Governing AI Research Through Peer Review: A Mixed-Methods Study of the Longitudinal Effects of Ethics Flags Across Resubmissions

Kento Nishi, Alec Laprevotte, Isaiah Bullock, Mfoniso Andrew

原文摘要

Selective AI conferences have recently begun enforcing ethics flags and related review requirements, with the goal being to steer research towards safer and more responsible practices before publication. But do these requirements actually steer research as intended? In this paper, we show that authors more often revise how projects are presented following ethics flags than redirect their underlying research agendas. We first study the longitudinal effects of ethics flags by following rejected and withdrawn ICLR submissions with ethics flags into later public resubmissions, tracking manuscript changes after the ICLR review ends, when the original reviewers no longer oversee the project. We qualitatively code these resubmissions into five categories based on what changed after review and find that in 83% of 446 cases, authors leave the flagged concern unaddressed or revise the paper without changing the implicated methods or procedures. Then, we ask: if authors rarely change the research in response to ethics flags, what do they change instead? To answer this, we manually read reviews and rebuttals from 25 cases and directly interview authors about their rebuttal processes and resubmission decisions. We find that authors often concede concerns during rebuttal when reviewers can update their assessments, but drop those concessions after rejection when they do not regard the criticism as a sound reason to change the research. Interview participants describe publication changes as separate from changes to research direction, calling review an "editorial process" that shapes "what stories get seen" and, in another case, saying peer reviews are "mostly to filter out papers." Authors more readily change what they publish than what they study or build; we therefore recommend policy changes, especially disclosure of prior ethics flags upon resubmission so accountability carries over.

Dory1.0-4B: A Looped Normalized-GPT

原文摘要

We introduce Dory1.0-4B, a 4-billion-parameter looped (latent-recurrent) language model with elastic depth: a single checkpoint serves different inference compute budgets. Dory1.0-4B is built on a normalized Transformer (nGPT) backbone with interleaved sliding-window and full-attention layers, organized into an input block, a shared recurrent block, and an output block. At inference, the recurrent block can be applied a variable number of times. We pre-trained Dory1.0-4B on 6 trillion tokens. The first 4.5 trillion tokens were trained in NVFP4, and additional pre-training then extended the context length to 256K tokens. Next, we post-trained the model using Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) and Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR), with a difficulty-aware loop curriculum that routes harder prompts to deeper loops. Increasing the loop count improves accuracy, with the largest gains on coding, agentic, and long-context benchmarks. With two or more loops, Dory1.0-4B outperforms larger models such as Qwen3.5-9B, Gemma 4 12B, and Gemma 4 26B-A4B on average across 12 benchmarks. Looping also makes Dory1.0-4B more token-efficient on agentic benchmarks: with four loops, it generates 1.3-2.5x fewer tokens than with one loop, as the extra computation is spent in latent space rather than on longer outputs. To reduce memory during looping, Dory1.0-4B caches keys and values only from the last loop, keeping its KV-cache footprint equal to that of a non-looped model at any loop count while retaining most of the accuracy gains. We open-source the BF16, MXFP8, NVFP4, and GGUF quantized checkpoints.

CVE-Conditioned Exploit Generation with LLMs: A Data-Centric Study of Benchmarking and Fine-Tuning

Yiwei Chen, Lichi Li, Kai Cheung, Vinny Parla, Ganesh Sundaram

原文摘要

We study the task of CVE-conditioned exploit generation, where a model drafts proof-of-concept (PoC) exploits given software vulnerability context. We adopt a data-centric approach, constructing a high-quality dataset via multi-stage preprocessing and introducing a scalable evaluation framework with LLM-as-judge and fine-grained rubrics. Under this unified setup, we benchmark 17 large language models across 8 evaluation criteria, providing systematic insights into their zero-shot capabilities. We further show that a compact 8B open-weight model, when fine-tuned on curated data, achieves over 42.5% improvement in exploit quality and rivals some proprietary models when combined with simple test-time rejection strategies. Our results highlight the importance of data quality, structured supervision, and evaluation design for reliable exploit generation, suggesting that these factors can be as critical as model scale in adapting LLMs to cybersecurity tasks.

Measure Before You Repair: An Explainable Agent for Blind Restoration of Multi-Artifact 3-D MRI

