SHq: Learnable Grids for LLM Weight Quantization

Michael Helcig, Earl Killian, Dan Alistarh

原文摘要

Block-scaled lookup-table (LUT) formats, which represent weights as indices into a small value set (the grid), have become standard for low-bit LLM quantization, ranging from NF4 and BOF4 to the 3-bit LUT instruction in NVIDIA Rubin. While these formats leave the grid definition flexible, existing implementations rely on fixed grids derived either from numerical data types (INT, FP) or assumed weight distributions (NF, BOF). We demonstrate that no single fixed grid is universally optimal; the best fixed grid varies with bit-width: BOFS at 2 bits, NF at 4 and 5 bits, and INT at 6 bits. We introduce SHq, a closed-form family of grids parameterized by two critical degrees of freedom: a companding strength α that interpolates level spacing from uniform to floating-point-like, and an offset c that introduces asymmetry. This offset allows the sign bit of the FP8 block scale, otherwise unused, to select between the grid and its mirror image, up to doubling the number of distinct values available per block. SHq modifies only the lookup table contents and serves as a drop-in replacement for the grid in any such format. Across five models ranging from 3B to 35B parameters, including a mixture-of-experts architecture, evaluated at 2-6 bits using RTN and GPTQ, SHq achieves the lowest KL divergence in every setting at 3 and 4 bits and in most settings at 2, 5 and 6 bits. It outperforms the best fixed grid by up to 34% and remains superior under mixed-precision configurations. At 4.5 bits per weight, the SHq format reduces the KL divergence of NVFP4 by 41-67% while improving downstream accuracy. Grid families incorporating both spacing and offset parameters perform comparably, whereas those lacking an offset exhibit clearly higher error, confirming that these two degrees of freedom drive the observed gains. We therefore propose SHq as the standard grid for block-scaled lookup-table formats.

Not Another Text Benchmark: Putting the "Visual" Back in Visual Question Answering for Large Video Models

原文摘要

Large video models have exhibited impressive performance on a wide range of visual question answering tasks, owing to the rise of powerful, pretrained text and vision encoders. The usefulness of such models have also been demonstrated on a wide range of benchmarks, with an important caveat - the dominant approach in these benchmarks evaluates multiple choice reasoning via text options. This is a natural way to test text-based reasoning in these models, and has led to significant insights regarding model behavior in the community. In this work, we ask a different question - what happens when the evaluation modality is visual, rather than text? We introduce three new vision-centric evaluation benchmarks in temporal frame retrieval, video future prediction, and causal memory distortion, all designed around evaluating visual understanding capabilities in large video models. Our approach complements the existing approaches to evaluate video understanding in frontier models. We show that current frontier models exhibit significant weakness when attempting to reason through visual queries, rather than text. We conclude with an extended analysis section that provides pointers for future improvements in visual understanding for large video models.

One Image Is Enough: Self-Generated Supervision for Personalizing Human Video Diffusion at Test Time

Sadman Rakib Pinon, Adamo Orsini, Yanis Falaki, Linlian Jiang, Jacob Kingi, Yang Wang, Xinxin Zuo

原文摘要

Pose-driven human video diffusion animates a person from a single reference image and a target pose sequence, yet it struggles to preserve identity, rendering the face and garments unfaithfully as the pose departs from it. Personalization is the standard remedy, but its supervision is missing: one image fixes identity at a single pose, while a multi-pose subject video cannot be assumed in practice. Instead, we synthesize the missing supervision. A domain-tuned, pose-conditioned generator produces pseudo-ground-truth frames at selected key poses. An inference-time reference-only sampler steers these candidates toward the subject and keeps the most identity-consistent. A per-subject low-rank adapter then trains on static clips of them, configured from the reference alone, with no subject video, ground truth, or labels. Although lower in fidelity, these synthetic frames supervise more effectively than real ones. Real frames as captured carry motion that erodes the temporal prior, while a static clip conveys appearance alone. On TikTok and UBC Fashion, the adapted model improves the base on every metric, inverts the identity-versus-motion trade-off, and matches or surpasses adaptation on five real frames despite using none. Code and weights are available at https://github.com/SadmanPinon/one-image-is-enough.

