Sign Language Recognition and Translation for Low-Resource Languages: Challenges and Pathways Forward

Nigar Alishzade, Gulchin Abdullayeva

原文摘要

Sign languages are natural, visual-gestural languages used by Deaf communities worldwide. Over 300 distinct sign languages remain severely low-resource due to limited documentation, sparse datasets, and insufficient computational tools. This systematic review synthesizes literature on sign language recognition and translation for under-resourced languages, using Azerbaijan Sign Language (AzSL) as a case study. Analysis of global initiatives extracts eight actionable lessons, including community co-design, dialectal diversity capture, and privacy-preserving pose-based representations. Turkic sign languages (Kazakh, Turkish, Azerbaijani) receive special attention, as linguistic proximity enables effective transfer learning. We propose three paradigm shifts: from architecture-centric to data-centric AI, from signer-independent to signer-adaptive systems, and from reference-based to task-specific evaluation metrics. A technical roadmap for AzSL leverages lightweight MediaPipe-based architectures, community-validated annotations, and offline-first deployment. Progress requires sustained interdisciplinary collaboration centered on Deaf communities to ensure cultural authenticity, ethical governance, and practical communication benefit.

MapHub: Daily Relevance Heatmaps of New arXiv Preprints for a Research Community

Kaili Cao, Camille Avestruz, Feige Wang

原文摘要

MapHub, the MIDAS arXiv Preprint Hub, assesses each day's new arXiv submissions for every participant in a research community, with a large language model reading each paper against portfolios built for the participants. It publishes the relevance scores, from 0 to 100, as a heatmap that shows whose work each paper touches. In the authors' blind ratings, the top 10\% of papers by MapHub's scores held about 70\% of the raters' own top 5\%, pooled, against about a third for a text-matching baseline. About 6\% of a day's astro-ph papers reach 30 for each participant, and one every three days reaches 60. MapHub runs on a standard Claude subscription and is designed to be useful for any field: https://github.com/kailicao/maphub-public.

How Far Can Chord-Symbol Time-Series Adaptation Carry Genre Identity? Capabilities and Boundaries in Multi-Genre Chord-Symbol Modeling

Jinju Lee

原文摘要

This report treats chord-symbol sequences as an interpretable, controllable time series for genre-local harmonic modeling. The frozen Music Transformer base is weight-identical to a pop-dominated Phase-0 baseline. I adapt it to eleven target genres: blues, bossa nova, Bach chorales, country, electronic, folk, funk, gospel, hip-hop, R&B/soul, and rock. The main grid compares LoRA, IA3, BitFit, prefix tuning, and full fine-tuning over 11 genres and 3 seeds (165 cells). All five methods improve over the frozen base on held-out chord prediction (macro gains +2.89 to +3.61 percentage points). Top-1 also scores the three header tokens of each sequence, which move whole runs: only a matched adapter predicts its genre marker, and whether a run predicts the placeholder C-major key of every Chordonomicon song is close to arbitrary. Without the header tokens the macro gains are +1.64 to +2.38 pp, and outside Bach chorales LoRA, IA3, prefix tuning, and full fine-tuning give the same gain (+1.30 to +1.34 pp). That gain reflects a handicap of the frozen base, which for every target but rock reads a genre marker it never read in training: given the pop marker instead, it comes within 0.12 pp of the released matched adapter in every non-chorale genre. Wrong-genre adapters beat the frozen base only where it reads such a marker, and outside Bach chorales the matched adapter's edge over the best wrong one is within 0.2 pp. Only on Bach chorales does adaptation add clearly more (+9.6 pp for LoRA over the base given the pop marker). Further diagnostics (rank sweeps, matched-size and same-weights controls, chord-only classification, real songs) support a bounded conclusion: for genres the base already covers, chord-symbol adaptation mainly supplies a usable genre marker, and chord symbols alone do not carry complete genre identity. Perceived genre authenticity is left to controlled listener evaluation.

ShapleyOG: Fast Adaptive Shapley Value Estimation with Odd Gaussian Processes

David Rundel, R. Teal Witter, Santo M. A. R. Thies, Matthias Feurer, Fabian Fumagalli, Bernd Bischl