Necati Sefercioglu, Mehmet Ozan Unal, Metin Ertas, Altan Cakir, Isa Yildirim

原文摘要

A brain MRI scan can carry an unknown mix of artifacts, so restoration has to be blind, yet most deep-learning methods are built to correct one known artifact. We present Dx-Rx, an agent in which a multimodal large language model (MLLM) measures suspected artifacts before it repairs them. To our knowledge, it is the first agent to restore whole 3-D MRI volumes, whereas earlier MRI agents restore 2-D slices. In a loop, it looks at slices of the 3-D volume, calls five diagnostic tools (noise, spike, ghosting, bias field, motion) and four restoration tools in any order it chooses, checks each repair, can return to any earlier version to change the order, and ends with a radiology-style report of its diagnostic reasons, the repairs it applied and their results. We simulated up to five artifacts on 148 whole 3-D T1-weighted volumes, at levels calibrated to radiologists' grades of real scans. An MLLM that only looked at the image, as earlier MRI agents do, removed at most 19.7 % of the artifact error. With the best of five MLLMs, Dx-Rx removed a mean 64.5 %, nearly matching the 64.6 % of the same tools given the ground-truth artifacts, which are never known for a clinical scan. With all five models, it made no volume worse and was on par with or better than an expert rule-based pipeline built from the same tools (62.3 %). Code and demo are public at https://itu-biai.github.io/measure-before-you-repair.

Identity-Consistent Analysis of Long-Shot Windsurfing Video: A Domain-Specific Offline Tracking System

Bertil Braun, Felix Muehlenberend

原文摘要

Long-shot windsurfing video combines small targets, large camera pans, prolonged overlaps, and rapidly changing backgrounds. The desired output is not a generic MOT trace but a separate, stable rider-relative video for each surfer; one false identity merge can invalidate an otherwise useful result. We present an offline analysis system that detects surfers, forms conservative local tracklets, links them globally with camera-compensated motion and a foreground-masked sail-color descriptor, and uses two pose keypoints on the rig to drive a rider-relative virtual camera. The tracking stage is evaluated on 21 manually reconstructed development videos containing 41,004 retained observations. On this fixed-observation protocol, the production system achieves 0.957 pairwise precision, 0.918 recall, and 0.937 F1, compared with 0.792 F1 for OC-SORT and 0.828 for BoT-SORT. Compared with OC-SORT, it reduces fragmentation excess from 845 to 42, but nine of its 95 output tracks mix rider identities and these errors affect seven of the 21 videos.

When Music Needs Meaning: Semantic Communication as a Transformative Enabler for the Musical Metaverse

Ali Al Housseini, Jaime Llorca, Cristina Rottondi, Luca Turchet, Tiziano Leidi, Omran Ayoub

原文摘要

The Musical Metaverse (MM) enables geographically distributed musicians, audiences, sound engineers, and AI agents to interact through synchronized audio, visual, kinematic, and haptic streams, imposing latency, synchronization, bandwidth, and scalability requirements that are difficult to satisfy with conventional bit-level communication. This paper argues that semantic communication, understood here as the transmission of musically meaningful information rather than raw audio-visual-haptic samples, provides a principled communication paradigm for the MM. We define the MM from a communication perspective and derive modality-specific require ments; propose a three-pillar framework for musical semantic communication comprising semantics extraction, semantic-aware orchestration, and cross-modal semantic synchronization; survey representative work across semantic communication, music AI and edge orchestration, identifying the gaps that prevent their integration; and propose a semantic-first reference architecture based on device-side semantic encoders, edge semantic routers, and cross-modal semantic synchronization. The resulting framework positions the MM as a concrete and demanding use case for 6G semantic communication.

原文摘要

Designing and authoring high-performance custom kernels for accelerators is a complex task that requires deep hardware-level expertise. Large Language Models (LLM) can be leveraged together with real-time compiler feedback to build agentic systems for kernel generation. In this work, we present MaxKernel, a multi-agent system that implements three distinct paradigms for TPU kernel development: (1) a Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) agent for collaborative, step-by-step design; (2) an Autonomous (Auto) agent that executes a fully automated, metric/trace-driven optimization loop; and (3) a Graph-Based Autonomous Search that scales the Auto agent for global exploration of the design space. All three paradigms leverage a shared pool of specialized sub-agents to handle planning, implementation, self-debugging, testing, and hardware profiling. We evaluate MaxKernel on JaxBench, a comprehensive suite of 50 diverse kernel tasks for TPUs, alongside complex, real-world workloads from state-of-the-art open-source models. We demonstrate that MaxKernel consistently generates highly optimized implementations, matching expert hand-tuned baselines and delivering significant performance across the benchmark. Our agent is open-sourced and available https://github.com/AI-Hypercomputer/accelerator-agents/tree/main/MaxKernel.

Whose startup does the AI back? An algorithm audit of reputation and demographic signals in LLM-assisted crowdfunding

Mirza Samad Ahmed Baig, Syeda Anshrah Gillani

原文摘要

Large language model (LLM) assistants increasingly advise backers on which crowdfunding campaigns to support. LLMs have known race and gender problems, and it is unsettled whether they reproduce, erase, or reverse the discrimination documented in entrepreneurial finance. We ask when, and through which decision process, LLM assistants use founders' gender and ethnicity. In a pre-specified choice-based conjoint experiment, seven LLMs chose among five synthetic campaigns with independently randomized quality signals and founder names, under three backer personas and a persona-free control (40,248 responses). By default, founder names barely matter: under budget-conscious and delivery-focused personas, gender and Black-name effects are statistically equivalent to zero. When the backer wants to support underrepresented creators, the models favor Black-signaled (+8.1 percentage points; positive in all seven models) and female-signaled (+5.1) founders. They do so most strongly among near-tied campaigns and for the founder who alone carries the signal, and they almost never name gender or ethnicity in their reasons. The results fit an agency account of algorithmic discrimination: an aligned assistant takes its demographic preferences from its user rather than from its training data.

