Multimodal web agents have shown promising capabilities for interacting with websites through graphical user interfaces (GUIs), yet realistic web tasks often require long-horizon, multi-step planning that remains challenging for monolithic policies. Such agents must jointly infer high-level plans, navigate through intermediate states, track progress over extended interaction histories, and execute visually grounded actions. Although prior work has explored modular multi-agent systems with a separate planner, the planner is typically not updated jointly with the actor. We investigate whether explicitly separating and jointly training planning and execution provides a stronger inductive bias for long-horizon web navigation. We introduce JHiMA-WebRL, a joint hierarchical multi-agent reinforcement learning framework for web agents that couples a task decomposer with an actor. To train the decomposer, we use a strong teacher model to construct structured subtask supervision from multimodal GUI trajectories, and use these annotations to fine-tune both the decomposer and the subtask-conditioned actor. We then extend Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) to jointly optimize the decomposer and actor in the interactive WebArena environment through hierarchical rollout grouping and role-specific advantages. On WebArena-Lite-v2, JHiMA-WebRL-14B, consisting of a 7B actor and a 7B decomposer, achieves an average success rate of 37.2%, compared with 24% for a ScaleCUA-32B agent that we fine-tune with RL on the same training tasks and evaluate under the same protocol. Ablations show that jointly updating the decomposer during RL outperforms updating the actor alone. These results suggest that jointly learned role factorization with smaller models can be a competitive alternative to scaling monolithic agents for long-horizon web tasks.

Mobius Injection: From One-Shot Prompt Injection to Sustained Resource Exhaustion in AI Agent Infrastructure

Zi Liang, Ronghua Li, Yanyun Wang, Qingqing Ye, Haibo Hu

原文摘要

Large Language Model (LLM) agents have emerged as key intermediaries, orchestrating complex interactions between human users and a wide range of digital services and LLM infrastructures. While prior research has extensively examined the security of LLMs and agents in isolation, the systemic risk of the agent acting as a disruptive "hub" within the user-agent-service chain remains largely overlooked. In this work, we expose a novel threat paradigm by introducing Mobius Injection, a sophisticated attack that weaponizes autonomous agents into zombie nodes to launch what we define as Agent-based and -Oriented DDoS (AbO-DDoS) attacks. Mobius Injection composes known indirect prompt injection and persistent agent components through a distinct structural mechanism named Semantic Closure, which induces sustained recursive execution of agent components through a single injection event. We demonstrate that this attack is lightweight for the adversary, can evade traditional volumetric DDoS monitors and input filters calibrated for low false-positive rates, and is highly configurable, allowing for surgical targeting of specific environments or model providers. To evaluate the real-world impact, we conduct extensive experiments across three representative claw-style agents and three mainstream coding agents, integrated with 12 frontier proprietary or open-weight LLMs. Our results demonstrate that Mobius Injection achieves substantial attack success across diverse tasks, driving single-node call amplification up to 51.0x. Under coordinated multi-node pressure, each infected node still drains about 123k--127k tokens on a shared five-GPU backend; benign request latency rises by abou 23x--24x, and coordinated infections eventually saturate shared capacity until benign traffic is effectively denied service.

Humans' ALMANAC: A Human Collaboration Dataset of Action-Level Mental Model Annotations for Agent Collaboration

原文摘要

Recent advances in LLM agents have enabled complex cognitive capabilities, such as multi-step reasoning, planning, and tool use, that increasingly position these agents as collaborative partners in human workflows. Effective collaboration, however, requires collaborators to continuously maintain and align mental models of their own reasoning, partners' intentions, and shared goals during the collaborative process. Today's agents rarely develop such capabilities since they are primarily optimized for task completion rather than for maintaining the underlying mental models required for collaborative processes. Moreover, the community lacks authentic human collaboration data with action-level mental model annotations that could guide agents toward collaborative competence. To bridge this gap, we present ALMANAC, a dataset of Action-Level Mental model ANnotations for Agent Collaboration built from the Map Task, a classic dyadic routing task from social science. ALMANAC contains 2,987 collaboration actions, each paired with theory-informed mental model annotations that record the participants' self-reasoning, perceived partner intent, and perceived team goal. We benchmark six LLMs on predicting humans' next-turn behavior and mental models. Our results demonstrate ALMANAC's utility in evaluating models' ability to simulate human collaborative behaviors and infer their underlying mental models. EmpDPO: Enabling Emphasis Control in TTS via Direct Preference Optimization

Haonan Chen, Yunyun Wang, Megan Wei, Zeyu Jin

原文摘要

Word-level emphasis conveys meaning that text alone cannot express and is therefore essential for a practical text-to-speech (TTS) system. In this work, we study how to add emphasis control post hoc to a pretrained TTS model that has never been trained with emphasis annotations. We present EmpDPO, a simple, efficient, and effective two-stage recipe that adds emphasis control to a multilingual zero-shot diffusion TTS model through supervised fine-tuning followed by direct preference optimization (DPO). The training signals for both stages come from an off-the-shelf multilingual emphasis detector, so that no manual emphasis annotation or task-specific reward design is needed. We find that DPO can substantially strengthen emphasis control with only a few thousand preference pairs and training steps. Objective and subjective evaluations against strong public systems show that our model produces perceptible emphasis while preserving naturalness and overall quality.

