Before the Next Rollout: Diagnosing Skill Utility Shifts from Policy Updates

Yifan Wang, Zhenyi Gai, Yiwen Zhao, Mingxuan Jiang, Keyang Chen, Zeping Li, Hongfeng Chai, Yixin Cao

Skill-evolution methods typically analyze execution trajectories to guide agent skill refinement. However, policy updates can change the behavioral effects and marginal utility of an unchanged skill. Attribution based on earlier trajectories may therefore no longer reflect the skill's contribution under the updated policy. Moreover, trajectory failures can arise from multiple factors, making individual skill contributions difficult to isolate. We evaluate whether policy-update signals contain predictive information about changes in skill marginal utility. At fixed contexts from pre-update training rollouts, we measure how policy updates change the contrast in token preferences between skill and control conditions. Combining these interaction shifts with advantage estimates yields reward-directed readouts for diagnosing utility changes. The readouts reuse existing training rollouts and require only forward passes for single-step action scoring, without additional post-update rollout evaluation. Our experiments show that policy updates can alter skill marginal utility and that policy-update readouts carry diagnostic information for identifying skills with declining utility. Integrating readout-guided prioritization into skill evolution improves downstream performance while reducing policy and editor token consumption.

Autonomous Quantum Measurement with Agentic AI

Eunbi Rha, Abhijatmedhi Chotrattanapituk, Mouyang Cheng, Chung-tao Chou, Shenyong Ye, Ashley S. Dale, Long Ju, Luqiao Liu 等 9 位作者

Quantum materials exhibit diverse electronic and functional phenomena, but their characterization requires extensive experimental expertise, iterative decision-making and accumulated laboratory knowledge that is difficult to document and transfer. Here we introduce Quantum Agent (QUANTA), an agentic artificial intelligence (AI) framework for autonomous quantum-materials characterization. Using a widely adopted Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) as an experimental platform, QUANTA combines retrieval augmentation using scientific literature, experimental protocols and prior measurements with specialized agents for experimental planning, troubleshooting, and data interpretation. A separate deterministic control layer validates instrument actions. Guided by incoming data, QUANTA evaluates measurement quality, revises experimental plans and selects subsequent measurements. We demonstrate these capabilities through transport measurements of the topological Weyl semimetal TaP, as well as investigations of nonlinear responses in magnetic material Co2MnGa. These results establish QUANTA as a generalizable framework for evidence-driven, safeguarded and closed-loop quantum-materials characterization.

Floor It, Then Fill It: Simulating Creator Ecosystems for Fair Video-Content Recommendation Systems at Billion User Scale

Sohini Roychowdhury, Long Sha, Sunand Agarwal, Payal Kamboj, Shuyang Chen, Junlin Zhang, Scott Chen, Hui Zhang

Engagement-optimized content recommendation systems exhibit a well-documented rich-get-richer dynamic that structurally disadvantages emerging creators on large-scale platforms. Evaluating debiasing interventions at scale demands faithful simulation of creator-viewer ecosystems, yet the fidelity, diversity, and validity of such simulators remain underexplored. We present a grounded user-simulation framework that models a heterogeneous population of ${\sim}42$K creators and their coupled viewer interactions over 12~weeks, and use it to evaluate equitable view-allocation policies formulated as a budgeted multi-armed bandit (MAB). The simulator captures three behavioral dimensions: (i)~\textbf{creator diversity}, modeled via a clustering approach grounded in real platform creator-level distributions; (ii)~\textbf{behavioral fidelity}, captured through coupled creator-content state machines that represent growth trajectories, engagement accumulation, and graduation dynamics; and (iii)~\textbf{population-level validity}, measured by calibration against observed platform metrics. We evaluate simulative-configurations that vary content-viewership target definitions, reward functions, and a small-creator reserve lever to maximize creator-content recommendation equity. A floor-protected per content-view-target with a view-parity-gap reward guarantees 90\% of view targets being met by creators every week, grows small-creator organic reach ${\sim}{+}33\%$ per week, and achieves high distribution stability (set of creators with funded-views Jaccard $= 0.819$). We analyze the Sim2Real gap and propose validation protocols, contributing evidence for when simulation-derived fairness conclusions can be trusted.