FlagRot: Selective Rotation for Low-Bit KV Caches

Kunming Shao, Xijie Huang, Jierun Chen, Jiaqi Shao, Yanli Wang, Jiangnan Yu, Qiwei Li, Wei Zhang 等 10 位作者

原文摘要

Long-context inference is bound by the KV cache, which 2-bit codes could shrink about sixfold if their error stays in check. The usual remedy rotates keys before quantizing, assuming rotation always helps. However, we observe that it does not: rotation flattens a spiky piece of a key but can give a flat one a new peak, and both coexist within one key. We therefore propose FlagRot, which stores each 32-channel piece rotated or as is, whichever has the smaller calibrated attention error, and rotates the query instead when reading. We further show that how often to decide follows the quantization axis: per-channel caches such as KIVI need one decision per head, at no write cost, while per-token caches decide per key, with the choice stored in existing sign bits. At 2.5 bits per value, FlagRot lowers the twelve-model KL divergence of KIVI from 18.7 to 12.4 x 10^-3, below RotateKV on 9 of 12 models. Served as a vLLM plugin, it raises RULER at 128k tokens by +2.9 points and the LongBench v1 mean by +0.4 to +1.9 points on the three of four models where 2-bit KIVI loses accuracy. It also lowers the error of 4-bit integer and FP4 caches.

Closing the Lab-to-Store Gap: A Data-Efficient Post-Training and Experience-Driven Learning VLA Framework for Retail Humanoids

Roger Sala Sisó, Tiago Silvério, Jakob Sand, Tran Nguyen Le

原文摘要

Closing the gap between benchmark performance and reliable real-world operation remains a central challenge for Vision-Language-Action (VLA) humanoid robots, which must handle execution errors, distribution shifts, and environmental variability. This paper presents DEED (Data-Efficient Post-Training and Experience-Driven Learning), a systems-level approach evaluated on a supermarket chip-restocking task using a Unitree G1-Edu humanoid robot and the GR00T N1.6 foundation model. DEED comprises three key components: (1) a data-efficient post-training pipeline with control-frequency alignment, data curation, task-relevant visual highlighting, and reduced VLA dependence; (2) a real-world study of experience-driven refinement, adapted from RECAP via a text-based advantage prefix and a vision-language value function; and (3) a latent-space analysis tool for studying in- and out-of-distribution behavior. Our results suggest that bridging the lab-to-store gap is primarily a systems integration challenge rather than an architectural one: careful data design and targeted post-training can transform a policy that fails under naive fine-tuning into a competent real-world system using only a single GPU.

An explicit solution of the five-expert prediction PDE and the exact optimality set of COMB

Jeff Calder, Nadejda Drenska

原文摘要

In this paper, we derive an explicit solution of the stationary prediction with expert advice PDE for five experts. The formula is given in three regions. In the first two regions, it is the four-expert solution plus a single integral with an elementary positive density. In the third region, it is a finite sum of hyperbolic products whose coefficients are determined by one scalar quadrature. Our formula establishes that the rank ordered adversary $(1,0,1,0,0)$ achieves the Hamiltonian maximum in the PDE everywhere in the ordered sector, while the COMB strategy $(1,0,1,0,1)$ is optimal only on a lower dimensional subset of the sector (where $x_1=x_2$ and $x_3=x_4$). The verification of the Hamiltonian inequalities is a tedious task, part of which is completed with a computer assisted proof. The verification reduces to 21 scalar inequalities, which we prove using 147 exact rational Bernstein polynomial certificates. The exact certificates and their independent arithmetic checks are included in a supplement to this paper, and a Lean 4 formalization machine-checks the verification and both main theorems, apart from the viscosity characterization.

