Edge-Assisted Crowdsensing for Explainable Cyclist Safety Perception

Hongsen Cao, Chia-Yen Chiang, Mona Jaber, Meihui Wang, Yasmin Fathy

Cyclist fatality rates remain high despite policy support for active travel, and autonomous vehicles add complexity to mixed traffic. Neither crash statistics nor multi-model detection pipelines scale to continuous monitoring of perceived safety along a route. We present an edge-assisted crowdsensing system: handlebar cameras supply street-level frames, a vision-language model (VLM) turns each frame into structured traffic attributes through a single prompt, and an explainable boosting machine (EBM) combines them with OpenStreetMap road infrastructure and on-bike kinematics to predict a crowdsourced 1-9 safety score. Extraction belongs at the network edge: the fastest self-hosted model needs 2.49 s per frame and scoring takes 0.4 ms on a CPU. On 1,362 annotated frames from two London routes, the EBM regressor reaches 72.2 percent binary accuracy and a mean absolute error of 1.011 under five-fold cross-validation. It is within one accuracy point of black-box ensembles. Its per-feature shape functions give exact attribution: physical lane separation is worth +0.97 rating points, a painted lane +0.70 and a construction site -0.65. Planners can therefore price an infrastructure change in rating points, and the results enter cost-benefit analysis directly. We also report inter-annotator agreement (alpha = 0.4695), an attribute audit, and a sensitivity analysis linking attribute error to accuracy. With re-encoding, a 20 s sampling interval serves 1,000 riders at 54 Mbit/s at a cost of 1.4 accuracy points, making continuous monitoring practical.

OraRefer: Segmentation-Guided Multi-Photograph Fusion for Oral Cancer Screening with Guaranteed Patient-Level Sensitivity

Rupam Mukherjee, Mehakdeep Singh, Shirin Dasgupta, Subhamoy Mandal

Oral cancer and the oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) that can precede it are visible on the oral mucosa, which makes smartphone photographs a promising tool for screening. Deep learning models for this task classify individual photographs. However, screening refers patients, not photographs: a patient is usually photographed several times, and the referral decision must miss no more than a set share of patients with disease. We propose OraRefer, a patient-level screening model that reads each photograph with a segmentation-guided foundation model that conditions its class decision on the predicted lesion, combines all photographs of a patient with risk factors, and refers through a threshold with a finite-sample sensitivity guarantee. The model localizes the mouth itself, so inference needs no annotation. On 3000 photographs of 714 patients, patient-level fusion reaches an AUROC of 0.919 and outperforms attention-based multiple-instance learning. At a 90% sensitivity target, OraRefer detects 95% of patients with OPMD or cancer and misses 3 of 61 patients with cancer, at a specificity of 0.610. Because the threshold is calibrated without retraining, each clinic can set its own guaranteed operating point on a local calibration sample.

CCMP: Class-Conditional Multicollinearity Pruning for High-Dimensional Feature Selection

Abdullah Al Bashit, Prakash Nepal, Lee Makowski

In high-dimensional scientific measurements, many features in a single sample often capture the same underlying physical attributes, producing severe multicollinearity. Supervised feature selectors fit on the entire dataset, so a feature can be informative for classification overall while still redundant with another feature in the same class. Class-conditional selectors, by contrast, trade some accuracy for a narrower, per-class view, since they never see data outside one class, but this lets new classes be added without refitting the whole model. They still cannot determine, however, which feature to drop from a correlated group. To close this gap, we propose classconditional multicollinearity pruning (CCMP), which iteratively prunes one feature from every highly correlated pair, per class. Four theoretical guarantees establish explicit bounds on the error induced by pruning under stated assumptions. Across four benchmark datasets spanning spectroscopic and hyperspectral imaging modalities, CCMP retains as few as 42 of 1531 features (3%) and as many as 60 of 145 (41%), outperforms every classconditional baseline, and remains competitive with supervised methods.

Interpretable Multimodal MRI-Clinical Fusion for Functional Outcome Prediction After Acute Ischemic Stroke

Sina Raeisadigh, Henning Müller, Abderrahmane Hedjoudje

This study evaluates the added prognostic value of day-1 multimodal MRI for predicting three-month functional outcome after acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Sixty-six AIS patients with ADC, DWI, FLAIR, and clinical data were analyzed. Three-dimensional pretrained ResNet embeddings were extracted from each MRI modality, reduced using fold-isolated principal component analysis, and combined with structured clinical variables and ADC-derived lesion biomarkers. Linear support vector machines were evaluated using eight-fold stratified group cross-validation across MRI modality combinations. Clinical-only modeling achieved strong performance (AUC = $0.899 \pm 0.151$), while MRI-only models showed limited discrimination (AUC $\approx$ $0.67$-$0.73$). Among multimodal configurations, FLAIR-clinical fusion achieved the highest mean cross-validated performance (AUC = $0.948 \pm 0.061$), followed by ADC-clinical fusion (AUC = $0.941 \pm 0.094$). Full ADC-DWI-FLAIR fusion did not consistently outperform single-modality clinical fusion. Feature-importance analysis identified age, NIHSS subscores, ADC lesion burden, and learned FLAIR representations as key contributors, while qualitative FLAIR activation maps showed responses over lesion-like regions. These findings suggest that compact day-1 FLAIR and ADC representations provide complementary prognostic information beyond clinical variables and support interpretable, data-efficient outcome prediction in AIS.

