从一到多,从多到一:面向软件工程智能体的类别感知迭代专家训练

One to More, More to One: Category-Aware Iterative Expert Training for Software Engineering Agents

AI 速览:提出类别感知的专家训练与策略整合框架,用同类专家迭代强化学习加多教师蒸馏,缓解仓库级软件工程任务中不同类别进展不均的“跷跷板”现象。

Repository-level software engineering (SWE) comprises heterogeneous task categories, whose progress under pooled agentic reinforcement learning can be uneven: gains in some categories coincide with regressions in others, while aggregate resolution obscures these changes. Motivated by this category see-saw, we develop a category-aware expert-training and policy-integration framework. Executable task construction and SWE Labeler, an evidence-grounded multi-axis labeling system, organize the training pools. Initial category-specific RL improves average training success while leaving uneven instance-level progress, motivating explicit consolidation of successful behavior and policy-adaptive task selection. Same-origin category experts alternate long-horizon Agentic-miniRL with Refresh-Repair-Expand (RRE): the updated policy refreshes instance mastery, reuses its own verified successful trajectories for Repair SFT, and reselects tasks for further RL. Label-routed multi-teacher on-policy distillation (MOPD) consolidates the experts into one deployable student, with ReLU-gated reward extrapolation keeping only each teacher's improving direction over the reference. Expert training and policy integration require no external model to provide solution trajectories or action targets. On a fixed, audit-filtered Pro-618 subset, we connect Pooled RL and Balanced RL, expert development, and single-model integration through overall and per-category resolution and expert-gain recovery. In final-model evaluations, MOPD achieves mean resolution of 86.19% on SWE-bench Pro V2 and 71.78% on SWE-bench Multilingual, exceeding the base model by 4.57 and 3.89 percentage points, respectively. The same three 27B experts also improve a Qwen3.6-35B-A3B student across the evaluated task sets.

生成式多智能体系统中的涌现风险

Emergent Risks in Generative Multi-Agent Systems

AI 速览:该研究考察由大生成模型构成的多智能体系统在共享资源竞争、顺序交接与集体决策等场景中自发出现的群体性失败模式。

Multi-agent systems composed of large generative models are rapidly moving from laboratory prototypes to real-world deployments, where they jointly plan, negotiate, and allocate shared resources to solve complex tasks. While such systems promise unprecedented scalability and autonomy, their collective interaction also gives rise to failure modes that cannot be reduced to individual agents. Understanding these emergent risks is therefore critical. Here, we present a pioneer study of such emergent multi-agent risk in workflows that involve competition over shared resources (e.g., computing resources or market share), sequential handoff collaboration (where downstream agents see only predecessor outputs), collective decision aggregation, and others. Across these settings, we observe that such group behaviors arise frequently across repeated trials and a wide range of interaction conditions, rather than as rare or pathological cases. In particular, phenomena such as collusion-like coordination and conformity emerge with non-trivial frequency under realistic resource constraints, communication protocols, and role assignments, mirroring well-known pathologies in human societies despite no explicit instruction. Moreover, these risks cannot be prevented by existing agent-level safeguards alone. These findings expose the dark side of intelligent multi-agent systems: a social intelligence risk where agent collectives, despite no instruction to do so, spontaneously reproduce familiar failure patterns from human societies.

BRIDGE: Learning Brain-Gut Metabolic Evidence for Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis

Pengli Zhu, Ruxi Chang, Tianliang Yao, Yu Jiang, Shengyuan Liu, Yiyang Lin, Xiaoyi Duan, Shuang Wu 等 10 位作者

Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis may benefit from gut metabolic information associated with brain-gut interactions, yet existing models largely analyze cerebral glucose metabolism alone. Although whole-body fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) can provide paired brain-gut observations, routine brain examinations rarely include gut imaging, limiting direct use of this information for diagnosis. In this paper, we present BRIDGE (Brain and Gut Representation Integration via Distribution-Guided Enhancement), a two-stage framework for transferring brain-gut metabolic knowledge to brain-only diagnosis. Specifically, BRIDGE integrates a conditional brain-to-gut latent transport module and a disease-evidence-guided cerebral pathway to capture subject-specific cross-organ correspondence and disease-relevant cerebral representations. For the cerebral pathway, a large language model (LLM) helps organize literature-derived descriptors into human-approved semantic anchors that guide feature learning. Additionally, we introduce a counterfactual-guided residual fusion mechanism, which uses matched and non-matched virtual-gut evidence to supervise a confidence gate and dynamically regulate the contribution of transported cross-organ information. At inference, BRIDGE exploits complementary gut-related context using brain PET alone, without measured gut PET. Extensive experiments across public and private cohorts demonstrate that BRIDGE outperforms brain-only and cross-organ baselines, achieving AUC gains of 6.0% and 5.2% over its brain-only counterpart for CN/MCI and CN/AD diagnosis, respectively. Notably, its ability to transfer complementary brain-gut metabolic context while preserving brain PET as the sole inference input highlights its potential for clinically practical diagnosis. Our code is available at https://github.com/CUHK-AIM-Group/BRIDGE.

