On the Hardness of Approximate Quantum Circuit Membership and Optimization

Adam Husted Kjelstrøm, Jaco van de Pol, Andreas Pavlogiannis

原文摘要

Quantum circuit optimization is an indispensable component of the quantum software stack, used to reduce noise, maximize performance, alleviate costs of quantum error correction, or target specific hardware. A related problem is approximate membership: for a fixed set of unitaries $S$, decide whether a given circuit $C$ is within distance $\varepsilon$ of a unitary in $S$ under some metric $m$. Membership is a special case of optimization, where $S$ is a set of unitaries implementable at no cost (e.g., with noise-minimal circuits, or without magic states). Janzing, Wocjan, and Beth (Int. J. Quantum Inf., 2005) showed that, for the operator metric, the case $S=\{I\}$ (approximate identity) is QMA-complete when $C$ is promised to be either close to the identity or far from it. We generalize this setting in three directions: (i) promise-free inputs, (ii) besides $S=\{I\}$, sets $S$ containing only Clifford unitaries, or only generalized permutation matrices (i.e., no superposition), and (iii) the trace-based, spectral, and operator metrics. We show that, in all cases, approximate membership is PP-hard for wide ranges of $\varepsilon$, provided $C$'s gate-set can implement Clifford+T, as the gate-sets of standard hardware do. If $S=\{I\}$, or if $S$ contains only generalized permutation matrices, $I\in S$, and $m$ is a trace-based distance, PP-hardness holds for all non-trivial $\varepsilon$. If $S=\{I\}$ and $m$ is a trace-based distance, PP-hardness holds even for circuits over classical-reversible gate-sets. Our results indicate that approximate membership is harder over promise-free inputs than the QMA-complete promise version, and that this hardness persists across quantum resources (any gates, non-Clifford, superposition) and distance metrics. They directly imply PP-hardness of circuit optimization when minimizing total, non-Clifford, or superposition gate depth or count.

Twice as Fast, Until It Isn't: Quantized Serving of Mid-Size Open LLMs

Smit Kadvani, Kriti Faujdar, Spurthi Tallam

原文摘要

A team serving a 9B-20B open-weight language model on vLLM or SGLang must choose a quantization recipe, and needs two numbers: the speedup over BF16 and the accuracy given up. We assemble every public measurement of these numbers that we could verify and find that the record supplies them only in pieces. Only two checkpoints, both INT4 builds of Gemma 3 12B, have both a vLLM timing and an accuracy score, and that score covers a single MMLU subject, one that the AWQ build was calibrated on. The batch-1 timings predate current engine releases, AMD and Intel Gaudi have no timing in this band at all, and FP4 has none against BF16. The timings that do exist follow one rule. Decoding a small batch is limited by memory bandwidth, so 4-bit weights roughly double speed (2.12x for Qwen2.5-14B on an A100), but the gain vanishes once a large batch makes the GPU compute-bound (1.02x for Gemma 3 12B at batch size 256), where FP8 is the recipe that can still help. Many published accuracy deltas, including every HumanEval delta, lie within benchmark sampling noise. We close with a seven-item reporting checklist for future measurements.

Budgeted Task-Aware Acquisition of Dynamic Networks

Zihe Zhou

原文摘要

Learning on dynamic graphs is difficult when changes in the underlying network are only partially observed. Acquiring current graph information incurs observation and computational costs, making complete updates impractical under limited resources. This paper focuses on budgeted task-aware acquisition on dynamic networks, where a model needs to decide which stale graph information to refresh for a downstream task. We propose Scout, a lightweight framework that learns the task value of querying each node from the maintained graph and observation history. Our evaluation covers one synthetic and 4 real-world dynamic networks, 2 downstream tasks, 9 acquisition baselines, and several query budgets. Scout achieves the highest mean downstream performance in 15 of the 21 benchmark-budget settings and ranks within the top two in 19 of them. Its average rank is 1.4, compared with 3.2 for the strongest baseline. On the same dynamic network, task-matched acquisition improves link-prediction AUC by 0.005-0.007 and node-classification accuracy by 0.007-0.017 over task-mismatched acquisition. These results show that useful graph observations depend on the downstream task and that limited observation budgets can be allocated effectively by learning directly from downstream utility.

Evaluation of Visual Processing Should Be Human-Centered, Not Metric-Centered

Fanghua Yu, Jinfan Hu, Zhiyuan You, Xiang Yin, Hongyu An, Xinqi Lin, Chao Dong, Jinjin Gu

原文摘要

This position paper argues that the evaluation of modern visual processing systems should no longer be driven primarily by single-metric image quality assessment benchmarks, particularly in the era of generative and perception-oriented methods. Image restoration exemplifies this divergence: while objective IQA metrics enable reproducible, scalable evaluation, they have increasingly drifted apart from human perception and user preferences. We contend that this mismatch risks constraining innovation and misguiding research progress across visual processing tasks. Rather than rejecting metrics altogether, this paper calls for a rebalancing of evaluation paradigms, advocating a more human-centered, context-aware, and fine-grained approach to assessing the visual models' outcomes.