Streaming Persistent 3D Gaussian Proxies for View-Flexible Remote Rendering

Matti Siekkinen, Teemu Kämäräinen, Ahmad Alhilal

Cloud rendering executes demanding real-time graphics on a remote server, but conventional video transmission constrains the displayed image to the server-rendered viewpoint. Image-space warping can compensate for client motion during transport and display latency, although its accuracy decreases with pose offset. We investigate an alternative approach in which the server constructs a persistent, client-renderable 3D Gaussian proxy online from game-engine render buffers and progressively transmits independently renderable spatial tiles. Our Unity prototype supports continuous optimization and expansion, approximate relighting, and engine-tracked rigid-object motion, while the client renders locally from its current viewpoint. We evaluate four scenes under controlled pose offsets and encoded walkthroughs, comparing the proxy with stale server-rendered frames, depth-assisted warping using HEVC with one, three, or five reference views. The proxy maintains stable quality as pose offset increases. At 50 Mbit/s, it achieves higher SSIM than all evaluated warping configurations at 367 ms on all four scenes and at 183 ms on three of the four scenes. The results identify complementary operating regimes: image warping is effective at small pose offsets, conventional video is rate-efficient when only the server-rendered viewpoint is required, while the persistent proxy provides robust viewpoint flexibility when the original renderer cannot be executed at the client.

RPL-UIE: Reference-Guided Prior Learning for Content-Preserving Underwater Image Enhancement

Yifan Chen, Jijun Lu, Ye Zheng, Kaichen Chi, Zhe Sun, Tao Chen

Underwater image enhancement (UIE) aims to recover clear images from observations degraded by wavelength-dependent absorption, scattering, and spatially nonuniform degradation. Although existing generative methods can handle complex degradations, they may still generate visually appealing results while compromising content preservation, thereby degrading downstream visual perception. To improve content preservation, we extract spatial priors characterizing appearance and photometric properties from ground-truth images to provide stable guidance for enhancement. To bridge the gap between training with ground-truth references and inference without references, we propose reference-guided prior learning for underwater image enhancement (RPL-UIE), a two-stage teacher-student framework. The teacher network extracts stable priors from ground-truth images, while the student network takes only degraded images as input and learns to mimic the teacher's prior extraction capability. We further design Residual Prior Refinement Diffusion (RPRD) and Frequency-Aware Prior Residual Calibration (FPRC) to reduce the prior discrepancy between the teacher and student. RPRD progressively predicts corrections in the residual space, while FPRC preserves stable low-frequency residuals and selectively modulates high-frequency details. Experiments on multiple underwater image datasets show that RPL-UIE achieves competitive enhancement performance. For the engineering application of underwater visual perception, downstream object detection and instance segmentation experiments show that RPL-UIE improves visual quality while better preserving object structures and semantic content needed for reliable perception. Tests on real-world data collected by a custom-built remotely operated vehicle (ROV) further demonstrate its effectiveness and practical applicability.

AI 速览:作者开发了面向胎儿超声心动图的帧级心脏视图与图像质量标注工具CAT,并与电子表格标注进行对比,报告其减少数据录入错误并提高标注效率。

Objective: To develop the Cardiologist Annotation Tool (CAT) for frame-level cardiac view and image-quality annotation in fetal echocardiography and compare it with spreadsheet-based annotation. Methods: CAT provides cine playback, frame navigation, and keyboard-based labeling without manual frame-range entry. Experts annotated 25 studies using both methods, and spreadsheet annotations were audited for predefined data-entry errors. In a randomized crossover study, six medical students annotated two normal studies, one with each method, against an expert reference. Results: Among 1,746 spreadsheet-annotated files, 6.2% contained major or critical data-entry errors, more frequently in congenital heart disease than normal studies (10.9% vs 3.4%). CAT yielded more annotated view segments per clip (3.6 vs 1.5). Rates of labeled and correctly labeled frames per minute were 1.77 and 1.68 times those with spreadsheets, respectively (both P = 0.031), with gains in all six students. No detectable difference in view-label accuracy was observed. Conclusion: CAT eliminates manual frame-range entry and enables finer-grained, structured annotation of fetal echocardiography, providing a practical approach to preparing datasets for AI research.

Learning Optimal Lattice Vector Quantizers for End-to-end Neural Image Compression

Xi Zhang, Xiaolin Wu

It is customary to deploy uniform scalar quantization in the end-to-end optimized Neural image compression methods, instead of more powerful vector quantization, due to the high complexity of the latter. Lattice vector quantization (LVQ), on the other hand, presents a compelling alternative, which can exploit inter-feature dependencies more effectively while keeping computational efficiency almost the same as scalar quantization. However, traditional LVQ structures are designed/optimized for uniform source distributions, hence nonadaptive and suboptimal for real source distributions of latent code space for Neural image compression tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel learning method to overcome this weakness by designing the rate-distortion optimal lattice vector quantization (OLVQ) codebooks with respect to the sample statistics of the latent features to be compressed. By being able to better fit the LVQ structures to any given latent sample distribution, the proposed OLVQ method improves the rate-distortion performances of the existing quantization schemes in neural image compression significantly, while retaining the amenability of uniform scalar quantization. Code is available at: https://github.com/xzhang9308/OLVQ.