Towards Trustworthy Physical Intelligence: From Theory to Practice Across Life Cycle

Yang Wang, Hongxuan Liu, Xinghui Xu, Arjun Menon, Xiaoran Cai, Yunyu He, Alex Tarvo, Jingzong Zhou 等 43 位作者

原文摘要

Physical intelligence refers to intelligence systems that understand, reason about and act in accordance with the physical world and its underlying laws, dynamics, and constraints. Unlike conventional AI systems, physical intelligence interacts continuously with uncertain physical environments, and its actions produce consequences that are physically irreversible. As existing trustworthy AI frameworks have been developed primarily for digital AI systems, they do not fully capture the distinctive challenges of Physical Intelligence, such as physical safety, cyber-physical security, and physical manufacturing process. To address this gap, our paper develop a foundation for understanding, operationalizing, and governing trustworthy physical intelligence. First, we characterize the fundamental capabilities of physical intelligence. Second, we investigate the role of physical laws and principles in AI and analyze the associated challenges of physical intelligence. Third, we provide a unified structure of the end-to-end physical intelligence life cycle across five core stages and introduce the Trustworthy Physical Intelligence Operationalization (T-PAIO) framework. Fourth, we formulate the Trustworthy Physical Intelligence (T-PAI) Principles as a theoretical framework that synthesizes key trustworthiness dimensions and establishes a conceptual foundation for the governance of physical intelligence systems.

Thinking Fast, Trading Late: System One Decision Models vs the Market

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) read company news at scale, and backtests suggest that their readings predict stock returns. We ask how much of that predictability survives a test that rules out look-ahead, memorization and selection. We propose OLIVIA, a protocol for such tests: point-in-time inputs with company identities masked, selection on validation data only, an analysis plan frozen by cryptographic hash, and a test period unblinded once through a logged lock. We apply it to AI decision models, non-generative language models that return probabilities for typed questions, reading news about S&P 500 stocks: an open-weights model we fine-tuned on 2024-2025 data, three commercial models and standard baselines. The fine-tuned model's signal replicated on two validation quarters (daily information coefficients 0.055 and 0.065) but fell to 0.020 (t = 1.7) on the blinded January-July 2026 test. The commercial models' readings line up with the overnight move to the open (information coefficient 0.074 to 0.077) but not with the move after it, so the news is priced by the time a trader can act on it at the open. No model can tell over- from under-reaction, and no pre-registered strategy survives costs and a deflated Sharpe ratio. Commercial models identify masked companies in 62% to 74% of cases against a 28% baseline: masking hides names, not companies. The market reads the news first.

原文摘要

Translating population-level exercise guidance into individualized prescriptions requires integrating clinical and wearable data, including diagnoses, medications, functional limitations, and baseline activity, with condition-specific recommendations, a process difficult to scale beyond specialist rehabilitation settings. We developed FITTER, a multi-agent framework that integrates these data with condition-specific guidance to generate personalized FITT-VP prescriptions and applies deterministic safety audit and repair to correct rule-checkable violations. We evaluated FITTER using data from 400 All of Us participants (300 cancer, 100 stroke) against five LLM comparators through computational evaluation, ablation, and structured clinician review. FITTER achieved 98.5% safety-constraint compliance versus 75.8-85.8% for comparators and showed greater quantitative dosing precision and guideline alignment. Cancer-cohort ablation identified safety audit and repair as the largest contributor to safety-constraint compliance. Clinicians reviewed 80 prescriptions across safety, personalization, instruction concreteness, anticipated effectiveness, and clinical acceptability. FITTER provides a clinician-facing approach integrating clinical and wearable data, guidance, and explicit safety constraints.

SLATE: A Large-Scale Benchmark for Long-Horizon API Selection in E-commerce Tool Use

Rongzhe Wei, Ge Shi, Min Cheng, Sarthak Ghosh, Vaibhav Gorde, Leman Akoglu, Pan Li, Na Zhang

原文摘要

Enterprises increasingly want LLM agents to automate standard operating procedures over their software stacks -- mapping each step of a procedure to the right call among thousands of internal APIs, without hand-authored step-to-API mappings. The core difficulty is API selection at scale: choosing and composing the correct tools over a long horizon, judged only by whether the overall task succeeds. Current tool-use benchmarks do not test this regime -- they expose only a handful of tools, evaluate single-step invocation, or grade multi-step behavior with subjective LLM-as-a-judge scores that penalize valid alternative trajectories. We introduce SLATE (Synthetic Large-scale API Toolkit for E-commerce), a large-scale benchmark that tests large-toolset, long-horizon API selection in a realistic enterprise domain. SLATE couples (i) queries decomposed into hierarchical, tool-grounded procedures over a ~1,000-tool e-commerce library, (ii) a deterministic, context-aware simulator that returns recorded outputs for matching calls and default responses otherwise, and (iii) an end-to-end task-success metric -- a task succeeds when it reaches every reference outcome -- that credits diverse-but-valid trajectories while remaining fully automatic and reproducible. Experiments with six open decision models and the language models they are built on, from 3B to 12B parameters, show that even the best model completes only 5.0% of the tasks, establishing SLATE as a challenging testbed for reliable enterprise tool use. We release SLATE, its simulator, and the evaluation harness at https://geshijoker.github.io/slate/

Rapid Mean-Field Formation Transport with a Shared-Representation Neural Fokker-Planck Controller

