Dungeons & Dragons Encounter Analysis with Semi-Random Simulation in Foundry VTT

ravyn Hardcastle, Matthew Guzdial

原文摘要

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) in which a group of players, guided by a Game Master, roleplay a fantasy adventure with simulated combat and improvisational narrative. In D&D, an encounter is a single instance of simulated combat, where the players must use their characters to attempt to defeat a selection of enemy characters that the GM controls. D&D has multiple systems that approximate encounter difficulty by summing individual difficulty values that designers predefine for each enemy. However, since players and enemies can have a wide variety of capabilities, encounter difficulty depends on more than just the estimated difficulty of each monster. For example, these metrics do not account for positioning and dungeon layout, the synergies between monster abilities, and player party composition. We have created a tool, Mage-Hand, that can simulate D&D encounters semi-randomly using Foundry Virtual Tabletop, a virtual tabletop (VTT) system. In this paper, we show that our tool's simulated winrates have a strong correlation with D&D's published difficulty evaluation metrics, while also better aligning with some players' reported experiences.

API-TAIL: Detecting Model Substitution in LLM APIs through Temperature-Aligned Likelihood Tails

Haocheng Mei, Yuchuan Tian, Ye Yuan, Chao Xu, Allen Chen, Kai Han, Yunhe Wang

原文摘要

Commercial language model APIs return only text, allowing a provider to cut costs by quietly routing a fraction of user requests to a cheaper substitute model while billing for the advertised one. Detecting such partial substitution is challenging because honest providers also alter the output distribution through undocumented decoding and serving choices, such as temperature scaling, sampling truncation, repetition and presence penalties, and default system prompts, forcing an audit to test against a composite null of legitimate configurations rather than a single reference. Our key insight is that these legitimate variations primarily shift response typicality across the entire batch, whereas partial substitution injects individual responses that remain anomalous under the claimed model. Building on this, we introduce API-TAIL, a typicality audit that first absorbs batch-level shifts by aligning a single effective temperature to center standardized surprisal scores across the audited batch, and then flags the endpoint if the number of remaining tail responses exceeds a threshold calibrated across legitimate configurations. Evaluated on real-world API responses and constructed substitution mixtures, API-TAIL controls false alarms across diverse honest providers and detects low-rate partial substitution with a small query budget. Under a common composite calibration, it outperforms the adapted rank- and MMD-based audit baselines.

Learning Event-based Obstacle Avoidance via Differentiable Simulation

Chenlu Shou, Yunfan Ren, Jiaxu Xing, Davide Scaramuzza

原文摘要

Reliable obstacle avoidance is essential for safe quadrotor flight in unknown environments, yet conventional frame-based cameras remain challenged by motion blur, limited dynamic range, and latency under fast motion. Event cameras, with sub-millisecond latency, high dynamic range, and negligible motion blur, offer a promising alternative, but leveraging them for closed-loop control remains difficult. Existing approaches either adopt cascaded architectures that first estimate depth and then map it to control commands, introducing error propagation, or achieve end-to-end control through costly offline pretraining before online fine-tuning can even begin. We address these challenges with a CUDA-based event simulator that exploits GPU parallelism to render events efficiently within the training loop, integrated into a differentiable simulation pipeline that enables direct gradient backpropagation through the differentiable physics model, improving sample efficiency. This allows us to train an end-to-end policy that maps event frames directly to control commands, without intermediate depth estimation. We validate our approach through zero-shot real-world deployment on a quadrotor, achieving robust obstacle avoidance in both odometry-assisted and odometry-free settings, including under low-light conditions where conventional cameras typically fail.

Orthogonal Inference for Conditional Z-Estimation without Cross-Fitting: A Distributional Nearest-Neighbor Approach

Jakob R. Juergens

原文摘要

Estimating conditional parameters, such as heterogeneous treatment effects, often requires rich covariate adjustment, even when the parameters are reported along only a few dimensions. Fitting nuisance functions on the full sample makes all observations available for adjustment, but creates dependence between fitted scores and the observations at which they are evaluated, which is typically avoided by cross-fitting. We develop pointwise inference with full-sample nuisance predictions for exactly identified conditional moment equations, recovering conditional average treatment effects as a special case. We localize the estimating equations around the reporting point using distributional nearest neighbors (DNN), a U-statistic-based averaging procedure. Under sufficient conditions on the local design, orthogonality, prediction accuracy and quantitative deletion stability, the estimator is asymptotically normal, and a frozen-score jackknife consistently estimates its limiting covariance with nuisance predictions held fixed. In simulations, full-sample and cross-fitted inference perform similarly, with coverage shortfalls from nuisance approximation error, spatial bias and heavy studentized tails. An application to 401(k) eligibility using Survey of Income and Program Participation data finds similar estimates across nuisance prediction methods, with wide normal-reference intervals.