TOP: Transmission-Oriented Remote Sensing Pansharpening

Zi-Han Cao, Jing-Ze Liang, Shao-Jie Wu, Jin-Cheng Di, Liang-Jian Deng, Gemine Vivone

Pansharpening has been extensively studied as a fundamental image fusion task in remote sensing. However, most existing methods focus on improving fusion quality under the implicit assumption that high-resolution observations have already been fully downlinked to the ground. As a result, existing models are highly vulnerable to perturbations introduced by lossy compression used for downlink transmission. To address this limitation, we present, to the best of our knowledge, the first transmission oriented pansharpening (TOP) framework, which unifies compact latent coding, onboard pansharpening, and efficient downlink transmission within a single satellite-toground pipeline. TOP encodes remote-sensing observations into a compact binary latent space, where a lightweight onboard fusion module can efficiently predict the fused binary latent code. Since only the compact fused code is downlinked, the transmission payload is substantially reduced. Overall, TOP enables low-payload downlink and lightweight onboard processing while maintaining high fusion quality under severe bandwidth constraints. Experiments across multispectral and hyperspectral settings show that TOP consistently achieves superior fusion quality at higher compression ratios than representative pansharpening methods paired with standard lossy codecs. For example, on GaoFen-2, TOP attains a fusion PSNR of 31.4 dB at a downlink compression ratio of 50x. This design also points toward transmissionoriented processing for other remote-sensing tasks. The code will be made available at https://github.com/JingZe-Liang/TOP.git.

Entity-Aware Evaluation of OCR Systems for Historical Document Transcription

Camilo Mariño, Diego Belzarena, Marina Gardella, Ignacio Ramírez, Gregory Randall, Jean-Michel Morel

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is essential for digitizing historical archives, yet standard evaluation metrics such as Character Error Rate (CER) do not necessarily reflect whether meaningful information, such as names, dates, and identifiers, is preserved. In this work, we investigate entitylevel analysis of OCR errors as a complementary perspective for evaluating OCR quality in historical documents. Using a publicly available benchmark of 175 documents from the Berrutti Archive, augmented with 5,209 manually annotated entity mentions that will be released upon acceptance, we compare sequence-recognition OCR systems, OCR-specialized vision-language models, and general-purpose vision-language models. Beyond global transcription accuracy, we analyze entity preservation and recoverability under varying character-level edit tolerances. Our experiments show that OCR rankings depend on the evaluation criterion: while Qwen 3.6 achieves the highest entity coverage across all tested tolerances, several systems with lower exact-match coverage recover substantially when small errors are tolerated, suggesting that many of their errors correspond to localized character-level deviations rather than fundamentally incorrect entity transcriptions. Conversely, some systems remain unable to recover many entities even under relaxed matching. These findings show that OCR quality cannot be fully characterized by aggregate transcription metrics alone and highlight the importance of evaluating how OCR errors affect the preservation and recoverability of meaningful information.

PixCon: Clean-Positive Contrastive Learning for Foundation-Model Semi-Supervised Segmentation

Ebenezer Tarubinga

Can a simple labeled-pixel contrastive branch improve semi-supervised segmentation with a strong pretrained encoder? We study this question with PixCon, which adds a class-wise memory bank to a DINOv2-Base implementation of UniMatch V2. The bank stores ground-truth-labeled features only where the student prediction agrees with the label. A multi-positive contrastive loss uses these features to train the shared encoder-decoder; the head and bank are discarded at inference. This simplifies earlier labeled-pixel banks by removing confidence thresholds and learned ranking. On Pascal VOC with 183 labels, PixCon improves all three paired seeds by 0.20, 0.64 and 1.83 mIoU points, raising the mean from 87.01 to 87.90. With 92 labels the mean gain is 0.40 points; single-seed differences on Cityscapes and ADE20K range from -0.08 to +0.14 points. A predicted-label contrastive control reaches nearly the same Pascal accuracy, so these results support the added branch rather than an accuracy benefit from its correctness filter. An exact gradient decomposition distinguishes mislabeled-positive counts from their similarity-weighted influence. Separate teacher diagnostics find retained-pixel error rates of 1.8% on Pascal and 10.6% on ADE20K. These diagnostics do not measure the training bank or predict final accuracy. PixCon adds 15.3-19.7% iteration time in the measured runs and no inference computation. We report paired seeds, training cost and the limits of the evidence.