Zejian Zhou, Hao Xu

原文摘要

This paper develops a mean-field formation transport method with low online computational cost for large-scale multi-agent systems. Classical mean-field planners often require repeated solutions of coupled forward and backward partial differential equations, making online replanning computationally demanding. Density and control are therefore approximated by a common parameterized nonlinear map with separate scalar density and vector control outputs. Parameters are optimized using Fokker--Planck and initial-condition residuals, formation-matching costs on numerically simulated closed-loop particle trajectories, and control effort. Numerical computations are restricted to a bounded region of the state space, with an additional penalty on probability flux across its boundary. For the periodic-domain model, we establish well-posedness of the induced density evolution and bound the density-approximation error in terms of the dynamics and initial-condition residuals. Parameter optimization precedes online operation, during which controller coefficients remain fixed. Experiments quantify the accuracy--runtime trade-off relative to a mean-field planner, show lower transport error than classical feedback baselines, and demonstrate the benefits of the common parameterization.

Measuring Model-Specific Alignment Drift in LLM-Based Opinion Dynamics

Nataša Djurdjevac Conrad, Sebastian Pokutta, Christof Schütte

原文摘要

Large language model (LLM) agents are increasingly used as synthetic participants in opinion-dynamics experiments, often assuming that an agent's behaviour is fully determined by its prompt. We test this assumption with a framework in which LLM agents discuss a contested policy issue over repeated rounds while their stance is quantified by a fixed psychometric instrument independent of any dynamics model. Across six LLMs, committed personas are intrinsically stable: in each of the five models tested without peer input, every agent keeps its assigned side for 20 rounds. The observed loss of alignment under discussion is therefore interaction-induced, we call it alignment drift, and model-specific: gpt-4.1 keeps opinion clusters apart, claude-sonnet-5 holds them partially, and gpt-5.6-sol and claude-opus-5 abandon them. Under selective attention, one LLM maintains separated opinion clusters under stance-homophilous attention. Qualitative profiles persist at doubled population and horizon and on a second issue. Such heterogeneity makes the LLM choice a first-class validity variable for social simulation.

On the optimality of truncation among binary linear sketches

Robinson D. H. Cung, Adway Girish, Emre Telatar

原文摘要

We study statistical inference and function evaluation problems in which the input binary vector is available only through a binary linear sketch, i.e., a fixed number of parity measurements. We show that under a certain monotonicity condition, simply truncating the input by retaining a subset of its coordinates is optimal among all linear sketches of the same size. In particular, this applies to distributed testing of correlations of binary vectors when they are of opposite signs and evaluating unate Boolean functions on uniformly random inputs. Additionally, given that truncation is optimal, we immediately have lower bounds for arbitrary binary linear sketches. To illustrate this application, we consider the one-way communication complexity of a distributional graph connectivity problem on $n$ vertices and show that truncation, and hence all binary linear sketches, requires $Θ(n \log n)$ bits to achieve constant error, while a nonlinear protocol only requires $O(\log n)$ bits.

Deterministic Causal Quantization with Bounded Error: Adaptive Reconstruction and Entropy bounds

Rama Cont, Massoud Heidari

原文摘要

We study compression of real-valued stationary sources under a deterministic error bound: every sample must be reconstructed within a prescribed tolerance $\varepsilon$ on every input sequence. Reconstructions are causal, depending only on present and past inputs. Rates are measured by the entropy of the quantizer output, which block entropy coding can approach, and compared with the minimum rate of unrestricted block quantization under the same error constraint. A uniform scalar quantizer with cells of width $2\varepsilon$ is within one bit per sample of this minimum whenever finite-entropy scalar quantization is possible, without density, independence, or mixing assumptions. Under entropy and Sobolev regularity conditions, the gap is at most $2\mathcal{J}\varepsilon^2/(π^2\ln 2)$, where $\mathcal{J}$ is the asymptotic Fisher information per sample. Thus the cost of causal reconstruction vanishes at a quadratic rate as the tolerance decreases. A uniform grid, however, cannot adapt to the source. We construct an adaptive quantizer whose encoder and decoder maintain a common finite set of reconstruction values, updated from the transmitted symbols alone; suitable initialization reproduces any uniform grid. When its initial values are at least $\varepsilon$ apart, its rate is within two bits per sample of the minimum for every such source. For sources uniform within separated intervals of width $2\varepsilon$, storing the interval centers attains the minimum and its Shannon lower bound. Such configurations can outperform every uniform grid of the same cell width: over sources with well-separated intervals, the best uniform grid's worst-case excess rate is $1/(2\ln 2)\approx 0.72$ bit per sample.

