Video captioning aims to preserve visual information through compact descriptions, predominantly using natural language. However, precisely expressing fine-grained spatial structures and temporal dynamics in natural language often leads to lengthy and potentially ambiguous descriptions. In this work, we explore Code as Video Caption, a paradigm where executable programs serve as a complementary representation of visual content through graphical primitives, layout rules, and functions of time. To examine whether code captions effectively preserve video information, we compare them with natural language captions on downstream question answering and video reconstruction tasks. Our results show that code captions achieve superior reasoning accuracy and reconstruction fidelity. Despite these advantages, realizing the potential of code captioning depends on whether current multimodal large language models (MLLMs) can generate faithful code captions. To systematically assess this capability, we introduce CodeCap-Bench, which comprises 323 videos spanning five categories of structured 2D content, along with fine-grained annotations and a multi-level evaluation framework. Extensive experiments reveal that while leading proprietary MLLMs demonstrate promising code captioning capabilities, they still struggle to faithfully capture complex temporal dynamics, with open-source models lagging substantially behind.

Structured information extraction from long, multilingual scanned financial documents is a core requirement in industrial KYC and compliance workflows. These documents are typically non-machine-readable, noisy, and visually heterogeneous. They usually span dozens of pages while containing only sparse task-relevant information. Although recent vision–language models (VLMs) achieve strong benchmark performance, directly applying them end-to-end to full financial reports often leads to unreliable extraction under real-world conditions. We present a multistage extraction framework that integrates image preprocessing, multilingual OCR, hybrid page-level retrieval, and compact VLM-based structured extraction. The design separates page localization from multimodal reasoning, enabling more accurate extraction from complex multi-page documents. We evaluated the framework on 120 production KYC documents comprising about 3000 multilingual scanned pages. Across multiple OCR–VLM combinations, the proposed pipeline consistently outperforms direct PDF-to-VLM baselines, improving field-level accuracy by up to 31.9 percentage points. The best configuration, PaddleOCR with MiniCPM-o-2.6, achieves 87.27% accuracy. Ablation studies show that page-level retrieval is the dominant factor in performance improvements, particularly for complex financial statements and non-English documents.

While Large Language Models (LLMs) excel at algorithmic code generation, they struggle with front-end development, where correctness is judged on rendered pixels and interaction. We present ReLook, an agentic, vision-grounded reinforcement learning framework that empowers an agent to close a robust generate–diagnose–refine loop by invoking a multimodal LLM (MLLM) as a tool. During training, the agent employs an MLLM-in-the-loop to serve as a visual critic, evaluating code via screenshots and providing actionable feedback. Crucially, we enforce a strict zero-reward policy for invalid renders to guarantee renderability and mitigate reward hacking. To prevent behavioral collapse, we introduce Forced Optimization, a strict acceptance rule that admits only improving revisions, yielding monotonically better trajectories. At inference, we decouple the critic and run a lightweight, critic-free self-edit cycle, keeping latency comparable to base decoding while retaining most of the gains. Across three widely used benchmarks, ReLook consistently outperforms strong baselines in vision-grounded front-end code generation, highlighting the benefits of agentic perception, visual rewards, and training–inference decoupling.