Dual Flow: Joint Image-Measurement Flow for Inverse Problems

Sevket Ege Yesilyurt, Figen S. Oktem

Existing generative model-based approaches to linear inverse problems typically use the acquired noisy measurement to condition or guide sampling in the image domain. In this work, we introduce Dual Flow, a novel joint flow model for solving linear inverse problems by jointly estimating the clean image and its corresponding noise-free measurement from the observation. Specifically, Dual Flow formulates image reconstruction and measurement denoising as a coupled estimation problem, using coupled flows in the image and measurement domains. The acquired noisy measurement $\mathbf{y}_0$ is used only to initialize the measurement state; thereafter, the image and measurement states are jointly updated based on their current values. By construction, the final image and measurement estimates are guaranteed to satisfy the underlying forward model. We derive the sampling updates for the joint flow and show that they are governed by the conditional mean of the clean image given the current joint state. We further derive a closed-form expression for a sufficient statistic of the joint state and show that the required conditional mean can be obtained by solving an image-domain Gaussian denoising problem involving operator-dependent, correlated noise. We train a velocity-prediction network using this formulation to estimate the conditional mean from the derived sufficient statistic. Dual Flow requires no hyperparameter tuning beyond selecting the number of inference steps and achieves substantially shorter reconstruction times than competing methods. Extensive experiments across various linear inverse problems and image datasets demonstrate state-of-the-art performance in both distortion metrics and perceptual quality. Additional analyses assess robustness to model mismatch, as well as the ability to generate diverse plausible reconstructions and characterize reconstruction uncertainty.

Scalable Neural Video Representation Compression

Tianhao Peng, Ho Man Kwan, Fan Zhang, Shan Liu, David Bull

Scalable video coding (SVC) encodes a video into a layered bitstream of a base layer and one or more enhancement layers, enabling decoding at different bitrate/quality/resolution operating points for diverse devices and network conditions. SVC has been incorporated into major video coding standards and has recently attracted growing interest for both scene-agnostic and scene-adaptive neural video codecs. Among the latter, implicit neural representation (INR) based codecs overfit a compact neural network to an individual video, offering fast decoding and competitive coding efficiency. However, research on scalable INR-based compression remains in its infancy: existing methods introduce additional network layers, which couple the bitrate with the decoding complexity and cannot match strong scalable/non-scalable codecs. This paper proposes S-NVRC, a scalable INR-based video codec that jointly supports fine-grained bitrate and decoding complexity scalability from a single embedded bitstream. It adopts a coarse-to-fine prefix for feature grids and a nested prefix for network layers, which scale bitrate and decoding complexity, respectively. With a single encoding, S-NVRC spans a wide range of bitrate and decoding complexity and outperforms SHM-12.4 and the multi-layer VTM-20.0 by 43.7% and 5.6% in BD-rate on the UVG dataset.

When can multi-fragment 2D/3D registration be trusted? Calibrated certification and uncertainty-driven view planning for pelvic fracture fluoroscopy

Bowen Xiang, Michael I. Miga

Registering a segmented CT to fluoroscopy can locate every fracture fragment but can guide surgery only when trusted. After each shot, our closed loop registers all fragments, bounds their errors with a calibrated sandwich covariance, flags implausible or ambiguous ones, and stops or plans the next view. On simulated fluoroscopy of 60 held-out fracture CTs with realistic image uncertainty, 95% bounds covered 83% of unflagged fragments and 91% of those within 5mm, but from the second view on 14% failed by over 5mm, a third with bounds of at most 2mm. A fragment's shift when a view was added separated tightly bounded failures best (exploratory; AUC 0.94, bound 0.81). Requiring that the newest view moved no fragment beyond its bound, preferred post hoc, lowered false stops at 2mm from 23% to 6% overall, with 345 instead of 362 correct ones but more trajectories uncertified; delaying the stop did not, and other signals at equal acceptance left 10-15% false. With a segmentation error shared by all views (median Dice 0.89), 21% of this rule's stops were false against 10% without it (15 cases; exploratory). Minimax planning certified sooner than the clinical protocol without the check (4.20 versus 4.72 shots, Holm p <0.001), but no criterion reached the pre-specified endpoint, a true 2mm error, significantly sooner, even in the true basin. On real fluoroscopy of five intact pelves no 2mm certificate was false. Trust takes evidence across views, not only a calibrated local bound.

AI 速览:作者构建了覆盖七中心、764例患者的胰腺囊肿MRI公开基准,并提供分割与IPMN风险预测的参考AI模型及联邦学习模拟结果。

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) are pancreatic cancer precursors, and guideline-based risk stratification both over-treats indolent lesions and misses progression. We present Cyst-X, a public benchmark of 1,461 T1-weighted (T1W) and T2-weighted (T2W) MRI volumes from 764 patients at seven centers, with expert pancreas masks, risk labels, splits and reference AI risk-prediction models. PanSegNet segmented the pancreas with Dice of 86.34% (T1W) and 89.26% (T2W) on held-out centers. For the primary task, high-risk versus low-risk IPMN, a 3D DenseNet-121 achieved cross-validated AUCs of 74.59% and 73.45%; complementary broad binary and three-class tasks reached 78.67--81.28% and 73.47--75.76%. Because patient images often cannot be pooled across institutions, we also simulated federated learning across the seven centers. On T2W MRI, FedProx was similar to centralized training in center-averaged external AUC (71.00% versus 71.18%) but not in pooled AUC (62.35% versus 77.49%). Radiologist comparisons showed cohort-dependent sensitivity--specificity tradeoffs. Cyst-X supports reproducible method development and identifies within-IPMN risk discrimination and cross-center score comparability as open challenges.