原文摘要

Shapley values are a central tool for attribution in machine learning. Since their exact computation requires evaluating the cooperative game to be explained on exponentially many player coalitions, they are typically estimated from a limited number of evaluations. Recently, ShaplEIG has shown that adaptively selecting the coalitions to evaluate substantially improves sample efficiency over classical estimators. This, however, comes at the cost of a sequential procedure that, in every iteration, refits a Gaussian process surrogate of the game and selects the coalition with the largest expected information gain about the Shapley values. The resulting computational overhead limits its applicability to costly games with low evaluation budgets. We present fast adaptive Shapley value estimation with Odd Gaussian Processes (ShapleyOG) to overcome this limitation. ShapleyOG leverages the fact that Shapley values depend only on the odd component of the game, and we show that under paired sampling a Gaussian process surrogate on this component alone yields the same Shapley value posterior and coalition selection criterion from half as many observations. Moreover, ShapleyOG refits the surrogate only on a sparse schedule and efficiently updates the selection criterion in between, and it extends quadrature-based computation schemes to the prior covariance of the Shapley values, which allows for exact or cheaper approximate computation. In extensive experiments on diverse games, ShapleyOG matches the estimation accuracy of ShaplEIG while reducing its overhead by up to three orders of magnitude. As a result, it outperforms state-of-the-art non-adaptive estimators at equal total computation time already when a single evaluation takes a tenth of a second and a budget of a few thousand evaluations suffices, thereby widening the regime in which adaptive coalition selection is applicable and pays off.

Tight Generalization Bounds for Noiseless Inverse Optimization

Pouria Fatemi, Hoomaan Maskan, Suvrit Sra, Peyman Mohajerin Esfahani

原文摘要

Inverse optimization (IO) seeks to infer the parameters of a decision-maker's objective from observed context--action data. We study noiseless IO, where demonstrations are generated by a ground-truth objective. We provide a high-probability ${O}(\frac{d}{T})$ generalization bound for the induced action set, where $d$ is the number of unknown parameters and $T$ is the size of the training dataset. We strengthen this guarantee under additional conditions that ensure uniqueness of the chosen action, bringing our IO guarantees in line with best-arm identification results in the bandit literature. We further show that the ${O}(\frac{d}{T})$ rate is tight over all consistent estimators considered here, and extend the result to both instantaneous and cumulative regret. Notably, the resulting regret lower bound matches the corresponding upper bounds in the adversarial setting, indicating that the stochastic IO setting is effectively adversarial for the class of estimators studied here. Finally, we propose a parameter-free algorithm with lower per-iteration complexity than generic solvers. Experiments validate the predicted rates and illustrate the tightness of our bounds.

SEABench: Benchmarking Endogenous Misalignment In Self-Evolving Agents

Saswat Das, Parvati Viswanathan, Daniel Donnelly, Chang Huang, Sahar Abdelnabi, Ferdinando Fioretto

原文摘要

Self-evolving LLM agents have gained prominence for their ability to improve after deployment by modifying their harness, including their controller instructions, memory management protocols, and reusable tools and skills, in response to user and environment feedback. However, locally useful updates may persist into later tasks where they produce unsafe behavior, even without direct adversarial influence. To study this risk, we introduce SEABench, a benchmark for studying endogenous misalignment arising from agent self-evolution, with 48 longitudinal task sequences that span multiple evolution surfaces, task domains, and harm types in a rich personal-assistant environment. To account for the stochasticity inherent in agentic operations, we provide an adaptive trajectory discovery pipeline that probes for failures while preserving original task intent and supports causal attribution through paired non-evolving agents and attribution scores. Our evaluation across multiple recent LLMs, evolution surfaces, and harm types reveals that self-evolution indeed increases task completion rates but often at the cost of safety failures that are absent for paired non-evolving baseline agents. We also show that qualitatively different safety behaviors emerge across evolution surfaces and harm types. Further, we show that this divergence in safety behavior is reflected in agents' chain-of-thought reasoning, which yields an effective monitoring strategy that can mitigate unsafe behavior with a low false positive rate.

Position: Agentic Evolution is the Path to Evolving LLMs

Minhua Lin, Hanqing Lu, Zhan Shi, Bing He, Rui Mao, Zhiwei Zhang, Zongyu Wu, Xianfeng Tang 等 15 位作者

原文摘要

As Large Language Models (LLMs) move from curated training sets into open-ended real-world environments, a fundamental limitation emerges: static training cannot keep pace with continual deployment environment change. Scaling training-time and inference-time compute improves static capability but does not close this train-deploy gap. We argue that addressing this limitation requires a new scaling axis-evolution. Existing deployment-time adaptation methods, whether parametric fine-tuning or heuristic memory accumulation, lack the strategic agency needed to diagnose failures and produce durable improvements. Our position is that agentic evolution represents the inevitable future of LLM adaptation, elevating evolution itself from a fixed pipeline to an autonomous evolver agent. We instantiate this vision in a general framework, A-Evolve, which treats deployment-time improvement as a deliberate, goal-directed optimization process over persistent system state. We further propose the evolution-scaling hypothesis: the capacity for adaptation scales with the compute allocated to evolution, positioning agentic evolution as a scalable path toward sustained, open-ended adaptation in the real world. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/A-EVO-Lab/a-evolve.