Stochastic Flow Map for Count Data

Ganchao Wei

原文摘要

High-dimensional count data are common in scientific applications, but most diffusion and flow models are designed for continuous or categorical data, and generation often requires many sequential model evaluations. Here, we propose Count Flow Map, a generative model that learns finite-time transitions directly in count space for one- or few-step generation and transport between count distributions. Our model directly learns stochastic transitions over finite time intervals, using Poisson births and Binomial deaths to preserve nonnegative integer counts without a predefined maximum. These transition models are trained to match the underlying local birth--death dynamics and to maintain consistency across step sizes. We characterize the connection between local dynamics and finite-time transition consistency and derive a bound on the generation error. After validating Count Flow Map in several simulations, we apply it to single-cell drug perturbation prediction and neural population forecasting, where it captures perturbation responses and supports forecasts of high-activity events with only one or a few model evaluations. Together, these experiments demonstrate that Count Flow Map enables high-quality generation directly in count space across inference budgets, from one-step to few-step generation, using a single trained model.

What do MLLMs know about 'Waldo'? Evaluating Visual Reasoning under Multi-Instance Multi-Object Challenges

Saumya Mundra, Ajoy Mondal, Vineeth N Balasubramanian, C. V. Jawahar

原文摘要

Recent advances in Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have led to significant progress in visual reasoning capabilities. However, existing benchmarks curate image-question pairs pertaining to object categories with few instances, enabling trivial object referencing and limited visual ambiguity. In this work, we introduce MIMO-Bench, a benchmark for evaluating MLLMs in a Multi-Instance per Multi-Object categories (MIMO) setting. Each image-question pair in our benchmark pertains to instances belonging to object categories with multiple instances. The presence of such similar feature distractors causes hindrance in basic visual reasoning tasks, necessitating the referring expression to be composed of multiple visual subtasks to uniquely and unambiguously identify the target object. MIMO-Bench comprises 3,802 image-question pairs across attribute binding and numerical counting tasks. Despite impressive performances on existing benchmarks, both SOTA open-source (InternVL, QwenVL) and proprietary (Gemini, GPT-5) models exhibit substantially lower performance on MIMO-Bench, highlighting their limitations in the MIMO setting. The benchmark will be made publicly available.

Planned Restlessness: Delayed Meta Bandits with Budgets

Sudipto Guha

原文摘要

We study episodic finite-horizon Bayesian bandits, or meta-bandits, with independent arms. Each episode draws fresh arm qualities from unknown recurring priors. Observations arrive after known delays, and plays obey hard per-episode caps and total budgets. A play earns reward and informs both the current quality and the recurring prior: the learner must explore, use, and generalize. We formulate a common planning optimization over learning trajectories. Its LP relaxation values experiments through current reward, resource consumption and continuation: the value of future decisions from the learning state produced. Dual prices separate the arms into local programs and certify every admissible policy, including hierarchical Thompson sampling. Execution enforces the hard constraints while preserving the promised learning transitions or accounting for their loss. The framework also represents risk-sensitive objectives and prices purchased observations and buyout options. Delayed reports create planned restlessness: an arm's information changes while it is not played, through reports of its own earlier plays arriving on a known calendar. For stationary priors, finite reward alphabets, bounded report lag and nonbinding budgets, posterior sampling over the recurring priors bounds the price of not knowing them by $O(\sqrt{N})$ over $N$ episodes, with other parameters fixed. For one undelayed $T$-step episode with arms capped at $T/X$ plays each, we obtain the LP-relative approximation factor $1+(2πX)^{-1/2}+O(X^{-1})$, improving previous factors, with a matching lower bound for the leading term.

GradSplat: Gradients Inside the Forward Pass for Feed-Forward 3D Gaussian Splatting

Jingong Chen, Linlian Jiang, Guangyuan Li, Xinxin Zuo, Yang Wang, Chulwoo Pack, Kyle Gao, Kwanghee Won

原文摘要

Feed-forward 3D Gaussian Splatting predicts a scene from a few images, but our predictor is less accurate than its own Gaussians optimized per scene on those images. This gap lies mostly in the shape of the Gaussians, their scale and rotation, since optimizing the shape alone recovers almost all of it and opacity and color recover less. Gradient steps on the input views correct this shape, and the model holds these views at inference. Log-anisotropy correction changes the axis ratios of each Gaussian in log space at constant volume, and in-forward gradient refinement renders the Gaussians into the input views and applies the gradient of the photometric loss with a learned recurrent update, first to opacity and color and then to the shape. GradSplat is a feed-forward model that refines its own Gaussians by learned gradient steps inside its forward pass, with no target view. On both complete six-view RealEstate10K protocols, it has the best PSNR and SSIM among nine methods and keeps its accuracy from $6$ to $42$ input views. Without fine-tuning, it is the most accurate on DL3DV and has the best PSNR and SSIM on ScanNet++. The code will be released at https://github.com/Jingong-Chen/GradSplat/.