We introduce Nemotron 3.5 Super and Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, open and efficient Mixture-of-Experts Hybrid Mamba-Transformer models designed for reasoning, long-context understanding, and agentic workloads. Super is a 120B-parameter, 12B-active multimodal model, while Lightning is a smaller 30B-parameter, 3B-active text model; both designed for efficient deployment. Both models combine large-scale distillation, long-context training, and native speculative decoding, while Super further incorporates Indic continued pretraining and agentic software-engineering mid-training. We develop a comprehensive post-training pipeline spanning supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning (RLVR and RLHF), complemented in Super by specialized teacher training and multi- teacher on-policy distillation (MOPD). This transforms Super from a text-only base model into a multimodal agent capable of reasoning over text, images, video, and interactive tool environments. We further explore test-time scaling through parallel agent execution and self-verification. Across training and deployment, we jointly optimize capability and efficiency. Indic continued pretraining improves Indian-language benchmarks by up to 9.82 percentage points, while agentic mid-training strengthens software-engineering capabilities and robustness across agent harnesses. The post-trained Super model achieves 51.78% on SWE-bench Pro, surpassing Nemotron 3 Ultra despite using approximately 4.6x fewer active parameters. Post-training MTP boosting improves speculative- decoding acceptance length by up to 21.8% under probabilistic draft sampling, while NVFP4 quantization achieves 99.62% median accuracy recovery relative to BF16. Inference optimizations enable up to 4,856 output tokens/s/GPU on GB200 while sustaining at least 50 tokens/s/user.

From Interaction to Capability: Task Advancement as State and Supervision for GUI Agents

Ziyang Chen, Qian Li, Chengwei Qin

GUI memory should preserve the results of past actions and learn reusable operations. This is difficult in long-horizon workflows, where agents must use information across applications and useful operations are interleaved with failed attempts. We introduce Task Advancement Memory (TAM), which defines task advancement as verified task progress, and supports ongoing task execution and learns reusable operations. During execution, Task Advancement State represents how verified task progress changes the remaining goals, allowing the agent to build on earlier achievements across applications. After each task, advancement supervision identifies and abstracts the interactions that produced a verified local result. The learned operations preserve the relation between required inputs, expected outcomes, and verification conditions. This retains locally successful operations from both successful and failed tasks. On MobileWorld GUI-only tasks, Advancement State alone raises success from 12.0% to 28.2%. Full TAM achieves a 17.6% relative gain in task success over the strongest evaluated baseline and reduces lifecycle tokens per solved task by 38.7%. On SPA-Bench, TAM achieves state-of-the-art task success in the single-app English Level 3 setting.

WorkFactory: Turning Professional Intents into Executable Work for Scalable Agent Training

Ziyang Zeng, Tingyang Chen, Jia Deng, Qiyao Wang, Shuo Tang, Yike Yang, Tao Ren, Wayne Xin Zhao 等 13 位作者

Scaling supervised training for working agents requires diverse professional tasks that yield reliable expert demonstrations. However, missing or inconsistent task information can obstruct teacher execution and weaken the resulting supervision. We propose WorkFactory, a scalable framework for constructing coherent and executable professional tasks. Starting from professional intents, information-level planning builds an information support graph to guide task instantiation, explicitly representing the dependencies and locations of information required for the intended outputs. Probe executions then identify support failures and guide repairs while preserving the intended work. We construct 112,686 tasks spanning 612 occupations and use the collected teacher trajectories to fine-tune Qwen models at 4B, 27B, and 35B-A3B scales, yielding the WorkPilot family. All three models improve over their respective base models across four professional-work benchmarks, with WorkPilot-35B-A3B improving from 879 to 1565 Elo on GDPval-AA v2.1. Scaling analyses reveal model-dependent diminishing returns, with execution length first increasing and then decreasing. Controlled component analyses show that planning and repair reduce probe-diagnosed task environment defects and improve downstream performance. The data and models are available at https://github.com/IQuestLab/WorkFactory.

AC-JEPA: Anchored Cross-Modal Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture for Visual-to-Symbolic Translation

Chaofei Hong, Ziyang Chen, Baochen Wang, Christina Yi Jin, Qing Zhang

Cross-modal translation requires models to capture shared semantics across modalities while preserving the fine-grained structure required by the target modality. Yet in real-world scientific domains, paired data are often imperfect, while obtaining clean pairs at scale is costly. Supervised fine-tuning (SFT) directly optimizes cross-modal translation through categorical token-level supervision, but this objective is sensitive to errors in the target sequences. JEPA offers a complementary representation-space objective, but most existing formulations focus on prediction within a modality rather than translation across modalities. We introduce Anchored Cross-Modal JEPA (AC-JEPA), an SFT-compatible plug-in that predicts masked intermediate states in both cross-modal directions using paired data. The joint-embedding objective targets cross-modal structure predictable from context, while the causal SFT path retains direct token-level supervision for the target sequence. During self-training, AC-JEPA learns from continuous latent targets derived from imperfect pseudo-labeled pairs, offering intrinsic tolerance to local data errors without promoting pseudo-tokens to hard categorical supervision. Using optical chemical structure recognition as a testbed, AC-JEPA trained on clean pairs achieves 76.07% accuracy on the Simple set of the WildMol benchmark, compared with 67.40% for SFT alone. Using the same pseudo-labeled data for both approaches, AC-JEPA-based self-training further raises accuracy to 80.23%, whereas accuracy under direct SFT drops from 67.40% to 63.47%. These results support SFT-anchored joint-embedding prediction as an effective strategy for cross-modal translation under both curated and imperfect supervision.