Anagent For Enhancing Scientific Table & Figure Analysis

Xuehang Guo, Zhiyong Lu, Tom Hope, Qingyun Wang

原文摘要

In scientific research, analysis requires accurately interpreting complex multimodal knowledge, integrating evidence from different sources, and drawing inferences grounded in domain-specific knowledge. However, current artificial intelligence (AI) systems struggle to consistently demonstrate such capabilities. The complexity and variability of scientific tables and figures, combined with heterogeneous structures and long-context requirements, pose fundamental obstacles to scientific table \& figure analysis. To quantify these challenges, we introduce AnaBench, a large-scale benchmark featuring $63,178$ instances from nine scientific domains, systematically categorized along seven complexity dimensions. To tackle these challenges, we propose Anagent, a multi-agent framework for enhanced scientific table \& figure analysis through four specialized agents: Planner decomposes tasks into actionable subtasks, Expert retrieves task-specific information through targeted tool execution, Solver synthesizes information to generate coherent analysis, and Critic performs iterative refinement through five-dimensional quality assessment. We further develop modular training strategies that leverage supervised finetuning and specialized reinforcement learning to optimize individual capabilities while maintaining effective collaboration. Comprehensive evaluation across 170 subdomains demonstrates that Anagent achieves substantial improvements, up to $\uparrow 13.43\%$ in training-free settings and $\uparrow 42.12\%$ with finetuning, while revealing that task-oriented reasoning and context-aware problem-solving are essential for high-quality scientific table \& figure analysis. MatAnyone-E: Sparse Memory Propagation for Efficient High-Resolution Video Matting

Shuyun Wang, Shangchen Zhou, Peiqing Yang, Yuekun Dai, Xin Yu, Chen Change Loy

原文摘要

High-resolution video matting requires preserving fine details, such as hair strands and soft transparency, while maintaining consistency across frames. Memory-based methods achieve strong matting quality by matching current-frame features with information stored from earlier frames, but this process becomes increasingly costly as resolution grows. We present MatAnyone-E, an efficient extension of MatAnyone 2 that focuses computation where it is most needed. Our approach first performs low-resolution propagation to identify uncertain regions that require closer inspection and the memory candidates most relevant to them. It then performs high-resolution matching only for these regions using the selected memory, while reusing low-resolution matching results elsewhere. This strategy reduces both the number of locations requiring detailed matching and the amount of memory searched, while preserving the information needed to produce a complete matte. We further reduce the cost of generating high-resolution mattes with a lightweight decoder designed around measured runtime bottlenecks and trained to reproduce the original decoder's representations. Experiments show that MatAnyone-E maintains matting quality comparable to MatAnyone 2 while achieving an estimated 7.4x inference speedup and reducing peak GPU memory usage to 7.6% of the usage of MatAnyone 2 at 4K. With compilation-enabled inference on a single NVIDIA H200 GPU, it reaches 73.07 FPS at 1080p and 28.62 FPS at 4K.

Enhancing Software Engineering Through Closed-Loop Memory Optimization

Xuehang Guo, Xingyao Wang, Zora Zhiruo Wang, Qingyun Wang, Graham Neubig, Heng Ji

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) have enabled powerful software engineering (SE) agents capable of navigating complex codebases and resolving real-world issues. However, these agents remain fundamentally episodic: they fail to retain, refine, and reuse experiences across tasks, repeatedly reconstructing context from scratch and reproducing similar mistakes. Even with memory support, they offer no remedy for the absence of a principled, task-agnostic \textit{memory utility}, making them difficult to evaluate rigorously or generalize across agents and settings. To tackle these limitations, we introduce MemOp, a closed-loop framework for memory augmentation in SE agents. MemOp grounds memory utility in \textit{validated downstream impact}, establishing utility as both a task-agnostic \textbf{evaluation benchmark} and an annotation-free \textbf{optimization signal}. Evaluating MemOp across four benchmarks, three programming languages, and two SE agents, under complementary \textit{single-episode} and \textit{cross-episode} memory augmentation, results demonstrate the \textbf{effectiveness} of MemOp, achieving absolute gains of up to $\uparrow5.25\%$ in success rate and $\uparrow4.63\%$ in resolve efficiency, while notably reducing deployment cost by $\geq10.33\%$. MemOp further exhibits \textbf{generalizability} across SE agents, memory backbones, and optimization algorithms, together with \textbf{transferability} of MemOp-trained memory model to unseen programming languages and SE activities. Interpretable Safety Alignment via SAE-Constructed Low-Rank Subspace Adaptation