Contingency-Aware Planning via Certified Neural Hamilton-Jacobi Reachability

Kasidit Muenprasitivej, Derya Aksaray

原文摘要

Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) reachability provides formal safety guarantees for dynamical systems, but repeatedly solving the HJ partial differential equation in changing environments limits its use in real-time planning. This paper introduces learning-based reachability and an online safety certification that together enable real-time contingency-aware planning in unknown environments with probabilistic safety guarantees. We use Fourier Neural Operator (FNO) to approximate the HJ solution operator under varying obstacle configurations. To certify the learned reach-avoid set, we recast robust scenario optimization as multiple hypothesis testings over its sublevel sets, which yields a simultaneous guarantee across candidate levels and recovers the largest certifiable volume at the prescribed safety level. Within this certified set, the induced recovery policy is guaranteed to return the system to a safe region in finite time under any admissible disturbance. Numerical results show that the learning and certification pipeline updates reach-avoid sets at real-time rates and is demonstrated on youBot simulation.

From Senses to Decisions: The Information Flow of Auditory and Visual Perception in Multimodal LLMs

Wish Suharitdamrong, Muhammad Awais, Xiatian Zhu, Sara Atito

原文摘要

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) can listen and see, but how do audio and visual signals actually travel through the network to shape an answer? Despite their growing role in research and real-world applications, the internal pathways through which audio and visual tokens influence the final prediction remain poorly understood. In this study, we examine audio-visual information flow inside Audio-Visual Large Language Models (AVLLMs), tracing how AVLLMs route, utilize, and integrate audio and visual information across two input configurations, audio-visual video and multiple interleaved audio-visual items. We find that for audio-visual video, AVLLMs follow the sequential information flow pathway established for VLMs and VideoLLMs, with audio and visual contribution flowing along this pathway in proportion to the task's reliance on each modality. In settings with multiple interleaved audio-visual items, this routing shifts to different parallel streams. Furthermore, we demonstrate that audio-visual and other token types can be discarded once their information is transferred to LLM, with minimal impact on the model's prediction or even slight improvement, generalizing across multiple tasks and datasets, enabling more efficient inference. These findings hold across multiple models and scales, Qwen2.5-Omni and Video-SALMONN2 Plus at 3B and 7B scales, leading to hypotheses on why these flow structures emerge. Together, these results deliver the first coherent picture of how AVLLMs orchestrate sound and sight inside the network and lay the groundwork for the next wave of interpretability, design, and efficiency advances in audio-visual and broader MLLMs.

Must AI Spell It Out? Pragmatic Comprehension of Alerts in a Time-Critical Task

Anwesha Das, Vera Demberg, Anna Maria Feit

原文摘要

Assistive systems typically tell users everything, often spending time and attention on what a user already knows, leaving less for what happens next. People, on the other hand, leave out what they expect the listener can supply. Can people use their prior knowledge to understand an incomplete message when the speaker is a machine though? We studied this pragmatic comprehension in a monitoring task controlling users' prior knowledge and the available time to detect critical situations. In a preregistered study (N=114), we compared a pragmatic planner that reasons over a model of the listener's knowledge to decide what to say, when, and how explicitly, with a baseline specifying problems fully in onset order. Participants resolved underspecified alerts almost as reliably as fully specified ones and sooner, detected more problems, and rated the pragmatic assistant helpful more often, with no increase in reported mental demand. Our findings show that people can recover what the system left implicit and that pragmatic communication can support effective assistance under the constraints of a changing world.

Self-governed access control in open robot swarms using a blockchain-based DAO

原文摘要

Robot swarms harness simple, local interactions among many individually limited robots to produce complex, coordinated collective behavior, making them valuable across domains from agriculture to disaster response. We envision the next frontier for such swarms as open swarms, in which robots join or leave the swarm dynamically at runtime. The ability to dynamically adjust swarm size has been shown to be beneficial, for instance by reducing inconsistencies and network partitioning, especially under sparse connectivity or in complex environments, ultimately improving task performance. For practical deployment, however, open swarms requires governance, particularly protection against Byzantine behavior (i.e., faulty or malicious robots), since allowing robots to join freely also makes the swarm easier to infiltrate. Blockchain technology has recently been incorporated into robot swarms, offering secure, decentralized coordination and improved resilience, though largely in closed settings with a fixed, predetermined membership. In this work, we extend these benefits to open swarms by introducing robot swarms governed by a blockchain-based decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), in which the swarm regulates itself using autonomous rules encoded in smart contracts. We outline several DAO-based governance mechanisms for robot swarms, depending on the needs of the application, and present a proof-of-concept implementation of a simple DAO that regulates swarm membership and prevents Byzantine infiltration. Our simulation results and real-robot validations show that DAO-governed access control and robot removal can maintain proper swarm functioning while keeping the number of Byzantine robots within acceptable limits.

