validated benchmark for verifiable experimental procedure reasoning built on a structured representation with explicit placeholders and a unified schema, enabling automatic checks of many operational constraints. From 500 reactions, we instantiate 7306 benchmark tasks across six complementary formats: ordering, step validation, condition validation, schema-constrained completion, contrastive choice, and evidence-grounded rationalization. We further release a large-scale instantiation of the same templates for downstream adaptation studies, kept disjoint from the evaluation set. Using a unified evaluation protocol, we benchmark diverse open-source, proprietary, and domain-specific models and observe clear variation across the capability surface. We also report controlled adaptation experiments in the appendix, where supervised fine-tuning improves small models, preference optimization adds limited gains in our setting, and a gap remains to the strongest evaluated systems.

MMErroR: A Benchmark for Erroneous Reasoning in Vision-Language Models

Yang Shi, Yifeng Xie Hong Kong Baptist University, Minzhe Guo, Liangsi Lu, Mingxuan Huang, Jingchao Wang, Zhihong Zhu Tencent, Boyan Xu 等 9 位作者

Recent advances in Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have improved performance in multi-modal learning, raising the question of whether these models truly understand the content they process. Crucially, can VLMs detect when a reasoning process is wrong and identify its error type? To answer this, we present MMErroR, a multi-modal benchmark of 1997 samples, each embedding a single coherent reasoning error. These samples span 24 subdomains across six top-level domains, ensuring broad coverage and taxonomic richness. Unlike existing benchmarks that focus on answer correctness, MMErroR targets a process-level, error-centric evaluation that requires models to detect incorrect reasoning and classify the error type within both visual and linguistic contexts. We evaluate 12 representative VLMs, and even the best model, Gemini-3-Pro-Preview, classifies the error correctly in only 66.65% of cases, underscoring the challenge of identifying erroneous reasoning. Furthermore, the ability to accurately identify errors offers valuable insights into the capabilities of multi-modal models.Project Page: https://mmerror-benchmark.github.io

Rose-SQL: Role-State Evolution Guided Structured Reasoning for Multi-Turn Text-to-SQL

Le Zhou, Feng Yao National University of Defense Technology, Fengcai Qiao, Bo Xu, Fangyuan Wang Institute of automation, Chinese academy of science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Boyan Xu

Recent advances in Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) trained with Long Chain-of-Thought have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in code generation and mathematical reasoning. However, their potential in multi-turn Text-to-SQL tasks remains largely underexplored. Existing approaches typically rely on unstable API-based inference or require expensive fine-tuning on small-scale models. In this work, we present Rose-SQL, a training-free framework that leverages small-scale LRMs through in-context learning to enable accurate context-dependent parsing. We introduce the Role-State, a fine-grained representation that bridges the structural gap between schema linking and SQL generation by serving as a structural blueprint. To handle conversational dependencies, Rose-SQL traces the evolution of Role-State through historical context via structural isomorphism checks, guiding the model to infer the possible SQL composition for the current question through verified interaction trajectories. Experiments on the SParC and CoSQL benchmarks show that, within the Qwen3 series, Rose-SQL outperforms in-context learning baselines at the 4B scale and substantially surpasses state-of-the-art fine-tuned models at the 8B and 14B scales, while showing consistent gains on additional reasoning backbones.

Discover and Prove: An Open-source Agentic Framework for Hard Mode Automated Theorem Proving in Lean 4

Chengwu Liu, Yichun Yin Huawei Noah's Ark Lab, Ye Yuan, Jiaxuan Xie Peking University, Botao Li, Siqi Li, Jianhao Shen, Yan Xu Tencent 等 10 位作者