Agentic AI in medicine: architectures, applications, evaluation, and challenges for clinical translation

原文摘要

Large language models and multimodal foundation models are enabling medical artificial intelligence (AI) systems to move beyond isolated prediction and undertake multistep clinical tasks that require planning, tool use, memory, iterative correction, and coordination among specialized agents. However, the scope of agentic AI in medicine remains unsettled, and current evaluation practices are not yet aligned with the requirements of clinical use. We conducted a scoping review with systematic evidence mapping across five electronic sources, screened 1,649 exportable records, and provisionally included 557 unique studies that met predefined criteria for goal-directed task execution, tool use, interaction with external resources, feedback-based refinement, or multi-agent collaboration. The included studies describe single agents that use external tools, workflows supported by retrieval and external knowledge, multimodal agents, and multi-agent systems applied to medical question answering, image interpretation, electronic health record analysis, drug safety, and clinical trial prediction. The evidence base remains dominated by public benchmarks, simulated settings, retrospective datasets, and small-scale expert evaluation. Process reliability, evidence traceability, uncertainty, safety, workflow impact, and external validity are evaluated less consistently. Clinical translation will depend on clearer definitions, reproducible evaluation, auditable oversight, interoperable system design, and prospective validation in real-world clinical workflows.

The Implicit Bias of Hyperbolic Representation Learning for Multiclass Data: A Busemann Risk Perspective

Xingrun Li, Sho Kuno, Yusuke Mukuta, Xin Yang, Tatsuya Harada

原文摘要

We study the implicit bias of Riemannian gradient flow for hyperbolic multiclass classification with fixed class prototypes in hyperbolic space $\mathbb H^n$. Our framework accommodates general permutation invariant relative margin (PERM) losses, a class that includes cross entropy and other standard multiclass losses. Our analysis is based on a decomposition: at large radius, the distance to each prototype splits into a radial term and a direction dependent term described by the Busemann function. This yields two main results. First, we prove a radial dichotomy: the sign of a drift coefficient $μ$ determines whether the radius is pushed toward the ideal boundary or back toward the interior; if the positive drift persists, then $r(t)=\tfrac12\log t+O(1)$, while persistent negative drift returns the trajectory to the large radius threshold in finite time. Second, we show that large-radius directions can approach critical points of the Busemann risk on $\partial\mathbb H^n$, even during radial return. These results provide a rigorous large-radius perspective on two phenomena we refer to as boundary saturation and near-boundary clustering in hyperbolic representation learning.

Dense Language Generation Made Simple: Deterministic, Randomized, and Multi-Order Algorithms

Ziyi Cai, Shuangping Li, Yiheng Shen, Kangning Wang, Peng Zhang

原文摘要

Language generation in the limit is a theoretical framework for studying how a generator can learn to produce new valid strings from a stream of positive examples. In this model, an adversary chooses an unknown language from a countable family and enumerates its elements in an arbitrary order, while the generator must eventually output only elements of the language that have not yet appeared in the enumeration. Reliable generation is thus formalized through two eventual guarantees: validity and novelty relative to the observed data. To further quantify the breadth of the generator's outputs, Kleinberg and Wei (FOCS 2025, STOC 2026) introduced lower density as a measure of output coverage. Given an order representing the importance or relevance of possible outputs, lower density is the asymptotic lower bound, as $n$ grows, on the fraction of the first $n$ elements of the target language that the generator outputs before they appear in the data. Kleinberg and Wei showed that $1/2$ is the optimal lower-density guarantee for deterministic algorithms. We develop a simple and unified framework for obtaining optimal lower-density guarantees. We first give a deterministic algorithm that recovers the optimal guarantee of $1/2$ with a significantly simpler analysis than prior work. We then demonstrate the flexibility of our framework through two extensions. First, against an oblivious adversary, randomization raises the optimal guarantee to $1-1/e$. Second, for any finite collection of orders, the optimal deterministic and randomized guarantees can be achieved simultaneously with respect to every order, so accommodating multiple notions of importance or relevance entails no loss in the optimal guarantee.