Meta-Frieren: Beyond Single Level Online Learning

Vahan Arsenyan, Arnak Dalalyan

原文摘要

We study a two-stage online optimization problem: at each round, a meta-learner first selects an agent-environment pair, then the chosen agent interacts with the environment, and receives a reward. We introduce Meta-Frieren, a general framework for maximizing cumulative reward in this setting. Our analysis yields a simple UCB-style criterion for meta-level selection and recovers prior guarantees as special cases while extending them to broader settings. We instantiate Meta-Frieren with GP-UCB under Bayesian and frequentist assumptions. We also derive, to our knowledge, the first high-probability regret bound for Feel-Good Thompson Sampling, specialize it to finite and parametric function classes, and integrate it into Meta-Frieren. Experiments support our theoretical results and demonstrate that Meta-Frieren can be successfully applied to hyperparameter optimization across multiple model classes.

Multi-step SWE: Can Coding Agents Keep Building on Their Own Code Over Long Horizons?

Xiangkai Zeng, Zheng Liu, Zihao Lin

原文摘要

Developers rarely give a coding agent a single request: they ask it to build a component and then to extend, upgrade, and optimize it, each time on code the agent itself wrote. Most benchmarks, however, score one task at a time. We introduce Multi-step SWE, a long-horizon benchmark of 69 software engineering tasks, each a chain of 5-15 dependent steps on a single codebase. Every step is a complete, multi-hour engineering request that starts from the code the agent produced in the preceding steps, so early design decisions and errors carry forward. The tasks span four families of engineering work and nine languages, include both from-scratch builds and existing open-source codebases, and ground every step in an existing source of truth that defines both the instruction and its verifier. Across nine frontier models, the strongest model reaches a solve rate of only 18.5%, and 38 of the 69 tasks are not solved by any model. We release Multi-step SWE publicly at https://multistepswe.com.

Structural Conditional Independence Test via Neural Quantile Resolution

Khoa Nguyen, Bao Duong, Thin Nguyen

原文摘要

Conditional independence testing is difficult when dependence is weak, localized, or expressed through distributional changes rather than a global mean shift. Existing tests usually return a scalar statistic or p-value, which summarizes evidence against independence but does not describe where the conditional law changes. We propose QRCIT, a quantile-resolution conditional independence test that compares P(X|Z) and P(X|Y,Z) through a quantile deformation learned by a shared model. A lightweight residual quantile-flow model first learns the baseline conditional quantile law and then learns the additional deformation induced by Y, yielding a global predictive-gain statistic with conditional-randomization calibration and an inspectable deformation field over context and quantile level. We also introduce the Structural Dependency Benchmark (SDB), which evaluates dependence structures motivated by real applications, such as context-local, tail-only, sign-reversing, moving-ridge, and mean-neutral patterns. Across synthetic post-nonlinear (PNL) and SDB benchmarks, QRCIT improves detection of structured alternatives, with empirical Type-I behavior evaluated across settings. Higher quantile resolution improves merged-SDB power at moderate sample sizes, while diagnostics restricted to known affected regions improve detection of localized dependence. On Sachs, METABRIC breast cancer, and CCLE/PLX4720, QRCIT provides competitive real-data performance and interpretable deformation patterns. These results support quantile-resolved conditional-law deformation as a practical framework for testing and diagnosing structured conditional dependence.

Distributed Geometric Optimization and Control of Rigid Differential-Drive Formations from Relative-Position Measurements

Thanacha Choopojcharoen, Erman Selim, Ramisha Anjum, Baris Fidan

原文摘要

Distance based formation control fixes the shape of a robot team but leaves its position and orientation unconstrained. We regulate all three for differential drive robots that have only one absolute position anchor, absolute headings, body frame relative position measurements, and communication with their neighbors. We derive a two layer estimation control scheme directly from optimization. The first half of the result is a set of graph-proximal estimators that reconstruct the centroid, the anchor vector, and the centered coordinates. Exact proximal updates reach consensus in finitely many steps, and a finite number of primal dual iterations leaves a bounded reconstruction error. The controller combines proximal centroid and orientation steps with distance gradient shape regulation, and a finite rotation removes the orientation drift caused by the shape step. A discrete Lyapunov analysis gives local exponential convergence once the estimators have converged. We validate the method in ROS 2 Gazebo and in experiments with five physical robots.