Label-Preserving Fourier Domain Adaptation with Generative-AI and Real Style Donors for 3D Mitral Valve Segmentation

Javeria Javed, Ahmed Salim, Muhammad Mahboob Ur Rahman

Accurate segmentation of the mitral valve from three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (3D TEE) is severely restricted by the scarcity of publicly available expert- annotated volumetric datasets. To address this critical limitation, we investigated Fourier Domain Adaptation (FDA), utilizing general-purpose generative-AI images (from platforms like Chat- GPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft MAI) as annotation-free style donors for 3D mitral valve segmentation. We employed a DeepMitral residual U-Net model on the public MVSeg2023 dataset, comparing six conditions over three runs: real-only training, traditional augmentation, FDA with each generative source, and a non-AI FDA control using real-image style donors, plus an optimization-matched real-only control and a \b{eta} sensitivity analysis. Case-level paired testing showed that FDA with these generative sources led to significant reductions in boundary- and surface-related errors across all three donor conditions relative to the primary real-only baseline. However, the impact on the core segmentation metric, Generalized Dice Score (GDS), proved generator-dependent. ChatGPT-FDA showed a significant GDS advantage over the optimization-matched control but not over the primary baseline, and Gemini-FDA showed no significant GDS difference. Notably, only MAI-FDA provided a statistically robust and significant increase in GDS compared to the primary baseline. The \b{eta} sensitivity was not robust across training runs. These findings confirm that FDA remains an important augmentation mechanism. While generative-AI images offer a practical means of acquiring style diversity without new annotations, the non-AI control performed comparably to ChatGPT-FDA, so we do not conclude that this approach is superior to training with real-image donors.

Can saliency maps flag chest radiograph classifier errors at a new hospital? An external validation study

Aashish Chapagai, Angad Singh Gurtatta, Erik Cambria

Saliency maps are offered as a safeguard for medical image classifiers, but whether they reveal individual errors at a new hospital remains largely untested. We trained a convolutional network and a vision transformer on NIH ChestX-ray14 and evaluated 303,768 decisions per model at the training hospital and at two external sites, in the USA and Vietnam, with radiologist-consensus labels. We scored each explanation by its anatomical enrichment, the area-normalized concentration of attribution in a segmented thoracic region, and tested whether it detects errors beyond the model's confidence. Grad-CAM localized findings less often than radiologists (hit rate at most 0.575 versus 0.888). Adding enrichment to a confidence-based error detector calibrated at the training hospital never raised its area under the curve by more than 0.011, and for the convolutional network the relation between enrichment and correctness reversed between hospitals, degrading the transferred detector. Model confidence, not saliency, should anchor deployment monitoring.

Forecasting Brain Tracer Distribution from Pre-Contrast MRI: A Comparison of Direct Regression and Flow Matching

Qinghui Liu, Jon André Ottesen, Thu Nguyen, Geir Ringstad, Ingrid Mossige, Siri Fløgstad Svensson, Sissel Riis Kalstad, Atle Bjørnerud 等 10 位作者

The brain fluid clearance system can be studied with intrathecal contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). By injecting a tracer into the spinal canal and performing MRI over 24--48\,h, one can measure how a tracer injected into the cerebrospinal fluid spreads through the brain. As this is an invasive procedure requiring several MRI scans, we ask how much of the later tracer distribution can be predicted from the pre-contrast scan and elapsed time alone. Using 104 training patients (878 MRI volumes), we compared a direct image-to-image regression model with a more complex generative model based on conditional flow matching, and tested both on 23 held-out patients and on 51 patients from a separate cohort with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). Relative to simply copying the pre-contrast scan, the direct model reduced the mean absolute error (intensities normalized to $[0,1]$) from 0.089 to 0.036, about 60\%, in held-out patients and from 0.075 to 0.056, about 25\%, in the iNPH cohort. The reduction held in every sampled elapsed-time interval and brain compartment, and errors remained largest at 20--30\,h and in the ventricles, where enhancement is strongest. Its predicted change maps agreed with the observed tracer enhancement rather than only reproducing anatomy. The generative model was less accurate in both cohorts. A substantial part of the later tracer distribution is therefore predictable from the patient's brain anatomy as seen on pre-contrast MRI, and the added model complexity gave no benefit at this data scale. Whether this accuracy suffices for a given clinical use remains to be established; with prospective validation, such forecasts could help simplify the MRI protocol used to assess brain clearance.

