Sharp Bounds for Truthful-in-Expectation Scheduling

Yunpeng Li

We study randomized mechanisms for scheduling indivisible jobs on $n$ unrelated machines. Each machine is controlled by a selfish agent who privately knows its processing time for each job. A mechanism assigns every job to a machine and makes payments. We require truthfulness in expectation: no agent can increase its expected payment minus its expected processing cost by misreporting, regardless of the other agents' reports. The makespan is the maximum total processing time assigned to a machine; the objective is to minimize its expectation. We prove that the optimal approximation ratio is $(n+1)/2$ for every $n\ge7$, relative to the minimum makespan of an integral assignment. The lower bound holds for every $n$ and allows unrestricted computation and arbitrary correlations among assignments, assuming finite expected payments and a guarantee uniform over all finite job counts. The matching mechanism uses correlated rounding and runs in expected polynomial bit time on rational inputs. These guarantees hold for all finite nonnegative processing times. For two machines, we characterize the optimal approximation ratio exactly as an analytic constant, approximately $1.505995705434$, and give a mechanism attaining it. For three machines the optimal ratio is $2$. For four, five, and six machines we obtain upper bounds of $3$, $105/32$, and $29/8$, respectively, compared with the general lower bound $(n+1)/2$. The proofs for $n\ge7$ do not rely on computer-assisted certificates; the two- and three-machine results use exact rational computer-assisted certificates.

Rethinking Infrared Small Target Detection: A Foundation-Driven Efficient Paradigm

Chuang Yu, Jinmiao Zhao, Yunpeng Liu, Yaokun Li, Xiujun Shu, Yuanhao Feng, Bo Wang, Xiangyu Yue

While large-scale visual foundation models (VFMs) exhibit strong generalization across diverse visual domains, their potential for single-frame infrared small target (SIRST) detection remains largely unexplored. To fill this gap, we first systematically introduce frozen VFM representations into the SIRST task and propose a Foundation-Driven Efficient Paradigm (FDEP), a general and efficient framework compatible with diverse VFMs and SIRST networks, which improves detection accuracy without additional VFM-related inference overhead. Specifically, a Semantic Alignment and Modulated Fusion (SAMF) module is designed to achieve dynamic alignment and deep fusion of the global semantic priors from VFMs with task-specific features. Meanwhile, to avoid the inference-time overhead introduced by VFMs, we propose a Collaborative Optimization-based Implicit Self-Distillation (CO-ISD) strategy, which enables implicit semantic transfer between the main and lightweight branches through parameter sharing and synchronized backpropagation. In addition, to unify the fragmented evaluation system, we construct a Holistic SIRST Evaluation (HSE) metric that performs multi-threshold integral evaluation at both pixel-level confidence and target-level robustness, providing a stable and comprehensive basis for fair model comparison. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the SIRST detection networks equipped with our FDEP framework achieve state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on multiple public datasets. Why and How: Knowledge-Guided Learning for Cross-Spectral Image Patch Matching

Chuang Yu, Yunpeng Liu, Jinmiao Zhao, Ao Chen, Xiujun Shu, Bo Wang, Zelin Shi, Xiangyu Yue

Recently, cross-spectral image patch matching based on feature relation learning has attracted extensive attention. However, existing methods focus on mining richer feature relations by building complex relation extraction structures. Meanwhile, performance bottlenecks have gradually emerged. To address this, we make the first attempt to explore a stable and efficient bridge between descriptor learning and metric learning, and construct a Knowledge-Guided Learning Network (KGL-Net), which achieves significant performance improvements while abandoning complex network structures. Specifically, we find that there is feature extraction consistency between metric learning based on feature difference learning and descriptor learning based on Euclidean distance. This provides the foundation for bridge building. To ensure the stability and efficiency of the constructed bridge, on the one hand, we conduct an in-depth exploration of 20 combined network architectures. On the other hand, a feature-guided loss is constructed to achieve mutual guidance of features. In addition, unlike existing methods, we consider that the feature mapping ability of the metric branch should receive more attention. Therefore, a hard negative sample mining for metric learning (HNSM-M) strategy is constructed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that hard negative sample mining for metric networks has been implemented and brings significant performance gains. Extensive experimental results show that our KGL-Net achieves SOTA performance in multiple cross-spectral image patch matching datasets. Our code is available at https://github.com/YuChuang1205/KGL-Net