Student-LLM Interactions During Math Learning: Limited Epistemic Proactivity Overall, but Within-chat Change Predicts Performance Without AI

Rania Abdelghani, Peter Kaiser, Kou Murayama

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for learning, raising a key question: can learners remain epistemically proactive, retaining responsibility for the cognitive and regulatory activities through which learning is produced while working with AI? Because this responsibility may change as interactions unfold, we examine epistemic proactivity as a developing process. We conceptualize epistemic proactivity through self-regulated learning (SRL) moves, complemented by help-seeking strategies and manifestations of epistemic vigilance. We analyzed these behaviors in 880 substantive turns from 112 secondary-school students completing open-ended mathematical-modeling practice with a general-purpose LLM (Mistral). Overall, students showed limited observable epistemic proactivity: their interactions were strongly request-dominated, with planning, monitoring, and evaluation relatively rare, although low-quality AI responses elicited more explicit evaluation. Temporal analyses qualified this picture: explicit SRL-related moves increased modestly over the chat, but help-seeking strategies became less understanding-oriented. Crucially, these temporal trajectories in help-seeking strategies predicted their post-test performance without AI beyond pre-test and aggregate patterns: students whose requests became more understanding-oriented performed better once AI assistance was removed. Thus, while students had a limited epistemic proactivity overall, its temporal development still was a critical predictor of post-test performance without AI. These results underscore the importance of examining the temporal organization of epistemic proactivity, rather than isolated prompt types, for understanding AI-supported learning. We release our fully-anonymized dataset publicly in an OSF repository.

Quantum lower bounds for convex optimization and real matrix-vector query problems

Andrew M. Childs

原文摘要

We (the author and the AI systems that did the heavy lifting) show that the quantum query complexity of minimizing a convex function over a convex subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with evaluation and membership queries is $\tildeΩ(n)$, nearly matching the best known upper bound. In particular, we show this even for quadratic minimization, which is equivalent to inverting an $n \times n$ real matrix using matrix-vector queries. We also show linear or nearly linear lower bounds on the quantum query complexity of computing the trace, the sign of the determinant, and the magnitude of the determinant of a real matrix in the matrix-vector query model. We use a novel quantum lower bound technique, the determinantal witness method, based on identifying a witness whose Fourier transform vanishes on low-rank matrices and that correlates well with the function being computed.

Diverse Representation in Approval-Based Committee Voting

Julian Chingoma, Davide Grossi, Feline Lindeboom, Jan Maly

原文摘要

The study of approval-based committee voting has so far focused predominantly on proportional representation. The canonical notion of diverse representation, based on the Chamberlin-Courant score, counts the number of voters with at least one representative in the committee, making it an individualistic notion. We develop a more comprehensive theory that instead requires the representation of many groups of voters, grounding it in the justified representation (JR) axiom, which we strengthen in two directions. First, we study the existing axioms of Strong JR (SJR) and Semi-Strong JR (SSJR), which consider the same cohesive groups as JR but demand stricter representation. We show that neither can be optimized efficiently on general domains (unless P = NP), but both can be on the Candidate Interval and Voter Interval domain. Second, to capture the unique and defining opinions of a group, we introduce Distinctive Representation (DR) and its local optimization variant, Local DR. We address satisfiability and computation time, and show (Local) DR to be distinct from known proportionality and diversity axioms. Experiments on real-world and synthetic data show that Local DR performs well on multiple empirical measures of diversity.

A Defense-Aware Explainable AI Framework for Feature-Level Vulnerability Analysis in Optimal Power Flow

S. M. Monzurul Hoque Chowdhury, Qinghua Li, Jianhui Wang

原文摘要

Optimal power flow (OPF) is a foundational analysis in power system operation, and inaccuracies in OPF decision-making can result in significant operational and security consequences. With the increasing adoption of machine-learning-based OPF surrogate models for real-time and large-scale applications, power system operation has become more susceptible to cyber threats, including data manipulation and false data injection attacks. Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), particularly Shapley value-based approaches, has been employed to quantify the influence of input features on OPF outputs. Features exhibiting high influence are commonly interpreted as vulnerable. However, this interpretation neglects the role of attack detection mechanisms in the system, which typically monitor input-to-input relationships to detect anomalous behavior. Consequently, highly influential features may be readily detectable and may not represent the most vulnerable attack surfaces. To address this limitation, we propose a defense-aware explainable AI framework that explicitly incorporates attack detectability alongside operational impact. The framework integrates an OPF surrogate model representing input-to-output dependencies with a vanilla autoencoder representing input-to-input dependencies. Shapley-based explainability is applied to both models to construct a feature-level vulnerability metric. Empirical evaluation on IEEE test systems demonstrates that the proposed framework more accurately identifies security-relevant vulnerabilities than conventional OPF-surrogate-model-only explainability approaches.