Adaptive Local Frequency Filtering for Fourier-Encoded Implicit Neural Representations

Ligen Shi, Jun Qiu, Zengyu Pang, Yuhang Zheng, Lina Wu, Di He, Chang Liu

Implicit neural representations (INRs) commonly employ Fourier features to alleviate spectral bias and represent high-frequency signals. Fourier encodings, however, use the same frequency representation across spatial locations despite the spatially varying frequency content of natural signals. We propose Adaptive Frequency Implicit Neural Representation (AFINR), a spatially adaptive frequency-conditioning framework for Fourier encoded INRs. A sampling compatible Fourier dictionary first defines the explicit frequency support, and a learnable spatial control field then modulates the admitted Fourier components before decoding. The control field is parameterized in the discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain to provide a compact and continuously queryable spatial representation. AFINR can be combined with different coordinate decoders, including ReLU, SIREN, CAFE, and CAFE+. Experiments on Kodak and DIV2K show consistent average improvements across these decoder families. In particular, AFINR-CAFE+ improves CAFE+ by 3.95 dB on Kodak and 3.50 dB on DIV2K. Ablation studies characterize the effects of adaptive-field parameterization, DCT coefficient retention, and frequency-response parameters, while learned spatial responses show position-dependent use of the admitted Fourier components.

Sparse-View 3D Coronary Reconstruction from Vessel Segmentations Using a Diffusion Prior

Tianyuan Wang, Kenan Niu, Stefano Stramigioli

Reconstructing three-dimensional (3D) coronary anatomy from sparse angiographic views could support percutaneous coronary intervention, but limited angular coverage and imperfect vessel segmentations introduce substantial geometric ambiguity. We propose a vessel-specific reconstruction framework combining a learned 3D diffusion prior, visual-hull initialization, and projection-based data consistency. The unconditional diffusion model is trained on coronary vessel masks without paired 2D--3D data and reused across different view counts without retraining. During inference, a scaled visual hull initializes reconstruction, while projection-based updates constrain diffusion refinement using patient-specific vessel observations. We evaluated the framework on simulated angiograms derived from ImageCAS computed tomography angiography volumes using two, four, and eight views at two contrast levels. Across 50 evaluation coronary-tree cases, the proposed method achieved higher mean Dice and clDice than visual hull, deep image prior (DIP), and hash-grid implicit neural representation (INR) at all view counts under reduced contrast. With eight views, improvements over DIP, the best-performing baseline at lower contrast, were approximately 0.13 in Dice and 0.22 in clDice. At higher contrast, performance remained competitive with hash-grid INR, the best-performing eight-view baseline. The preferred diffusion starting timestep depended on observation quality and view count, with excessive refinement reducing accuracy at higher contrast. Projection guidance improved both metrics across all conditions. Averaging stochastic reconstructions further improved accuracy, while sample disagreement localized errors with average-precision gains of 0.14--0.21 over error prevalence. These findings support diffusion-prior reconstruction from sparse vessel observations, although clinical validation remains necessary.

Beyond Visibility: Real-Time Surface Accessibility Fields from Sparse LiDAR

Bradley Scott, Sam Schofield, Richard Green

Understanding which surfaces a given tool can physically access is fundamental to robotic interaction, yet 3D perception typically stops at geometric reconstruction or visibility estimation. Visibility does not imply accessibility: a visible point may still be blocked by tool geometry or approach-corridor clearance. We propose the Accessibility Field: a per-point surface accessibility labelling, computed from streaming sparse LiDAR and updated at sensor rate as the platform moves. Our GPU-based method evaluates surface points against precomputed tool-geometry kernels across rotated approach orientations, underpinned by a scan-centric TSDF integration scheme suited to non-repetitive sensors such as the Livox Mid-360. The system is tool-agnostic, requires no prior scene model, and runs in real time on both workstation and Jetson Orin edge hardware. On synthetic primitives, our method achieves F1=90.8%, against 69.8% for a Hidden Point Removal baseline; ablations within our own pipeline give 81.5% replacing the TSDF query with a point-cloud collision check, and 33.9% replacing scan-centric integration with projective, nvblox-style integration. On a mature synthetic Pinus radiata model, the method labels 56.8% of visible pine branch surfaces as physically inaccessible.

FlatLands: Indoor floormap completion from a single egocentric view

Subhransu S. Bhattacharjee, Dylan Campbell, Rahul Shome

A single egocentric image typically captures only a small portion of the floor, yet a complete metric traversability map of the surroundings would better serve applications such as indoor navigation. We introduce FlatLands, a dataset and benchmark for single-view indoor floor-map completion in metric bird's-eye view (BEV), evaluating eleven models: both deterministic and generative. FlatLands contain 270,575 observations from 17,656 scene records across six metric 3D datasets, with aligned observation, visibility, validity, and ground-truth maps and both in- and out-of-distribution protocols. We compare training-free, deterministic, ensemble, and generative methods on shared geometry-derived inputs and, without fine-tuning, on maps estimated from real egocentric RGB images. Our results show that predicting floor almost everywhere can achieve high IoU when most evaluated cells are floor, while generative sample sets outperform the best single-output model under a proper scoring rule and support safer risk-weighted planning. FlatLands establishes a rigorous testbed for evaluating both floor-map accuracy and how effectively alternative completions represent the ambiguity of unseen space.

