Stable Continuous-Time Consistency Distillation: An Empirical Study with a Multistep Extension

Vinay Saji Mathew, Soundar R. Kumara, Gretta D Kellogg, William KM Lai

Continuous-time consistency models are an attractive route to few-step generation. They remove the discretization error inherent to the timestep grid that discrete-time consistency models depend on. Until recently, however, training them was unstable. Lu & Song (2025) address this with the TrigFlow formulation and a coordinated set of architectural and training-objective changes. We conduct an independent empirical study of this framework on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet-64. No open-weight TrigFlow teachers exist at these scales, so we train them from scratch and then verify the consistency distillation (sCD) and consistency training (sCT) behavior of students initialized from these teachers. On CIFAR-10, our students reproduce the reported FID at one and two steps. On ImageNet-64, they fall short, a gap that appears related to our teacher and to architectural choices the paper leaves unspecified. We also report a parameter-count gap of about 5% between the model size stated in the paper and a faithful re-implementation, which we attribute to the scale-and-shift conditioning projections in Adaptive Double Normalization. We then propose Multistep sCD (MS-sCD), a continuous-time, segment-conditioned multistep generalization of sCD. The segment-conditioning idea is borrowed from the discrete-time multistep consistency distillation of Heek et al. (2024); we build on their preliminary continuous-time experiments within the TrigFlow/sCM framework. The rest of the algorithm follows sCD. MS-sCD replaces sCM's two-step intermediate time with a fixed segment-boundary schedule and recovers sCD at M = 1. We report FID at M = 2, 4, 8 and compare against the discrete-time MSCD baseline. Code, model weights, and training scripts are available on GitHub (Mathew et al., 2026).

Dream to Assist: Intent-Conditioned World Models for Shared Vehicle Control

Jonathan DeCastro, Thomas Balch, Emily Sumner, Deepak Gopinath, Laporsha Dees, Patricio Reyes Gomez, Elliot Weiss, Megan Applegate-Kenton 等 12 位作者

Assistive agents in shared-control settings face a dual challenge: acting proactively to align with the human's intentions while remaining legible enough for the human to comprehend and fluently respond in real time. We present Dream2Assist, a model-based reinforcement learning framework for tightly-coupled shared decision making that addresses both sides of this challenge. Our approach extends a recurrent state-space world model with intent inference, enabling an assistive policy trained via fictitious co-play to anticipate and support discrete human objectives without overriding human agency. Beyond the computational framework, we describe the full deployment pipeline needed to translate a world-model-based policy into a safe, human-centered system in a resource-efficient way. Crucially, we address the sim-to-real-human gap via policy down-selection and reward restructuring within an iterative human-machine interface design. We validate the framework through three human-subjects studies and a preliminary on-vehicle deployment spanning two qualitatively distinct domains: high-speed racing (N=30) and urban driving with richer intent structure (N=10). Our results demonstrate that intent conditioning yields measurable improvements in torque alignment and collision rate. We surface key design insights and practices for deploying learning-based assistive agents in safety-critical, real-time human-robot teaming.

Background The combination of hematoma location, expansion and final volume influence neurological outcome. The aim of this study was to derive and validate a quantitative and interpretable region-based NCCT image feature model for predicting hematoma expansion. Methods The Ethnic/Racial Variations of Intracerebral Hemorrhage(ERICH) study was used for derivation and the Virtual International Trials in Stroke Archive(VISTA) was used for validation. NCCT images at presentation and 24+/-6hours were pre-processed, segmented and categorized into lobar, basal ganglia or thalamic regions. Hematoma expansion was defined by region and according to its effect on clinical outcome. Transport-based morphometry (TBM) produced a unique transport-based representation from each NCCT hematoma image. Linear classifiers applied to transport representations were used to derive a predictive model. The regional TBM model's performance was compared to alternate methods using AUROC analyses. Results The derivation dataset included 574 patients, comprising 162 lobar, 257 basal ganglia and 155 thalamic hematomas. The validation dataset included 196 patients, comprising 31 lobar, 119 basal ganglia and 46 thalamic hematomas. A combined regional model predicted hematoma expansion in the validation dataset with an AUROC of 0.787. The principal image features which varied by location were size, heterogeneity, eccentricity and density distribution towards the hematoma periphery. The regional TBM model outperformed alternative clinician based and machine-learning methods. Conclusions TBM discriminated and visualized regional features of hematoma expansion from presentation NCCT scans. This provides preliminary evidence for regional radiographic features of hematoma expansion. It has the potential to improve hematoma expansion prediction and understanding of hematoma expansion pathophysiology.