CoCoNet: Convex Conformal Network for Multi-Dimensional Uncertainty Regions

Alireza Moradi, Thomas Bruys, Pascal Van Hentenryck, Reza Zandehshahvar

原文摘要

Conformal prediction (CP) provides distribution-free coverage guarantees under exchangeability, but the efficiency of its prediction regions depends critically on the choice of the conformity score. This is particularly important in multivariate regression, where dependencies across output dimensions induce complex joint uncertainty structures. This paper introduces CoCoNet (Convex Conformal Network) for learning convex conformity scores that induce flexible, data-adaptive prediction regions. CoCoNet learns the score from held-out data by optimizing prediction-region efficiency while enforcing convexity with respect to the residual. CoCoNet then applies split-conformal calibration to retain finite-sample coverage guarantees. The paper presents two variants of the method: CoCoNet$_{\mathrm{Spline}}$, based on piecewise-linear scores, and CoCoNet$_{\mathrm{ICNN}}$, based on Input Convex Neural Networks. Experiments compare CoCoNet with other CP baselines over synthetic and real-world datasets with output dimensions ranging from 2 to 16. The results demonstrate the flexibility of CoCoNet in learning different response types. Across 8 models and 30 multi-dimensional regression tasks, CoCoNet$_\text{ICNN}$ and CoCoNet$_{\mathrm{Spline}\text{-}\ell_1}$ achieve the best efficiencies with average ranks of 1.45 and 2.75, respectively. In particular, CoCoNet$_\text{ICNN}$ ranks first on 22 tasks out of 30 in terms of efficiency.

Improving JEV Entailment Reranking with Span Readouts and Selective Adaptation

Haocheng Mei, Yuchuan Tian, Ye Yuan, Enhua Wu, Chao Xu, Allen Chen, Kai Han, Yunhe Wang

原文摘要

JEV decision models pair a language model backbone with a lightweight scoring head to select among natural-language options. Direct selection compares candidate answers within one request, whereas entailment reranking evaluates each candidate in a separate natural language inference (NLI) request over fixed relation options. We examine whether the readout and adaptation choices used for direct selection remain effective for cross-request reranking. We combine a mean-span readout with selective backbone adaptation. Mean-span pooling replaces the option-ending pointer with an average of the contextualized states inside each NLI option, without adding head parameters. Selective adaptation retains low-rank updates in attention and gated DeltaNet projections while removing feed-forward adapters. On MC11, which averages accuracy over eleven reranking configurations from seven sources, selective adaptation improves NeoHorse-1-4B accuracy over the all-module baseline while cutting trainable parameters by more than half, and mean-span pooling yields further consistent gains at the same parameter count.

Optimization-based lane-changing trajectory planning in mixed traffic with embedded input convex neural networks

Yuanxiang Yang, Yu Liu, Fabricio Oliveira, Yu Han, Claudio Roncoli

原文摘要

Lane-changing (LC) maneuvers are highly challenging vehicle interactions, with substantial implications for traffic safety and efficiency. Developing effective LC strategies for connected and automated vehicles in mixed traffic is complicated by the uncertainty associated with surrounding-vehicle behavior and the computational burden of embedding realistic prediction models within optimization schemes. To capture these complex interactions while retaining tractability, this study proposes a data-driven optimization framework that embeds neural network (NN) surrogates for safety and lateral comfort within a Bézier-curve-based trajectory planner. Specifically, the safety cost during the LC process is quantified via a surrogate composed of an input convex recurrent neural network (ICRNN) encoding the planned trajectory, a fully input convex neural network (FICNN) embedding the LC duration, and a partially input convex neural network (PICNN) decoder fusing them with historical traffic states; separately, another FICNN surrogate approximates the optimal lateral comfort cost as a function of the LC duration. Both surrogates are embedded via linear programming (LP) formulations, avoiding the binary variables required by conventional mixed-integer programming (MIP) approaches for NN-embedded optimization. We further theoretically establish their exactness at optimality and extend the framework to problems with additional analytical objective terms and multiple surrogates. Experiments on a hybrid dataset combining real-world and simulated trajectories demonstrate that the proposed method achieves surrogate accuracy competitive with unconstrained baselines while substantially improving optimization efficiency over conventional MIPs. Closed-loop simulations further show that the proposed planners markedly reduce the weighted planning cost and consistently outperform baseline methods.