Gather or Act? Belief-Level Counterfactual Labels for Deadline-Aware Incident Response in Cyber-Physical Systems

Ali Mohammadi Ruzbahani

原文摘要

When an industrial control system misbehaves, the defender often must choose between acting now on the most likely cause and first gathering evidence that separates two look-alike causes, while the process drifts toward a shutdown. Learning or evaluating such decisions requires the cost of every candidate action from the same situation, which no public cyber-physical security dataset provides. We present TE-GvA, a counterfactual decision dataset for fault-driven incident response on the revised Tennessee Eastman process, with 9,908 decision points from 1,990 simulated incidents, each with 4 to 35 candidate actions labelled by branched rollouts with common random numbers. Labels computed under the true hidden cause (hindsight labels) make gathering the best choice in only 1.1-1.3% of decisions. For the dominant look-alike pair, a failed network link versus a frozen I/O module, we add pair-conditioned belief labels from twin episodes that replay the defender's history under the other cause, weighted by the exact posterior. With them, gathering is best in 15.5% of ambiguous natural decisions and in 33.1% of ambiguous stress decisions without a backup channel. When the posterior is correct and the twin is faithful, belief labels have the same regression target as hindsight labels and lower variance. In a pre-specified, single-look test evaluation, a gradient-boosted rule trained on belief labels has 11% lower regret on the stress set than the same rule trained on hindsight labels, and 27% lower regret on ambiguous stress decisions without a backup channel, which remains significant after Holm correction. With a backup channel and in the natural distribution, the two label sets perform about the same. Soft labels tolerate moderate posterior errors, whereas hard labels that commit to one cause do worse than hindsight labels.

One Mistake, Three Layers: Persistence Rules Under Depth Correlation

Maryam Rahimimovassagh, Michael Brown, Sanjeda Sara Jennifer, Niloofar Yousefi

原文摘要

Probing frozen representations layer by layer is now standard practice, but reporting when a signal first becomes decodable requires a rule for reading a depth curve, and the obvious rule is wrong. On synthetic curves with known ground truth, requiring a probe score to exceed a null-calibrated threshold for three consecutive stages reports an onset nineteen stages early under transformer-like depth correlation, with every resample returning an onset. The failure follows from correlation between neighboring layers, a hazard known in neuroimaging but not, to our knowledge, checked for depth curves. We give an estimator whose error rate is calibrated rather than assumed. Null trajectories are built by permuting labels within each evaluation unit and holding each permutation fixed across depth, preserving the correlation structure the rule must survive; thresholds are per-layer order statistics; and the persistence requirement is calibrated rather than chosen. Applied to pocket information in a frozen co-folding trunk, stratifying 1,820 post-cutoff targets by protein-family and pocket familiarity, the five-stage rule fires on 4 to 7 per cent of null trajectories against a nominal 5 per cent and the three-stage rule on 12 to 17: the synthetic failure reproduces on real data. Pocket membership is decodable above threshold at all 48 blocks in all four regimes, so the onset cannot discriminate them; the pre-declared accumulation depth does, and is latest for familiar families with structurally novel pockets in every feature set. That regime is also the weakest, by a margin surviving controls for length, pocket measure and alignment depth. Separately, a widely used public co-folding checkpoint loads against its own code with 128 trunk parameters missing; those would be randomly initialized, and every representation extracted would be partly noise while appearing normal.

Novelty Reviewer: A Large-Scale Dataset and Model for Reviewer-Aligned Novelty Assessment

Abeer Mostafa, Thi Huyen Nguyen, Zahra Ahmadi

原文摘要

Assessing novelty in AI research is arguably the most consequential yet least reliable step in peer review. Reviewer judgments of novelty remain inconsistent and dependent on comparisons to prior work that are often incomplete. We release a large-scale Novelty Reviewer Dataset built from 102,021 official reviews of 37,899 ICLR and NeurIPS submissions (2022-2025). For each submission, it provides the reviewers' novelty statements, a paper-level novelty assessment, and a novelty score on a four-point scale. On top of this dataset, we build Novelty Reviewer, a literature-aware framework that learns how reviewers judge novelty and grounds these judgments in semantic comparisons to existing research. We fine-tune a large language model on the dataset to capture reviewer-aligned novelty evaluation behavior. Given a manuscript, the framework extracts structured representations of its ideas, methods, and claims; retrieves semantically related papers; and constructs a knowledge graph that enables concept-level comparison to prior work. Based on the retrieved evidence, the model produces calibrated novelty scores alongside human-like explanatory assessments, reducing overestimation and improving consistency relative to existing approaches. Furthermore, we analyze different LLMs' abilities to assess originality and detect potential conceptual plagiarism. We publicly release the dataset, the model, and the code with documentation to support research on automated novelty assessment and peer review.

Stacking-Based Weighting for Large Language Bayes in M-Open Settings

Anant Bhide, Akarsh Gupta, Edmond Cunningham, Justin Domke

原文摘要

Large Language Bayes (LLB) transforms a natural language problem description into a collection of candidate probabilistic programs and performs inference within each model, combining their predictions using Bayesian model averaging. While this provides a flexible framework for probabilistic inference without manual model specification, the resulting candidate model set is often misspecified in practice, and likelihood-based aggregation can concentrate on a single model, under-representing uncertainty across the sampled models. We propose a stacking-based aggregation method for LLB that selects model weights by optimizing predictive performance rather than marginal likelihood, while preserving the original language-model-driven model generation and within-model inference pipeline. Because leave-one-out predictive quantities are intractable in latent-variable models, we derive a variational lower bound that yields a tractable ELBO-based stacking objective. Across real-world probabilistic inference tasks, our method achieves comparable predictive performance to Bayesian model averaging while yielding more dispersed model weights, reducing concentration on a single candidate model under misspecification.