Full-Rank Constructions of Explicit Lossless Expanders and Good Small-Set qLTCs

Yali Aharon-Holzman, Michael Ilan, Assaf Reiner, Amnon Ta-Shma

原文摘要

We construct explicit two-sided lossless expanders whose binary adjacency matrices have full rank, and use them to obtain explicit asymptotically good quantum LDPC codes whose specified X- and Z-check matrices have full row rank and satisfy small-set soundness, or confinement, on a linear range. Our lossless expanders are a variant of those of Hsieh, Lubotzky, Mohanty, Reiner, and Zhang, with a free action of a finite 2-group. Under such an action, injectivity and surjectivity of the adjacency matrix are detected on a fixed-size matrix indexed by vertex orbits. Adding a sparse factor to the gadget at the middle vertices of a single type then enforces full rank, with a controlled loss in expansion. To obtain the 2-group action, we observe that reducing the generators of the Lubotzky-Phillips-Sarnak Ramanujan graphs modulo powers of 2, instead of modulo an odd prime, gives Ramanujan Cayley graphs on finite 2-groups. This construction may be of independent interest. Plugging two such expanders into the balanced product of Lin and Hsieh gives the quantum codes, since full rank of the input graphs is inherited by the check matrices. Our construction supplies the code family sought by Hong, Guo, and Lucas. Applying their analysis, within their framework and under their dynamical assumptions, gives quantum memories whose free-energy density is analytic at every positive temperature and whose guaranteed lifetime is $exp(Ω(N))$ at sufficiently low fixed positive temperature, where N is the blocklength. This improves the previously guaranteed stretched-exponential timescale.

Three classes of few-weight self-orthogonal projective codes and their applications for LCD codes

Yue Huang, Zhonghao Liang, Chenlu Jia, Yongkang Wan, Qunying Liao

原文摘要

Since self-orthogonal codes, few-weight codes and linear complementary dual codes(LCD codes, for short) have nice applications in coding theory and cryptography, they have received continuous attention. In 2024, by introducing the notion of the augment code, Heng et al.[16] constructed several classes of few-weight self-orthogonal codes basing on defining sets, which are introduced by Ding et al.[7] in 2007. In this manuscript, for two classes of defining sets, we consider the corresponding augmented codes, construct three classes of four-weight self-orthogonal projective codes and determine the parameters of their dual codes. And then, we construct three classes of LCD codes. In particular, we prove that there exists a class of these LCD codes whose dual codes are almost optimal LCD codes according to the sphere packing bound.

EAvatar: Expression-Aware Head Avatar Reconstruction with Generative Geometry Priors

Shikun Zhang, Cunjian Chen, Yiqun Wang, Yong Li

原文摘要

High-fidelity head avatar reconstruction plays a crucial role in AR/VR, gaming, and multimedia content creation. Recent advances in 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) have demonstrated effectiveness in modeling complex geometry with real-time rendering capability and are now widely used in high-fidelity head avatar reconstruction tasks. However, existing 3DGS-based methods still face significant challenges in capturing fine-grained facial expressions and preserving local texture continuity, especially in highly deformable regions. To mitigate these limitations, we propose a novel 3DGS-based framework termed EAvatar for head reconstruction that is both expression-aware and deformation-aware. Our method introduces a sparse expression control mechanism, where a small number of key Gaussians are used to influence the deformation of their neighboring Gaussians, enabling accurate modeling of local deformations and fine-scale texture transitions. Furthermore, we leverage high-quality 3D priors from pretrained generative models to provide a more reliable facial geometry, offering structural guidance that improves convergence stability and shape accuracy during training. Experimental results demonstrate that our method produces more accurate and visually coherent head reconstructions with improved expression controllability and detail fidelity.

Static Factorisation of Probabilistic Programs With User-Labelled Sample Statements and While Loops

Markus Böck, Jürgen Cito

原文摘要

It is commonly known that any Bayesian network can be implemented as a probabilistic program, but the reverse direction is not so clear. In this work, we address the open question to what extent a probabilistic program with user-labelled sample statements and while loops - features found in languages like Gen, Turing, and Pyro - can be represented graphically. To this end, we extend existing operational semantics to support these language features. By translating a program to its control-flow graph, we define a sound static analysis that approximates the dependency structure of the random variables in the program. As a result, we obtain a static factorisation of the implicitly defined program density, which is equivalent to the known Bayesian network factorisation for programs without loops and constant labels, but constitutes a novel graphical representation for programs that define an unbounded number of random variables via loops or dynamic labels. We further develop a sound program slicing technique to leverage this structure to statically enable three well-known optimisations for the considered program class: we reduce the variance of gradient estimates in variational inference and we speed up both single-site Metropolis Hastings and sequential Monte Carlo. These optimisations are proven correct and empirically shown to match or outperform existing techniques.

ASTRA: ADMM-Accelerated Topology Reconfiguration for Dynamic Satellite Constellations

João Norberto, Ricardo Ferreira, Cláudia Soares

原文摘要

Dynamic topology reconfiguration is central to the reliability and efficiency of large satellite constellations, yet many existing approaches rely on idealized assumptions such as full constellation deployment or uniform orbital spacing. We present Adaptive Satellite Topology via Regret-Aware learning (ASTRA), a theoretically grounded framework for dynamic satellite topology reconfiguration that builds on an online learning formulation and makes it computationally practical. ASTRA combines an ADMM-based offline solver with efficient online updates for both online gradient descent and online conditional gradient, yielding markedly cheaper constrained updates than generic optimization pipelines. On the theory side, we show that for a relevant class of entry-wise nonzero utility matrices, the objective is strongly convex, which yields logarithmic static regret for online gradient descent, and we further instantiate known dynamic-regret guarantees under inexact ADMM inner loops. Empirically, ASTRA matches or improves topology quality, presenting a good trade-off with computational time on synthetic constellations, and it remains effective on real Starlink data under partial deployment and non-uniform spacing, where idealized structural assumptions break down. These results position ASTRA as an efficient and theoretically grounded approach to topology reconfiguration in realistic Low Earth Orbit networks.