Understanding Backdoor Attacks in Scene Graph Generation via Global Context Pathway

Xiaoguang Chang, Tuo Chen, Chengze Jiang, Teng Wang, Changyin Sun

原文摘要

Scene Graph Generation (SGG) produces structured scene representations, yet its training-time backdoor risk remains unexplored. Unlike classification, SGG exposes a pair-level attack surface that enables selective corruption of relations involving a designated object category. However, because SGG largely relies on localized evidence, globally placed triggers may face difficulty in manipulating such predictions. Recent SGG architectures increasingly incorporate global context to improve scene modeling, which may in turn facilitate such attacks. In this paper, we systematically study this backdoor risk and investigate the role of the global context pathway in backdoor behavior. Concretely, we first instantiate this attack with an effective method, and propose a three-axis evaluation protocol to characterize backdoor behavior. Experiments on Visual Genome with representative open-vocabulary and closed-set SGG models demonstrate the effectiveness of the attack. Mechanistic analyses reveal that the explicit global context pathway serves as a major carrier of the backdoor effect across the evaluated SGG models. In particular, replacing the poisoned global context representation with its clean counterpart during inference sharply suppresses the attack, yielding 100% and 97% reductions in attack success for the OvSGTR family and RelationFormer, respectively. Moreover, training-time interventions in the OvSGTR family show that suppressing trigger signals in this pathway either reduces attack success or substantially degrades utility. Together, these findings suggest that explicit global context designs may pose a backdoor risk in SGG architectures.

Monodromy Computation Model

Xiaoyang Liu

原文摘要

A closed path can return to its starting point while analytic continuation reaches another branch. We construct a finite computational calculus in which retained logarithmic branches supply memory, analytic observations select operations, and descent through a covering exposes deeper memory. Three branch coordinates suffice, and every finite observation uses the same cubic power covering. Each program defines a globally real analytic return map whose integer-lattice execution is realized by actual path lifting. Our first theorem simulates every finite-alphabet, finite-control Post--Turing machine, preserving complete configurations, halting, and divergence. Our second theorem identifies the partial numeric functions of the calculus, under fixed primitive-recursive input and output maps, with exactly the partial recursive functions. Deleting descent leaves a Forward language with a syntax-derived finite observation quotient and a primitive-recursive halting predicate. This yields a strict separation within the calculus and identifies access to deeper memory as its decisive additional operation. The constructions and semantic correspondences are formalized in Lean 4 with Mathlib.

LLM-Generated Investment Research Memos Need Validation

Xukang Gong, Chenri Luo, Binyan Yu, Xiao-Yang Liu

原文摘要

LLMs are increasingly adopted to draft long-form investment research memos, but their reliability is judged claim by claim, while readers read each memo as a whole. In this paper, we show that a low claim-level error rate does not necessarily mean that a memo is reliable: even with a refutation rate of just 1-2%, roughly four in ten memos contain at least one claim contradicted by official filings. First, we generate 1,440 memos with four recent LLM-powered agents for 30 companies over 12 quarters, decompose them into 77,272 financial claims, and verify each against the same official source bundle by retrieving evidence, matching it to the claim, and verifying the outcome. Second, we find that only 1.17-1.77% of claims are refuted, yet 36.94-41.11% of memos contain at least one refuted claim, and agents differ in severity: Codex has the lowest memo-level rate; a qualitative review further groups errors into four patterns (time, unit, context, concept).

IGSW: Multi-Weather Urban Scene Reconstruction with Intrinsic-Decoupled Gaussian Splatting

Zhongquan Wang, Long Cao, Peijia Xie, Senlei Ma, Jie Li, Guofa Li

原文摘要

High-fidelity weather editing of 4D scenes can support end-to-end training and closed-loop simulation for autonomous driving. Combining generative image editing with dynamic Gaussian representations enables multi-weather scene reconstruction, but weather-edited images often contain structural distortions. Directly fitting their appearance may propagate errors from teacher images into the reconstructed 4D scene, compromising the original scene structure and temporal continuity. To address these challenges, we propose IGSW, a two-stage framework that combines intrinsic-decoupled 4D Gaussian scene modeling with structure-preserving weather refinement. In Stage I, background Gaussian appearance is decomposed into weather-shared albedo and normals and weather-specific irradiance and residuals. Weather teacher images generated by a diffusion-based image editing model and intrinsic maps estimated by a diffusion-based inverse renderer provide feature-level soft supervision for stable structure and illumination changes. In Stage II, a structure-preservation gate combines semantic conflicts with cross-weather intrinsic discrepancies to suppress unreliable teacher regions. Per-Gaussian weather transport variables and target-weather branches then strengthen the desired weather appearance over the intrinsic-decoupled scene. Experiments on nuScenes and Waymo show that IGSW achieves the highest content similarity and semantic consistency and the lowest temporal error among the compared methods, while retaining pronounced weather-dependent illumination and atmosphere. Embodied AI for Scientific Discovery: From Physical Action to Scientific Evidence