A Survey of Nonlinear Filtering Methods for Data Assimilation and Recent Advances in Generative AI-Enabled Score Filters

Cath Pham, Kadesha Reynolds

原文摘要

Many real-world applications, such as numerical weather prediction or wildfire tracking, involve modeling highly nonlinear dynamical systems that are chaotic and influenced by various sources of uncertainty. To improve model prediction accuracy and reduce such uncertainties, data assimilation (DA) combines the dynamical model with partial, noisy observations to estimate the evolution of the system's state. Doing so depends on solving the optimal filtering problem: computing the conditional distribution of a hidden state given a sequence of observations. Classical approaches fail along three distinct axes: Kalman-based methods assume Gaussian posteriors and produce biased estimates under nonlinear observation operators; particle-based methods represent distributions with weighted samples and collapse in high dimensions due to the curse of dimensionality; and kernel-based methods move beyond discrete particle representations but cannot maintain their density approximation affordably as dimension grows. The Ensemble Score Filter (EnSF) avoids all three constraints by encoding the filtering density in a score function and approximating that score with a training-free Monte Carlo estimator, enabling stable filtering in high-dimensional, chaotic systems. This survey traces EnSF's mathematical foundations, establishes it as the state of the art for non-Gaussian, high-dimensional filtering, and examines fourteen extensions that expand its operational reach. Twelve of the fourteen extensions preserve this training-free Monte Carlo estimator at the core of the update, with only two departing from it to achieve planetary-scale deployment.

Where Generated Floor Plans Stop: Calibrated Sample-Level Checks Against a Built Baseline

Yiliang Shao

原文摘要

Floor plan generators are judged mainly by Compatibility, a graph edit distance to the requested adjacencies that is near saturation and blind to room shape. Our sample-level protocol calibrates each threshold no standard states at a declared false-rejection rate on real samples and grades them with the same checks. It reports each sample at its first failure, counts samples without a verdict apart, and attributes a stop to the generator or to its representation where a control exists. We apply it, with a production layout solver's checks, to four published generators against two built corpora, RPLAN and Modified Swiss Dwellings (MSD). A squareness check set per room type refuses 5 per cent of RPLAN apartments and 33.7 per cent of House-GAN++ plans. The gap survives resolution, tracing and orientation controls. Pooled over rooms, a Wasserstein distance on squareness orders the generators nearly as the check does but separates House-GAN++ from the built corpora by far less. Taken per plan on the check's worst-room margin, it separates them about fivefold to sevenfold. Within the GAN generators, Compatibility barely predicts which plans pass. We release the checker, which reproduces the solver's first failing check on 3,998 held-out RPLAN plans.

LAMP: Look-Ahead Mixed-Precision Inference of Large Language Models

Stanislav Budzinskiy, Marian Gloser, Tolunay Yilmaz, Ying Hong Tham, Yuanyi Lin, Wenyi Fang, Fan Wu, Philipp Petersen

原文摘要

Mixed-precision computations are a hallmark of the current stage of AI, driving the progress in large language models towards efficient, locally deployable solutions. This article addresses the floating-point computation of compositionally-rich functions, concentrating on transformer inference. Based on the rounding error analysis of a composition $f(g(\mathrm{x}))$, we provide an adaptive strategy that selects a small subset of components of $g(\mathrm{x})$ to be computed more accurately while all other computations can be carried out with lower accuracy. We then explain how this strategy can be applied to different compositions within a transformer and illustrate its overall effect on transformer inference. We study the effectiveness of this algorithm numerically on GPT-2 models and demonstrate that already very low recomputation rates allow for improvements of up to two orders of magnitude in accuracy.

Depth or Description? When a One-Step Latent Score Replaces Lookahead in Proactive Information Acquisition

Biswa Sengupta

原文摘要

A proactive agent must decide what to ask before it acts. Exact lookahead values combinations of questions but is expensive and leans on a fitted model; a one-step score is cheap but can miss them. Our main finding: the need for depth often lies in how the hidden cause is described. A one-step score on the label can be blind to an interaction among answers. A score on a suitable latent cause is not, and where that latent encodes the decision it replaces most of depth at a fraction of the search. Described differently, the same problem can defeat the score while exact values do not move, so keep the latent small and check it against exact values. Probabilities learned from one language model's answers do not carry to another unless planning allows for both; those read from tokens are worth only a few labels.

LatentGym: A Testbed For Cross-Task Experiential Learning With Controllable Latent Structure

Daksh Mittal, Tommaso Castellani, Thomson Yen, Naimeng Ye, Minghui Chen, Tiffany Cai, William Zeng, Emmanouil Koukoumidis 等 10 位作者

原文摘要

We envision continually learning agentic systems that become more useful over time: as they encounter sequences of related tasks, they should infer the hidden structure shared across those tasks and use it to improve future decisions. This cross-task experiential learning capability is pivotal in domains such as personalization and interactive assistance, but existing training/evaluation frameworks do not provide shared, controllable latent structures and cannot measure whether or why agents improve. We introduce LatentGym: a controllable suite in which each environment is organized around a ground-truth latent variable governing the structure across tasks. Our construction yields metrics that separate exploration (whether the agent's actions gather information about the latent) from exploitation (whether the agent uses what it has gathered). We demonstrate our suite on empirical studies addressing three questions: how and why frontier models fail to adapt across related tasks; whether post-training on related task sequences improves general cross-task adaptation, and where those gains come from; and how design choices such as inter-task feedback shape training dynamics and generalization. Together, these results establish a controlled foundation for studying how LLM agents learn from experience across tasks, and for designing agents that adapt more reliably in sequential, personalized, and interactive settings.