Specification-Aware Predictive Uncertainty Decomposition

原文摘要

Classical decompositions of predictive uncertainty, such as the information-theoretic one, are defined for a fixed representation $x$ of the input object. They do not consider that $x$ may be incomplete, nor do they measure how much the missing information can affect the prediction. In Large Language Models, users can clarify an underspecified input without any retraining. The clarified input can describe the user's unobserved intent $z^*$ more accurately and change the predictive uncertainty about the outcome. In this paper, we formalize this setting probabilistically and derive a three-term decomposition of prediction risk into specification, residual aleatoric, and epistemic uncertainties. We show that at the original information level, when only $x$ is available, the aleatoric uncertainty, represented by a Bayes risk, has two components. The first, which we call specification uncertainty, is the expected reduction in this Bayes risk from revealing the intent. The second is the residual aleatoric uncertainty, i.e., the Bayes risk that remains once the intent is known, averaged over its possible values $z$ given $x$. The distinction is important, as specification uncertainty informs the decision to request clarification before making a prediction. We build approximations of these components and connect them to existing uncertainty measures. Our experiments across different domains and modalities show distinct roles for the three components. Specification uncertainty is the most informative for detecting underspecified inputs, while residual aleatoric uncertainty is the most informative for detecting in-distribution prediction errors.

Generative diffusion in long-range correlated landscapes: Speciation cascade and the foam structure of the score

Jerome Garnier-Brun, Giulio Biroli, Marc Mézard, Jean-Philippe Bouchaud

原文摘要

While state of the art for image and video generation, the fundamental reasons for the effectiveness of generative diffusion remain unclear. In particular, the observed advantage of following an entire reverse process with respect to single-shot or autoregressive methods, and for what type of data it may hold, is not well understood. In this work, we aim to better understand the role of the reverse process by considering a complex yet analytically tractable data model, the Gibbs measure of a high-dimensional Gaussian random potential with long-range correlations. Focusing on the exact score, we show that the speciation threshold, in which a trajectory commits to one class of the data, becomes a speciation window, in which the reverse process progressively resolves the Parisi tree of pure states of the full replica-symmetry breaking measure, committing to ever finer branches down to a single pure state. Importantly, these commitments take place at noise levels where the noisy sample distinguishes the pure states only through an energy of order one, beyond the reach of standard replica saddle points. Constructing a Larkin argument suited to such $O(1)$ energy gaps, we describe the score as a foam, with slab-like cells separated by shock-like boundaries. In the variance-exploding process we consider, this window is followed by a shrinkage of the samples towards the data support, and finally by reconstruction within the selected pure state. The denoising error of the exact score follows these stages, dropping during the speciation window with a profile set by the Parisi function alone, and then within the selected state. We believe that the generative foam we describe, and in particular the boundaries between cells, could play an important role in determining where the errors of trained diffusion models redistribute the mass of the generated samples when the data are long-range correlated.

Counterfactual Route Optimization for Gaussian Head Avatar Modeling

Shikun Zhang, Yong Li, Yiqun Wang, Cunjian Chen

原文摘要

Head avatar modeling requires jointly optimizing multiple objectives with different dominant effects on geometry, appearance, and cross-view consistency. However, their relative effectiveness varies across training states, while existing pipelines typically rely on fixed loss weights or handcrafted stage-wise schedules. A central challenge is therefore to identify which optimization direction is more beneficial at each training state. We propose a counterfactual route optimization framework for Gaussian head avatar modeling, which characterizes state-dependent optimization preference from the realized effects of alternative updates rather than predefined heuristic weighting. Starting from the same training state, we perform short-horizon route-restricted lookahead over geometry, appearance, and joint update routes and evaluate their outcomes under a unified utility. The resulting counterfactual evidence is factorized into a geometry--appearance preference and a residual joint advantage, separately capturing the relative preference between individual update directions and the additional benefit of coordinated optimization. We further amortize this offline evidence into a lightweight controller that directly estimates the current optimization preference and applies bounded modulation to the training objectives during full avatar optimization. Experiments on the NeRSemble dataset validate the effectiveness of the proposed design, consistently outperforming existing methods while preserving clearer local facial structures and finer details.