Dialectics of Alignment: Harnessing Unsafe Knowledge for Dynamic Safety Routing

Maryam Hashemzadeh, Jerry Huang, Minseon Kim, Marc-Alexandre Côté, Sarath Chandar

原文摘要

The prevailing paradigm in large language model (LLM) alignment operates via erasure, filtering unsafe data or training models to strictly refuse harmful prompts. While effective at reducing immediate toxicity, this approach fundamentally constricts the model's epistemological scope, resulting in over-cautious systems that output uninformative blanket refusals to sensitive yet benign queries. In this work, we challenge the orthodoxy that unsafe data must be discarded. We propose a dialectical approach to alignment, positing that unsafe data encodes rich, domain-specific knowledge critical for nuanced, safe, and informative generation. To operationalize this, we introduce SafeMoE, a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) framework that isolates unsafe knowledge into domain-specific Low-Rank Adapters (LoRA experts) trained exclusively on harmful corpora. To synthesize safety from these unsafe primitives, we train a lightweight gating network using a minimal, highly curated set of safe-informative responses (as few as 100 samples per domain). During inference, this router dynamically orchestrates the unsafe experts, effectively steering the generation trajectory toward safe outcomes while harnessing the experts' deep domain knowledge. Extensive empirical evaluations across stringent safety benchmarks demonstrate that SafeMoE is not only safer, achieving over a 20% relative improvement in safe response rate over the strongest baseline (RealSafe-R1 on PKU-SafeRLHF; more than a 15% absolute gain), but also produces more informative responses when safety and harmfulness are of paramount concern. Furthermore, the routing mechanism exhibits strong zero-shot generalization to unseen domains and broader safety tasks without domain-specific supervision. Our findings suggest a paradigm shift in alignment: true safety requires not the masking of unsafe knowledge, but its controlled integration.

Memorization Capacity of Invariant Convolutional Neural Nets

Sjoerd Dirksen, Patrick Finke, Paul Geuchen

原文摘要

Neural networks are powerful memorizers which are often able to interpolate their training data even when the labels have been randomized. While there exists an extensive literature on the memorization capacity of fully connected networks, in practice more specific architectures with problem-dependent properties are preferred, such as convolutional networks for image classification. In this paper we consider convolutional networks which are invariant with respect to a given arbitrary finite group of orthogonal transformations, which may include translations, reflections, and/or rotations of images and invariances of higher order tensors. We prove upper bounds on the size of an invariant convolutional neural network with threshold activations that is required to interpolate a given dataset with two classes. Our bounds are formulated in terms of a complexity measure that takes the invariant structure into account and is instance-specific, i.e., it is related to the mutual arrangement of the classes in the given dataset and their geometric properties rather than the number of samples. Our proof is constructive: for given input data, instances of an interpolating network can be computed via a randomized algorithm with high probability. In numerical experiments we investigate the practical effectiveness of this algorithm.

Selective Sliding Mode Control Enhances Robustness of Aerial Robots Under Disturbances

Anoop Kiran, Thales C. Silva, Nora Ayanian

原文摘要

Quadrotor control under disturbances such as wind gusts and payload variations remains challenging. First-order sliding mode control (SMC) and matched/unmatched uncertainty distinction are classical approaches; however, neither tells a practitioner which loops in a cascaded controller should be made robust to sustain disturbances, how to tune those loops, nor what the additional costs are on an embedded processor. Applying robust control uniformly across all axes addresses disturbances indiscriminately, adding tuning effort on axes where no disturbance acts. On inherently underactuated vehicles, disturbances along some axes cannot be opposed directly at all. We propose a principled methodology for deciding where robust control belongs in a cascaded architecture, with all control running onboard the vehicle. We recover the acting disturbance from PID hover flights under disturbance by inverting the equations of motion, use the recovered signal to identify and quantify the excited axes, and deploy robust control where it counts. Experiments on a Crazyflie 2.1 quadrotor under slung-payload and oblique-wind disturbances show tracking improvements concentrated on the axes the rule selects, and gain sweeps confirm that the switching gain reduces error on matched axes but has no effect on an excited unmatched axis, as the analysis predicts.

OneScene-Bench: Do Vision-Language Models Integrate Evidence Across Views?

Swathi Suhas, Anurag Das, Bernt Schiele, Jonas Fischer

原文摘要

Vision-language models (VLMs) increasingly process multiple views of the same scene, but it remains unclear whether they integrate these observations into a coherent scene-level representation. Existing multi-image evaluations do not isolate this capability, as tasks may admit correct solutions through independent per-view processing without requiring cross-view correspondence. We introduce OneScene-Bench, a controlled benchmark designed to explicitly distinguish when cross-view integration is necessary. Our benchmark evaluates three complementary capabilities on real-world multi-view scenes: unique object counting, cross-view consistency, and spatial reasoning. For counting, we control object overlap across views to separate cases solvable by simple per-view aggregation from those requiring instance-level correspondence. For consistency, we introduce localized edits in shared and view-specific regions, testing whether models distinguish genuine scene contradictions from differences caused by viewpoint and visibility. For spatial reasoning, we construct object relations that require combining spatial evidence across viewpoints to compare physical proximity. We evaluate twelve state-of-the-art open-weight and proprietary VLMs and find that counting accuracy drops substantially on complementary views, ranging from 4.5-50.0%, compared with 45.5-81.5% on complete-overlap examples. Moreover, cross-view consistency remains around 50% across models, including recent proprietary VLMs, despite substantially stronger performance on spatial reasoning. Our results reveal a substantial gap between processing multiple images and integrating evidence across them, highlighting the need for evaluations that explicitly test scene-level multi-view understanding. Code and data are available at https://github.com/swathisuhas/OneScene-Bench.