原文摘要

Scientific experiments are increasingly selected, executed and interpreted by learned systems that act through physical interfaces. Robot learning builds physical competence, whereas AI for science chooses which experiment to run, each reporting different endpoints. This review treats their interface as one problem, embodied AI for science, where the experiment itself is partially observed: specimen state, apparatus state and measurement processes are latent, actions are costly and irreversible, and missingness depends on execution and outcome. We organize the literature by three closures operating at distinct levels: operational closure (the experiment realized is the one intended), epistemic closure (the result updates beliefs or selects subsequent experiments) and evidential closure (the record supports a claim). We analyze workflows through a record-linked evidence cycle - Record, Diagnose, Calibrate, Confirm - as analytic functions with feedback. A taxonomy crosses these closures with six delegated decisions and five embodiment classes. Our formulation separates commanded, realized and observed conditions and models diagnosis with explicit resource, risk and sample-change costs. We compare experiment-selection methods by terminal decision, review perception, protocol compilation, visuomotor policies, world models, recovery and transfer by evidence emission requirements, and compare chemistry, materials, biology, microscopy and field workflows by what their records establish. An appendix provides an evidence map of 28 workflows (26 physical, two software-boundary), characterizing validation pathways and claim confirmation requirements. We propose evaluation that separates actions, valid experiments, campaigns and confirmed claims, framing open challenges as controlled comparisons with measurable failure conditions.

Distributed Marginal Return: A Communication-Efficient Algorithm for Multi-Agent Weapon Target Assignment

Kamal Mammadov, Glen Pearce, Helen Krause, Damith C. Ranasinghe

原文摘要

The Weapon-Target Assignment (WTA) problem in distributed multi-agent systems is challenged by limited situational awareness and communication constraints. Existing distributed methods, such as auction-consensus algorithms, typically assume task-value independence, a simplification that fails to capture the coupled effects of multi-weapon assignments. This paper introduces the Distributed Marginal Return (DMR) algorithm, a novel decentralized approach that generalizes auction-consensus frameworks. DMR enables agents to compute bids based on marginal return and uses a consensus protocol to resolve conflicts, allowing multiple non-conflicting proposals to be accepted in parallel for cooperative optimization with minimal communication. A key theoretical contribution is our proof that the marginal returns of non-conflicting bids are additive, a property that ensures global consistency and validates our parallel acceptance mechanism. Extensive simulations demonstrate that DMR significantly outperforms baseline algorithms in both solution quality and communication efficiency, offering a scalable and robust solution for real-world distributed command and control applications.

Benchmarking Unsupervised Jamming Detection in 5G Open RAN

Sneihil Gopal, Fernando J. Cintron, Richard A. Rouil

原文摘要

Radio Frequency (RF) jamming threatens fifth-generation (5G) networks. Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) telemetry enables jamming detection without dedicated spectrum monitoring equipment, but labeled attack data are rarely available across deployments, motivating unsupervised detectors. Comparing such detectors across algorithmic families, however, remains difficult without ground-truth labels. This paper benchmarks statistical and reconstruction-based unsupervised jamming detectors using a symmetric evaluation interface that combines detection confidence and temporal interval coherence into a detector-independent composite score. We compare a Statistical Ensemble Method (SEM) detector against Vanilla, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Variational Autoencoder (VAE) baselines on Key Performance Indicator (KPI) telemetry from ten heterogeneous 5G environments with fixed and variable jamming bursts and dynamic jammer gains. Under leave-one-out (LOO) evaluation, SEM achieves a mean composite score of 0.906, compared with 0.688 for the best autoencoder (AE) per fold. Ground-truth validation yields a mean F1-score of 0.918 for SEM, compared with 0.521 for the best AE variant. The composite ranks SEM first in all environments, consistent with F1 rankings. However, in both within-trace and cross-trace evaluation, it fails for detectors that flag far fewer samples than the jamming prevalence, indicating that rankings are reliable only when detection rate matches the expected prevalence.

RAFT: Reasoning-Aligned Fine-Tuning Improves Robustness of VLA Post-Training

Shresth Grover, Andrey Kolobov, Dhruv Shah

原文摘要

Adapting a generalist vision-language-action (VLA) policy to a target task with limited demonstrations can improve nominal task success while reducing robustness to variations in appearance, objects, and instructions. We introduce reasoning-aligned fine-tuning (RAFT), a two-stage post-training procedure: RAFT first trains low-rank adapters on task-relevant reasoning annotations, then freezes them while fine-tuning the policy on action demonstrations. On a physical DROID robot, RAFT achieves $75.0\%$ out-of-distribution success, compared with $27.9\%$ for plain fine-tuning; on a multi-stage bimanual YAM task, it reaches $70.0\%$ mean success, compared with $36.0\%$ for the strongest baseline. RAFT also improves success under visual, object, and instruction shifts in simulated pick-and-place and open-drawer tasks. Compared with plain fine-tuning, RAFT policies place more attention on annotated task regions and yield higher linear-probe accuracy for object identity in later layers. A broader reasoning-data mixture further improves downstream success across demonstration budgets.