Revealing Imaging Characteristics of Thermal Wakes from Underwater Vehicles Without Cooling-Water Discharge

Guoyi Zhang, Yanjin Du, Guangsheng Xu, Zhengyao Zhao, Siyang Chen, Jingjing Gao, Yuezheng Zhou, Yiyang Wu 等 19 位作者

Small uncrewed underwater vehicles are proliferating and threaten maritime security, yet evade sonar and magnetic sensors built for larger submarines. Infrared thermal wakes, generated by hydrodynamic displacement that modulates the cold-skin layer, offer a non-acoustic, non-magnetic alternative even without cooling-water discharge. Existing studies, however, rely on idealized simulations that fail to capture real-world backgrounds, offering limited guidance for target-background discrimination. We establish AVP-IR-Wake, the first large-scale, real-world, physically diverse benchmark of 161,485 frames collected over three years. We show that thermal wakes are extended structures of discrete vortices, violating the compactness assumption of conventional targets. We reveal local indistinguishability: individual wake vortices are statistically identical to wind-induced background vortices in temporal, frequency, and sparse domains, sharing low-frequency information and long-range correlations. This challenges the assumptions of compact, transient, high-frequency targets in conventional detection. Yet we establish global morphological separability: although locally inseparable, the wake as a whole is organized by vehicle trajectory, whereas background clutter is organized by wind-driven thermal fronts. This explains why representative detectors fail and shows that reliable detection must shift from local feature extraction to global trajectory-constrained physical modeling. Because the cold-skin layer varies globally and seasonally, forecasting wake observability will require integrating physical oceanography and atmospheric science, linking underwater surveillance to the changing ocean surface.

Multiscale Policy Optimization for Long-Horizon LLM Agents

Tao Ren, Hui Yang, Jia Deng, Tingyang Chen, Qiyao Wang, Shuo Tang, Ziyang Zeng, Yuhua Jiang 等 19 位作者

Long-horizon LLM agents interact with their environments through complete assistant turns while generating each action token by token. We observe that critic values vary primarily across turns, motivating optimization anchored at turns with finer credit allocation among tokens. We propose Multiscale Policy Optimization (MPO), combining Multiscale Advantage Estimation (MAE) and turn-level importance sampling to align credit assignment and policy updates at the turn scale. Extensive experiments across search, tool-use, and automation tasks with 4B and 30B-A3B models demonstrate consistent gains over strong RL baselines.

Rethinking the Role of Entropy in Optimizing Tool-Use Behaviors for Large Language Model Agents

Zeping Li, Hongru Wang, Yiwen Zhao, Guanhua Chen Southern University of Science and Technology, Yixia Li, Keyang Chen Fudan University, Yixin Cao Fudan University, Guangnan Ye Fudan University 等 10 位作者

Tool-using agents based on Large Language Models (LLMs) excel in tasks such as mathematical reasoning and multi-hop question answering. However, in long trajectories, agents often trigger excessive and low-quality tool calls, increasing latency and degrading inference performance, making managing tool-use behavior challenging. In this work, we conduct entropy-based pilot experiments and observe a strong positive correlation between entropy reduction and high-quality tool calls. Building on this finding, we propose using entropy reduction as a supervisory signal and design two reward strategies to address the differing needs of optimizing tool-use behavior. Sparse outcome rewards provide coarse, trajectory-level guidance to improve efficiency, while dense process rewards offer fine-grained supervision to enhance performance. Experiments across diverse domains show that both reward designs improve tool-use behavior: the former reduces tool calls by 72.07% compared to the average of baselines, while the latter improves performance by 22.27%. These results position entropy reduction as a key mechanism for enhancing tool-use behavior, enabling agents to be more adaptive in real-world applications.

SCOPE: Boosting LLM Efficiency with Scoped Position Encoding

Qingguo Qi, Hongyang Chen Zhejiang Lab, China, Zhao Li Zhejiang Lab, Zhejiang Lab and Hangzhou Yugu Technology Co., Ltd.

