In real-world clinical settings, dental X-ray segmentation using deep learning methods suffers from reliability issues. Even when the segmentation quality is bad, deep learning models show high confidence in their predictions (calibrational blindness). Moreover, in real use, doctors do not have ground-truth masks to check their accuracy. To address this problem, we introduce a simple quality-checking engine called HUS-QA with three stages. We train it on the PRAD (Periapical Dental X-ray) dataset to build our SimCLR self-supervised ResNet-18 U-Net model, which generates the segmentation mask and then evaluates its quality. Our HUS-QA checks the segmentation mask quality without a ground-truth mask. Prediction confidence, edge sharpness, shape connectivity, and area-size penalty are the simple indicators considered in this research. Results show that standard confidence methods fail (r = -0.1394, p = 1.7864e-3, ROC AUC = 0.4275). By contrast, our HUS-QA shows a positive correlation with actual Dice scores (r = 0.4647, p = 3.7510e-28) and achieves a strong ROC-AUC of 0.8405. Therefore, HUS-QA serves as a practical tool for clinical quality control.

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems using 5G and beyond signals of opportunity enable joint wireless sensing and communication using shared infrastructure and spectrum resources. While multistatic ISAC can increase sensing coverage with spatially distributed receivers, dense and dynamic clutter can significantly degrade bistatic range and Doppler estimation, leading to errors in target localization and velocity estimation. This paper presents a multistatic ISAC framework with clutter suppression for high-fidelity estimation of target position and velocity. Distributed clutter is modeled with randomly located scatterers with varying Doppler spreads and radar cross sections to capture dense and dynamic clutter effects. A broad range of conventional signal processing baselines are evaluated for clutter suppression, showing limited robustness under strong clutter conditions. To address this limitation, deep learning-based clutter suppression methods are introduced to improve robustness against dense and dynamic clutter by employing residual and attention-enhanced deep neural network architectures that directly enhance target responses from clutter-contaminated observations. These methods substantially outperform conventional approaches in target position and velocity estimation across diverse clutter conditions in multistatic ISAC.

Current zero-shot anomaly detection methods often rely on complex prompt-learning techniques or computationally expensive sliding-window strategies to achieve fine-grained visual alignment to detect small-scale anomalies. This reliance stems from the fundamental limitation of standard CLIP architectures, where [CLS] token attention and spatial patch pooling struggle to capture subtle, localized anomaly features. While prompt-learning approaches aim to bridge this gap, they typically require a large number of ground-truth segmentation masks from auxiliary datasets, which are often unavailable in specialized domains. In this work, we show an emerging property of multi-head attention pooling in vision-language models: remarkable zero-shot anomaly localization and detection right out of the box. We translate this property into a single-pass anomaly detection technique, RADIOlogy, that does not require dense, windowed execution and significantly outperforms other training-free baselines. Instead, the method relies on a simple contrastive scoring approach that compares the average similarity between vision features and a suite of normal and abnormal prompts. Furthermore, we leverage the agglomerative features of RADIO models to enhance pixel-level anomaly segmentation using a dense anomaly refinement pipeline. Finally, we show how the vision-language family of training-free zero-shot anomaly detection techniques can be applied successfully to the medical domain with minimal modifications. Building and scaling computer-using agents (CUAs) across desktop, mobile, and web environments requires reliable task-completion verification for data curation, evaluation, and reinforcement learning. Typical automated approaches prompt vision-language models (VLMs) to judge trajectories or generate programs to inspect application state. However, both rely on partial views of complex digital environments. VLM judges are restricted to supplied observations, while generated programs depend on accessible state. These views can omit decisive evidence or leave completion judgments unsupported. Tailoring separate verifiers to different platforms and access settings adds further engineering cost. We present VeriCUA, a platform-agnostic framework for verification through agentic exploration. It treats verification as dynamic evidence gathering and assessment within a shared procedure for online and offline settings across platforms and observation modalities. After inspecting the available context to construct a task rubric, the verifier selects GUI or code checks for unresolved requirements and combines their findings under explicit evidence rules. Experiments show improved agreement with reference labels over the compared baselines across these settings, with the largest offline gains on hard cases and stronger rejection of false completion claims online. Further analyses connect these gains to complementary evidence and test-time exploration.