Enhancing Knowledge Entity Relation Extraction in Abstracts and Full-text Content of Academic Articles Using Large Language Models

Yingyi Zhang, Chengzhi Zhang

原文摘要

This study investigates the effectiveness of large pre-trained language models (LLMs) for knowledge entity relation extraction (KERE) from academic papers. Existing studies have examined individual types of LLM-based strategies and evaluated model performance using metrics such as precision and recall. To provide a broader evaluation, this study investigates multiple strategies, including closed-source LLM-based CoT prompting, LoRA-adapted open-source LLMs, LLM-enhanced small pre-trained language models (SLMs), and SLM-enhanced closed-source LLMs. In addition, this study introduces two strategies, namely SLM-enhanced open-source LLMs and closed-source LLM-enhanced open-source LLMs. These strategies are evaluated from multiple perspectives, including metrics, their ability to mitigate errors observed in SLMs, and potential directions for model optimization. This study manually constructs two annotated datasets in the NLP domain, covering Abstract and Full-Text datasets. Experimental results show that the LoRA-adapted T5 model achieves the highest macro F1 scores of 0.7408 and 0.7013 on the Abstract and Full-Text datasets, respectively. SLMs also benefit from LLM-generated entity descriptions under the LLM-enhanced SLM strategy. Error analysis further reveals that the effectiveness of LLM-based strategies in mitigating SLM errors varies across error types. Based on the identified limitations and error patterns of these strategies, several optimization directions are proposed. In addition, combining strategies with different error patterns further improves KERE performance.

SwarmRSI: Recursive Self-Improvement through Evolving Scientific Agent Swarm

原文摘要

Recursive self-improvement (RSI) in scientific research aims to improve agents' research capabilities through their own experimental experience. Scientific agent swarms can combine evidence and implementations from different research directions to guide their agents' subsequent experiments. However, poor experimental results can leave unclear whether to revise a hypothesis or its implementation, while overall program scores can hide components useful to other agents. To address these challenges, we introduce SwarmRSI, a framework that evolves scientific agent swarms for recursive self-improvement. We devise Feedback-Guided Swarm Mutation to refine hypotheses and their implementations using experimental feedback from other agents. We also propose Complementary Swarm Recombination to reuse retained hypotheses and complementary program components across agents, allowing partial results to support new research. Recursive Swarm Evolution integrates both mechanisms into a feedback loop, using new experimental evidence to guide subsequent research. Experiments on OpenProblems, NatureBench and MLE-Bench Lite demonstrate SwarmRSI's state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance. Further evaluations show that accumulated research experience improves performance on held-out tasks. Biologists also reproduce its programs for follow-up biological analyses.

Honest Small Decision Models for Finance: Scale, Specialization Collapse, and Mixed-Corpus Remediation

Ajitabh Kumar

原文摘要

Financial workflows need fast, calibrated, auditable decisions, not just generated text. We train System-1 decision models, small language models fine-tuned to answer typed questions (choice/score/noul) with a probability in a single forward pass, across two model families (K2-Horizon and Qwen3.5/3.8) and nine rungs from 0.8B to 32B parameters, using one frozen LoRA recipe on a public decision benchmark and two new finance corpora: a programmatic-gold policy corpus (rule-reading with exact labels) and a reality-labeled outcome corpus (19,640 realized forward-return questions in walk-forward splits, plus a sealed 2026 test of 1,360 questions). Narrow fine-tuning costs general decision competence 9-45 percentage points, a data-mixture effect that shrinks with model scale and is associated with narrow-gradient volume. On reality-labeled questions, every trained rung from 0.8B to 32B lands at the horizon-conditioned prior baseline (accuracy 0.37-0.38, no detectable conditional edge under our controls); the models respond with flat, well-calibrated probabilities that track per-horizon base rates: naturally honest uncertainty, with a mid-scale calibration sweet spot (ECE 0.026 at 2B, degrading to 0.043-0.044 at 9-32B under prior drift). A mixed-corpus remediation carries all competencies in one adapter at modest cost: it matches or slightly exceeds the generalist specialist on the public benchmark while holding the policy ceiling and near-specialist outcome calibration, yielding a deployable artifact with per-domain temperature regimes and a band-dispatch escalation analysis: sharp, dispatchable bands where rules determine answers; flat, review-routing bands where reality does not.

Balancing Representations by Identifying and Generating Under-represented Data

Filipe Laitenberger, Hirokatsu Kataoka, Yuki Asano, Cees Snoek, Mohammadreza Salehi

原文摘要

Self-supervised learning inherits the coverage of its source data. When an unlabeled corpus is long-tailed, the representation becomes dense around frequent modes and thin where coverage is weak. Objectives for long-tailed SSL reweight the images already in the corpus and add no new ones. We introduce BRIDGE (Balancing Representations by Identifying and Generating Under-represented Data), a label-free feedback loop around the source set. The current encoder scores every source image by its mean kNN distance, and a budgeted acquisition rule selects images from a band of that score distribution where support is thin and the generator still produces faithful variants. A frozen image-to-image diffusion model then adds local variants of the selected anchors, and pretraining continues on the enlarged source set. We formulate acquisition as recoverability-weighted allocation of local support and derive when a finite budget should favor a sparse band that excludes the extreme tail and when reallocation after each repair is optimal under a fixed objective. Across five long-tailed, web-scraped and synthetic source regimes, BRIDGE has the highest seven-task linear-probe and kNN average of the compared methods, and paired experiments extend the gain to ViT-S under contrastive and self-distillation objectives, to low-label fine-tuning and to semantic segmentation. The linear-probe gain is smaller under masked reconstruction. Generated repair matches an oracle that restores the withheld real images, and under a frozen encoder the inserted images shrink the neighborhoods of the selected anchors about twice as much as those of matched unselected images. BRIDGE needs no labels and leaves the pretraining objective unchanged, so it can be added to pretraining on uncurated web data, where the encoder decides which images to generate.