TreasuryQA Bench: Can AI Agents Work an Archive of Scanned Financial Records?

Ritiz Tambi, Sahar Shayegan, Joshua Meyer, Sun Kim, Ali Khan, Victor Shih, Mehdi Jamei, Andi Partovi

原文摘要

Organisations keep decades of financial records as scanned PDFs on shared drives, and AI agents can now reach those drives through Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers. Existing benchmarks do not mirror this production setting because they simplify the task. In some, the relevant documents are handed to the agent, so it never has to search. In others, the agent searches through documents with pre-extracted text, so it never has to read scanned images. We introduce TreasuryQA Bench, which requires both: 70 questions over 1,435 scanned U.S. Treasury publications, held in Veris's high-fidelity Dropbox twin. In each task the agent searches for the relevant file through Dropbox's MCP server, reads the pages it needs with Reducto's hosted OCR server or its own tools, and replies with one exact figure. A Python grader checks each answer against an accepted range around the correct value. In this paper we present results from ten agents. The best, Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, solves 64.8% of attempts and the worst, GPT-5.6 Terra in Codex, solves 16.7%, so the benchmark is far from saturated. We also test how scan quality affects performance: every agent solves fewer tasks on the blurriest scans. Most failed attempts reply with a wrong number rather than no number, and the most common cause is a digit misread from the scan. Three worked examples are included with their answer keys.

Two behavioural pseudometrics for continuous-time Markov processes

Linan Chen, Florence Clerc, Prakash Panangaden

原文摘要

Bisimulation is a concept that captures behavioural equivalence of states in a variety of types of transition systems. It has been widely studied in discrete-time settings where a key notion is the bisimulation metric which quantifies "how similar two states are". In [ 11], we generalized the concept of bisimulation metric in order to metrize the behaviour of continuous-time Markov processes. Similarly to the discrete-time case, we constructed a pseudometric following two iterative approaches - through a functional and through a real-valued logic, and showed that the outcomes coincide: the pseudometric obtained from the logic is a specific fixpoint of the functional which yields our first pseudometric. However, different from the discrete-time setting, in which the process has a step-by-step dynamics, the behavioural pseudometric we constructed applies to Markov processes that evolve continuously through time, such as diffusions and jump diffusions. While our treatment of the pseudometric in [11] relied on the time-indexed Markov kernels, in [ 8 , 9, 10 ], we showed the importance of trajectories in the consideration of behavioural equivalences for true continuous-time Markov processes. In this paper, we take the work from [11 ] further and propose a second behavioural pseudometric for diffusions based on trajectories. We conduct a similar study of this pseudometric from both the perspective of a functional and the viewpoint of a real-valued logic. We also compare this pseudometric with the first pseudometric obtained in [11].

Adaptive Local Measurements For Quantum Learning Can Exponentially Outperform Nonadaptive Global Measurements

Alireza Goldar, Zhen Qin, Zhihui Zhu, Zhe-Xuan Gong, Michael B. Wakin

原文摘要

Can measurements chosen adaptively, in response to earlier outcomes, be exponentially more informative than measurements fixed in advance? In many quantum settings, adaptivity helps at most polynomially; known exponential advantages require coherent measurements across copies or restricted measurements. We show an exponential advantage measuring one copy at a time, with no quantum memory kept between state copies, even when the nonadaptive learner may perform arbitrary global measurements on each copy. We construct explicit families of multi-qubit states in which a scalar parameter is encoded in one of exponentially many candidate observables, with an auxiliary marker indicating which one. An adaptive protocol identifies the relevant observable and then measures it using only single-qubit measurements and one round of adaptation. At fixed accuracy, it needs logarithmically many copies as the qubit count grows, whereas every nonadaptive protocol needs exponentially many. The same mechanism yields an exponential gap in local asymptotic minimax mean squared error constants, tight up to the exponential base. The states are separable and classical in label-dependent product bases; no entanglement or other nonclassical correlations are required. The gap comes from measurement incompatibility: the candidate observables cannot be measured jointly, so a fixed measurement must divide its information budget among them, while adaptivity selects the informative one. Accordingly, the separation disappears when the candidate observables commute, and cannot occur with fully observed classical samples. Measurement incompatibility thus emerges as a resource for quantum learning, distinct from entanglement and quantum memory, that classical feedback alone can exploit.