Human Responses to Algorithmic Correction: Evidence from Centre Court

David Almog, Romain Gauriot, Lionel Page, Daniel Martin

原文摘要

We study how algorithmic review changes error composition using Hawk-Eye records from professional tennis. Within 20 mm of the line, mistaken "in" call rates increase by 8.6 percentage points, while mistaken "out" call rates decrease by 4.1 points. Within matches, calls shift toward avoiding previously overturned errors. We find no evidence that initial accuracy deteriorates within 100 mm of the line, despite concerns that workers may rely on correction as a safety net. We derive an investment framework incorporating human responses alongside correction benefits and remedy costs, showing that holding human decisions fixed can misstate the organizational returns to review.

FastAFD: When Does Attention-FFN Disaggregation Pay on Rack-Scale NVLink?

Yichao Fu, Yuxuan Zhang, Minshen Zhang, Ruitian Wang, Junda Chen, Hao Zhang

原文摘要

Attention-FFN disaggregation (AFD) separates attention from the experts of a mixture-of-experts (MoE) model and has been reported to raise decode throughput over colocated serving. Whether this advantage holds on rack-scale NVLink systems such as GB200 NVL72 remains unclear: prior results were obtained on other hardware, against narrower colocated baselines, or with analytical models, whereas production engines serve large MoE models on these systems with wide expert parallelism (wide EP). We build and tune FastAFD, an AFD engine for GB200 NVL72 that overlaps the MoE of one microbatch with the attention of the other, and compare it against the best vLLM wide EP setting. Experiments show that AFD has a throughput advantage of up to 1.17x over wide EP on Qwen3 and 1.16x on Qwen3.5, and matches it on MiniMax-M2.5. We derive an analytical model that predicts AFD throughput within 3% using only profiles of colocated vLLM, telling whether switching to AFD would pay off before deploying it. The model yields a concise insight: AFD's speedup factors into a batch gain (larger batches, since attention GPUs hold no expert weights), an overlap gain (shorter steps, since the MoE runs on the expert GPUs behind attention), and a disaggregation cost (the GPUs given to experts). AFD has the advantage when the two gains outweigh the cost. This view explains which models benefit from AFD, and shows that speculative decoding helps light-expert models most, where the enlarged overlap gain outweighs the larger disaggregation cost and adds a further 8% to AFD's advantage over wide EP. Looking ahead, serving the experts on accelerators that keep their weights in on-chip SRAM, such as the Groq LPX accelerators paired with Vera Rubin NVL72, would remove most of the disaggregation cost, raising the ideal speedup to 2.48x with speculative decoding. FastAFD is open source at https://github.com/hao-ai-lab/FastAFD.

FLASH: A "Generate Once, Synthesize Many" Framework for Synthetic Anomaly Generation in Industrial Anomaly Detection

Abhay Kumar Das, Rajesh Gangireddy, Ashwin Vaidya, Samet Akcay

原文摘要

Synthetic anomaly generation helps expand industrial anomaly datasets when real defects are scarce or unavailable. Existing approaches lie at two extremes: procedural approaches are fast but struggle to represent complex anomalies, while generative approaches produce diverse defects but require costly per-sample generation. We present FLASH, a framework that decouples defect generation from anomaly synthesis under a ``generate once, synthesize many'' paradigm. Given only normal images, FLASH uses Vision-Language Model (VLM) guidance and an image-generation model to produce a small set of defect images, from which it extracts, validates, and banks reusable defect patches. For synthesis of anomalous images, Object Boundary Suppression (OBS) first identifies the probable foreground object-aware region of the host image, while Multi-Resolution Spectral Pyramid (MRSP) noise generates diverse, size-controllable masks that determine the defect location and spatial extent. It then composes a large and diverse synthetic anomalous image set by localizing the defect region, sampling size-controllable placement masks and seamlessly blending retrieved defects onto new defect-free images without further need for image generation. Experiments on the MVTec AD 2 dataset show that FLASH-generated anomalies nearly close the calibration gap on real defects, reaching 78.1% image-level F1 against an 83.6% real-anomaly upper bound and providing the most consistent calibration transfer across detectors among procedural and generative alternatives. Moreover, FLASH synthesizes anomalies more than 11.95x faster than per-sample generative approaches.