Fresco++: Frequency-Guided and Canonical-Consistent Optimization for Fine-Grained Head Avatar Modeling

Shikun Zhang, Yong Li, Yiqun Wang, Cunjian Chen

原文摘要

We propose Fresco++, a unified optimization framework for fine-grained and view-consistent head avatar reconstruction. Head avatar optimization is typically driven by per-view image supervision, which can lead to premature fitting of unstable high-frequency details and inconsistent local appearance across viewpoints. Fresco++ addresses these challenges by regulating both the progression of visual detail and the formation of cross-view supervision during optimization. For frequency-aware optimization, a progressive curriculum first stabilizes low-frequency structures and then introduces high-frequency constraints to recover fine facial and hair details without amplifying spurious responses at early stages. For cross-view optimization, we introduce Canonical Group Consensus, which associates local observations through shared canonical surface regions and establishes correspondence across different viewpoints. Geometric and visibility-aware screening removes unreliable observations, while the remaining multi-view evidence is aggregated in feature space to form a consensus target for supervising the current rendering. This design enforces local consistency without relying on a specific image-space parameterization and avoids additional rendering of the auxiliary view. Together, the frequency curriculum and canonical consensus provide stable optimization from coarse structures to fine details while maintaining coherent appearance across viewpoints. Extensive experiments on NeRSemble demonstrate improved reconstruction quality and cross-view consistency, while evaluations across diverse avatar representations further confirm the generality and transferability of Fresco++.

Action Verification through Conjecture and Refutation for Language Model Agents

Minhyeon Oh, Chiyeong Heo, Geonwoo Noh, Hoyoung Kim, Jangwon Son, Jungseul Ok

原文摘要

Language model agents increasingly act on users' behalf by manipulating external environments through tools, often from high-level instructions that leave critical task- and environment-specific context unstated. To prevent resulting misaligned actions, recent work verifies proposed actions before execution, largely by establishing whether the conditions supporting them hold. We argue that this confirmation-oriented view leaves a fundamental blind spot: a wrong action often passes every check that asks whether it is right. This motivates a different question for verification: rather than asking what evidence supports an action, can the agent find evidence that refutes it? We pursue this direction with BlackSwan, a refutation-oriented, expect-suspect-test procedure that predicts the intended effect of each state-mutating action, formulates specific and empirically testable hypotheses for how it could be wrong, and tests them using existing observations or additional non-mutating actions, executing the action only if none survives testing. On challenging AppWorld tasks, BlackSwan improves success rate over the strongest baseline by 14.9 and 25.2%p with and without the backbone model's thinking mode, respectively. Even without thinking or in-context demonstrations, it outperforms stronger baselines equipped with them. The gains also transfer beyond AppWorld, with BlackSwan improving WebShop performance by 12.7%p. More broadly, our results suggest that language model agents have an underused capacity to recognize and self-correct misaligned actions, which can be systematically elicited through active conjecture and refutation before execution.

Specification-Guided Generation for Large Language Models

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) can generate structured outputs, but existing constrained-decoding methods mainly enforce syntax and cannot directly enforce satisfaction of a formal specification. We introduce a neuro-symbolic, specification-guided decoding framework that combines LLM generation with symbolic reasoning. At each step, the framework refines the decoding grammar by filtering out values that cannot be extended to an output satisfying the specification. We present a forward-only variant that guarantees specification satisfaction by construction, and a backtracking variant that revises earlier feasible choices when their downstream consequences leave only values that the LLM itself judges unsuitable. The framework is model-agnostic, requires no retraining, and builds on existing grammar-constrained decoding mechanisms. Experiments on configuration and constraint-solving benchmarks show that the forward-only variant reliably produces specification-compliant outputs while reducing repeated LLM inference compared with rejection sampling and incurring modest symbolic-reasoning overhead. The backtracking variant further reduces cases in which the model is forced to select values that it has itself judged unsuitable, thereby substantially improving adherence to the LLM's stated interpretation of the prompt.