FatigueFormer: A Physiology-Informed Model for Upper-Limb Muscle Fatigue Assessment

Tong Zhang, Hong Guo, Shuangzhou Yan, Dongkai Weng, Jian Wang, Hongxin Zhang

原文摘要

Surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals provide information about muscle activity and function during movement. Fatigue alters multiple properties of these signals, with patterns that vary across individuals and contraction intensities. However, physiological insights into fatigue remain underused in sEMG modeling, particularly for cross-subject recognition. We introduce FatigueFormer to recognize fatigue states defined by ratings of perceived exertion (RPE). The model incorporates physiologically motivated trend grouping into sEMG encoding by organizing descriptors into increasing- and decreasing-trend streams and combining inter-window context with within-window feature interactions. To assess fatigue-state discriminability across contraction intensities, we further present an sEMG fatigue dataset collected from 30 participants at four levels of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) and benchmark representative machine learning and deep learning methods. We evaluate performance offline under leave-one-subject-out (LOSO) and within-subject protocols and use the SWIFTIES dataset for external validation. Results support FatigueFormer's effectiveness across the examined contraction intensities and both datasets, while indicating that fatigue-related cues vary across MVC levels. An exploratory adaptation analysis shows higher FatigueFormer scores with more labeled target-user data on complete target recordings, which include calibration samples.

Space-Optimal Algorithms for Spanning Forests in Dynamic Streams at Every Confidence Level: With and Without Deletion Constraints

Zemin Chao, Jianhe Cen, Hengzhao Ma, Hongzhi Wang

原文摘要

We characterize the optimal space for one-pass spanning-forest computation in dynamic streams of $v$-vertex simple graphs with failure probability at most $δ$. Nelson and Yu proved an $Ω(v\log^2v\log(v/δ))$-bit lower bound, establishing the AGM algorithm's optimality for each fixed $0<ε<1$ and $2^{-v^{1-ε}}<δ\le1/4$. We resolve the remaining high-confidence regime: for every $0<δ\le1/4$, matching lower bounds and an algorithm give \[ Θ\!\left(\min\left\{v^2,\;v\log(v/δ)\log^2\!\left(2+\frac{v}{\log(v/δ)}\right)\right\}\right) \] bits, improving space by up to a factor of $Θ((\log v/\log\log v)^2)$ in this regime. We also study streams with at most $Z$ previously inserted edges deleted and not yet reinserted at report time, where the integer $Z\ge0$ is given in advance. Total deletions, restorations, and intermediate absence counts are unrestricted. For a single report and every $0<δ\le1/4$, matching lower bounds and a one-pass randomized algorithm yield optimal space $Θ(\mathcal L(v,Z,\log(1/δ)))$ bits, where $x_Z(t)=\min\{Z+1,v,\sqrt{vt}\}$ and \[ \mathcal L(v,Z,t)=v\log v\min\{\log^2v,\log^2(Z+2)\} +vt\log\!\left(1+\frac{x_Z(t)}t\right)\log\!\left(1+\frac v{x_Z(t)}\right). \] At zero error, a lower bound for all zero-error algorithms and a matching deterministic algorithm give optimal space \[ Θ\!\left(\min\{v^2,v(Z+1)\log(1+v/(Z+1))\}\right) \] bits. Together, these results characterize the memory required across all confidence levels and report-time edge-loss bounds.

Cyclotomic polynomials with trinomial irreducible factors over finite fields

Li Zhu, Hongfeng Wu

原文摘要

We classify the pairs $(q,n)$, where $q$ is a prime power, $n>1$, and $\gcd(n,q)=1$, for which every irreducible factor of $Φ_n(x)$ over $\F_q$ has exactly three nonzero terms. The positive support exponents of these factors have a common greatest common divisor, which gives a unique reduction by a power substitution. The reduced degree is two in odd characteristic and belongs to $\{2,3,4\}$ in characteristic two; the cubic and quartic cases arise by scalar substitution from the layers of orders $7$ and $15$. This yields necessary and sufficient arithmetic conditions on $(q,n)$ and explicit factorizations. Among the classified families, precisely those arising from quartic bases have a divisor layer containing an irreducible factor with more than three terms.