DUNEDepth: Bronchoscopic Depth and Pose Estimation via Hybrid Adaptation of a 3D-Vision Foundation Model

Qi Chang, Austin Kao, Ange Lou, William E. Higgins

State-of-the-art bronchoscopy guidance systems and computer-aided diagnosis methods have emerged as important tools for early lung cancer detection. Effective use of these tools depends on being able to accurately link a patient's bronchoscopic airway exam video to their pre-operative 3D chest CT scan. Unfortunately, the derivation of such links, which include bronchoscope depth and camera motion, from the exam video remains an open problem. Building on recently proposed 3D-vision foundation models, we propose DUNEDepth, a hybrid architecture that combines a shared DUNE ViT encoder, a twin MASt3R cross-attention decoder structure, and a prediction head that includes elements of the MASt3R and Reloc3r models. To fine-tune the architecture to our application, we utilize an integrated hybrid synthetic-supervised/self-supervised training strategy that draws on both bronchoscopic video and CT-derived virtual bronchoscopic views. Experiments drawing on bronchoscopic video sequences demonstrate that DUNEDepth more accurately derives depth information and camera motion trajectories than previously proposed self-supervised methods.

Evaluating the Impact of Nonlinear Registration on Longitudinal PET Analysis in a Rodent Stroke Model

Haytham Ziani, El Mostafa Kalmoun, Zohaib Atif, Hyuk-Sang Kwon

Longitudinal rodent positron emission tomography (PET) studies of stroke and neuromodulation rely on accurate registration to a common atlas space to detect group-level effects. Prior work applying ultra-high frequency low-intensity magnetic stimulation (UHF-LiMS) to a rat model of chronic capsule infarct used affine normalization to a Sprague Dawley MRI template without evaluating that choice. We compare a two-stage (affine and nonlinear) pipeline against an affine- only one for rat PET-to-atlas alignment on the same dataset. Across 32 longitudinal [18F]-FDG PET scans (8 rats, 4 timepoints), the nonlinear stage gave a higher Dice similarity coefficient on every scan, and the gain was significant at the rat level. Jacobian determinants showed no folding on the sampling grid. Group-level linear mixed-effects maps of change from baseline (AFNI 3dLME), computed identically under both pipelines, differ in the size, number and location of their suprathreshold clusters. In this dataset, the registration pipeline is therefore a variable that can change the interpretation of downstream group-level analyses.

Measure Before You Repair: An Explainable Agent for Blind Restoration of Multi-Artifact 3-D MRI

Necati Sefercioglu, Mehmet Ozan Unal, Metin Ertas, Altan Cakir, Isa Yildirim

A brain MRI scan can carry an unknown mix of artifacts, so restoration has to be blind, yet most deep-learning methods are built to correct one known artifact. We present Dx-Rx, an agent in which a multimodal large language model (MLLM) measures suspected artifacts before it repairs them. To our knowledge, it is the first agent to restore whole 3-D MRI volumes, whereas earlier MRI agents restore 2-D slices. In a loop, it looks at slices of the 3-D volume, calls five diagnostic tools (noise, spike, ghosting, bias field, motion) and four restoration tools in any order it chooses, checks each repair, can return to any earlier version to change the order, and ends with a radiology-style report of its diagnostic reasons, the repairs it applied and their results. We simulated up to five artifacts on 148 whole 3-D T1-weighted volumes, at levels calibrated to radiologists' grades of real scans. An MLLM that only looked at the image, as earlier MRI agents do, removed at most 19.7 % of the artifact error. With the best of five MLLMs, Dx-Rx removed a mean 64.5 %, nearly matching the 64.6 % of the same tools given the ground-truth artifacts, which are never known for a clinical scan. With all five models, it made no volume worse and was on par with or better than an expert rule-based pipeline built from the same tools (62.3 %). Code and demo are public at https://itu-biai.github.io/measure-before-you-repair.

A Novel Conditional Adversarial Diffusion Model for High-Fidelity OCT-to-OCT Image Translation and Precise Anti-VEGF Therapy Response Prediction in Diabetic Macular Edema

Reza Rasti, Armin Biglari, Sobhan Mohammadi Hafshejani, Alireza Dehghani, Michael J. Allingham, Sina Farsiu

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a leading cause of severe vision loss among working-age adults. Although intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections currently serve as the first-line therapy for DME, a notable subset of patients fails to respond despite the substantial cost and clinical burden, suggesting they may benefit more from alternative interventions. Automated, noninvasive pre-treatment response assessment could therefore spare non-responders from the current trial-and-error treatment paradigm. In this study, we propose a novel conditional adversarial diffusion framework that synthesizes post-treatment optical coherence tomography (OCT) images from baseline scans, enabling the derivation of each patient's initial response to anti-VEGF therapy. The model was developed with subject-level 5-fold cross-validation on a US cohort (n = 127) and externally validated on an independent Iranian cohort (n = 44). Benchmarked against fourteen baseline and state-of-the-art translation models, the proposed model achieved the best treatment-response prediction performance among the methods evaluated for that task on both cohorts, with balanced accuracies of 85.7% and 93.0% on the US cohort and 85.2% and 95.3% on the external Iranian cohort at the 10% and 20% central subfield thickness reduction thresholds, respectively. Ultimately, this framework offers a decision-support tool to help ophthalmologists anticipate initial anti-VEGF outcomes in DME prior to treatment initiation, toward personalized therapy selection. The source code will be made publicly available upon acceptance.