Solver-Aware Decompositions for Programming-by-Example: When Dividing Requires Knowing How to Conquer

Janis Zenkner, Tobias Sesterhenn, Tim Grams, Christian Bartelt

原文摘要

Decomposition-based Programming-by-Example splits a task into subtasks: a decomposer predicts intermediate subgoals, and a learned synthesizer generates a program for each subgoal. Execution-decomposition approaches train the decomposer to imitate ground-truth (GT) subgoals and thereby treat decomposition quality as a property of the task alone. A learned synthesizer, however, has its own inductive biases, and GT subgoals reflect how the annotator factorized the task, not what this synthesizer can solve. A decomposer that imitates them can therefore propose subgoals that are logically valid but intractable for the synthesizer. Motivated by this observation, we propose Solver-Aware Decompositions (SAD), which keeps supervised training on GT subgoals as a structural scaffold and additionally trains the decomposer online with self-critical policy gradients against a frozen synthesizer. Each sampled subgoal is rewarded with the negative cross-entropy of the synthesizer on the target program, a continuous signal of how difficult the subtask is for this synthesizer. Our experiments show an accuracy paradox: with the synthesizer fixed, a GT-supervised decomposer agrees more often with the GT subgoals, yet its subgoals lead to lower synthesis accuracy, although the synthesizer was trained on the same GT data. On two list-processing domains, SAD improves synthesis and task accuracy over the GT-supervised decomposer, both in-distribution and under length generalization; the same holds under zero-shot transfer to an external benchmark and for a fine-tuned language model. Even an oracle that receives the GT subgoals at inference time, with the same synthesizer and search, fails on tasks that SAD solves, and fewer than 2% of SAD's solutions to these tasks match the GT program. Decomposition quality is therefore not a property of the task: it depends on the synthesizer that executes the subgoals.

Positive Safety Margins from Artificial Potential Field Reward Augmentation for Size-Robust Obstacle Avoidance under Partial Observability

Ziyi Hao

原文摘要

Collision-free reaching is central to manipulation, yet real cells often leave the size and exact position of an obstacle unobserved, which excludes reinforcement learning controllers that take obstacle geometry as input. A reward limited to a collision penalty does not depend on the clearance outside the obstacle, so under a step cost its learned policy skims the obstacle surface and fails once the obstacle radius exceeds its training value. We investigate whether a single analytic reward term can induce a safety margin without exposing the obstacle to the policy. We augment the reward of a simulated Franka Emika Panda reaching task with a horizontal artificial potential field that penalizes proximity within a safety margin around each of two pillars (fixed nominal layout, random drift). Under hidden observation, policies trained with this term maintain a safe success rate above 88% across a radius sweep from 0.03 m to 0.055 m (30 seeds), while policies without it fall below 10% at the maximum tested radius; the term induces a minimum clearance of 47.9 mm against 9.6 mm without it and eliminates training collisions at least eight times earlier (median steps). The advantage is statistically significant at all out-of-distribution radii and holds across three reinforcement learning solvers and under full observation. Its safe success rate is comparable to that of a classical potential-field planner given the pillar positions. The margin is a fixed buffer rather than an adaptation to the radius, and it lengthens the path by about 19%.

Exact Fusion of Softmax Attention Heads Can Require Exponentially Many Atoms

Hiroyasu Usami, Keisuke Hara, Ayato Tsuboi, Naohiko Matsuda

原文摘要

Fusing independently normalized attention heads can increase the number of explicit key-value entries, or atoms, needed to preserve their output. We prove a sharp separation for $W_d(q)=\sum_{j=1}^dσ(q_j)$: its $d$ two-atom heads use $2d$ head-atom terms, whereas its minimum single-head representation has exactly $2^d$ atoms, even with arbitrary fixed replacement keys, scalar values, and positive masses. The same lower bound holds for every fixed uniform error below $1/2$ on $\mathbb R^d$, and the threshold is sharp. The proof uses exposed-key normal cones; exact equality on any nonempty open query domain inherits the bound. The resulting atom bound for a fixed head count is tight when that count divides $d$. A normalized family retains its exponential exact minimum while approaching a constant on fixed-radius query balls. For pretrained-model caches, a classical affine-rank bound and a certified instance exclude exact vector preservation at a specified atom count. Learned-cache comparisons on two disjoint banks of 64 contexts show budget-dependent reversals and calibration effects.

原文摘要

Representation alignment (REPA) is widely used to accelerate the training of latent-space diffusion transformers (DiTs). However, applying it to pixel-space models such as Just Image Transformers (JiT) is challenging. Our analysis reveals a pronounced representation conflict between discriminative alignment and pixel-space generation. Compared with its latent counterpart, JiT learns representations that are substantially less aligned with DINOv2. Applying REPA to JiT consistently reduces the reconstructability of its intermediate representations, whereas this effect is not observed in Latent JiT. We attribute this conflict to JiT directly reconstructing pixels, which requires its representations to hierarchically encode discriminative semantics and reconstruction-relevant visual information across network depths. To address these challenges, we propose Routed Representation Alignment (RouteREPA), which uses lightweight, representation-dependent routers to adaptively route task-oriented representations for alignment and generation. We further apply routing across multiple network depths to accommodate their depth-dependent representation requirements. Extensive experiments on ImageNet-1K at 256x256 resolution show that RouteREPA consistently improves JiT across model scales and training budgets, outperforming standard REPA. On JiT-H/16, RouteREPA further surpasses PixelREPA using only one-third of its training epochs without classifier-free guidance.