Hybrid Approach for Enhancing Lesion Segmentation in Fundus Images

Mohammadmahdi Eshragh, Emad A. Mohammed, Behrouz Far, Ezekiel Weis, Carol L Shields, Sandor R Ferenczy, Trafford Crump

原文摘要

Choroidal nevi (CN) are common benign fundus lesions that require longitudinal monitoring because a small fraction transform into melanoma. Accurate delineation at native resolution is challenging: CN typically occupy <2% of the image, boundaries are indistinct, and expert annotations are limited. We propose a hybrid pipeline in which an unmodified UNet trained on 128 * 128 images provides a coarse location prior, while a training-free superpixel method (SLIC) recovers the boundary at the full input resolution. The prior further drives automatic per-image selection of the superpixel count via an image-to-lesion ratio, eliminating manual tuning. On 25 held-out 1024 * 1024 images, the proposed method achieved a mean Dice of 90.9% (IoU 87.9%), outperforming nnU-Net (83.2%), Swin UNet (73.0%), and Attention UNet (60.6%) trained at the same resolution, with all paired differences significant after Holm correction. On 90 external images from a second centre, the advantage persisted (76.8% vs. 69.3% for nnU-Net). Ablation studies identify the automated superpixel count as the key component. Inference needs no GPU, requiring 1.6 s per 1024 * 1024 image and 15 s at 3900 * 3900 on a laptop.

Perceptual Distortion for Overfitted Video Coding: Sliced Matching in Space, Error Alignment in Time

Tianyi Yang, Ge Gao, Fan Zhang, David Bull

原文摘要

Recent works in neural video coding have increasingly been trading off perceptual quality against reconstruction fidelity at a fixed bitrate. Wasserstein Distortion (WD) offers a principled approach to balancing these objectives by relaxing spatial correspondences in feature matching, enabling lightweight overfitted image codecs to compete with computationally intensive generative decoders. Extending vanilla WD to video, however, presents two challenges: its independent Gaussian approximation limits the expressiveness of feature distribution matching, while unconstrained texture resampling across frames introduces temporal inconsistencies. We address these challenges by distinguishing between the correspondences that can be relaxed and those that must be preserved. Spatially, we introduce a local sliced Wasserstein distortion (SWD) that matches empirical feature distributions through one-dimensional optimal transport, capturing cross-channel dependencies without enforcing exact spatial alignment. Temporally, we employ a novel flow residual that constrains coding errors along motion trajectories, preserving temporal consistency without imposing additional reconstruction fidelity constraints. Evaluated on UVG and HEVC Class B with the overfitted codec COOL-CHIC, our framework achieves BD-rate reductions of 9.2% in DISTS and 3.0% in LPIPS relative to frame-wise WD, averaged over test sequences, while lowering tOF by 10.2% at matched rate.

Oracle-Robust Online Alignment for Large Language Models

Zimeng Li, Mudit Gaur, Vaneet Aggarwal

原文摘要

We study online alignment of large language models under misspecified preference feedback, where the observed preference oracle deviates from an ideal but unknown ground-truth oracle. The online LLM alignment problem is a bi-level reinforcement problem due to the coupling between data collection and policy updates. Recently, the problem has been reduced to a tractable single-level objective in the SAIL (Self-Improving Efficient Online Alignment) framework. In this paper, we introduce a pointwise oracle uncertainty set in this problem and formulate an oracle-robust online alignment objective as a worst-case optimization problem. For log-linear policies, we show that this robust objective admits an exact closed-form decomposition into the original loss function plus an explicit sensitivity penalty. In the finite-response log-linear setting, we develop projected stochastic composite updates for the resulting weakly convex objective and prove $\widetilde{O}(\varepsilon^{-2})$ oracle complexity for reaching approximate stationarity.

FADE: Factored Ability--Difficulty Filtering for Online RLVR Scheduling

Tomas Duncun, Jonah Ellison, Mateo Ruiz, Hanae Fujita, Ingrid Solberg

原文摘要

Group-based reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR) learns only from prompts whose sampled completions disagree: all-pass and all-fail groups produce zero relative advantage and burn generation budget without moving the policy. Adaptive schedulers try to steer rollouts toward informative prompts, yet they rely on per-prompt pass-rate trackers that entangle two quantities evolving at very different speeds---the policy's shifting competence across reasoning skills and each prompt's intrinsic difficulty. When a single exponential average or Beta counter tracks both at once, short memory scrambles the relative ordering of prompts whereas long memory reports stale pass rates. We introduce FADE (Factored Ability--Difficulty Estimation), a bilinear state-space filter that separates the two timescales. FADE represents each prompt's success logit as the inner product of a whitened $K$-dimensional skill loading with a fast-drifting policy ability vector, minus a slow-shrinking scalar item intercept. Using Pólya--Gamma augmentation, each minibatch of binary rollout outcomes updates the $K$-dimensional ability posterior in closed form via a rank-$K$ Woodbury step, instantly transferring competence shifts to all unobserved prompts that share those skills while leaving item intercepts stable. From the resulting posterior mean and variance we derive a closed-form utility for the probability of drawing a non-degenerate rollout group. Across five reasoning benchmarks, two base models, and four scheduling paradigms under a matched rollout budget, FADE consistently improves downstream accuracy and calibration while adding less than $0.6$\,ms per step.