HIVE-Diff: High Frame Rate HDR Video Reconstruction from a Single LDR Frame and Events

Caixin Wang, Qingrui Wang, Jie Zhang, Ralph Etienne-Cummings

High frame rate HDR video is important in applications such as autonomous driving and scientific imaging, where rapid motion and extreme illumination often occur simultaneously. Conventional frame cameras face a trade-off between temporal resolution and dynamic range, while event cameras provide complementary high-speed brightness-change measurements over a wide illumination range. These properties have motivated event-based HDR reconstruction, with existing methods broadly following event-only and hybrid event-frame paradigms. Event-only HDR reconstruction, however, suffers from brightness and color drift due to the lack of absolute intensity references. Hybrid event-frame methods alleviate this ambiguity using low-dynamic-range (LDR) frames as anchors, but most perform one-to-one HDR reconstruction at available LDR timestamps. In this work, we investigate single-reference HDR temporal expansion, reconstructing N HDR frames from one LDR reference and events instead of N aligned LDR observations. We develop HIVE-Diff, an event-conditioned video diffusion framework that decomposes the task into event-guided temporal generation and HDR content completion. Because paired real HDR-event data are scarce, we train on synthetic data and adapt the model to real event domains using LDR-event sequences as proxy supervision with teacher-student distillation. Experiments on synthetic and multiple real-world datasets demonstrate strong reconstruction quality and robust real-data adaptation.

Programmable Silicon Retina on Pixel Processor Array

Maciej Lewandowski, Prince Philip, Alexandre Marcireau, Chetan Singh Thakur, André van Schaik, Piotr Dudek

Standard dynamic vision sensors approximate retinal processing by detecting temporal contrast changes, offering high speed and high dynamic range. In this work, we explore whether incorporating additional biologically inspired processing stages - specifically spatial filtering and gain control - can offer advantages for certain downstream tasks such as saliency prediction. We present the first implementation of a multi-stage Silicon Retina model on the SCAMP-5 Pixel Processor Array, along with a GPU-based simulation framework. We evaluate the performance of our model on Video Intensity Reconstruction and Video Saliency Prediction. While the bio-inspired model is less effective at reconstructing absolute intensity frames, it achieves a 13\% reduction in saliency prediction loss in comparison to standard DVS event representation, while reducing the event rate by approximately 47\%. These experiments are obtained using a lightweight $\approx 100$k-parameter FireNet-style network, adapted from event-based reconstruction to saliency prediction. These results suggest that the silicon retina's "information distillation" mechanism can achieve a more efficient representation for downstream neural networks, particularly in bandwidth-constrained edge applications.

Scaling global tractography with ExaTract: from large cohorts to ultra-high-resolution datasets

Simon Legeay, Felix Matuschke, Bastien Herlin, Jan André Reuter, Christophe Destrieux, Markus Axer, Ivy Uszynski, Cyril Poupon

Global tractography offers a theoretical framework for reconstructing white matter connectivity from diffusion MRI by jointly inferring all streamlines and their consistency with the diffusion signal and underlying anatomical priors. However, its sequential nature and log-linear complexity make it computationally prohibitive at the scales demanded by neuroimaging, from large population cohorts such as the Human Connectome Project (HCP) to ex vivo ultra-high-field acquisitions at mesoscopic resolution. In this work, we present ExaTract, a parallelized spin-glass tractography framework designed for high-performance computing (HPC) architectures. Implemented as an open-source MPI+Kokkos application, ExaTract partitions the tractography domain into spatially overlapping regions processed across distributed memory nodes, with regular synchronization of boundary modifications to preserve global convergence guarantees. We validate ExaTract on both in vivo and ex vivo diffusion MRI data: the complete HCP dataset demonstrates population-scale throughput, while the high-resolution Chenonceau dataset provides the first mesoscopic structural connectome derived from global tractography.

Progressive Multi-Scale Super-Resolution via Cascaded Bicubic Anchors and Inter-Scale Mutual Refinement

Chun-An Lin, Yu-Chia Chang, Chi-Mao Fan, Yen-Chieh Ouyang, Tsung-Jung Liu

Super-resolution networks are trained for one magnification factor, so several output resolutions require several models. We propose PMS-SR, a progressive single-input multiple-output network that produces x2, x4, and x8 results in one forward pass, with a Transformer backbone on the low-resolution grid. In Stage 1, each scale is predicted as a residual over the detached bicubic upsampling of the previous scale's prediction. With Dirac and zero initialization, training starts exactly from the bicubic cascade, and each head adds only the band the previous scale lacks. In Stage 2, inter-scale mutual refinement couples the scales in both directions through space-to-depth feedback, deformable alignment, and per-pixel fusion, so x8 features refine the x2 output. Trained on DF2K, the 7.95M-parameter model achieves a higher PSNR than every compared multi-scale method at x4 and x8 on all five standard benchmarks. At x8, it outperforms the x8-specific DRN-L on all of them, leads all compared methods on Urban100, and is within 0.13 dB of the best result elsewhere. Against three single-scale SwinIR-M models, PMS-SR uses 22% of the parameters, runs 2.9x faster on BSD100 inputs, and its outputs agree 6.7-12.4 dB more closely. Code and pretrained models will be released at https://github.com/julian135707/PMS-SR upon acceptance.