Wave Is All You Need: A Quantum Language Model Based on Fully Connected Quantum Boltzmann Machine

Jun Liu

This work proposes a self-attention mechanism based on the fully connected quantum Boltzmann machine (FC-QBM), and further constructs a fully connected quantum Boltzmann machine language model (FC-QBM-LM) using the mechanism as the core engine. By performing unitary evolution on semantic quantum states, the mechanism implicitly implements positional encoding and self-attention computation, eliminating the need to decompose continuous semantic streams into discrete matrices for explicit matrix multiplication, with the measurement results naturally satisfying the normalization condition. Specifically, this work rigorously derives the computational principle of the self-attention mechanism based on FC-QBM, and demonstrates that this mechanism is mathematically equivalent to the classical self-attention mechanism. The mathematical principles governing the training and generation of FC-QBM-LM are thoroughly derived, and the two corresponding algorithms are subsequently developed. An 8-qubit FC-QBM-LM is finally constructed and trained on the corpus of Tang poetry. Under the 8-qubit setting, the quantum layer implements the entire positional encoding and self-attention computation pipeline with only 44 parameters. In the noiseless scenario, the model exhibits favorable convergence. Furthermore, the quantum circuit proposed in this work, which terminates with Y-axis rotation gates, achieves better convergence than the counterpart terminating with X-axis rotation gates. Under the small-sample regime and across eight distinct noise intensity levels, the model demonstrates strong noise robustness, retaining over 99% of its noiseless convergence performance. Experiments on five-character quatrain generation reveal that the model preliminarily exhibits three core capabilities: associative and divergent thinking, content generation across imagery and human-aligned word ordering.

On Detection Reliability for Small Object Segmentation

Olivier Rukundo

This study investigates whether predicted bounding boxes are reliable for determining where small-object segmentation should be performed without risking false negatives outside those boxes. The investigation leverages adenovirus particles as small objects, YOLO26x for detection, YO-LO26x-Sem for segmentation, and Mask R-CNN for both detection and segmentation. Segmenta-tion-model predictions were matched to ground-truth adenovirus masks or reference objects using their centroids, with ground-truth mask centroids preferred over ground-truth bounding-box centroids as references for matching. Matched predicted-mask centroids were considered as inside at least one detector-predicted bounding box or outside all such boxes, while ground-truth masks without matched predictions were recorded as having no matched segmentation. For the YOLO26 models, 34 reference objects (47.89%) had matched segmentation centroids inside at least one pre-dicted box, 8 (11.27%) had centroids outside all predicted boxes, and 29 (40.85%) had no matched predicted segmentation. For the Mask R-CNN model, the corresponding counts were 69 (97.18%), 0 (0.00%), and 2 (2.82%). These preliminary experiments demonstrated that restricting segmentation to detector-predicted bounding boxes risks excluding matched segmentation predictions outside those boxes, potentially introducing false negatives.

Prospective multi-pathogen disease forecasting using autonomous LLM-guided tree search

Sarah Martinson, Michael P. Brenner, Martyna Plomecka, Brian P. Williams, Nicholas G. Reich, Zahra Shamsi

Probabilistic forecasting of infectious diseases is crucial for public health monitoring and preparedness but has historically relied on labor-intensive manual model curation by expert modeling teams. Bespoke development is an obstacle to scaling models to granular geographic resolutions or emerging pathogens. Here, we prospectively evaluate Empirical Research Assistance (ERA), an autonomous system that uses Large Language Model-guided tree search to iteratively generate, evaluate, and optimize executable forecasting software. ERA was primarily prompted with methodological approaches to implement, while in some instances it was tasked with developing forecasting approaches from scratch. In a fully prospective, real-time evaluation during the 2025-26 United States respiratory season, ERA generated methodologically diverse models for influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Aggregating a selection of these automatically-generated models yielded an ensemble that ranked first overall in official Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) post-season evaluations and outperformed the gold-standard CDC forecast ensembles across all three pathogens in a real-time prediction challenge. Additionally, ERA successfully navigated data-scarce scenarios for RSV. Controlled retrospective ablations allowed for additional explorations of the impact of optimization target and instruction-following on forecast accuracy. Preliminary experiments indicate that ERA's search optimization metric influences behavior of output forecasts, and using higher-tier language models in-search improves predictive performance. By autonomously generating interpretable code that creates epidemiologically relevant predictions, this framework provides a path toward rapidly scaling high-quality disease forecasting.

Template-assisted Contrastive Learning of Task-oriented Dialogue Sentence Embeddings

Minsik Oh, Jiwei Li Stanford University, Guoyin Wang Alibaba Group

Learning high quality sentence embeddings from dialogues has drawn increasing attentions as it is essential to solve a variety of dialogue-oriented tasks with low annotation cost. Annotating and gathering utterance relationships in conversations are difficult, while token-level annotations, , entities, slots and templates, are much easier to obtain. Other sentence embedding methods are usually sentence-level self-supervised frameworks and cannot utilize token-level extra knowledge. We introduce Template-aware Dialogue Sentence Embedding (TaDSE), a novel augmentation method that utilizes template information to learn utterance embeddings via self-supervised contrastive learning framework. We further enhance the effect with a synthetically augmented dataset that diversifies utterance-template association, in which slot-filling is a preliminary step. We evaluate TaDSE performance on five downstream benchmark dialogue datasets. The experiment results show that TaDSE achieves significant improvements over previous SOTA methods for dialogue. We further introduce a novel analytic instrument of semantic compression test, for which we discover a correlation with uniformity and alignment. Our code is available at https://github.com/minsik-ai/Template-Contrastive-Embedding