Sparse mixture-of-experts (MoE) models expand parameter capacity by activating a small subset of experts per token. Expert selection directly affects model capabilities under a fixed active-expert budget. Dense evaluation of all experts reveals weak agreement between single-router rankings and expert-utility evaluation rankings, especially in middle and deep layers. Richer signals for selection and computation incur additional cost: selection based on internal expert activations requires preliminary computation, while processing multiple full representations separately through the same expert repeats its computation. We propose Multi-View MoE to improve expert selection with multiple routers and reuse their preferences to modulate expert computation under a fixed expert budget. Its Multi-Router submodule aggregates sigmoid scores from independently initialized routers. These routers develop highly differentiated expert preferences during training, allowing experts strongly favored by one router or jointly supported by several routers to be selected. Multi-View further uses each selected expert's relative scores across routers to mix learned latent views into its input, reusing routing preferences for both selection and computation. Each selected expert executes one forward pass, preserving the active-expert count, expert FLOPs, and all-to-all communication volume. On a 24-layer 10B-A1B model trained on 708B tokens, full Multi-View MoE improves the nine-task downstream mean by 1.18 percentage points over the baseline. Multi-Router alone yields a 0.6-percentage-point gain and improves the rank correlation between router scores and evaluated expert utility, with relative increases of 8.1% globally and approximately 58% in the layer with the lowest single-router alignment. Controlled mixing interventions show the model uses input differences that depend on both the expert and the token.

Reinforcement learning from verifiable rewards (RLVR) is limited by sparse outcome-level feedback on hard reasoning tasks: when all rollouts in a group fail, rewards provide no learning signal. Stronger teachers can provide additional guidance, but this raises a central question: how can such signals be incorporated into RLVR to support successful rollouts while remaining learnable for the student? We distinguish two complementary mechanisms: trajectory-level intervention, which improves access to reward-bearing trajectories, and token-level supervision, which provides dense targets to guide student learning. Our controlled experiments show that either mechanism alone can remain insufficient, motivating their combination. We therefore introduce PIVOT, which inserts teacher-generated corrections into student rollouts and applies token-level KL supervision to these segments alongside the RLVR objective. Beyond their combination, we systematically analyze where to intervene and how to supervise, yielding a recipe for effective guidance. Across hard logic games and mathematical reasoning benchmarks, PIVOT consistently outperforms existing methods, nearly doubling mean avg@8 on logic games from 19.5% for the best-performing baseline to 35.6%.

Uniform Discrete Diffusion Models have emerged as a powerful paradigm for generative modeling on sequence data; however, the information-theoretic principles governing their reverse processes remain underexplored. In this work, we bridge this gap by analyzing the reverse process dynamics through the lens of thermodynamic entropy production and dynamical activity. We use a variational expression of the discrete Wasserstein distance to characterize the dynamics of the generation process. Leveraging these insights, we first introduce the Entropic Discrete Schedule (EDS), which aligns with entropy production, and later construct the Wasserstein Discrete Schedule (WDS), which combines entropy production and dynamical activity to act as a geometric cost. Our experimental results on language modeling show that WDS provide the same results as uniform while using up to half of the computations on the MBPP benchmark. On-policy Self-distillation (OPSD) has proven effective for post-training large language models by constructing a teacher conditioned on privileged references. However, existing approaches keep the teacher fixed either throughout training by consistently exposing it to the full reference, or within each response by adaptively varying partial reference exposure only across responses. In this paper, we argue that neither of them is sufficient. Instead, every token needs its own teacher, as the teacher preference can vary token by token within the same response. Through a teacher-intervention pilot study, we validate that the teacher preference differs across tokens, and reveal that a preferred teacher can be identified for each token through majority voting and KL-based selection. Motivated by these findings, we propose Multi-teacher Adaptive On-policy Self-Distillation (MTA-OPSD), the first token-level adaptive OPSD method. Our method constructs a multi-teacher pool consisting of candidate teachers, and enables every token to adaptively select its preferred teacher during training. Experiments with Qwen3 models on mathematical reasoning tasks show that MTA-OPSD consistently outperforms existing OPSD approaches with an average gain of up to $+5.9$ over the base model, highlighting the importance of adapting teacher supervision at the token level. Given a labeled dataset $\{(x_i, y_i)\}_{i = 1}^n$, consider drawing a parameter vector $\hatθ$ uniformly at random from those that interpolate the data within a width-$W$ depth-$D$ ReLU architecture with continuous weights bounded within $[-M, M]$. We study the generalization properties of $\hatθ$ in the case where the dataset can, in fact, be explained by a smaller $w$-by-$d$ ReLU network. Despite the obliviousness of the selection rule for $\hatθ$, it adaptively generalizes at the rate $\tilde O\left(\frac{wdWD}{n}\right)$, rather than being governed by the VC dimension of the full $W$-by-$D$ hypothesis class. The reason is due to a particular inductive bias in ReLU networks: the $w$-by-$d$ parameter *witnesses* an exponential volume of $W$-by-$D$ interpolating parameters, which dwarfs the volume of poorly generalizing parameters (conditioned on interpolation). We explicitly construct this set of near-equivalent $W$-by-$D$ parameters by a proof technique called *deep lifting*, and then tie the achievable volume to stability properties of the $w$-by-$d$ witness. Examples show that these techniques allow us to convert approximation-theoretic results into generalization guarantees for nonparametric classes. We further show that generalization of uniform-random interpolators can survive label corruptions.