PlagiaCorpus: A Bilingual, Adversarial, and Cross-Lingual Dataset for Forensic Plagiarism Detection

Adel Ammar, Serry Sibaee, Wadii Boulila

原文摘要

PlagiaCorpus is a bilingual Arabic-English dataset for benchmarking plagiarism and text-reuse detection, including reuse produced by large language models (LLMs) and reuse across languages. It contains 198,643 text records: a source corpus of 34,885 passages drawn from English and Arabic Wikipedia and two openly licensed book collections, and 163,758 queries (147,381 for training and 16,377 for testing). The queries cover five reuse classes of increasing difficulty, namely verbatim copying, character-level obfuscation, same-language paraphrasing by two different LLMs, and English--Arabic translation with structural paraphrasing, together with a Safe class of non-reused passages. Every positive query is linked to its source passage, and the train/test split is grouped by source passage so that no passage contributes queries to both splits. The release was curated through language identification, removal of LLM generation artefacts, and exact and cross-lingual de-duplication. Technical validation reports per-class length statistics, automatic checks of the train/test split, and inter-annotator agreement on a manually rated sample. The dataset is distributed in JSON and Parquet formats under a CC BY-SA 4.0 license.

The Web Doesn't Sit Still: Adversarial Self-Evolving Attacks on Search Agents

Geyuan Wang, Shunyu Liu, Siyuan Liang, Chenyang Lyu, Dacheng Tao

原文摘要

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown promise for empowering search agents to tackle complex information-seeking tasks. However, since acquiring external information necessitates web search, these agents are highly susceptible to various adversarial attacks (e.g., malicious information injection or stealthy context manipulation). Existing attack strategies inevitably rely on static and human-crafted templates, failing to emulate the dynamic and complex nature of real-world threats. In this paper, we propose an adversarial self-evolution framework that integrates bi-level optimization between the attacker's strategy evolution and the defender's adaptive mitigation, to expose the vulnerabilities of search agents. Specifically, we introduce the Contrastive Rollout Evolutionary Optimization (CREO) method to drive the directional evolution of the attack strategy population via contrastive evolutionary signals. To provide a stable environment for this continuous evolution, we further construct a controlled sandbox and design fine-grained metrics to quantify internal vulnerabilities. Extensive experiments across various multi-hop QA benchmarks and frontier LLMs demonstrate that the proposed framework yields attack efficacy superior to static baselines, underscoring the urgent need to develop more robust defense frameworks.

Leakage-Aware Encrypted Semantic Communication with Key-Conditioned Signal Perturbation

原文摘要

Encrypted semantic communication systems protect transmitted messages by inserting key-conditioned modules into a deep-learning semantic communication pipeline, but existing designs rely on a fixed adversarial weight and operate mainly at the semantic-feature level. We propose two changes to the encrypted semantic communication system (ESCS): a key-conditioned signal-domain perturbation layer, called learned adversarial perturbation injection (LAPI), and an information noise-contrastive estimation (InfoNCE)-guided adaptive training rule that {adds an adaptive leakage penalty alongside the fixed adversarial objective} using an InfoNCE-based proxy for mutual information leakage. Experiments on the Europarl corpus over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading channels show that InfoNCE-guided training is the primary source of eavesdropper suppression, reducing the eavesdropper's bilingual evaluation understudy (BLEU) score to approximately 0.07 at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Adding LAPI to the InfoNCE-guided objective further lowers the InfoNCE-estimated leakage by 5-9% with low measured inference overhead, while its impact on legitimate-receiver BLEU depends on channel conditions. The two mechanisms operate on different parts of the pipeline and can be jointly applied.

RESONATE: a Real Social Navigation Testbed for Autonomous Service Robots

Stefano Trepella, Andrea Ostuni, Mauro Martini, Irene Borgini, Marcello Chiaberge

原文摘要

Social navigation is essential for autonomous service robots operating in human environments, but progress remains constrained by the lack of extensive real-world benchmarks. This paper presents the Real Social Navigation Testbed (RESONATE), a reproducible benchmark for human-aware navigation based on a unified robotic platform, a shared ROS 2 software stack, precise trajectory ground truth, and structured social interaction scenarios. We evaluate eight controller configurations, combining classical and predictive local planners with different social modeling strategies, over eight representative scenarios with five repetitions each, yielding 320 physical experiments. The benchmark combines quantitative navigation and social metrics with participant-based qualitative assessments to jointly measure efficiency, safety, comfort, and perceived social behavior. Results reveal scenario-dependent trade-offs among the tested methods. The algorithms that stands out for their performance are the DWA with Gaussian social costmaps for its reliability, and the SFM-MPPI to provide the best balance between robustness, navigation efficiency, and social acceptance. Overall, RESONATE supports the robotics community with a real-world benchmark, reusable baselines, data, and testbed, and a consistent evaluation protocol for advancing socially aware navigation research.