MAB-DQA: Addressing Query Aspect Importance in Document Question Answering with Multi-Armed Bandits

Yixin Xiang Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Yunshan Ma Singapore Management University, Xiaoyu Du Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Yibing Chen Nanjing Pami Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., Yanxin Zhang NVIDIA, Jinhui Tang Nanjing Forestry University

Document Question Answering (DQA) involves generating answers from a document based on a user’s query, representing a key task in document understanding. This task requires interpreting visual layouts, which has prompted recent studies to adopt multimodal Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) that processes page images for answer generation. However, in multimodal RAG, visual DQA struggles to utilize a large number of images effectively, as the retrieval stage often retains only a few candidate pages (e.g., Top-4), causing informative but less visually salient content to be overlooked in favor of common yet low-information pages. To address this issue, we propose a Multi-Armed Bandit–based DQA framework (MAB-DQA) to explicitly model the varying importance of multiple implicit aspects in a query. Specifically, MAB-DQA decomposes a query into aspect-aware subqueries and retrieves an aspect-specific candidate set for each. It treats each subquery as an arm and uses preliminary reasoning results from a small number of representative pages as reward signals to estimate aspect utility. Guided by an exploration–exploitation policy, MAB-DQA dynamically reallocates retrieval budgets toward high-value aspects. With the most informative pages and their correlations, MAB-DQA generates the expected results. On four benchmarks, MAB-DQA shows an average improvement of 5%-18% over the state-of-the-art method, consistently enhancing document understanding. Codes are available at https://github.com/ElephantOH/MAB-DQA.

Safe-FedLLM: Delving into the Safety of Federated Large Language Models

Mingxiang Tao Hainan University, Yu Tian, Wenxuan Tu, Yue Yang Hainan University, Xue Yang Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xiangyan Tang Hainan University

Federated learning (FL) addresses privacy and data-silo issues in the training of large language models (LLMs). Most prior work focuses on improving the efficiency of federated learning for LLMs (FedLLM). However, security in open federated environments, particularly defenses against malicious clients, remains underexplored. To investigate the security of FedLLM, we conduct a preliminary study to analyze potential attack surfaces and defensive characteristics from the perspective of LoRA updates. We find two key properties of FedLLM: 1) LLMs are vulnerable to attacks from malicious clients in FL, and 2) LoRA updates exhibit distinct behavioral patterns that can be effectively distinguished by lightweight classifiers. Based on these properties, we propose Safe-FedLLM, a probe-based defense framework for FedLLM, which constructs defenses across three levels: Step-Level, Client-Level, and Shadow-Level. The core concept of Safe-FedLLM is to perform probe-based discrimination on each client’s local LoRA updates, treating them as high-dimensional behavioral features and using a lightweight classifier to determine whether they are malicious. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Safe-FedLLM effectively improves FedLLM’s robustness against malicious clients while maintaining competitive performance on benign data. Notably, our method effectively suppresses the impact of malicious data without significantly affecting training speed, and remains effective even under high malicious client ratios.

Trajectory Signatures of Deception in Large Language Models

Viraaji Mothukuri, Reza M. Parizi Kennesaw State University

Detecting deceptive behavior in LLMs is typically done post-hoc on outputs or by probing static activations. We instead treat deception as a dynamic process, a trajectory through the model’s hidden-state space during inference. We capture layerwise activations at sparse “decision points” where the model is uncertain between competing tokens, forming activation trajectories for matched truthful vs. deceptive responses across strategic deception, sycophancy, instructed deception, and confabulation. Across GPT-2 and Llama variants, deceptive generation is associated with changes in trajectory geometry, but increases in path length are model and deception-type-dependent. Sycophancy shows the clearest signal, whereas instructed deception yields near-null signatures. With just 7 geometric features, a lightweight classifier achieves performance comparable to PCA-reduced probing at matched dimensionality for binary sycophancy detection and shows preliminary utility for 4-way deception-type classification. These findings indicate that trajectory-based monitoring can provide process-level signals associated with deceptive generation during inference, complementing methods that focus on endpoint activation states.

Attn-GS: Attention-Guided Context Compression for Efficient Personalized LLMs

Shenglai Zeng Michigan State University, Tianqi Zheng Amazon, Chuan Tian Amazon, Dante Everaert Amazon, Yau-Shian Wang, Yupin Huang Amazon, Michael J. Morais, Rohit Patki Amazon 等 13 位作者

Personalizing large language models (LLMs) to individual users requires incorporating extensive interaction histories and profiles, but input token constraints make this impractical due to high inference latency and API costs. Existing approaches rely on heuristic methods such as selecting recent interactions or prompting summarization models to compress user profiles. However, these methods treat context as a monolithic whole and fail to consider how LLMs internally process and prioritize different profile components. We investigate whether LLMs’ attention patterns can effectively identify important personalization signals for intelligent context compression. Through preliminary studies on representative personalization tasks, we discover that (a) LLMs’ attention patterns naturally reveal important signals, and (b) fine-tuning enhances LLMs’ ability to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information. Based on these insights, we propose Attn-GS, an attention-guided context compression framework that leverages attention feedback from a marking model to mark important personalization sentences, then guides a compression model to generate task-relevant, high-quality compressed user contexts. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Attn-GS significantly outperforms various baselines across different tasks, token limits, and settings, achieving performance close to using full context while reducing token usage by 50 times.