原文摘要

The min-sum $k$-clustering problem asks to partition an input of $n$ points into $k$ clusters so as to minimize the total pairwise distance within clusters. It is a natural alternative to center-based objectives when the data is not well captured by a small set of representative points. We study for this problem two standard sketching methods, dimension reduction and coresets, which represent the input more compactly while preserving the min-sum cost of every $k$-partition up to $1\pm\varepsilon$ factor. Our first contribution addresses dimension reduction in Euclidean space. The Johnson-Lindenstrauss (JL) Lemma readily implies that a random linear map to target dimension $t=O(\varepsilon^{-2}\log n)$ preserves, with high probability, the min-sum cost of all $k$-partitions. We show that target dimension $t=O(\varepsilon^{-2}(ddim\cdot\log(1/\varepsilon)+\log k+\log\log n))$ suffices for Euclidean inputs of doubling dimension at most $ddim$, and moreover this bound is nearly optimal. We also show that target dimension $t=O(\varepsilon^{-2}(\log(1/\varepsilon)+\log k+\logΔ))$ suffices for Euclidean inputs of aspect ratio at most $Δ$. Our second contribution is to design the first $\varepsilon$-coreset for metric min-sum $k$-clustering. It is actually a movement-based coreset, has size $(1/\varepsilon)^{O(ddim)} k\log n$ for inputs of doubling dimension at most $ddim$, and can be constructed in randomized near-linear-time. We further use these coresets to design streaming algorithms for the problem.

NavSight in the Wild: Understanding Real-World Use of a Mobile Augmented Reality Application for People with Low Vision in Outdoor Navigation

原文摘要

The ability to navigate outdoors safely and independently is crucial yet challenging for people with low vision (PLV). While various augmented reality (AR) systems for low vision have been designed and evaluated in ideal lab environments, no research has investigated their real-world feasibility and challenges. We present NavSight, a mobile AR application that assists PLV in outdoor navigation by recognizing important outdoor objects (e.g., curb, vehicle) and rendering real-time visual augmentations. Through a seven-day diary study with 12 PLV in real-world settings, we characterize the impact of NavSight on scene perception, users' configuration strategies on what objects to augment and how to augment them across scenarios, how users made sense of and responded to recognition errors, and the social acceptability of using NavSight in public. We further identify environmental factors affecting recognition, such as weather conditions, lighting and shadows, and nonstandard road markings and textures, as well as usability issues in daily use. We discuss these real-world challenges and derive design implications for future AI-powered assistive AR systems for outdoor use.

原文摘要

Wireless digital twins enable network policies to be evaluated before deployment, but reproducing channel effects within a running protocol stack requires continuous waveform processing under strict timing constraints. We present MIRAGE, a GPU-accelerated channel emulator that applies propagation effects directly to in-phase and quadrature samples exchanged by software 5G New Radio stacks. MIRAGE combines batched multiuser, multiantenna filtering with timestamped shared-memory transport and radio-driver integrations for OpenAirInterface and OCUDU. External propagation models supply channel responses asynchronously, while versioned buffers ensure consistent coefficients within each processing interval. Experiments on one NVIDIA H100 GPU evaluate waveform accuracy, processing time, channel updates, and full-stack traffic delivery. At 61.44 million samples per second, eight single-antenna links, four two-by-two links, and one four-by-four link meet the tested 0.5 ms bidirectional processing criterion. Waveform errors remain within one integer quantization step per component, with no mixed coefficient versions across 16.7 million analyzed slots. Integration with the X5G testbed enables slice resource allocations to be evaluated before deployment. Both evaluated slices ultimately satisfy their throughput caps, requiring one physical reconfiguration under line-of-sight conditions and four under non-line-of-sight conditions. These results demonstrate full-stack policy evaluation and expose prediction errors affecting transfer to a physical network.

TrussTutor-Bench: Benchmarking large language models on solution accuracy, sycophancy, and error detection in statics

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) have rapidly become a default source of help for students in science and engineering courses. In foundational engineering mechanics courses such as statics, students routinely use these tools to check answers, work through partial solutions, and ask for explanations. Effective tutoring in this setting requires more than a correct final answer. A model must also confirm correct work when a student doubts it, and identify errors in flawed work. Existing benchmarks evaluate LLMs primarily on final-answer accuracy, so it is unclear whether models that can solve mechanics problems also have the other technical capabilities that tutoring depends on. Here we introduce TrussTutor-Bench, a benchmark of 200 verified two-dimensional truss problems paired with automatically generated student solutions, and use it to evaluate thirteen LLMs on solution accuracy, sycophancy, and error detection. Baseline accuracy ranged from 64.5% to 97.0%. Every model detected nearly all injected errors in synthetic flawed student work (90.4% to 100%), so error detection did not distinguish models under these clean conditions. Sycophancy did. When a student insisted that correct work was wrong, models rejected correct solutions to problems they had themselves solved in 1.6% to 50.0% of cases. These results show that performance varies widely across models: the leading models solve, check, and defend student work nearly perfectly, while others are far less reliable, particularly when a student doubts correct work. TrussTutor-Bench provides a verified, extensible standard for determining which models are technically reliable enough to put in front of students. Follow-up work must now focus on teaching rather than technical capability, drawing on learning science to determine whether LLM help leads students to understand the material or simply to reach the right answer.