Dianyun Wang, Qingsen Ma, Yuhu Shang, Zhifeng Lu, Zhenbo Xu, Lechen Ning, Huijia Wu Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Zhaofeng He Beijing University of Post and Telecommunication

原文摘要

Safety alignment—training large language models (LLMs) to refuse harmful requests while remaining helpful—is critical for responsible deployment. Prior work established that safety behaviors are governed by low-rank structures, suggesting parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) should be well-suited for alignment. However, Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) consistently underperforms full fine-tuning and reinforcement learning on safety benchmarks. We attribute this gap to semantic entanglement: safety-relevant directions are intertwined with unrelated concepts due to polysemanticity, impeding implicit subspace identification. To address this, we propose SAILS (Safety Alignment via Interpretable Low-rank Subspace), which leverages Sparse Autoencoders (SAEs) to disentangle representations into monosemantic features, constructs an interpretable safety subspace from SAE decoder directions, and uses it to initialize LoRA adapters. Theoretically, we prove that SAE-based identification achieves arbitrarily small recovery error under monosemanticity assumptions, while direct identification suffers an irreducible error floor. Empirically, SAILS achieves up to 99.6% safety rates across multiple model families and scales, exceeding full fine-tuning and matching RLHF-based models, with only 0.2% of parameters updated and providing interpretability.

CiteGuard: Faithful Citation Attribution for LLMs via Retrieval-Augmented Validation

Yee Man Choi University of Waterloo, Xuehang Guo, Yi R. Fung, Qingyun Wang College of William and Mary

原文摘要

Large Language Models (LLMs) have emerged as powerful assistants for scientific writing. However, concerns remain about the quality and reliability of the generated text, including citation accuracy and faithfulness. While most recent work relies on methods such as LLM-as-a-Judge, the reliability of LLM-as-a-Judge alone is also in doubt. In this work, we reframe citation evaluation as a problem of citation attribution alignment, which assesses whether LLM-generated citations match those a human author would include for the same text. We propose CiteGuard, a retrieval-aware agent framework designed to provide more faithful grounding for citation validation. CiteGuard improves over the prior baseline by 10 percentage points and achieves up to 68.1% accuracy on the CiteME benchmark, approaching human performance (69.2%). It also identifies alternative valid citations and demonstrates generalization ability for cross-domain citation attribution.

LLMs for Now, Fine-Tuning for Later: An Ensemble Approach to Data Drift in Domain-Specific Tasks

原文摘要

Deploying machine learning models in real-world domain-specific scenarios is challenged by the scarcity of expert annotations and by data drift, where the statistical properties of incoming data continuously evolve. Active Learning (AL) iteratively improves compact models with expert annotations but suffers from recurring cold-start degradation, while LLMs provide strong off-the-shelf performance yet cannot leverage newly accumulated labels, raising the question: how can we better leverage LLMs to assist the active learning process? Through an empirical study on five legal and biomedical datasets, we reveal a complementary temporal dynamic: LLMs excel during early and post-drift stages, while AL-assisted compact models eventually surpass them as annotations accumulate. Motivated by this finding, we propose an ensemble system that combines an LLM, an AL-assisted compact model, and an automatic switch module that routes predictions to the better-performing model in real time. Evaluated under simulated data drift on two mental health datasets, our system achieves 96–98% switch accuracy and consistently outperforms either model used alone.

AI4VIS: Survey on Artificial Intelligence Approaches for Data Visualization

Aoyu Wu, Yun Wang, Xinhuan Shu, Dominik Moritz, Weiwei Cui, Haidong Zhang, Dongmei Zhang, Huamin Qu

原文摘要

Visualizations themselves have become a data format. Akin to other data formats such as text and images, visualizations are increasingly created, stored, shared, and (re-)used with artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. In this survey, we probe the underlying vision of formalizing visualizations as an emerging data format and review the recent advance in applying AI techniques to visualization data (AI4VIS). We define visualization data as the digital representations of visualizations in computers and focus on data visualization (e.g., charts and infographics). We build our survey upon a corpus spanning ten different fields in computer science with an eye toward identifying important common interests. Our resulting taxonomy is organized around WHAT is visualization data and its representation, WHY and HOW to apply AI to visualization data. We highlight a set of common tasks that researchers apply to the visualization data and present a detailed discussion of AI approaches developed to accomplish those tasks. Drawing upon our literature review, we discuss several important research questions surrounding the management and exploitation of visualization data, as well as the role of AI in support of those processes. We make the list of surveyed papers and related material available online at ai4vis.github.io.