Selective Contrastive Learning For Gloss Free Sign Language Translation

Chang Hao Lai, Rui Zhao Xiamen University, Xuewen Zhong Xiamen University, Jinsong Su Xiamen University, Yidong Chen Xiamen University

Sign language translation (SLT) converts continuous sign videos into spoken-language text, yet it remains challenging due to the intrinsic modality mismatch between visual signs and written text, particularly in gloss-free settings. Recent SLT systems increasingly adopt CLIP-like Vision-Language pretraining (VLP) for cross-modal alignment, but the random in-batch contrast provides few, batch-dependent negatives and may mislabel semantically similar (or even identical) pairs as negatives, introducing noisy and potentially inconsistent alignment supervision. In this work, we first conduct a preliminary trajectory-based analysis that tracks negative video-text similarity over training. The results show that only a small subset of negatives exhibits the desired behavior of being consistently pushed away, while the remaining negatives display heterogeneous and often non-decreasing similarity dynamics, suggesting that random in-batch negatives are frequently uninformative for effective alignment.Inspired by this, we propose Selective Contrastive Learning for SLT (SCL-SLT) with a Pair Selection (PS) strategy. PS scores candidate negatives using similarity dynamics from reference checkpoints and constructs mini-batches via a curriculum that progressively emphasizes more challenging negatives, thereby strengthening contrastive supervision while reducing the influence of noisy or semantically invalid negatives.

SLoRA: Balancing Plasticity and Forgetting in Large Language Models for Continual Learning

Lina Yang Shanghai Jiaotong University, Yusheng Liao Shanghai Jiaotong University, Yanfeng Wang Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Yu Wang Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Large language models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable success across diverse tasks through large-scale pretraining. However, they remain prone to catastrophic forgetting in continual learning. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to identify noise accumulation in LoRA updates as a key cause of forgetting in continual learning. A preliminary two-task experiment demonstrates that removing less important components of the second task’s LoRA parameters improves performance on the first task, suggesting that later updates introduce noisy interference. Building on this insight, we propose Subspace-Denoised Low-Rank Adaptation (SLoRA), a simple and effective framework that filters noisy components from LoRA updates via subspace similarity with the base model. SLoRA is a regularization-free method without accessing data or gradients from previous tasks or modifying the training process. It offers two variants, SLoRA-Pre and SLoRA-Post, for online and offline continual learning, respectively. Extensive experiments across tasks and models validate the effectiveness of SLoRA. It improves final accuracy by up to 12%, reduces forgetting by 29%, and filters out over 30% of LoRA parameters identified as noisy. Our code is available at https://github.com/alina1031/SLoRA.

Par-ITA: Benchmarking Seq2Seq and LLMs on a Human-Supervised Parallel Corpus for Italian Hyperpartisan Neutralization

Michele Joshua Maggini Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, Søren Fomsgaard, Michele Maestroni CityNews, Gaël Dias University of Caen Normandy, Pablo Gamallo Universidad de Santiago de Compostela

Neutralizing hyperpartisan content is essential for mitigating online polarization, yet research has largely focused on English. We present Par-ITA, a curated subset from Semeval 2023 task 3, consisting in the first human-supervised parallel corpus for Italian hyperpartisan neutralization of 2,475 paragraph pairs. The dataset is constructed using a rigorous three-stage pipeline: (1) expert-led preliminary selection of LLMs for high-quality generation, (2) human-supervised data production with high editing rates (32–68%), and (3) post-hoc human validation. We establish extensive benchmarks for this task across seq2seq and decoder-only architectures, evaluating standard fine-tuning, Direct Preference Optimization (DPO), and in-context learning. Our analysis highlights that while DPO effectively maximizes neutrality scores in seq2seq models, automated evaluators like GPT-4o-mini exhibit systematic biases, specifically over-penalizing sensitive political topics compared to human experts. Par-ITA provides a foundational resource for non-English neutralization and a reproducible framework for developing high-quality datasets in subjective domains.

MathFlow: Enhancing the Perceptual Flow of MLLMs for Visual Mathematical Problems

Shuhang Chen, Hangjie Yuan DAMO Academy, Alibaba Group, Yunqiu Xu National University of Singapore, Pengwei Liu, Tao Feng Tsinghua University, Tsinghua University, Jun Cen Alibaba Group, Zeying Huang Intelligent Learning Tech(Zhejiang), Yi Yang Zhejiang University

Despite strong results on many tasks, multimodal large language models (MLLMs) still underperform on visual mathematical problem solving, especially in reliably perceiving and interpreting diagrams. Inspired by human problem-solving, we hypothesize that the ability to extract meaningful information from diagrams is pivotal, as it directly conditions subsequent inference.Hence, we introduce FlowVerse, a comprehensive benchmark that provides a fine-grained evaluation of MLLMs’ perception and reasoning capabilities. Our preliminary results on FlowVerse reveal that existing MLLMs exhibit substantial limitations when extracting essential information and reasoned properties from diagrams and performing complex reasoning based on these visual inputs. In response, we introduce MathFlow, a modular problem-solving pipeline that decouples perception and inference into distinct stages, thereby optimizing each independently. Given the perceptual limitations observed in current MLLMs, we trained MathFlow-P-7B as a dedicated perception model.Experimental results indicate that MathFlow-P-7B yields substantial performance gains when integrated with various closed-source and open-source inference models. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the MathFlow pipeline and its compatibility with diverse inference frameworks. Project page: https://github.com/MathFlow-zju/MathFlow.