We establish structural properties of the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) for $d$-dimensional Gaussian mixtures whose means lie in a hypercube. We show that, with high probability, the NPMLE based on $n$ independent observations self-regularizes by fitting a mixture model with $O((\frac{\log n}{\log\log n})^d)$ components, achieving the optimal model complexity without explicit model selection. Furthermore, the NPMLE exhibits a structural adaptation property: For data drawn from a finite mixture, the number of fitted components is bounded in probability as $n\to\infty$. Our proof applies a multivariate Jensen-type bound to control the typical number of critical points of the KKT function associated with the first-order optimality conditions. The key step is to lower bound its gradient norm uniformly on complex spheres. We establish this lower bound by decomposing the KKT function into an empirical fluctuation term and a relative density estimation error term, combining small-ball probability estimates for the former with polynomial approximation and Hellinger error bounds for the latter.

Realistic, fast robotics simulations could enable large-scale training of embodied AI models that transfer to the real world. However, despite decades of progress, available simulations cover only a narrow range of real-world tasks and physical phenomena. The core bottleneck is that creating better simulations requires significant expert effort and therefore does not scale. To address this, we introduce Gym-Anything for Robotics, a framework in which coding agents create realistic robotics simulations. Our core insight is that simulation creation is a coding agent task, so improvements in coding agents translate directly into richer and more faithful simulations. We select simulations based on U.S. GDP data to cover economically valuable physical work, define what makes a good simulation and a good task, and develop an adversarial creation-audit loop that checks each simulation and task against these definitions. Using this pipeline, we build RoboWorld, a set of 25 simulations with 25 test and 175 training RL environments of varying difficulty. Even the best frontier models fail on every RoboWorld test task, achieving an average reward of only 0.06. Building on RoboWorld, we introduce several new ways for frontier models to improve, including in-context learning across repeated attempts, a privileged teacher that reads the simulator state and teaches a student in context, self-assisted learning from the model's own privileged experience, and code policies that generate demonstrations across varied scenes to train vision-language-action models (VLAs) such as $π_{0.5}$. Each of these substantially improves performance. We release our pipeline, RL environments, and benchmark to facilitate future research. Foundation models are typically trained in stages: pretraining, midtraining, supervised fine-tuning (SFT), and reinforcement learning (RL), with changes in both data and learning algorithms. We show that this algorithmic separation is not fundamental. By deriving suitable RL objectives as maximum-likelihood fitting to model-generated target distributions, we place all of these stages under a single likelihood-based training algorithm, unified training. This perspective turns the foundation-model training lifecycle into a problem of choosing which data to train on, in what proportions, and when, with conventional staged training as a special case. We instantiate this framework in a unified training system that mixes static data and RL generations within a single trainer. Across controlled and real-world experiments, unified training improves the accuracy-compute tradeoff and task coverage while preserving broader capabilities, and provides a stronger starting point for continual learning. This work lays the groundwork for a unified science of foundation-model training, connecting mathematical principles, training infrastructure, and the development of model capabilities.