PeptSol: A Translational Benchmark for Protected-Peptide Solubility in Drug Manufacturing

Alexander Arjun Lobo, Marc Saouda, Urvi Awasthi, Leonid Zhukov

原文摘要

Liquid-phase peptide synthesis (LPPS) offers a scalable route to peptide manufacturing, but route development still depends on empirical solvent screens because each protected intermediate must be soluble for reaction and recoverable for purification. The protecting groups, terminal modifications, and noncanonical residues that govern this behaviour are poorly represented in existing peptide property benchmarks, limiting the ability to develop and rigorously evaluate molecular representation models for LPPS-relevant prediction tasks. We introduce PeptSol, an open benchmark of 1388 hand-curated protected-peptide solubility measurements with chemistry-aware splits. The measurements span only 84 parent sequences and 101 protected structures, and 92.5% come from a single historical programme. Across seven frozen molecular encoders, the best macro-F1 is 0.843 on binary solubility for the historical subset under a peptide-held-out split; the harder three-class ordinal task reaches 0.614 in that cell. No foundation model consistently outperforms a baseline combining chemical fingerprints with explicit molecular descriptors, and model rankings vary across prediction tasks and data splits. The dataset, evaluation protocol, and baselines establish a standard for measuring progress on molecular representations for synthesis-aware peptide developability.

More Agents, More Reliable? System-Level Reliability of Multi-Agent LLMs under Operational-Profile Uncertainty

Burkay Tunçtürk, Koorosh Aslansefat, Yiannis Papadopoulos, Bao Nguyen

原文摘要

Teams increasingly build software from cooperating large language model (LLM) agents, often assuming more agents mean more reliability. Yet the usual evidence, average benchmark accuracy, ignores the input mix a deployed system meets and the rule merging the agents' answers. Building on HIP-LLM, a hierarchical imprecise-probability assessment of single LLMs, we propose a framework combining it with a Bayesian network of the system's failure logic for multi-agent systems. Agent failure-probability intervals propagate through this network, where the combining rule can itself fail, into a reliability envelope showing which evidence limits it. In a pipeline extracting regulated chemical-hazard statements, majority voting over three models protected against the weakest but did not clearly exceed the best, and a voter failing on 5\% of demands would largely erase its advantage over the middle model. More agents yield a more defensible reliability claim, not automatically a more reliable system.

Two Uncertainties Are Not One: Disagreement versus Decision-Risk in Cheap Structured Content Moderation

Karan Yadav

原文摘要

Content moderation compresses a graded, contested human judgment into a binary act (leave up / take down) over billions of items, at a scale where running a frontier LLM on every post is uneconomical. A new class of frozen "System One" models returns typed, calibrated decisions instead of text at ~USD 0.000025 per call and ~100 ms. We run the first independent audit of one such model on 142,658 human-labeled comments, and benchmark it against 14 frontier reasoning models (the GPT-5.x, Claude, Gemini 3, and Grok families) on a shared probe set. Two findings stand out. First, the cheap model is accuracy-competitive: its zero-shot classification AUROC (0.83) is not statistically separable (paired bootstrap, n=56; a failure to reject parity, not proof of equivalence) from 13 of the 14 frontier systems while costing 1-3 orders of magnitude less, and it is no worse calibrated than several of them. Second, "confidence" conflates two uncertainties that come apart: human disagreement (where annotators split on satire and coded language) and decision risk (where the automatic action is costly-wrong). Under an asymmetric moderation loss these call for opposite escalation signals, so no single confidence number serves both. Because the model prices extra questions at nearly zero, decomposing the judgment into parallel sub-questions and reading their spread recovers a human-disagreement signal that the model's native confidence misses -- but this remedy is specific: it helps the weakest, disagreement-blind models and only when the decomposition aligns with the sources of disagreement; a specialist toxicity model and the strongest LLMs do not need it, and the effect is distribution-sensitive. We will release the instrument, the cached runs, and the analysis.