Language of Thought Shapes Output Diversity in Large Language Models

Shaoyang Xu Singapore University of Technology and Design, Wenxuan Zhang Singapore University of Technology and Design

Output diversity is crucial for Large Language Models as it underpins pluralism and creativity. In this work, we reveal that controlling the language used during model thinking—the language of thought—provides a novel and structural source of output diversity. Our preliminary study shows that different thinking languages occupy distinct regions in a model’s thinking space.Based on this observation, we study two repeated sampling strategies under multilingual thinking—Single-Language Sampling and Mixed-Language Sampling—and conduct diversity evaluation on outputs that are controlled to be in English, regardless of the thinking language used.Across extensive experiments, we demonstrate that switching the thinking language from English to non-English languages consistently increases output diversity, with a clear and consistent positive correlation such that languages farther from English in the thinking space yield larger gains. We further show that aggregating samples across multiple thinking languages yields additional improvements through compositional effects, and that scaling sampling with linguistic heterogeneity expands the model’s diversity ceiling. Finally, we show that these findings translate into practical benefits in pluralistic alignment scenarios, leading to broader coverage of cultural knowledge and value orientations in LLM outputs. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/iNLP-Lab/Multilingual-LoT-Diversity.

ICDAGENT: Empowering Agentic Large Language Models for Explainable Medical Coding

Ziyi Yin, Yuanpu Cao Pennsylvania State University, Ting Wang State University of New York at Stony Brook, Jinghui Chen Pennsylvania State University, Fenglong Ma Pennsylvania State University

The explainable medical coding task aims to automatically assign International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes to clinical notes while providing explicit justifications for each assignment. Recent approaches employ large language models (LLMs) to generate such explanations. However, their performance remains limited due to a lack of understanding of the clinical meanings of ICD codes. Additionally, the vast ICD code space further complicates the task of accurate prediction. To address these challenges, we propose the ICDAGENT framework, which consists of two collaborative LLM agents: a coding agent and a critical agent. The coding agent extracts ICD codes and generates preliminary rationales, while the critical agent performs fine-grained chain-of-thought reasoning to verify and refine them. Furthermore, the critical agent is trained with a rationale-aware reward, combined with reinforcement learning, enabling it to distinguish between correct and incorrect reasoning and ensure explanation accuracy. Experiments across multiple ICD coding standards and datasets demonstrate that ICDAGENT achieves effective ICD coding with accurate and trustworthy explanations.

Student Guides Teacher: Weak-to-Strong Inference via Spectral Orthogonal Exploration

Dayu Wang, Jiaye Yang Baidu, Weikang Li, Jiahui Liang Baidu, Yang Li, Deguo Xia, Jizhou Huang Baidu Inc.

Large Language Models (LLMs) often suffer from “Reasoning Collapse” on challenging mathematical reasoning tasks, where stochastic sampling produces lexical variations of the same erroneous logic rather than genuine semantic exploration. We observe that failed reasoning traces are often associated with a low-rank bias manifold in the model’s hidden-state geometry, which reduces exploration toward corrective solution directions. To address this, we propose Spectral Orthogonal Exploration (SOE), a geometric inference framework under a “Student Guides Teacher” paradigm. Instead of using a weak auxiliary agent for imitation, SOE uses it as an orthogonal probe to introduce semantically heterogeneous reasoning signals into the teacher’s orthogonal complement of its dominant subspace. This intervention steers the teacher toward more diverse reasoning trajectories and improves exploration beyond standard sampling. Experiments on mathematical benchmarks show that SOE improves average accuracy by 62.4% and average sampling efficiency by 113.7% over baseline methods, suggesting that geometric interventions can be effective for mitigating reasoning collapse in mathematical reasoning. We further provide preliminary evidence that SOE is also effective on logic and code generation benchmarks. Code is available at https://github.com/dayuwang401/spectral-orthogonal-exploration.

In this paper, we investigate knowledge forgetting in large language models with a focus on its generalisation—ensuring that models forget not only specific training samples but also related implicit knowledge. To this end, we begin by identifying a broader unlearning scope that includes both target data and logically associated samples, including rephrased, subject-replaced, relation-reversed, and one-hop reasoned data. We then conduct a rigorous evaluation of 15 state-of-the-art methods across three datasets, revealing that unlearned models still recall paraphrased answers and retain target facts in their intermediate layers. This motivates us to take a preliminary step toward more generalised implicit knowledge forgetting by proposing PERMU—a novel probability perturbation-based unlearning paradigm. PERMU simulates adversarial unlearning samples to eliminate fact-related tokens from the logit distribution, collectively reducing the probabilities of all answer-associated tokens. Experiments are conducted on a diverse range of datasets, including TOFU, Harry Potter, ZsRE, WMDP, and MUSE, using models ranging from 1.3B to 13B in scale. The results demonstrate that PERMU delivers up to a 50.40% improvement in unlearning vanilla target data while maintaining a 40.73% boost in forgetting implicit knowledge. Our code can be found in the supplementary material.