This study investigates the capabilities of Large Language Models to simulate counselling clients in educational role-plays in comparison to human role-players. Initially, we recorded role-playing sessions, where novice counsellors interacted with human peers acting as clients, followed by role-plays between humans and clients simulated by Mistrals Mixtral 8x7b using 4-bit quantization. These interactions were analysed with a counselling communication pattern system at sentence level. We investigated two key questions: (1) to what extent LLM-generated responses replicate authentic conversational dynamics and (2) whether counsellors' communication behaviour differs when interacting with human versus LLM-simulated clients. The findings highlight both similarities and differences in the application of counselling patterns across scenarios, showing the potential of LLM-based role-playing exercises to enhance counselling competencies and to identify areas for further refinement in virtual client simulations.

Here we present FARMS, a faithful and efficient foundation that transforms computational mathematics into AI-ready computing knowledge. FARMS connects formal statements to source context, algorithmic meaning and quantitative guarantees through source preparation, reusable representations and semantic review. Across 171 targets in randomized numerical linear algebra and numerical partial differential equations, 157 were accepted by the pipeline, with mean estimated costs of US \$0.85-2.29 per target across sources. Lean-checked implications from explicit source premises connect selected statements to computational skills, illustrated by a heat-flow solve and wave-response compression. In robotics, shape control (or shape servoing) refers to the automatic manipulation of a deformable object to achieve a desired shape. It involves a feedback loop that exploits the relation between robot motion and changes in the measured shape. This relation, known as the interaction Jacobian or, in this context, the deformation Jacobian, depends on the object's mechanical properties, geometry, and boundary conditions (e.g., where the object is grasped). Because these factors are often difficult to model accurately, the deformation Jacobian can be estimated locally from observed shape changes produced by commanded robot motions, without requiring a fine-tuned mechanical model. This article is the first of a two-part tutorial on data-driven Jacobian-based shape control of deformable objects. It introduces the central elements of the approach: the formulation of the shape-control problem, shape representation, estimation and online update of the deformation Jacobian, and a standard control law from the literature. It then assembles these elements into a complete shape-servoing loop, derives a local stability condition for this loop, and illustrates why some target shapes cannot be reached. Part II covers more advanced topics. Throughout both parts, a simulated planar example in which two robot arms manipulate an elastic rod observed by a camera illustrates the concepts.

Clinical genomic analysis requires experts to integrate evolving guidelines, databases, and computational evidence. As sequencing has become increasingly accessible, this complex and labor-intensive process has become a major bottleneck to the timely use of genomic information in clinical decision-making. To fill this gap, we developed ClinGeX, a large-language-model agent that composes 105 curated executable skills through task-specific retrieval and dependency-aware orchestration. On 223 temporally held-out benchmark cases, ClinGeX achieved 71.7\% macro-averaged task-level concordance with expert reference classifications, compared with 45.7\% for the strongest comparator. In a three-condition, counterbalanced human-AI collaboration study, 45 clinical genomic professionals assessed 135 clinically derived cases under routine (no AI assistance), DeepSeek-assisted and ClinGeX-assisted conditions. ClinGeX assistance increased raw case-level concordance across criterion-level variant analysis, genomic interpretation in rare disease and molecular oncology decision-making (51.1\%, 57.8\%, 64.4\% versus 15.6\%, 31.1\%, 20.0\% in comparator conditions) and reduced reported interpretation time in all scenarios. During an exploratory one-month real-world non-interventional assessment, 11 experienced professionals submitted feedback on 96 self-selected analysis episodes and reported frequent conclusion adoption and time savings. These findings support executable domain skills as a promising approach to augment specialist genomic interpretation.