Lev-3B: A Data Recipe for Compact Probabilistic Log Decision Models

原文摘要

Many log-analysis tasks involve choosing among known options, such as detecting anomalous sessions or identifying attack techniques, and benefit from calibrated probabilities. We present Lev-3B, an open 3B-parameter decision model built on Granite-4.1-3B-Base with a shared pointer readout, and study its training recipe. The recipe has two key parts. First, training follows a curriculum: the model learns bounded natural-language decisions, using no log data, before it sees any logs. Second, the log stage mixes the target tasks with general log data spanning 35 auxiliary tasks unrelated to either evaluation task. We evaluate one shared checkpoint on sources seen in training and on sources excluded from training, calibration and model selection. The two-stage recipe transfers substantially better than training on log data alone. Adding general log data improves performance on excluded sources. At a fraction of their serving cost, Lev-3B outperforms prompted frontier models on anomaly detection, including on an excluded logging system, but trails them on attack-technique classification. Its probabilities are well calibrated on familiar sources, but on the excluded logging system it confidently misses anomalies. We release the checkpoint, recipe, data manifests, and prediction-level artifacts.

DualGauge: Automated Joint Security-Functionality Benchmarking of Specification-Only Code Generation by LLMs and Coding Agents

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) and LLM-based coding agents are now used to generate code from natural-language specifications, yet ensuring such code is both functionally correct and secure remains a challenge. We present DualGauge, the first fully automated framework for jointly evaluating correctness and security of specification-only code generation, supported by DualGauge-Bench, a language-agnostic benchmark of 307 coding tasks each paired with functional and security tests derived from the same specification. Evaluating 10 representative LLMs across Python, C++, and JavaScript, we find that functional correctness substantially overestimates reliable code generation: even the strongest model remains below 15% joint security-functionality success in every language. Common model-side factors--scale, extended thinking, quantization, instruction tuning, and code specialization--do not reliably improve joint performance, suggesting secure-and-correct code generation does not simply emerge from stronger coding capability. Evaluation of 3 leading coding agents (Codex, OpenHands, and Claude Code) shows that iterative scaffolding is not a reliable remedy on specification-only tasks: results are strongly scaffold-dependent, with two of the three agents failing to outperform a comparable direct model. A qualitative audit reveals that these failures concentrate at the output contract boundary and in guards that exist but are insufficient--patterns that only joint benchmarking reliably exposes.

Maxwell's equations are universal for sparse linear algebra

Yannick Augenstein

原文摘要

Optical and wave-based analog computing has re-emerged as a route to accelerating linear algebra, with metamaterials and photonic circuits shown to invert matrices and solve integral equations. However, it has remained unclear which problems such passive structures can represent, and at what cost, once encoding, precision, conditioning and readout are accounted for. Here, we show that every polynomially conditioned sparse linear system can be compiled into a three-dimensional dielectric -- a cavity filled with lossless, isotropic material of bounded permittivity -- whose time-harmonic response encodes its solution. For $m$ nonzero coefficients, the volume of the structure and the cost of writing it down and reading out the answer scale as $\tilde O(m^{3/2})$, coefficients require only $O(\log m)$ bits, and every field that approximately satisfies Maxwell's equations decodes to an approximate solution. We prove the construction for the continuum equations and give a computer-assisted version for the Yee discretization underlying finite-difference solvers. Read in reverse, it implies that electromagnetic simulation is, up to this overhead, as hard as general sparse linear algebra: a sufficiently fast general-purpose Maxwell solver would yield a faster sparse linear solver.

MuQ-Eval: An Open-Source Per-Sample Quality Metric for AI Music Generation Evaluation

Di Zhu, Zihan Chen, Zixuan Li

原文摘要

Distributional metrics such as Fréchet Audio Distance cannot score individual music clips and correlate poorly with human judgments, while the only per-sample learned metric achieving high human correlation is closed-source. We introduce MUQ-EVAL, an open-source per-sample quality metric for AIgenerated music built by training lightweight prediction heads on frozen MuQ-310M features using MusicEval, a dataset of generated clips from 31 text-to-music systems with expert quality ratings. Our simplest model, frozen features with attention pooling and a two-layer MLP, achieves system-level SRCC = 0.957 and utterance-level SRCC = 0.838 with human mean opinion scores. A systematic ablation over training objectives and adaptation strategies shows that no addition meaningfully improves the frozen baseline, indicating that frozen MuQ representations already capture quality-relevant information. Encoder choice is the dominant design factor, outweighing all architectural and training decisions. LoRA-adapted models trained on as few as 150 clips already achieve usable correlation, enabling personalized quality evaluators from individual listener annotations. A controlled degradation analysis reveals selective sensitivity to signal-level artifacts but insensitivity to musical-structural distortions. Our metric, MUQ-EVAL, is fully open-source, outperforms existing open per-sample metrics, and runs in real time on a single consumer GPU. Code, model weights, and evaluation scripts are available at https://github.com/dgtql/MuQ-Eval.