TRIDENT-Seq: Profile-Matched Prefix-Future Contrast for Label-Efficient Payment Risk Modeling

Weiyu Han, Haoyu Jiang, Jie Sheng, Ruobing Zuo, Huilin He, Ze Zhao, Xiao Tan, Nairong Zhang 等 10 位作者

Ant International accumulates large volumes of transaction history across users and payment businesses. Confirmed fraud and chargeback outcomes, by contrast, are scarce, delayed, and specific to each business. A single encoder pretrained on unlabeled histories could serve all businesses, but only if pretraining captures the behavior that separates risk. Coarse activity differences can make contrastive pretraining on transaction logs too easy: transaction volume, amount, and timing can distinguish a history's continuation from arbitrary candidates without modeling how payment resources are used. We present TRIDENT-Seq, a transaction foundation model trained with Prefix-Future Contrast (PFC). PFC matches each prefix to a summary of its subsequent behavior among candidates with similar activity profiles; activity prediction and dispersion regularization act on the encoder output. Across three production payment businesses, the pretrained encoder improves average precision (AP) and recall at a 0.5% intervention budget over architecture-matched scratch training in all six business-budget settings. With a fixed validation set, it exceeds full-label scratch training in mean AP and recall using 10% of the training labels on Wallet and 25% on Shopping and SME. Pretraining only on another business's histories still helps. Replacing profile-matched candidates with random ones cuts recall from 24.62% to 5.64%. In Ant International's deployment evaluation, recorded amount-based chargeback and overall loss rates are 37.7% and 37.9% lower than those of the previous XGBoost-based system under the same intervention budget.

VibeVideoBench: Evaluating Multimodal Agents on Code-Driven Video Generation

Muxi Diao, Wenbin Xu, Lele Yang, Xuyang Ma, Yuzhe Chen, Jiankang Chen, Kaiyu Jiang, Changyi Liu 等 24 位作者

Diffusion video models produce striking clips, but they cannot reliably render an exact formula, a correct chart, a rule-consistent game or narration synchronized to on-screen events. A different route is emerging: multimodal agents that write code to render every frame and synthesize every sound. We introduce VibeVideoBench, a benchmark for evaluating agents on code-driven video generation. Its 239 self-contained tasks in English and Chinese span 12 categories, from data stories and music-driven pieces to classroom lessons and paper explainers; each asks an agent, running in its native harness inside a sandbox with no image or video generation model, to deliver a finished MP4 with sound within one hour. Evaluation is hierarchical and evidence-based: program checks of the delivery spec, about 13k task-specific rubric checks traced to the requirements they enforce, and five quality dimensions anchored per task, scored by three VLM judge panels. Across nine frontier agent systems and 2,151 scored rollouts, GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5.5 rank first and second with both the judges and human annotators, and the strongest system satisfies every core requirement on 76.3% of tasks. Delivery is a second axis: counting missing videos as zero changes the ranking, and three quarters of the lost videos are final renders that started too late, ran too slowly or never started, a failure of how agents plan their hour. Agents build their own rendering pipelines and inspect their own frames, yet how much they look does not predict quality. The judges' ranking of the systems closely matches blind human preferences.

基于选择的结构化推理:迈向高效多模态搜索智能体

Selection-Based Structured Reasoning: Toward Efficient Multimodal Search Agents

AI 速览:将多模态智能体的开放式推理改为从预设自然语言候选集中选择,以提升推理效率并保持任务表现。

Multimodal agents commonly generate free-form reasoning before each action. For small models, limited model capacity can result in lengthy reasoning that provides little useful guidance for action generation while incurring substantial inference cost. To address this challenge, we introduce Selection-based Structured Reasoning (SSR), a framework that reformulates reasoning as selection instead of open-ended generation. SSR represents recurring high-level reasoning as pre-specified, reusable natural-language candidates. At each turn, the model selects from these reasoning candidates based on their likelihoods given the current context, without requiring an auxiliary task head. Using pre-specified reasoning traces enables parallel scoring, where teacher-forced prefilling computes token likelihoods concurrently within and across candidates using a shared context KV cache. We evaluate SSR on seven multimodal search benchmarks using 2B and 4B models. Across multiple reinforcement learning objectives and supervised fine-tuning, SSR delivers significant efficiency gains without sacrificing task performance. SSR achieves an average success rate competitive with leading search agents of the same scale, while reducing per-turn reasoning latency by over 90% and total per-question model inference latency by 28-54%. RiskLab: A Controlled Toolkit for Probing Emergent Risks in LLM-Based Multi-Agent Systems