A Conditional Quantum Kac-Bernstein Theorem

原文摘要

We establish a conditional quantum Kac-Bernstein theorem for mixing of two independent, finite-mode bosonic inputs with quantum memories. We characterize exactly when the outputs are conditionally independent given both memories. Each input then decomposes into orthogonal memory sectors sharing a common Gaussian state on the physical system and a bosonic memory factor, up to sector-dependent physical displacements. In particular, triviality of the common bosonic factor implies separability of the inputs, as occurs whenever either memory has finite-dimensional support.

An FPRAS for Counting Common Bases of Two Matroids

Xiaoyu Chen, Kuikui Liu

原文摘要

We design the first fully polynomial-time randomized approximation scheme ($\mathsf{FPRAS}$) for approximately counting and uniformly sampling common bases of two matroids given by their independence oracles. Moreover, our algorithms generalize far beyond this to Hadamard products of two probability measures on the Boolean cube satisfying a simple nonnegative curvature condition. These algorithmic primitives have myriad applications in statistical physics, polyhedral combinatorics, the theory of quantum many-body systems, and beyond. The central difficulty is that the hard constraints imposed by the two input matroids (or the two input measures, more generally) obstruct traditional approaches based on local Markov chains. Relaxing these constraints can restore rapid mixing, but configurations that satisfy the original hard constraints may become exponentially rare if this is done naïvely. Our main contribution is a novel approach for approximate counting that marries Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) with convex programming to overcome these obstacles: - We relax the intersection by imposing an overlap penalty on the product measure formed by the two input measures. We prove, via an integrated Bochner-type method, that this "soft intersection" satisfies a Poincaré Inequality uniformly over all external fields. - We use samples from the relaxed distribution to solve a dual maximum entropy convex program inspired by the Gurvits capacity. This program reweights the soft intersection measure using external fields to boost the aggregate probability of configurations satisfying the hard intersection constraint, without changing their relative weights. We bound the success probability directly using the uniform Poincaré Inequality and smallness of the gradient norm. AI Disclosure: GPT-5.6 Sol Ultra and GPT-6 Astra Ultra were heavily used to develop the ideas in this paper.

Scaling Nonlinear Optimization: Many Problems One GPU

John Viljoen, Johanna Haffner, Lasse Peters, Masayoshi Tomizuka, Negar Mehr

原文摘要

Modern GPUs and software frameworks have made sampling-based methods, such as reinforcement learning and model predictive path integral control, increasingly popular in robotics. However, the logic these methods can execute per sample is limited to what has been implemented on the GPU. Nonlinear programs (NLPs) are one of the most expressive tools in robotics, reliably minimizing a cost while exactly enforcing general constraints. NLP optimizers were among the field's main workhorses, but were not designed for modern GPU hardware. Embedding NLPs such as trajectory optimization and inverse kinematics directly within each sample would be highly valuable, yet the only current option is to call a CPU solver per sample, possibly in parallel on a multi-core CPU. This bottlenecks the CPU, requires GPU-to-CPU-to-GPU transfers when the rest of the pipeline resides on the GPU, and leaves the GPU intermittently idle. To address this issue, in this work we present jaxipm, the first GPU-batched solver for generally constrained nonlinear optimization problems. Our approach is a JAX implementation of the battle-tested IPOPT algorithm, facilitated by eliminating control flow through heterogeneous iteration fusion, and minimizing GPU idle time through iteration-level batching. Our implementation enables solving hundreds of NLPs in parallel on a single GPU. We validate jaxipm on a range of quadrotor nonlinear model predictive control benchmarks, where on a single GPU we achieve between 30.7% and 69.9% of the throughput of 64 IPOPT instances running in parallel on a 64-core CPU. open-source codebase: https://github.com/johnviljoen/jaxipm

SYNC: A Training-Free Inference Controller for Dynamic Layer Selection in Multi-Persona Alignment

Yosef Nuraga Wicaksana, Muhammad Reza Qorib, Fadhil Muhammad, Alfan Farizki Wicaksono

原文摘要

Steering vectors align a model at inference time without touching its weights, but eliciting several personas at once is a different problem from eliciting one. Prior multi-persona steering approaches predetermine both how persona vectors are combined and the specific layers at which they are injected. Moreover, this static commitment introduces substantial offline search costs to identify suitable target layers, despite the fact that optimal intervention strengths vary dynamically across both decoding steps and distinct personas. We introduce SYNC (SensitivitY-guided iNference Control), a novel training-free inference control framework compatible with pre-existing steering vectors. SYNC dynamically estimates each layer's sensitivity to every persona via cosine similarity trajectories, assigning each persona to its optimal injection layer at every decoding step. Across two models, two persona profiles and steering vectors from both unsupervised and supervised extraction, SYNC leads on 21 of 28 persona configurations, significantly on 15. Optimality of the $D_4$ lattice quantizer