Murmur: Efficient Long-Context ASR Inference with Hierarchical Chunking

Wei-Tzu Lee, Keisuke Kamahori, Baris Kasikci

原文摘要

Long-form automatic speech recognition (ASR) requires both high accuracy and low inference latency, but existing systems fall short of handling the trade-off between the two. Chunk-based approaches process audio in parallel windows for low latency, but lose cross-chunk context and need brittle heuristics to align speakers and timestamps at boundaries. Long-context ASR models transcribe everything in a single pass for better accuracy, but run several times slower, and a single repetition loop can corrupt the entire output. In this paper, we first analyze how context length affects the accuracy of long-context ASR models and find that an intermediate chunk size of about five minutes matches single-pass accuracy while avoiding repetition loops. Building on this, we propose Murmur, an inference system for long-form ASR based on hierarchical chunking. The long-context model decodes intermediate target chunks in parallel, and a fast short-window ASR on 30 s draft windows accelerates each chunk with lossless, structure-aware speculative decoding. The short-window ASR drafts the transcript, simple format rules draft the timestamps and speaker tags, and the long-context model verifies every token. On two long-context ASR models and four meeting datasets in English and Mandarin, Murmur cuts end-to-end latency per recording by 2.5x on average (1.9-2.9x) relative to single-pass decoding, including diarization, while lowering tcpWER by 1.9 points on average. Our code is available at https://github.com/uw-syfi/Murmur.

DenseReward: Dense Reward Learning via Failure Synthesis for Robotic Manipulation

原文摘要

Reinforcement learning holds great promise for improving robot policies beyond the limits of imitation learning. However, its practical adoption remains bottlenecked by the lack of reliable vision-language reward models that provide dense and informative feedback. Two key challenges remain: acquiring diverse failure data at scale and obtaining fine-grained reward signals beyond sparse trajectory-level success labels. Existing approaches reuse successful trajectories to construct negative or suboptimal examples through trajectory truncation, instruction relabeling, or trajectory comparisons, without generating new trajectories where physical interaction failures such as collisions, missed grasps, object drops, and recovery actually occur. Meanwhile, many existing reward models predict sparse binary or trajectory-level rewards, which provide limited guidance for efficient policy optimization. We introduce DenseReward, a dense robotic reward model that addresses both challenges. To train DenseReward, we develop an automated failure data generation pipeline that synthesizes physically realistic failure trajectories in simulation without manual annotation, covering diverse failure modes such as collisions, missed grasps, object drops, and recovery behaviors. DenseReward predicts dense frame-level reward scores from visual observations and language instructions, enabling fine-grained estimation of task progress throughout an episode. Experiments show that DenseReward outperforms general-purpose VLMs and existing robotic reward models in dense reward prediction across both simulated and real-world manipulation. We further demonstrate that DenseReward provides effective reward guidance for downstream model predictive control and reinforcement learning.

Matriarchy Classics: A Computational Approach to Swap Only Gendered Words in Classic Novels

Rachel Lea Draelos

原文摘要

This paper proposes a trustworthy computational method to gender-swap public domain novels, with programmatic guarantees that only gendered words are inverted and all other words are left unchanged. This may seem like a simple task, but both large language models and naive rule-based methods fail to complete it. The proposed method includes a custom whitespace-preserving tokenizer, gender-swap mappings across plural and possessive forms, pronoun handling, and a character renaming strategy. It shortens the time required to gender-swap a novel from weeks of manual labor to minutes. The method is demonstrated on two public-domain novels. Pride and Prejudice is transported to matriarchal Regency England, where inheritance flows through daughters, mothers rule the household, and a frantic Mr. Bennet is determined to secure advantageous marriages for his sons. The Great Gatsby pivots to a matriarchal Jazz Age where newly-rich Ms. Gatsbee throws lavish parties in the hopes of reuniting with her lost love, David, who is now married to the violent Thelma Buchanan. Gender-swapped novels could serve as useful tools to investigate the gender biases of readers, authors, societies, and AI systems.

Context-Aware Automated NMR Structure Elucidation

原文摘要

Machine learning approaches are rapidly revolutionizing the ability to analyze and extract structural insights from chemical data, enabling high-throughput chemical discovery. While existing data-driven approaches have shown remarkable promise for predicting chemical structures in the de novo setting, incorporating additional chemically informed context offers the opportunity to further improve these models' performance and extend their real-world utility. Here we provide a straightforward protocol to combine artificial-intelligence-based spectroscopic elucidation pipelines with contextual chemical data, e.g., known reactants or a desired product, by using automated retrosynthetic analysis to generate large training sets of molecules and contextual data in the form of synthetic precursors. We demonstrate our approach by showing that our recently introduced NMR structure elucidation framework can be trained to effectively leverage molecular precursor context. We show that when the chemical context provides useful information on the target molecule we obtain dramatically improved accuracy over using NMR spectra alone, obtaining Top-15 accuracies of up to 95.4% for molecules up to 40 heavy atoms spanning the full elemental range of organic chemistry. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our approach is highly robust, such that even when the context provided is uncorrelated with the target, one still obtains accuracies commensurate with those of the original NMR structure elucidation framework. This approach provides an efficient route to improve a wide range of spectroscopic structure elucidation platforms using contextual data.