Training data attribution (TDA) identifies which training examples most influenced a model's prediction. Influence function methods are a theoretically grounded family of TDA methods and exploit gradients. To overcome the scalability challenge arising from gradient computation, the most popular strategy is random projection (e.g., TRAK, LoGRA). However, this still faces two bottlenecks when scaling to large training sets and high-quality attribution: \emph{(i)} storing and loading projected per-example gradients for all $N$ training examples, where query latency is dominated by I/O; and \emph{(ii)} forming the $D \times D$ inverse Hessian approximation, which costs $O(D^2)$ memory. Both bottlenecks scale with the projection dimension $D$, yet increasing $D$ is necessary for attribution quality -- creating a quality--scalability tradeoff. We introduce \textbf{LoRIF} (\textbf{Lo}w-\textbf{R}ank \textbf{I}nfluence \textbf{F}unctions), which exploits low-rank structures of gradient to address both bottlenecks. First, we store rank-$c$ factors of projected per-example gradients rather than full matrices, reducing storage and query-time I/O from $O(D)$ to $O(c\sqrt{D})$ per layer per sample. Second, we use truncated SVD with the Woodbury identity to approximate the inverse Hessian term in an $r$-dimensional subspace, reducing memory from $O(D^2)$ to $O(Dr)$. On models from 0.1B to 70B parameters trained on datasets with millions of examples, LoRIF achieves up to 20$\times$ storage reduction and query-time speedup compared to LoGRA, while matching or exceeding its attribution quality. LoRIF makes gradient-based TDA practical at frontier scale. Code is available at https://github.com/doub7e/LoRIF.

As AI's mathematical capabilities rapidly improve, meaningful benchmarks are shifting from university-level problems and math olympiads to research-level mathematics. The Ramanujan Challenge is a benchmark comprised of research-level problems in number theory, including unpublished results and open conjectures. It presented concrete formulas for mathematical constants whose correctness can be checked numerically, while their proofs may require non-obvious mathematics. Here, we analyze the Challenge submissions, measuring the relative success of different AI models, Computer Algebra Systems (CAS), and formal tools. We find correct submissions that are conceptually distinct from the official solutions, and a proof of one of the published open conjectures. Evaluating the submissions exposed a second challenge: judging complex proofs reliably at scale. We introduce an AI-assisted evaluation pipeline for natural language proofs, CAS code, and Lean formalizations that assesses semantic and logical correctness. Compared with the conventional one-shot LLM judgment, our pipeline reduces false-positive verdicts on natural language proofs from 23% to 6% and improves judgment accuracy on supporting code from 46% to 58%. This approach provides a methodology for evaluating research-level mathematics at scale, with potential applications across mathematics and AI for science.

Motivated by recursive self-improvement (RSI), we study how LLM agents can learn through external memory without updating model parameters. Extracting useful experience from a single attempt is difficult: flawed reasoning can produce success, while poor execution can obscure a sound strategy. Preserving its value over time is also difficult: our accumulation baseline without consolidation initially improves but eventually performs below a no-memory baseline. Our key idea is to compare attempts at the same task to identify reusable decisions and refine when they apply. We introduce Hippo, a memory framework inspired by selective hippocampal encoding and replay that learns from these comparisons when shortcomings are diagnosed. It compares the resulting experience with existing memory to merge overlaps and resolve conflicts through explicit applicability conditions. This allows prior guidance to be revised without storing every lesson as a separate entry. Experiments on SWE-bench Verified, WebArena, and Mind2Web show performance gains in all three settings and substantially fewer retained experiences than the accumulation baseline. The gains extend across the evaluated base models of varying capabilities, indicating that memory-based adaptation remains useful even for highly capable models.

Long-context models repeatedly solve closely related retrieval problems. Attention or global retrieval can retain large stores, but each forward pass again searches for what matters. Recurrent compression avoids this search only by deciding earlier what information to preserve. Neither mechanism directly exploits that useful memories at neighbouring retrieval steps may substantially overlap. We propose an alternative in which retrieval is a persistent local traversal through an address space. We separate a memory's content from its address. Utility is defined by the information revealed by retrieving the content, while geometry determines only how cheaply that information can be reached. This leads to a cost-regularised indexing objective that preserves information value inside local neighbourhoods while charging for every memory made locally accessible. Its marginal-value form gives both attractive and exclusion pressures. Thus, complementary memories should be co-retrievable when the additional value exceeds retrieval cost, whereas redundant memories should not occupy the same retrieval set solely because they are individually useful. As a proof of principle, we test only the simplest fixed-geometry instance on MiniGrid Memory. A persistent local traversal head reaches $0.95$ mean return after $0.59$M training steps with a five-token context, compared with $0.94$M for Gaussian absolute addressing and more than $2$M for categorical absolute addressing. The experiment does not test learned geometry or repeated retrieval. Instead, it motivates the hypothesis that stateful retrieval may be easier to learn than stateless. To test the full proposed method further experimentation is necessary.