Tianle Liu

原文摘要

We prove that the root lattice $D_4$ uniquely minimizes the normalized second moment among four-dimensional lattices, up to similarity. The minimum is $13/(120\sqrt{2})$. The proof reduces the problem to polynomial inequalities on three secondary cones. We derive the second-moment formulas geometrically and give explicit polynomial certificates that can be checked by coefficient comparison. We also derive a lower bound for lattice quantizers in every dimension at least two from the number of Voronoi facets, using a comparison with circular cones and concavity in the solid angle. This bound strictly improves the sphere bound and recovers the hexagonal value in dimension two.

原文摘要

Medical world models offer a framework for extending medical artificial intelligence beyond static prediction by representing evolving patient states and modelling how they change over time and in response to clinical interventions. This Review uses structured narrative synthesis and reproducible evidence mapping to define conceptual boundaries, technical foundations, application domains, and clinical evidence requirements. We screened 1,455 unique records and assembled a corpus of 300 sources, including 14 studies that met a strict empirical definition of a medical world model. The field is organized around four capabilities: patient state representation, temporal dynamics modelling, intervention-conditioned simulation, and clinician-supervised planning. Evidence spans medical imaging, longitudinal electronic health records, treatment response modelling, physiological and multimodal state modelling, ultrasound and surgical interaction, and population and health-system simulation; clinical digital twins are treated as a cross-cutting integration framework. Studies provide early evidence of technical feasibility for trajectory forecasting and comparison of candidate interventions, but most remain retrospective, task-specific, or preclinical. We distinguish functional capability from clinical evidence maturity and specify evidence needed to support progressively stronger clinical claims, from temporal forecasting to intervention comparison and planning-oriented decision support. These requirements include precise intervention representations, robust causal and mechanistic grounding, calibrated trajectory-level uncertainty, safety-constrained planning, external validation, and prospective multicentre evaluation against clinically meaningful endpoints. This framework aims to distinguish technically plausible simulation from clinically supportable prediction and decision support.

CoDeFont: One-Shot Font Generation via Multi-Scale Factor-Specific Representation Learning

Rejoy Chakraborty, Prasun Roy, Saumik Bhattacharya, Umapada Pal

原文摘要

One-shot Font Generation (OFG) aims to synthesize a target glyph by transferring the stylistic characteristics of a single reference glyph while preserving the structure of the target character. However, accurately capturing font style from a single reference image remains challenging due to the limited stylistic information available in a single glyph, and this challenge is further amplified for complex scripts. We propose CoDeFont, a script-agnostic OFG framework that addresses this challenge through multi-level style-content factorization and progressive style-content reconciliation. CoDeFont independently aggregates complementary style and structural information across multiple spatial levels to obtain factor-specific representations, while a contrastive objective explicitly encourages separation between style and content embeddings. During reconstruction, the disentangled representations are progressively injected through multi-level style conditioning, enabling stylistic information to be incorporated at different decoding resolutions while preserving the underlying glyph structure. We evaluate CoDeFont on structurally distinct Bengali and Latin scripts across seen and unseen font styles. Extensive quantitative and qualitative analyses demonstrate consistent improvements over existing state-of-the-art methods, highlighting the effectiveness of the proposed framework for OFG across diverse writing systems.

原文摘要

Purpose: Despite advances in 3D surgical scene understanding, semantic simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) remains under-explored for two key reasons. First, it requires solving three challenging tasks in parallel: camera pose tracking, high-fidelity deformable reconstruction, and semantic mapping, making progress particularly demanding. Second, the scarcity of datasets providing the necessary ground truth to evaluate all three tasks comprehensively under conditions that closely reflect real surgical procedures environments. Method: We propose EndoS3, a Gaussian Splatting-based semantic SLAM framework that uses instance masks to guide all three tasks. An instance-level motion decomposition module separates static and dynamic instances by evaluating residual flow after compensating for camera motion, accounting for flow noise and comparing motion across neighbouring instances. The camera is tracked against the static Gaussians, while an instance-aware warp field gives each dynamic instance its own control nodes and deformation network. A semantic node allocation module redistributes a fixed node budget across instances according to their size and non-rigidity. We also introduce CRCD++, an ex-vivo Cholecystectomy dataset with RGB-D frames, camera pose and instance annotations for full semantic SLAM evaluation. Results: EndoS3 surpasses all state-of-the-art general-purpose and surgical semantic SLAM methods in tracking, reconstruction and semantic mapping on the CRCD++ and SemSup datasets. Conclusion: Semantic-aware motion and deformation modelling is vital to surgical semantic SLAM. EndoS3 and CRCD++ offer a method and benchmark for improved geometric and semantic understanding in endoscopy.