Relational Representation Learning Network for Cross-Spectral Image Patch Matching

Chuang Yu, Yunpeng Liu, Jinmiao Zhao, Dou Quan, Zelin Shi, Xiangyu Yue

Recently, feature relation learning has drawn widespread attention in cross-spectral image patch matching. However, existing related research focuses on capturing diverse feature relations between image patches and ignores sufficient intrinsic feature representations of individual image patches. To address this limitation, we propose an innovative relational representation learning that simultaneously focuses on sufficiently mining the intrinsic features of individual image patches and the feature relations between image patches. Based on this, we construct a Relational Representation Learning Network (RRL-Net). Specifically, we innovatively construct an autoencoder to effectively characterize the individual intrinsic features, and introduce a feature interaction learning (FIL) module to extract deep-level feature relations. Meanwhile, to further fully mine individual intrinsic features, a lightweight multi-dimensional global-to-local attention (MGLA) module is constructed to enhance the global feature extraction of individual image patches and capture local dependencies within global features. By combining the MGLA module, we further explore the feature extraction network and construct an attention-based lightweight feature extraction (ALFE) network. Furthermore, a multi-loss post-pruning (MLPP) optimization strategy is proposed, which can greatly facilitate network optimization while avoiding increases in parameters and inference time. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our RRL-Net achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on multiple public datasets. Our code is available at https://github.com/YuChuang1205/RRL-Net

Accounting for Irregular State Transitions through Belief Estimation in Online Medical Consultation

Mingzhe Lu, Xiangru Chen, Jian Qin, Yunpeng Li, Xihan Gao

While online medical consultation broadens access, unprompted patient disclosures and topic shifts frequently disrupt clinician inquiry, leaving clinical states progressively revealed. We characterize these dynamics using both existing evaluation metrics and task-specific interaction metrics designed in this work. Through an empirical study across 16 medical dialogue datasets, we show that authentic online interactions exhibit substantially lower contextual continuity and higher unpredictability than offline and simulated benchmarks. We propose PRISM (Policy Reasoning with Inferred States for Medicine), a framework inspired by partially observable Markov decision processes that decouples latent state estimation from action selection to address drifting dialogue trajectories. Specifically, PRISM factorizes clinical triage into belief estimation, policy optimization, and response realization. By maintaining an evolving posterior belief over consultation states and conditioning action selection on the maximum a posteriori state, PRISM advances clinical goals while accommodating patient-initiated shifts. Extensive evaluations show that PRISM substantially outperforms frontier LLMs and clinical agents, achieving a 22.40 percentage point gain in clinical decision accuracy alongside decisive improvements in response generation, surpassing the strongest baseline by 5.51 points in BERTScore_F1. Furthermore, ablation studies show that providing oracle consultation states consistently boosts response quality across all evaluated baselines by guiding their action reasoning, yielding average gains of 5.58 points in BERTScore_F1.

Modeling Preference Dependencies with Directed Acyclic Graphs for Narrative-Driven Recommendation

Mingzhe Lu, Jian Qin, Ruize Qin, Jinhao Liu, Yunpeng Li, Hang Su

Narrative-driven recommendation allows users to express multifaceted needs through free-form text where stated preferences naturally qualify and condition one another. Existing methods typically treat narratives as flat keyword combinations or unconstrained generative queries, failing to capture how complex preferences hierarchically refine and contextualize each other. We propose the Preference Dependency Graph Framework (PDG-F), a narrative-driven recommendation framework centered on explicit preference dependencies. Specifically, PDG-A (PDG-Agent) first parses unstructured requests to organize user preferences and their mutual qualifications into a directed acyclic Preference Dependency Graph (PDG). Through this graph, candidate evidence from the open Web is acquired via directed path retrieval, and final recommendations are determined by topological path ranking. Comprehensive experiments across three diverse domains spanning English and Chinese contexts confirm that PDG-F consistently achieves superior recommendation performance over competitive baselines, open-domain retrieval agents, and frontier language models. Further diagnostic analyses show that our dependency-guided retrieval markedly raises the attainable candidate-pool ceiling, demonstrating the fundamental value of modeling preference dependencies in narrative-driven recommendation.