Most ATP benchmarks embed the final answer within the formal statement — a convention we call “Easy Mode” — a design that simplifies the task relative to what human competitors face and may lead to optimistic estimates of model capability. We call the stricter, more realistic setting “Hard Mode”: the system must independently discover the answer before constructing a formal proof. To enable Hard Mode research, we make two contributions.First, we release MiniF2F-Hard and FIMO-Hard, expert-reannotated Hard Mode variants of two widely-used ATP benchmarks.Second, we introduce Discover And Prove (DAP), an agentic framework that uses LLM natural-language reasoning with explicit self-reflection to discover answers, then rewrites Hard Mode statements into Easy Mode ones for existing ATP provers.DAP sets the state of the art: on CombiBench it raises solved problems from 7 (previous SOTA, Pass@16) to 10; on PutnamBench it is the first system to formally prove 36 theorems in Hard Mode — while simultaneously revealing that state-of-the-art LLMs exceed 80% answer accuracy on the same problems where formal provers manage under 10%, exposing a substantial gap that Hard Mode benchmarks are uniquely suited to measure.

LLM-as-Scheduler: Agentic Workflow Dynamic Scheduling

Dawei Xiang University of Connecticut, Kexin Chu, Wenyan Xu, Wenhui Zhang ByteDance Inc., Wei Zhang University of Connecticut

As large language models (LLMs) improve, many applications are moving from a single LLM call to multi-agent systems. These systems often rely on either hand-designed or automatically optimized workflows with multiple verification and testing steps. While those extra steps can improve accuracy, they also increase latency and token costs. In practice, many queries do not need such heavy processing and can be handled well by a single strong agent. To address this inefficiency, we propose LLM-as-Scheduler (LAS), a system that dynamically chooses the right workflow for each query. LAS uses a two-stage cascade: first, a lightweight gate quickly evaluates each agent’s output; then, an LLM-based scheduler uses query features and gate signals to make more detailed routing decisions. Experiments show that LAS cuts token usage by 43% and reduces end-to-end latency by more than 36%, while causing at most a 1.4 percentage-point drop in accuracy compared with a strong fixed workflow.

Situated Embedding Models for Context-Aware Dense Retrieval

Junjie Wu HKUST, Jiangnan Li WeChat, Tencent Inc., Yuqing Li, Lemao Liu, Liyan Xu WeChat AI, Tencent, Jiwei Li Stanford University, Dit-Yan Yeung Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Jie Zhou 等 9 位作者

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) over long documents typically involves splitting the text into smaller chunks, which serve as the basic units for retrieval. However, due to dependencies across the original document, contextual information is often essential for accurately interpreting each chunk. To address this, prior work has explored encoding longer context windows to produce embeddings for longer chunks, yet their gains in retrieval and downstream tasks remain limited. This is because (1) longer chunks strain the capacity of embedding models due to the increased amount of information they must encode, and (2) many real-world applications still require returning localized evidence due to constraints on model or human bandwidth. To this end, we propose an alternative approach to this challenge by representing short chunks in a way that is conditioned on a broader context window to enhance retrieval performance – i.e., situating a chunk’s meaning within its context. We further show that existing embedding models are not well-equipped to encode such situated context effectively, and thus introduce a new training paradigm and develop the first situated embedding model. To evaluate our method, we curate a book-plot retrieval dataset specifically designed to assess situated retrieval capabilities. On this benchmark, our 1B-parameter model substantially outperforms state-of-the-art embedding models, including several with up to 7B parameters.

AI 速览:提出分层多智能体框架 Co-Director,将视频叙事生成形式化为全局优化问题,以缓解链式生成中的语义漂移与级联失败。

While diffusion models generate high-fidelity video clips, transforming them into coherent storytelling engines remains challenging. Current agentic pipelines automate this via chained modules but suffer from semantic drift and cascading failures due to independent, handcrafted prompting. We present Co-Director, a hierarchical multi-agent framework formalizing video storytelling as a global optimization problem. To ensure semantic coherence, we introduce hierarchical parameterization: a multi-armed bandit globally identifies promising creative directions, while a local multimodal self-refinement loop mitigates identity drift and ensures sequence-level consistency. This balances the exploration of novel narrative strategies with the exploitation of effective creative configurations. For evaluation, we introduce GenAD-Bench, a 400-scenario dataset of fictional products for personalized advertising. Experiments demonstrate that Co-Director significantly outperforms state-of-the-art baselines, offering a principled approach that seamlessly generalizes to broader cinematic narratives.