Neuro-Symbolic Agentic Reinforcement Learning for Long-Term Original Character Companionship and Interaction

Zhenhan Huang

As human-agent interaction (HAI) evolves toward long-term social companionship, users expect Original Character (OC) agents to maintain a consistent persona, manage shared memories, and adapt to ever-changing preferences. However, LLM-based agents optimized by prompting or SFT exhibit a generalization gap: they behave as myopic instruction followers, leading to cascading errors in multi-turn interactions. For the agents to learn trajectory-level value functions that enable farsighted decision-making, we propose the NSARL framework, which formalizes OC companion agents’ interactions as a POMDP and decomposes the agent into three sub-policies (Router, Memory, and Persona), optimized via closed-loop RL from AI feedback (RLAIF) with verifiable rewards in a graph-constrained action space. Our preliminary experiments indicate a trade-off: SFT yields stronger persona generation, while NSARL improves structural logic, through conservative strategies (e.g., over-routing) that increase workflow completeness, advocating for a hybrid deployment strategy.

Reviving Iterative Refinement in Diffusion-based NER with an Initializer-Restorer Approach

Long Hai Trieu, Phí Minh Hieu AIST, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Makoto Miwa Toyota Technological Institute and AIST, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology

Diffusion models have introduced a generative paradigm for Named Entity Recognition (NER), formulating the task as refining entityspans from noise. While promising, our analysis on the ACE2004 dataset reveals a limitation when training with Exponential MovingAverage (EMA): the model performance often peaks at a single inference step (γ = 1) and plateaus or degrades with additional steps. Thissuggests that under standard stable training configurations, the model may function primarily as a one-step generator rather thanleveraging the iterative refinement capability characteristic of diffusion models. To address this, we propose an Initializer-Restorerapproach. Instead of initializing the reverse process from random Gaussian noise, we utilize a preliminary set of candidate spansgenerated by a standard NER model (e.g., BERT or GLiNER). This allows the diffusion model to start from an informed, diverse prior, enabling effective iterative restoration. We investigate different training strategies for the restorer and find that a hybrid strategy mixingground truth and noisy predictions is essential. Experiments on ACE2004, GENIA, and CleanCoNLL show that our approach improvesperformance over the baseline, particularly when multiple restoration steps are employed. For instance, on CleanCoNLL, our methodachieves an F1 score of 94.70%, compared to 93.79% for the baseline. Our code is available at https://github.com/longtrieu-ai/Initializer-Restorer-NER.

Annotation Entropy Predicts Per-Example Learning Dynamics in LoRA Fine-Tuning

Brady Steele Georgia Institute of Technology and Apple

Annotator disagreement on tasks like natural language inference (NLI) reflects genuine linguistic ambiguity, yet most fine-tuning recipes treat every example as equally learnable. We ask whether this external signal of ambiguity predicts per-example learning dynamics under LoRA, the most widely used parameter-efficient fine-tuning method, and find that it does. Correlating annotation entropy (from ChaosNLI’s 100 labels per example) with per-example area under the loss curve (AULC) on SNLI and MNLI, the correlation is positive in all 25conditions tested (Spearman \rho {=} 0.06-0.43), with decoder-only models showing stronger correlations than encoders at matched LoRA rank. More strikingly, under LoRA contested examples exhibit un-learning: their gold-label loss increases during training, a pattern that is largely absent under full fine-tuning and IA^3 in the encoder setting where matched comparisons are available, and that we also observe under LoRA on two decoder-only models. The effect survives partial-correlation controls and replicates across seeds and datasets. A preliminary noise-injection experiment is consistent with these findings.

Think Less, Code Better: Probing When Chain-of-Thought Hurts and How to Route Around It

Rajarshi Ghoshal, Debadri Basak, Salma E. Abdelhalim, Pratibha K. Arora Georgia Institute of Technology

Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting is the dominant strategy for eliciting step-by-step reasoning in large language models, but its effect on code generation is poorly understood. We present a controlled 2×2 study of Qwen2.5-Coder-1.5B and DeepSeek-Coder-1.3B (each in base and instruction-tuned variants) on HumanEval, MBPP, and LiveCodeBench, plus scale-validation runs on Qwen2.5-Coder at 7B and 14B and a preliminary evaluation of CodeLlama-7B. We find that instruction tuning reverses CoT’s effect on small Qwen models: CoT improves the 1.5B base (+13.4pp, p<0.001) but significantly degrades the 1.5B instruct variant (-15.2pp, p<0.001). The reversal is sharply scale-bounded — it disappears at 7B (-0.6pp) and goes slightly positive at 14B (+2.4pp) — while CoT’s positive effect on base models grows monotonically with scale (+13.4 → +28.7 pp). DeepSeek-Coder-1.3B is insensitive regardless of regime. A direct token-count and truncation analysis shows the mechanism: at 1.5B, CoT inflates Qwen Instruct’s mean output length by 112 tokens and pushes 7.6× more generations into truncation, where Pass@1 is 0%; at 14B, the same prefix produces complete code well within budget. Layer-wise probing shows all four small models encode prompt type by Layer 1–4 (>90% accuracy) — universally, whether CoT helps or hurts — demonstrating that representation does not determine interpretation: the same internal signal drives divergent downstream behavior depending on training regime and capacity. Building on these mechanistic findings, we develop a probe-guided style router that, when trained per model on a labeled training split, selects among 12 prompt styles via a single 84 ms forward pass; it is statistically indistinguishable from the best fixed style in 7/8 settings and significantly outperforms CoT where CoT is most harmful (p=0.012, h=+0.40). Our results argue against applying CoT blindly to small instruct code models: its effect depends on architecture, training regime, and scale in ways that are mechanistically detectable from early-layer activations.

CAL-Log: Cost-Aware Active Learning with Logarithmic Cognitive Effort Modeling and Online Adaptation to Human Annotation Behavior

Vihanga Supasan Kariyakaranage, Banuka Athuraliya

Active learning (AL) reduces labeled data requirements in NLP, yet most methods optimize label efficiency while ignoring annotation cost. Standard uncertainty sampling assumes uniform effort, leading to suboptimal resource allocation when documents vary in length. Supasan and Athuraliya (2026) introduced CAL-Log, a cost-aware AL variant using logarithmic cost modeling C(x)=α+β log(1+L(x)), where C(x) is the predicted annotation time for document x and L(x) is its token length, grounded in information foraging theory (Pirolli and Card, 1999) and psycholinguistic studies of human skimming (Rayner, 1998). This paper presents CAL-Log in full, extending that preliminary framework with two new contributions: temperature-scaled calibrated entropy and online per-annotator cost adaptation, which together resolve the cold-start calibration bottleneck identified in the prior work. Experiments on ten text classification benchmarks demonstrate a 3.3× speedup over BADGE (Batch Active learning by Diverse Gradient Embeddings; Ash et al., 2020) and 3.9× over Entropy sampling to reach F1=0.80, with large effect sizes (Cohen’s d>0.8). A live annotation deployment with preliminary user evaluation (N=7) confirms that the online cost model produces reading-speed classifications consistent with annotator self-reports, and that a transparency interface successfully communicates the scoring rationale to non-expert users.

Thesis Proposal: Auditing and Mitigating Demographic Bias in Multi-Stage Retrieval Systems for Criminal Justice Applications

Archan Dutta

We propose a comprehensive research agenda to detect, measure, and mitigate racial bias in Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems deployed in criminal justice contexts. Our preliminary work demonstrates that racial descriptors systematically alter embedding similarity scores and retrieval rankings across six models, with bias being race-specific and models showing rank displacements of 1.82 to 7.44 positions, on average. This empirically indicates that even small shifts in similarity scores can displace relevant records outside top-10 results, leading to systematic under-retrieval of records involving certain demographic groups.Building on these findings, this thesis proposes four research questions: (1) developing and evaluating debiasing techniques including counterfactual data augmentation, adversarial training, and fairness-constrained fine-tuning; (2) validating synthetic findings on authentic law enforcement data through IRB-approved partnerships; (3) investigating intersectional bias patterns across race, gender, and age; and (4) we extend beyond embedding-level analysis to examine how bias propagates across modern multi-stage retrieval pipelines from embeddings to cross-encoders to LLMs. Expected contributions include empirical comparisons of debiasing methods, bias benchmarks for criminal justice NLP, deployment guidelines for fairness-aware retrieval systems, and the first comprehensive analysis of multi-stage bias propagation in retrieval pipelines.

AI 速览:首次从零预训练文本、图文、音文三模态掩码扩散模型,系统研究多模态缩放规律、模态混合比例、噪声调度与批大小效应,并提出基于SDE的重参数化以解耦物理批大小与逻辑批大小。

Discrete diffusion models have emerged as strong alternatives to autoregressive language models, with recent work initializing and fine-tuning a base unimodal model for bimodal generation. Diverging from previous approaches, we introduce the first tri-modal masked diffusion model pretrained from scratch on text, image-text, and audio-text data. We systematically analyze multimodal scaling laws, modality mixing ratios, noise schedules, and batch-size effects, and we provide optimized inference sampling defaults. Our batch-size analysis yields a novel stochastic differential equation (SDE)-based reparameterization that eliminates the need for tuning the optimal batch size as reported in recent work. This reparameterization decouples the physical batch size, often chosen based on compute constraints (GPU saturation, FLOP efficiency, wall-clock time), from the logical batch size, chosen to balance gradient variance during stochastic optimization. Finally, we pretrain a preliminary 3B-parameter tri-modal model on 6.4T tokens, demonstrating the capabilities of a unified design and achieving strong results in text generation, text-to-image tasks, and text-to-speech tasks. Our work represents the largest-scale systematic open study of multimodal discrete diffusion models conducted to date, providing insights into scaling behaviors across multiple modalities.