Yu Jiang, Wenjie Wang, Yue Huang University of Notre Dame, Yanbo Wang Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Zhenhong Zhou, Xiuying Chen Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Yang Liu Nanyang Technological University, Pin-Yu Chen International Business Machines 等 10 位作者

Large language model (LLM) agents increasingly operate in multi-agent settings where failures emerge from interaction dynamics rather than isolated model errors. We introduce RiskLab, an open-source toolkit for instantiating, probing, and measuring emergent risks in LLM-based multi-agent systems under controlled conditions. Each experiment is defined as a structured topology–environment–protocol–agent–task quintuple, enabling reproducible studies of how communication structure, coordination mechanisms, and incentives shape system-level risks. RiskLab provides flexible communication topologies, swappable interaction protocols, trajectory-grounded evaluation, and extensible registries for risk detectors and agent backends. We demonstrate the toolkit across representative risks, including collusion, resource overreach, semantic drift, and strategic misreporting, and support one-file reproducibility via configuration.

IceBreaker for Conversational Agents: Breaking the First-Message Barrier with Personalized Starters

Hongwei Zheng, Weiqi Wu, Zhengjia Wang, Guanyu Jiang, Haoming Li, Tianyu Wu, Yongchun Zhu, Jingwu Chen 等 9 位作者

Conversational agents, such as ChatGPT and Doubao, have become essential daily assistants for billions of users. To further enhance engagement, these systems are evolving from passive responders to proactive companions. However, existing efforts focus on activation within ongoing dialogues, while overlooking a key real-world bottleneck. In the conversation initiation stage, users may have a vague need but no explicit query intent, creating a first-message barrier where the conversation holds before it begins. To overcome this, we introduce Conversation Starter Generation: generating personalized starters to guide users into conversation. However, unlike in-conversation stages where immediate context guides the response, initiation must operate in a cold-start moment without explicit user intent. To pioneer in this direction, we present IceBreaker that frames human ice-breaking as a two-step handshake: (i) evoke resonance via Resonance-Aware Interest Distillation from session summaries to capture trigger interests, and (ii) stimulate interaction via Interaction-Oriented Starter Generation, optimized with personalized preference alignment and a self-reinforced loop to maximize engagement. Online A/B tests on one of the world’s largest conversational agent products show that IceBreaker improves user active days by +1.84‰ and click-through rate by +94.25‰, and has been deployed in production.

Latent Attention Denoising: A Training-Free Energy-Based Framework for Mitigating Hallucinations in Vision-Language Models

Zhiwen Luo, Siyu Jiang, Weilong Jiang Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Kun He Huazhong University of Sceince and Technology

Visual hallucination remains a major obstacle to the reliability of Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs). We argue that this issue originates from a fundamental statistical misspecification: the conventional softmax attention implicitly assumes i.i.d. noise, yet real LVLM attention patterns exhibit structured and competitive biases (e.g., attention sinks) that violate this assumption. To address this mismatch, we introduce Latent Attention Denoising (LAD), a principled and training-free framework that recasts attention calibration as a one-step score-based denoising process. LAD employs an interpretable energy function to derive an analytic score and applies a single Langevin-inspired update to actively steer corrupted attention logits toward more faithful configurations. This intervention imposes negligible computational overhead and operates at a speed comparable to standard greedy decoding. Extensive evaluations across diverse architectures confirm that LAD achieves superior performance on both generative and discriminative tasks, effectively mitigating hallucinations while maintaining efficiency comparable to standard decoding.