Mobile money (MoMo) is Ghana's preferred retail payment channel, recording GHC518.4 billion in transactions in December 2025 and over 26.7 million active accounts (Graphic Online, 2026). This growth has coincided with increased social-engineering fraud over Short Message Service (SMS) and Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD), where fraudsters impersonate network operators, agents, relatives, or regulators to obtain personal identification numbers (PINs), identity data, or funds. We present a supervised machine-learning pipeline for classifying scam and legitimate Ghanaian MoMo SMS messages using a labelled corpus of 220 messages across 18 scam and legitimate subcategories. Domain-specific normalisation of currency amounts, phone numbers, and USSD codes preceded TF-IDF vectorisation of unigrams and bigrams. Using stratified five-fold cross-validation and a 20% held-out test set, we trained and evaluated Multinomial Naive Bayes, linear support vector machine (SVM), and Random Forest classifiers using accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC), and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC). Held-out accuracy, F1, and AUC were 1.00 for Naive Bayes and linear SVM; cross-validated accuracy averaged 96.6% (+/-3.3), 94.9% (+/-4.6), and 92.0% (+/-4.2). Discriminative n-grams reflected imperative urgency ("send," "claim," "please send") and PIN solicitation ("PIN," "pincode"); legitimate messages featured confirmatory and cautionary language ("balance," "successful," "do not share"). Findings are contextualised in Sub-Saharan African SMS fraud detection, small template-based corpus ceiling effects, and a pathway toward larger naturalistic multilingual corpora. Interpretable classical classifiers achieve high accuracy on structured MoMo scam text and suit carrier- or handset-level filtering in low-resource, on-device settings.

Predicting how many tokens a large language model (LLM) will decode, using only prefill-phase hidden states, is a key primitive for inference scheduling. We show that current benchmarks conflate predictor quality with task hardness: when the target model, dataset, or sampling configuration changes, reported accuracy collapses even though the predictor is unchanged. We trace this instability to an overlooked error source---the inherent stochasticity of autoregressive decoding---and derive bounds that every prefill-side method must obey. Our analysis treats decoding as a stopped stochastic process. The per-step stopping probability of a response is not constant but ramps up over hundreds of steps, so the decode length inherits a central limit theorem from the many local decisions that determine where a response ends; this yields per-prompt normality with an explicit error term, together with an affine variance law $σ=αμ+b$ whose slope is the coefficient of variation of the number of response segments. Empirically, the normal law reproduces the per-prompt MAE and the central mass of the decode-length distribution to within a few percent, and the residual departures from normality (mild right skew, slight excess kurtosis) are the ones predicted by the sampling-noise correction. Under fixed model, data, and sampling conditions, a broad design space of predictors (MLP, EGTP, FiLM, soft-label, and Mixture-of-Experts variants) converges to similar performance close to the bound, confirming that \emph{system error dominates model error}. We argue for a benchmarking protocol that fixes the model, data, and sampling parameters and that reports relative-error metrics alongside absolute ones. Mobile robots must open doors and drawers, yet their scene maps record what each object is and whether it has moved, not how it will respond to a pull. This paper proposes PhysVLMM, a method that maintains a physical belief for every articulated part of a Vision-Language-Motion Map and answers a planner's queries about it, with two algorithms: a map update and a query. Watching a part move provably cannot identify its dynamics, and a measured pull identifies only the pulled part, up to one direction. PhysVLMM therefore (i) keeps that direction as a posterior instead of a point estimate, (ii) passes the evidence of each pull in closed form to the untouched look-alike parts of the map, and (iii) answers whether an action will succeed at a stated risk, or abstains. On real doors and drawers in 18 homes, it identifies the joint type in 86% of held-out pulls (48% for a learned single-view method) and predicts the response to a pull with 41% lower error than differentiable simulation (CRPS 0.323 vs. 0.544), four orders of magnitude faster (13 ms vs. 230 s per case). The posterior lowers the final-position error from 0.460 to 0.270, sharing lowers the force error of untouched parts from 56% to 42%, and at every stated risk from 0.02 to 0.30 the false-safe answers stay within it. Pooling all measured parts of a home does as well as the look-alike groups, and simpler variants predict where a pulled part stops at least as well.