Positional encodings are fundamental to Transformers, yet explicit methods like RoPE can degrade under length extrapolation and may incur extra arithmetic and memory-access overhead. In this paper, we propose Scoped Position Encoding (ScoPE), a novel framework that reimagines structured sparsity as an intrinsic position encoding mechanism. Instead of relying on explicit arithmetic signals, ScoPE assigns exponentially scaled look-back scopes to attention heads. We theoretically demonstrate that this simple topological constraint transforms multi-head attention into a hierarchical processor, yielding an order awareness horizon that grows exponentially with depth up to the sequence length. Consequently, ScoPE is parameter-free and avoids relying on fragile positional arithmetic. Empirically, it significantly enhances efficiency by masking the majority of attention computations, offering a theoretical 8x reduction in attention FLOPs at long contexts. Extensive evaluations on LLaMA-3-8B architectures reveal that ScoPE achieves superior native length extrapolation and robust retrieval fidelity compared to RoPE, all while substantially reducing training and inference latency. The code is available at https://github.com/oncemoe/ScoPE.

SAT: Balancing Reasoning Accuracy and Efficiency with Stepwise Adaptive Thinking

Weiyang Huang Harbin Institute of Technology ,(Shenzhen), Xuefeng Bai, Kehai Chen Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), Xinyang Chen Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen, Yibin Chen, Weili Guan, Min Zhang Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen and Harbin Institute of Technology

Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) have revolutionized complex problem-solving, yet they exhibit a pervasive “overthinking”, generating unnecessarily long reasoning chains. While current solutions improve token efficiency, they often sacrifice fine-grained control or risk disrupting the logical integrity of the reasoning process. To address this, we introduce Stepwise Adaptive Thinking (SAT), a framework that performs step-level, difficulty-aware pruning while preserving the core reasoning structure. SAT formulates reasoning as a Finite-State Machine (FSM) with distinct thinking modes (SLOW, NORMAL, FAST, SKIP). It navigates these states dynamically using a lightweight Process Reward Model (PRM), compressing easy steps while preserving depth for hard ones. Experiments across 9 LRMs and 7 benchmarks show that SAT achieves up to 40% reduction in reasoning tokens while generally maintaining or improving accuracy. Code is available at https://github.com/byxw13/SAT_Code.

ParaSuite: Boosting LLM Reasoning via Paradox Resolution

Bin Chen Zhejiang Lab, Zhejiang Lab, Yu Zhang, Hongfei Ye, Huiyang Wang, Wenxi Liu University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hongyang Chen Zhejiang Lab, China

Logical reasoning is a key capability of large language models, yet current benchmarks focus almost entirely on tasks that just check basic logical consistency and overlook the reflective reasoning required for paradox detection and resolution. To fill the gap, we present ParaSuite, the first pipeline dedicated to paradox research that automates data synthesis, evaluation, and training. We introduce PARADOX, a synthetic, high-quality data spanning two difficulty tiers and three academic domains, accompanied by specialized evaluation metrics and solving algorithms. We propose ParadoxBreaker-7B, trained with Mutual-Information Guided Fine-Tuning and reinforcement learning step verify paradox reward(PAPO). Experiments demonstrate significant improvements in both paradoxical and general STEM reasoning.

Constructing coherent spatial memory in LLM agents through graph rectification

Puzhen Zhang, Xuyang Chen, Yu Feng Hochschule Mainz - University of Applied Sciences, Yuhan Jiang, Liqiu Meng

Given a map description through global traversal navigation instructions, an LLM can often infer the implicit spatial layout and answer user queries by providing shortest paths. However, such context-dependent querying becomes incapable as environments grow larger, motivating the need for incremental map construction that builds a complete topological graph from stepwise observations. We propose a framework for LLM-driven construction and map repair, designed to detect, localize, and correct structural inconsistencies in incrementally constructed navigation graphs. Central to our method is the Version Control, which records the full history of graph edits and their source observations, enabling fine-grained rollback, conflict tracing, and repair evaluation. We further introduce an Edge Impact Score to prioritize minimal-cost repairs based on structural reachability, path usage, and conflict propagation. To properly evaluate our approach, we create a refined version of the MANGO benchmark dataset by systematically removing non-topological actions and inherent structural conflicts, providing a cleaner testbed for LLM-driven construction and map repair. Our approach significantly improves map correctness and robustness, especially in scenarios with entangled or chained inconsistencies. Our results highlight the importance of introspective, history-aware repair mechanisms for maintaining coherent spatial memory in LLM agents.