Evaluating the Expressive Appropriateness of Speech in Rich Contexts

Tianrui Wang, Ziyang Ma, Yizhou Peng Nanyang Technological University, Haoyu Wang, Zhikang Niu, Zikang Huang, Yihao Wu, Yi-Wen Chao Nanyang Technological University 等 29 位作者

Evaluating expressive speech remains challenging, as existing methods mainly assess emotional intensity and overlook whether a speech sample is expressively appropriate for its contextual setting. This limitation hinders reliable evaluation of speech systems used in narrative-driven and interactive applications, such as audiobooks and conversational agents. We introduce CEAEval, a Context-rich framework for Evaluating Expressive Appropriateness in speech, which assesses whether a speech sample expressively aligns with the underlying communicative intent implied by its discourse-level narrative context. To support this task, we construct CEAEval-D, the first context-rich speech dataset with real human performances in Mandarin conversational speech, providing narrative descriptions together with fifteen dimensions of human annotations covering expressive attributes and expressive appropriateness. We further develop CEAEval-M, a model that integrates knowledge distillation, planner-based multi-model collaboration, adaptive audio attention bias, and reinforcement learning to perform context-rich expressive appropriateness evaluation. Experiments on a human-annotated test set demonstrate that CEAEval-M substantially outperforms existing speech evaluation and analysis systems.

Rhetorical Questions in LLM Representations: A Linear Probing Study

Louie Hong Yao Independent, Vishesh Anand, Yuan Zhuang Amazon, Tianyu Jiang University of Cincinnati

Rhetorical questions are asked not to seek information but to persuade or signal stance. How large language models internally represent them remains unclear. We analyze rhetorical questions in LLM representations using linear probes on two social-media datasets with different discourse contexts, and find that rhetorical signals emerge early and are most stably captured by last-token representations. Rhetorical questions are linearly separable from information-seeking questions within datasets, and remain detectable under cross-dataset transfer, reaching AUROC around 0.7-0.8. However, we demonstrate that transferability does not simply imply a shared representation. Probes trained on different datasets produce different rankings when applied to the same target corpus, with overlap among the top-ranked instances often below 0.2. Qualitative analysis shows that these divergences correspond to distinct rhetorical phenomena: some probes capture discourse-level rhetorical stance embedded in extended argumentation, while others emphasize localized, syntax-driven interrogative acts. Together, these findings suggest that rhetorical questions in LLM representations are encoded by multiple linear directions emphasizing different cues, rather than a single shared direction.

Evaluating the Impact of Verbal Multiword Expressions on Machine Translation

Linfeng Liu University of Cincinnati, Saptarshi Ghosh, Tianyu Jiang University of Cincinnati

Verbal multiword expressions (VMWEs) remain difficult for machine translation because their meanings are often not recoverable from their component words. In this study, we analyze the impact of three VMWE categories—verbal idioms, verb-particle constructions, and light verb constructions—on machine translation quality from English to multiple languages. Using both established multiword expression datasets and standard machine translation datasets, we evaluate how state-of-the-art translation systems handle these expressions. Our experimental results consistently show that VMWEs negatively affect translation quality, with deeper analysis indicating that this degradation is primarily attributable to the VMWE itself rather than general sentence-level difficulty. We release our code and evaluation framework to test new MT systems for the community.

MetFuse: Figurative Fusion between Metonymy and Metaphor

Saptarshi Ghosh, Tianyu Jiang University of Cincinnati

Metonymy and metaphor often co-occur in natural language, yet computational work has studied them largely in isolation. We introduce a framework that transforms a literal sentence into three figurative variants: metonymic, metaphoric, and hybrid. Using this framework, we construct MetFuse, the first dedicated dataset of figurative fusion between metonymy and metaphor, containing 1,000 human-verified meaning-aligned quadruplets totaling 4,000 sentences. Extrinsic experiments on eight existing benchmarks show that augmenting training data with MetFuse consistently improves both metonymy and metaphor classification, with hybrid examples yielding the largest gains on metonymy tasks. Using this dataset, we also analyze how the presence of one figurative type impacts another. Our findings show that both human annotators and large language models better identify metonymy in hybrid sentences than in metonymy-only sentences, demonstrating that the presence of a metaphor makes a metonymic noun more explicit.

Exploring Concreteness Through a Figurative Lens

Saptarshi Ghosh, Tianyu Jiang University of Cincinnati

Static concreteness ratings are widely used in NLP, yet a word’s concreteness can shift with context, especially in figurative language such as metaphor, where common concrete nouns can take abstract interpretations. While such shifts are evident from context, it remains unclear how LLMs understand concreteness internally. We conduct a layer-wise and geometric analysis of LLM hidden representations across four model families, examining how models distinguish literal vs. figurative uses of the same noun and how concreteness is organized in representation space. We find that LLMs separate literal and figurative usage in early layers, and that mid-to-late layers compress concreteness into a one-dimensional direction that is consistent across models. Finally, we show this geometric structure is practically useful: a single concreteness direction supports efficient figurative-language classification and enables training-free steering of generation toward more literal or more figurative rewrites.