We present DAWN (Diffusion-based Alignment and unfastening Workflow Network), a hierarchical robotic framework designed to perform real-world, unfastening tasks through multi-modal sensory integration. Autonomous robotic unfastening is crucial for improving recycling processes, enhancing safety, and reducing operational costs; yet, it remains predominantly manual due to inherent challenges in precise screwdriver engagement with fasteners, detailed force execution, and robustness to environmental variability. To address the complexity of learning long-horizon, contact-rich manipulation tasks, we subdivide the unfastening task procedure into two sequential stages: (1) alignment & insertion, and (2) unfastening. DAWN consists of three key components: AlignNet, a diffusion-based policy ensuring precise screwdriver tip engagement; LatchNet, a multi-modal classifier reliably detecting successful stage transitions; and UnfastNet, which achieves stable, force-controlled screw removal. Experimental validation on a Franka Emika robot demonstrates that DAWN achieves alignment & insertion success rates comparable to trained human operators, robustly transitions between stages, and attains an impressive success rate in unfastening across various unseen scenarios. Ablation studies further elucidate critical input modalities and effective training strategies, highlighting DAWN's scalability, robustness, and data efficiency.

Foundation models trained on longitudinal electronic health records (EHRs) can predict clinical diagnoses years in the future, making them a potential tool for disease screening. We developed TRACER (Temporal Risk Assessment with Clinical EHR Representations), a decoder-based foundation model pretrained on data from over 4.5 million patients from four health systems, and evaluated it on 16 incident diseases at 1-, 2-, and 5-year horizons in more than 2 million patients from two health systems excluded from model development. In contrast to typical evaluations that focus on global metrics (e.g., AUROC), we measured performance at the low false-positive rates that are realistic for screening. We found that TRACER retained its discrimination in external health systems, and at 95% specificity, the patients it flagged were up to eight times more likely to be diagnosed within a year than unselected patients. Evaluating at this operating point also revealed what global metrics alone did not: detection and false-alert burden varied across diseases and health systems, even when discrimination appeared stable. Our results illustrate the potential of foundation models for screening and underscore the need for evaluation in health systems excluded from development to assess disease detection and false-alert burden at levels appropriate for intended clinical use.}

Scalable oversight asks how a weak verifier can check the outputs of computations performed by more powerful AI systems. One proposed approach uses relativizing interactive proofs, in which a weak verifier checks the output of a complex oracle-aided computation by interacting with one or more powerful provers. A prominent example is debate, which is highly efficient but assumes that one of two powerful AI models, or provers, is truthful. For certain classes of oracle-aided computations, this assumption can be removed, but at substantially greater computational cost. In this work, we introduce \emph{rewindable interactive proofs} (RIPs), a new model of relativizing interactive proofs for scalable oversight. In an RIP, the verifier may rewind the prover to an earlier state of the interaction and continue from there. This is possible when the prover is an AI model, since the verifier can save a snapshot of the model's state and later restore it. We construct a relativizing RIP for computations whose outputs are robust to changing a small fraction of oracle answers. Our construction is more efficient than prior relativizing proofs that do not assume a truthful prover, and it uses no cryptography. In our construction the honest prover runs in time linear in that of the original computation, and the verifier, after a one-time preprocessing step, runs in time nearly linear in the input length (which can be much smaller than the computation itself). We implement our protocol, report a preliminary MNIST experiment, and show that an RIP can be faster than a state-of-the-art deployed proof system. RIPs may be of independent interest. Rewinding is possible whenever the verifier controls the prover's machine, for example when the prover runs on trusted hardware or in a virtual machine whose state can be checkpointed.

Building a language model of one's own no longer requires a data centre. This tutorial trains one from scratch, tokenizer included, on one consumer GPU, and shows how to tell whether it is good for the tasks of a specialist domain. It proposes no new method. It releases a tested Python package and two notebooks in Brazilian Portuguese with autoregressive and masked diffusion generation on one network, a preregistered comparison protocol, legal tasks built from text alone with a Kneser-Ney floor and public yardsticks, reference numbers for models of 11 to 12M parameters, and a catalogue of defects that only measurement revealed. On Brazilian prose and federal laws, at minutes per run, the autoregressive mode peaks at 64 epochs over the same text and then memorises it, while masked diffusion improves up to 256. At their best points on test, the diffusion bound exceeds the autoregressive likelihood by 0.06 bits per byte, within the preregistered minimum effect. On held-out laws and on acts published after training, the model ties a 6-gram floor in likelihood on the same windows, and it loses to the floor at continuing those acts. It beats the floor at detecting tampered text, and fills cross-references more often than the floor and public models of 160M and 630M parameters, only in decrees, a genre absent from training, where those scorers stay near or below chance, and in filling the blank only when each group weighs the same, since per item it ties the 630M model. On laws, the public models, trained with about 5x10^2 to 10^5 times its compute, lead in tampered text and continuation. The blind human reading is preregistered and not part of this version.