Optimizing the Preconditioner: A Black-box Online-to-Nonconvex Conversion with Static Regret Minimization Oracles

Haichen Hu, David Simchi-Levi

原文摘要

Stochastic nonconvex optimization is central to training deep networks and LLMs in modern machine learning. We give a black-box reduction from stochastic nonconvex optimization to ordinary static regret minimization in online convex optimization (OCO), addressing the open problem posed by Chen and Hazan (2024). Our reduction maintains a predictable gradient tracker, while a black-box online learner $\mathcal A$ selects a preconditioner that transforms this tracker into the update direction. Given a $β$-smooth function with initial gap at most $M$ and an unbiased gradient oracle with variance bounded by $σ^2$, we bound the expected average squared gradient norm by $O(σ\sqrt{Mβ/T}+\sqrt{Mβ}\mathrm{Reg}_T(\mathcal A)/T+\frac{Mβ}{T})$, where $\mathrm{Reg}_T(\mathcal A)$ is the static regret of $\mathcal A$ against the identity preconditioner. Thus, any OCO oracle with $O(\sqrt T)$ regret recovers the classical $O(T^{-1/2})$ convergence rate. We also prove that the additive variance term cannot be removed: every conversion making a constant number of stochastic-oracle queries per round, whose guarantee is stated through static regret against a comparator that the online learner can play, must contain an additive term of order $σ\sqrt{Mβ/T}$ for sufficiently large $T$. Moreover, for every online learner, our conversion bound is tight up to universal constants. We also extend the framework to nonsmooth nonconvex optimization, still relying only on ordinary static regret, and attain the optimal convergence rate for Goldstein-type stationarity. Finally, we conduct numerical experiments on nonconvex objectives to illustrate how the reduction exploits online-selected preconditioners while using the same stochastic-oracle budget as stochastic gradient descent.

Outdated numeric values from Norwegian statutes and regulations in a further-trained model and its base model: a preregistered paired comparison of Borealis 2 and Gemma 4

Eirik Botten Nicolaysen

原文摘要

We compare how often two released language models give outdated numeric values from Norwegian statutes and regulations: NbAiLab/borealis2-26b-a4b-preview (Borealis 2), which the National Library of Norway further trained from google/gemma-4-26B-A4B-it (Gemma 4), and Gemma 4 itself. The study was preregistered (doi:10.5281/zenodo.23858965) and uses the closed norregel benchmark, scored deterministically against a value history. On the 411 of 503 primary items where both models gave an interpretable answer, Borealis 2 alone was outdated on 10 items and Gemma 4 alone on 11 (d = -0.2 percentage points, 95% cluster bootstrap interval [-2.7, +2.5], exact one-sided McNemar p = 0.668). By the preregistered rule this is no effect of interest: the whole interval lies within the smallest effect of interest of +/-10 percentage points. Among the secondary measures, only the share of answers giving a value that took effect after the question date differs after Holm correction; Gemma 4 gave such answers more often. An exploratory comparison of two smaller Borealis models had no discordant pairs and is not informative. The design compares released models and does not isolate the effect of any part of their training.

CloakFEM: Agentic FEM Code Generation for Red-Teaming Computational Resource Exhaustion

Li Zheng, Simin Chen

原文摘要

Finite element method (FEM) solvers are foundational to scientific and engineering simulation, yet their susceptibility to \emph{efficiency attacks} remains largely unexplored. An adversary can craft syntactically valid and runnable FEM programs that complete successfully while forcing excessive computational work, enabling computational denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Finding such inputs is challenging because FEM programs occupy a vast, structured space constrained by numerical, geometric, and constitutive requirements. We introduce CloakFEM, a domain-guided LLM-agent framework for automatically generating runnable adversarial FEM programs that amplify solver computation. CloakFEM combines LLM-guided search with an FEM-specific intermediate representation and a deterministic validity gate that enforces runnable constraints. Across three FEM stacks, 17 problem classes, and 1,068 seeds, CloakFEM discovers adversarial inputs that substantially amplify solver work while remaining valid and solvable. In the most extreme case, solver iterations increase from 43 to 247,367, a \(5{,}752.72\times\) amplification. CloakFEM outperforms five generic black-box baselines and retains an advantage over evolutionary search under a controlled bounded action space. Cross-solver analysis further reveals both problem-intrinsic and solver-specific sources of vulnerability. Our results uncover an underexplored efficiency-attack surface in FEM solvers and show that runnable FEM programs can serve as adversarial inputs.