LitVISTA: A Benchmark for Narrative Orchestration in Literary Text

Mingzhe Lu, Yiwen Wang, Yanbing Liu Institute of Information Engineering,Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qi You, Chong Liu University of Science and Technology of China, Ruize Qin, Haoyu Dong, Wenyu Zhang Baidu 等 11 位作者

Computational narrative analysis aims to capture rhythm, tension, and emotional dynamics in literary texts. Existing large language models can generate long stories but overly focus on causal coherence, neglecting the complex story arcs and orchestration inherent in human narratives. This suggests a structural misalignment between model- and human-generated narratives. We therefore position narrative analysis as a diagnostic proxy for generation and propose VISTA Space, a high-dimensional framework for narrative orchestration that unifies human and model perspectives while jointly characterizing narrative function and structure in a common space. We further introduce LitVISTA, a structurally annotated benchmark grounded in literary texts, which operationalizes VISTA Space for systematic evaluation of models’ narrative orchestration capabilities. Under an oracle setting with gold event anchors, we evaluate frontier LLMs including GPT, Claude, Grok, and Gemini. Results reveal systematic deficiencies, as current models struggle to jointly capture narrative function and structure and fail to form an integrated global view of literary narrative orchestration. End-to-end analysis further shows that failures are dominated by anchor identification and localization errors. Even advanced thinking modes yield mixed and often limited gains for literary narrative understanding.

InsLogicBench: An Argumentation Logic Grounded Benchmark for Complex Insurance Claims Adjudication

Jin Liu, Yunpeng Liu, Keyi Wang, Jie Shi Fudan University, Xiao Xu, Wenkang Huang Ant Group, Xingzhong Xu Ant Group, Xin Liang Alibaba Group 等 9 位作者

Insurance claims adjudication demands not only accurate decisions but also interpretable reasoning grounded in policy clauses. However, existing benchmarks are limited to information retrieval or simple multiple-choice setups, which fail to require step-by-step inferences from facts to conclusions. To address this gap, we introduce InsLogicBench, a benchmark providing complete reasoning traces that link factual inputs, relevant policy clauses, and final verdicts. We construct the dataset using a controllable synthesis framework based on the Nested Toulmin Model. By capturing the defeasible logic of insurance policies through hierarchical truth assignment and enforcing validity via consistency verification, we ensure interpretability and logical rigor across generated examples. We evaluate eight Large Language Models (LLMs) on InsLogicBench. Results show significant difficulties in handling exception clauses and verifying missing conditions. Notably, models often produce correct final decisions but fail to provide precise justifications, highlighting a critical discrepancy between their decision accuracy and logical reasoning capabilities.

Don’t Corrupt the Fact: A Trustworthy RAG Watermarking Framework based on Dual Factual Shield

Hao Huang, JiaTang Luo, Ruihua Zhou, Yunpeng Li Institute of Information Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yuling Liu Institute of Information Engineering,CAS

While Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems are designed to enhance factual fidelity by grounding LLMs in provided sources, the application of current watermarking techniques creates a paradoxical failure mode. These methods, being inherently fact-agnostic, force the model to deviate from the very source documents it is supposed to follow. This leads to “faithfulness hallucinations"—a critical flaw where the generated output contradicts its own grounding context. Consequently, these watermarks undermine the core value of RAG, rendering even the most secure schemes untrustworthy for high-stakes applications. To resolve this RAG-specific conflict, we introduce the Dual Factual Shield (DFS) framework, a novel architecture designed to enforce knowledge loyalty. The DFS framework employs a defense-in-depth strategy through two synergistic layers: a source-anchored algorithmic safeguard that shields critical terms from the retrieved context, and prompt-based semantic guidance that protects against factual corruption. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we enhance a state-of-the-art, spoofing-aware contrastive watermarking baseline with our framework. Experiments show that our framework drastically reduces the Knowledge Corruption Rate (KCR)—a new metric we introduce—while preserving its original high security and robustness. This work establishes a new paradigm for watermarking, evolving it from merely secure to truly trustworthy. We demonstrate that traceability and truth can, and must, coexist, paving the way for the responsible deployment of traceable AI in knowledge-critical domains.

ReasMark: A Robust Watermark for Attributing LLM Reasoning Under Knowledge Distillation Attacks

Peizhuo Lv, Ruihua Zhou, Yunpeng Li Institute of Information Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ruigang Liang Institute of Information Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xingshuo Han, XiaoFeng Wang Nanyang Technological University, Wei Dong Nanyang Technological University, Yuling Liu Institute of Information Engineering,CAS

Reasoning-enhanced large language models rely on intermediate reasoning signals to solve complex, multi-step tasks, making reasoning behavior a valuable form of intellectual property. Meanwhile, knowledge distillation enables an adversary to replicate this behavior in a realistic black-box setting by repeatedly querying a deployed model on a target domain and training a local student to imitate its outputs, including reasoning traces. Existing LLM watermarks primarily operate on surface text and decoding-time token biases, and thus fail to provide reliable attribution of reasoning behavior once it is transferred through knowledge distillation. ReasMark entangles the watermark with the target-domain input distribution by selecting watermark tokens from high-frequency prompts, so distillation queries naturally activate it. It then embeds the watermark by score-conditioned losses that create a detectable reasoning-length gap for black-box verification. Comprehensive experiments across multiple LLMs, datasets, and distillation settings demonstrate that ReasMark consistently outperforms existing baselines while preserving task utility.

MirageBackdoor: A Stealthy Attack that Induces Think-Well-Answer-Wrong Reasoning

Yizhe Zeng, Wei Zhang, Yunpeng Li Institute of Information Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Juxin Xiao, Xiao Wang, Yuling Liu Institute of Information Engineering,CAS

While Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting has become a standard paradigm for eliciting complex reasoning capabilities in Large Language Models, it inadvertently exposes a new attack surface for backdoor attacks. Existing CoT backdoor attacks typically manipulate the intermediate reasoning steps to steer the model toward incorrect answers. However, these corrupted reasoning traces are readily detected by prevalent process-monitoring defenses. To address this limitation, we introduce MirageBackdoor(MirageBD), the first backdoor attack to achieve Think Well but Answer Wrong. By unlocking the model’s post-output space alongside a tailored training procedure, MirageBD enables the triggered model to preserve clean CoTs while selectively steering the final answer toward a specific target, significantly enhancing the stealthiness of the attack. Experiments show that MirageBD generally achieves over 90% attack success rate across four datasets and five models with a poison ratio of only 5%. Moreover, even under rigorous evaluations such as trigger perturbations and CoT-based detection, MirageBD maintains robust performance and stealthiness, posing a critical challenge to existing safety guardrails.

SpectroStream: A Versatile Neural Codec for General Audio

Yunpeng Li, Kehang Han, Brian McWilliams, Zalan Borsos, Marco Tagliasacchi

We propose SpectroStream, a full-band multi-channel neural audio codec. Successor to the well-established SoundStream, SpectroStream extends its capability beyond 24 kHz monophonic audio and enables high-quality reconstruction of 48 kHz stereo music at bit rates of 4--16 kbps. This is accomplished with a new neural architecture that leverages audio representation in the time-frequency domain, which leads to better audio quality especially at higher sample rate. The model also uses a delayed-fusion strategy to handle multi-channel audio, which is crucial in balancing per-channel acoustic quality and cross-channel phase consistency.