How effectively can vision-language-action (VLA) models learn diverse language-conditioned behaviors as training data scales? Investigating this question requires large and varied robot datasets, whose collection on physical robots remains costly. We introduce BURGER, a language-conditioned robotic drawing benchmark with a scalable, prompt-driven pipeline for generating continuous drawing trajectories, both in simulation and the real world. In BURGER, an agent starts from the same blank canvas and controls a robot arm to draw the object or spatial composition specified by language, while each instruction allows an open-ended variety of valid drawings and stroke orders. Using 28,200 simulated demonstrations spanning 282 drawing tasks, we evaluate five representative VLA models across data scales, language grounding, and multimodal behavior. BURGER supports fine-grained analysis of language grounding, spatial composition, and action generation, revealing distinct failure patterns across VLA models. Our experiments suggest that some VLA models can benefit from greater task diversity and demonstration scale, capture multimodal drawing behaviors, and generalize to unseen compositions of familiar objects. Finally, we deploy a trained policy on a Franka Panda arm, demonstrating the ability to draw reactively under human intervention. Project homepage and code can be found at https://siyingzhao.github.io/BURGER/.

Images reveal appearances, but counting often asks about physical objects. A single entity may be visible directly, in several reflections, or through glass, so detecting every visible occurrence does not determine how many entities are present. Existing visual counting benchmarks rarely separate these two operations. We introduce PhysCount, a benchmark for evaluating whether multimodal large language models (MLLMs) can distinguish what appears in an image from what physically exists in the scene. PhysCount contains 546 real-world images and 4,595 human-written questions organized into 651 target-specific groups. For each group, annotators locate the relevant appearances, label how each is observed, and identify appearances of the same entity. Four complementary question families test the enumeration of appearances, the enumeration of physical entities, image-formation-specific counting, and appearance--entity correspondence. We measure both accuracy on each family and the proportion of groups answered entirely correctly. Across 40 MLLMs, counting visible appearances is substantially easier than recovering the identities that connect them. Even the strongest model answers every question correctly in only 13.36\% of groups. Performance declines when one entity produces many appearances or when its appearances cross observation modes. Higher image resolution improves access to visual evidence but brings limited gains in complete-group accuracy, whereas answering related questions jointly produces a marked improvement. These results expose a gap between recognizing what is visible and correctly recovering the physical entities behind those observations.

We introduce NEOPIC, a framework for learning the field operator in particle-based methods applied to kinetic plasma simulations. Its key novelty is a neural operator that acts directly on the empirical measure of the particles, rather than on a grid, and is evaluated at the particle positions. No mesh or tree is needed and, unlike grid-based neural operators, no deposition onto a mesh takes place, so the particle noise that dominates the inputs of particle simulations is not aliased. Since it replaces only the field solve, it serves as a plug-and-play field solver for particle-based methods: it can be trained on data from particle-in-cell, particle-in-Fourier or tree codes, and combined with any time integrator, including implicit schemes. We prove that the discrete evaluation coincides with the continuous operator at any number of particles (representation equivalence) and derive an error analysis that separates sampling, learning and time-stepping errors: up to the learning error, NEOPIC has the error structure of standard Monte Carlo particle methods. We show that the particle noise in the training data acts as an implicit regularizer, which gives guidance on the number of training particles in relation to the particle numbers used at inference. A complexity analysis shows that NEOPIC is an $O(N_p)$ method whose constants are set by the architecture alone, independently of any mesh or tree. Numerical experiments on electrostatic benchmarks in two and three dimensions, including Landau damping, two-stream and bump-on-tail instabilities, a cyclotron mini-app and a Penning trap, confirm the theoretical findings. A single model trained on several mini-apps generated by different reference methods captures all of them and remains stable up to twice the training time window, which points towards foundation models for fields in particle-based methods.