SpeechLLM-as-Judges: Towards General and Interpretable Speech Quality Evaluation

Hui Wang, Jinghua Zhao, Yifan Yang, Shujie Liu, Junyang Chen Nankai University, Yanzhe Zhang, Shiwan Zhao, Jinyu Li Microsoft 等 12 位作者

Generative speech technologies are progressing rapidly, but evaluating the perceptual quality of synthetic speech remains a core challenge. Existing methods typically rely on scalar scores or binary decisions, which lack interpretability and generalization across tasks and languages. We present SpeechLLM-as-Judges, a new paradigm for enabling large language models (LLMs) to conduct structured and explanation-based speech quality evaluation. To support this direction, we introduce SpeechEval, a large-scale dataset containing 32,207 multilingual speech clips and 128,754 annotations spanning four tasks: quality assessment, pairwise comparison, improvement suggestion, and deepfake detection. Based on this resource, we develop SQ-LLM, a speech-quality-aware LLM trained with chain-of-thought reasoning and reward optimization to improve capability. Experimental results show that SQ-LLM delivers strong performance across tasks and languages, revealing the potential of this paradigm for advancing speech quality evaluation. The relevant code, models, and data are publicly available at https://github.com/NKU-HLT/SpeechLLM-as-Judges.

ChessArena: A Chess Testbed for Evaluating Strategic Reasoning Capabilities of Large Language Models

Jincheng Liu, Sijun He Tencent, Jingjing Wu, Xiangsen Wang, Yang Chen, Zhaoqi Kuang, Siqi Bao, Yuan Yao

Recent large language models (LLMs) have shown strong reasoning capabilities. However, a critical question remains: do these models possess genuine strategic reasoning, or do they primarily excel at pattern recognition? To address this, we present ChessArena, a chess-based testbed for evaluating LLMs. Chess demands strategic reasoning, precise rule adherence, and the ability to track complex game states. ChessArena is a competitive framework where LLMs play against each other under four play modes. We evaluate 13 LLMs across over 800 games, testing basic understanding, move selection, and puzzle solving. Results reveal significant shortcomings: no model beats Maia-1100 (human amateur level), and some lose to random play. We also present a strong baseline: our fine-tuned Qwen3-8B substantially improves performance, approaching much larger state-of-the-art reasoning models.

CADMate: Generating CAD Assembly Plan with Geometric Chain-of-Thought and Spatial Physical Rewards

Jiali Chen, DingBa Fu, Xusen Hei, Yuhang Liu, Yiyang Chen, Jiayuan Xie, Wenqi Fan The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Yi Cai South China University of Technology

Computer-aided design (CAD) is crucial in prototyping complex 3D objects through precise geometric modeling. In practical design workflows, designers manually define assembly sequences for individual CAD parts, a process that is both time-consuming and expertise-intensive. To address this challenge, we formulate CAD assembly as a parametric action prediction task: given a reference design image and disassembled parts, the model predicts 6-DoF transformations (, actions) to progressively assemble each part. This paradigm enables multimodal large language models (MLLMs) to solve the task through autoregressive action generation. While recent MLLMs demonstrate promising spatial reasoning, they struggle with fine-grained geometric structure understanding and physical collision avoidance during assembly. In this paper, we propose CADMate, an MLLM-based framework for sequential CAD assembly action generation. Our training strategy comprises three stages: (i) CAD domain adaptation for spatial geometry and position understanding, (ii) supervised fine-tuning with geometric chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning for action generation, and (iii) reinforcement learning with spatial-physical rewards jointly optimize spatial accuracy and collision avoidance. Additionally, we also construct CADBuilder dataset, comprising over 45K CAD assemblies with annotated action sequences. Our experiments demonstrate that CADMate significantly outperforms existing prominent MLLMs (, GPT-5), showing great potential in design applications.

Geospatial data offers immense potential for understanding our planet. However, the sheer volume and diversity of this data along with its varied resolutions, timescales, and sparsity pose significant challenges for thorough analysis and interpretation. This paper introduces Earth AI, a family of geospatial AI models and agentic reasoning that enables significant advances in our ability to unlock novel and profound insights into our planet. This approach is built upon foundation models across three key domains--Planet-scale Imagery, Population, and Environment--and an intelligent Gemini-powered reasoning engine. We present rigorous benchmarks showcasing the power and novel capabilities of our foundation models and validate that when used together, they provide complementary value for geospatial inference and their synergies unlock superior predictive capabilities. To handle complex, multi-step queries, we developed a Gemini-powered agent that jointly reasons over our multiple foundation models along with large geospatial data sources and tools. On a new benchmark of real-world crisis scenarios, our agent demonstrates the ability to deliver critical and timely insights, effectively bridging the gap between raw geospatial data and actionable understanding.