Learning Steadily: Accumulating Relative Point Margin Scores for Face Image Quality Assessment

原文摘要

Face Image Quality Assessment determines the suitability of captured face images for automated face recognition (FR), a critical capability for reliable biometric systems. Existing state-of-the-art FR-integrated FIQA methods suffer from temporal instability: as the feature space evolves during training, single-epoch quality estimates fluctuate, creating a moving target that undermines reliable quality prediction. We introduce CARPM-FIQA, a stabilization strategy for FR-integrated FIQA that accumulates relative point margin measurements, the ratio between intra-class compactness and inter-class separation, across the entire training trajectory rather than relying on single-epoch estimates. This cumulative averaging approach provides theoretically grounded advantages: reduced variance in quality estimates, improved mean squared error, and enhanced ranking stability with convergence guarantees as training progresses. Through controlled experiments on the SynFIQA dataset with labeled quality groups, we demonstrate that cumulative averaging achieves superior discriminative ability, and ablation studies across different training configurations confirm consistent improvements. Evaluated against twelve FIQA methods on eight challenging benchmarks with four FR models at two FMR thresholds, CARPM-FIQA places 4th (CARPM-FIQA(L)) and 6th (CARPM-FIQA(S)) of 17 compared methods by pAUC-EDC and AUC-EDC averaged across FR models and, after per-benchmark normalization, across benchmarks, staying within a few percent of the best method's normalized average for every FR model, providing a principled solution to training instability while maintaining the performance benefits of FR integration. More broadly, our work demonstrates that temporal aggregation strategies can stabilize training objectives in deep learning systems where target values inherently fluctuate due to evolving feature representations.

ILR-SMO: Iterative Latent Refinement for Robust Spatial Multi-Omics Integration

原文摘要

Spatial multi-omics technologies jointly profile diverse molecular modalities with spatial context, providing a comprehensive view of cellular heterogeneity and tissue organization. To integrate spatial multi-omics data and identify spatial domains, a wide range of unsupervised methods has been proposed. However, recent approaches rely on single-step fusion, directly aggregating heterogeneous modalities into a shared representation, making embeddings sensitive to modality imbalance and measurement noise that are inherent to spatial multi-omics data, as well as unstable optimization under weak supervision. Here, we propose ILR-SMO (Iterative Latent Refinement for Spatial Multi-Omics), a unified self-supervised framework that reformulates multimodal integration as a stability-aware refinement process over a shared latent representation. Instead of single-step plain fusion, ILR-SMO progressively integrates modality-specific information through sequential updates, allowing information to be injected in a controlled manner. This incremental refinement enables later updates to correct or compensate for earlier deviations, resulting in more stable and robust representation learning under heterogeneous and noisy modalities. ILR-SMO further incorporates reliability-aware modality gating for adaptive modulation of modality contributions, and employs a joint objective to enforce spatial coherence while preventing representation collapse. Extensive experiments on five spatial multi-omics benchmarks demonstrate that ILR-SMO consistently outperforms seven state-of-the-art methods and exhibits strong robustness across diverse settings.

On the Indistinguishability of Human v/s AI Generated Text

Jaee Ponde, Aritra Das, Mihir More, Debayan Gupta

原文摘要

The rapid improvement of LLMs has made distinguishing AI-generated text from human writing a pressing problem. This challenge is further amplified by paraphrasing tools designed to make machine-generated text appear more ``human''. We study how access to human writing samples can be used to strategically paraphrase machine-generated responses toward the human distribution. Under a multi-sample setting with human and machine responses to the same prompts, we show that repeated paraphrasing moves the machine distribution toward a human target under mixing and stability conditions. We derive an explicit convergence rate, examine how semantic-preservation and quality constraints affect this rate, and extend the analysis to finite samples to characterize how the required human data and paraphrasing rounds scale with the desired error. We extend the analysis beyond the shared-parameter setting by learning a human-preserving rewriting kernel.

原文摘要

Novel imaging modalities promise improved diagnostics, but AI development is constrained by scarce training data. Inference-time domain transfer can address this by mapping novel modalities to established ones, enabling reuse of existing diagnostic models. However, this introduces hallucination risks, computational overhead, and regulatory complexity. Inspired by sim-to-real transfer, we propose training-time domain transfer, generating synthetic target-domain training data from archived routine samples to enable direct diagnosis on real inputs without inference-time generation. Using unstained prostate histopathology as a proof-of-concept, we compare this approach with inference-time virtual staining and conventional H&E-based cancer detection. Training-time transfer achieved higher concordance with the conventional benchmark than virtual staining for both raw (Cohen's $κ$=0.59 vs. 0.37; Gwet's AC1=0.73 vs. 0.29) and deparaffinized tissue ($κ$=0.66 vs. 0.61; AC1=0.73 vs. 0.64), supporting its potential for emerging diagnostic modalities.