Magellan: Autonomous Discovery of Novel Compiler Optimization Heuristics with AlphaEvolve

Hongzheng Chen, Alexander Novikov, Ngân Vũ, Hanna Alam, Zhiru Zhang, Aiden Grossman, Mircea Trofin, Amir Yazdanbakhsh

Modern compilers rely on hand-crafted heuristics to guide optimization passes. These human-designed rules often struggle to adapt to the complexity of modern software and hardware and lead to high maintenance burden. To address this challenge, we present Magellan, an agentic framework that evolves the compiler pass itself by synthesizing executable C++ decision logic. Magellan couples an LLM coding agent with evolutionary search and autotuning in a closed loop of generation, evaluation on user-provided macro-benchmarks, and refinement, producing compact heuristics that integrate directly into existing compilers. Across several production optimization tasks, Magellan discovers policies that match or surpass expert baselines. In LLVM function inlining, Magellan synthesizes new heuristics that outperform decades of manual engineering for both binary-size reduction and end-to-end performance. In register allocation, it learns a concise priority rule for live-range processing that matches intricate human-designed policies on a large-scale workload. We also report preliminary results on XLA problems, demonstrating portability beyond LLVM with reduced engineering effort.

FeatureFool: Zero-Query Fooling of Video Models via Feature Map

Tang, Duoxun, Xiao, Xi, Hu, Guangwu, Sun, Kangkang, Yang, Xiao, Chen, Dongyang, Li, Qing, Yin, Yong-jie 等 9 位作者

The vulnerability of deep neural networks (DNNs) has been preliminarily verified. Existing black-box adversarial attacks usually require multi-round interaction with the model and consume numerous queries, which is impractical in the real-world and hard to scale to recently emerged Video-LLMs. Moreover, no attack in the video domain directly leverages feature maps to shift the clean-video feature space. We therefore propose FeatureFool, a stealthy, video-domain, zero-query black-box attack that utilizes information extracted from a DNN to alter the feature space of clean videos. Unlike query-based methods that rely on iterative interaction, FeatureFool performs a zero-query attack by directly exploiting DNN-extracted information. This efficient approach is unprecedented in the video domain. Experiments show that FeatureFool achieves an attack success rate above 70% against traditional video classifiers without any queries. Benefiting from the transferability of the feature map, it can also craft harmful content and bypass Video-LLM recognition. Additionally, adversarial videos generated by FeatureFool exhibit high quality in terms of SSIM, PSNR, and Temporal-Inconsistency, making the attack barely perceptible. This paper may contain violent or explicit content.

Beyond Geometry: Artistic Disparity Synthesis for Immersive 2D-to-3D

Chen, Ping, Chen, Zezhou, Zhang, Xingpeng, Qian, Yanlin, Hu, Huan, Liu, Xiang, Wang, Zipeng, Wang, Xin 等 11 位作者

Current 2D-to-3D conversion methods achieve geometric accuracy but are artistically deficient, failing to replicate the immersive and emotionally resonant experience of professional 3D cinema. This is because "geometric reconstruction" paradigms mistake deliberate artistic intent--such as strategic zero-plane shifts for "pop-out" effects and local depth sculpting--for data "noise" or ambiguity. This paper argues for a new paradigm: Artistic Disparity Synthesis, shifting the goal from physically accurate disparity estimation to artistically coherent disparity synthesis. We propose Art3D, a preliminary framework exploring this paradigm. Art3D uses a dual-path architecture to decouple global depth parameters (macro-intent) from local artistic effects (visual brushstrokes) and learns from professional 3D film data via indirect supervision. We also introduce a preliminary evaluation method to quantify cinematic alignment. Experiments show our approach demonstrates potential in replicating key local out-of-screen effects and aligning with the global depth styles of cinematic 3D content, laying the groundwork for a new class of artistically-driven conversion tools.

Image Diffusion Preview with Consistency Solver

Wang, Fu-Yun, Zhou, Hao, Yuan, Liangzhe, Woo, Sanghyun, Gong, Boqing, Han, Bohyung, Yang, Ming-Hsuan, Zhang, Han 等 11 位作者

The slow inference process of image diffusion models significantly degrades interactive user experiences. To address this, we introduce Diffusion Preview, a novel paradigm employing rapid, low-step sampling to generate preliminary outputs for user evaluation, deferring full-step refinement until the preview is deemed satisfactory. Existing acceleration methods, including training-free solvers and post-training distillation, struggle to deliver high-quality previews or ensure consistency between previews and final outputs. In this paper, we propose ConsistencySolver derived from general linear multistep methods, a lightweight, trainable high-order solver optimized via Reinforcement Learning, that enhances preview quality and consistency.Experimental results demonstrate that ConsistencySolver significantly improves generation quality in low-step scenarios, making it ideal for efficient preview-and-refine workflows. Notably, it achieves FID scores on-par with Multistep DPM-Solver using 47% fewer steps, while outperforming distillation baselines. Furthermore, user studies indicate our approach reduces overall user interaction time by nearly 50% while maintaining generation quality.