The Information Bottleneck and the Privacy Funnel are NP-hard

Roberto Bruno, Ugo Vaccaro

原文摘要

Given a joint distribution $P_{XY}$ of random variables $X,Y$ on finite alphabets, the information bottleneck method seeks a representation $T$ of $X$ that is as informative as possible about $Y$ while compressing $X$; the privacy funnel asks for a representation that discloses much about $X$ while leaking little about $Y$. In both scenarios $T$ and $Y$ are conditionally independent given $X$. We show that computing the optimal value $\operatorname{IB}(P_{XY},R) = \sup_T \{ I(Y;T) : I(X;T) \le R \}$ of the information bottleneck problem, as well as its Lagrangian relaxation $L_β(P_{XY}) = \sup_T [ I(Y;T) - βI(X;T) ]$, is NP-hard. Moreover, unless $\mathrm{P} = \mathrm{NP}$, neither $\operatorname{IB}(P_{XY},R)$ nor $L_β(P_{XY})$ can be approximated in polynomial time within an additive error of order $|\mathcal{X}|^{-(1+α)}$, for every fixed $α> 0$. We also prove that computing the privacy funnel $\operatorname{PF}(P_{XY},r) = \inf_T \{ I(Y;T) : I(X;T) \ge r \}$ and its Lagrangian relaxation $Λ_β(P_{XY}) = \inf_T [ I(Y;T) - βI(X;T) ]$ is NP-hard, and that, unless $\mathrm{P} = \mathrm{NP}$, neither can be approximated in polynomial time within an additive error of order $|\mathcal{X}|^{-2}$.

Ermakov--Based embeddings as a parameter-free layer for physics-informed neural networks

Roberto Bernal-Jaquez, Roberto Romero Huerta, Alexander Schaum

原文摘要

Evolution equations with time-dependent coefficients force a neural solver to spend capacity on a scale that the equation already determines. We show that a single classical object, the Ermakov-Pinney scale function $ρ$, can be written into the input layer of a physics-informed neural network as a parameter-free embedding. One construction covers three problem families through the two signs of the Pinney constant $c$: linear diffusion ($c=-1$, $ω\equiv0$), diffusion in a time-dependent confining trap ($c=-1$, $ω\neq0$), and the quantum oscillator with time-dependent frequency ($c=+1$). An exact moment identity gives $ρ$ in closed form from the initial data alone, so no auxiliary network or knowledge of the solution is needed. Our central finding is comparative: each family requires a different component of the construction and has a different honest control. In family I, the diffusive-time reparametrisation alone reproduces most of the gain, so that family is a poor test of the idea and shows why an ablation is mandatory. In family II no time reparametrisation exists, the control degrades accuracy, and the amplitude prefactor becomes essential (40.8x). In family III the adiabatic approximation also fails, and the quadratic phase factor is what matters (5.7x). The method does not help when the reduced solution does not converge to a fixed point: its extrapolation advantage then disappears. The reduction itself is the classical scaling-variable change of the self-similar-asymptotics literature; what is new is the moment identity that makes it architectural for time-dependent coefficients, and the comparative anatomy above.

ProteoCraft: Protein Design as Proposal-Verification Search

原文摘要

Protein-protein interactions underpin nearly all biological processes. Yet, designing proteins with desired interactions remains challenging due to the structural complexity governing molecular recognition. This study views protein design as a search optimization problem over a combinatorial sequence space under expensive structural evaluation. Toward this goal, we introduce a novel tree-based search framework, ProteoCraft, that employs approximate structural gradients from diffusion-based structure predictors as effective proposal policies to specify where the search should explore. Complete no-gradient inference of folding models separately assigns values to the resulting sequences, determining what is good. ProteoCraft allocates this verification budget through a coarse-to-fine paradigm: multi-site edits first explore distinct sequence basins, then verified promising states undergo strict single-site refinement. Across fourteen de novo binder-design settings spanning eight target proteins, five immune-relevant TCR-facing targets, and four localized CDR redesign tasks, ProteoCraft improves design quality and high-confidence yield. These improvements persist under independent AF2-IG and Rosetta-based interface evaluation. Prospective experimental validation further yielded an 82.9% binding hit rate for PD-L1 miniproteins, with a best measured KD of 0.879 nM, and confirmed binding of designed IFNAR2 VHH. Our code is available at https://github.com/smiles724/ProteoCraft_v1.
