Cooperative Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning with Submodular Trajectory Rewards

Yasaman Zolfimoselo, Nikolas Geroliminis, Maryam Kamgarpour

原文摘要

We study cooperative multi-agent reinforcement learning with decoupled dynamics and a monotone submodular reward function over joint trajectories. Due to the non-additive reward, an optimal policy may depend on the history of all agents. This dependence makes exact optimization exponential in the horizon and the number of agents. To overcome this challenge while retaining theoretical guarantees, we introduce pre-window curvature $c_m$, which quantifies how states visited more than $m$ steps earlier reduce current marginal gains. Using this curvature to control the error from restricting the policy of each agent to depend only on its last $m+1$ states, we propose a greedy algorithm that exploits the decoupled dynamics to optimize local policies sequentially. For fixed $m$, the algorithm achieves a $\frac{1-c_m}{2-c_m}$ approximation guarantee up to estimation error, and its computation time is polynomial in the number of agents and the horizon. We recover the known $1/2$-factor approximation for time-additive rewards and obtain an approximation factor no smaller than the known total-curvature bound for a single agent. We formulate multi-agent traffic monitoring as an example of this framework and evaluate our algorithm on it.

NIF: Normal-Intersection Fields for Geometrically Consistent Oriented Box Refinement

Shaokai Zheng

原文摘要

Accurate oriented detection requires boxes to follow object boundaries, yet small errors in the coupled center, size, and angle estimates can displace long boundaries even when an object is correctly classified. We propose NIF, a plug-in refinement branch that represents box geometry with normal-intersection fields. Given a coarse oriented box, it samples local features at 20 boundary anchors and predicts signed distances along their outward normals. These observations have an exact affine representation in five rectangle parameters; a differentiable projection uses error-aware reliability weights to recover a geometrically consistent box. Tangential pooling preserves the normal-position profile, while the shared projection adds 0.132M parameters. On DOTA-v1.0, NIF obtains 77.98%, 79.03%, and 79.32% mAP with Oriented R-CNN, Strip R-CNN, and LSKNet-S, respectively; LSKNet-S gives the strongest single-scale result among the compared methods. NIF also reaches 68.19% mAP on DIOR-R and improves matched FAIR1M-v1.0 and DIOR-R baselines by 0.30% and 0.71%, respectively. On HRSC2016, it raises mean IoU from 0.867 to 0.888 while reducing field error by 24.5%. Finally, with four different detector frameworks frozen, NIF improves relative AP75 by 1.55-4.16% and COCO-style mAP by 0.37-3.76%, without detector retraining. Upon acceptance of this paper, we will publicly release the code at https://github.com/zsk466991125-collab/Normal-Intersection-Fields.

TactiNavi: Serving and Revising an LLM Game Coach with Explicit Strategy Conditions

原文摘要

A deployed LLM coaching agent answers requests whose correct response depends on player state and game version, so advice that is right for one player can be wrong for the next. We describe TactiNavi, the serving system behind the LLM coach of a commercial open-world game, which makes strategy applicability an explicit artifact shared by offline compilation, online execution, failure diagnosis, and release. An offline compiler turns versioned game evidence and expert guidance into strategy packages with explicit prerequisites, the serving plane evaluates those prerequisites as three-valued conditions over structured player state and records decision traces, and a control plane uses the resulting condition-rule dependencies to validate revisions on held-out traffic before release. In a retrospective evaluation of 1,122 logged coaching turns from three deployment periods, condition-bearing packages raise correctness from 57.9% to 82.0% over atomic facts and reduce strategy misapplication under changed player state from 18.1% to 10.4%, while trace-based claim verification reaches 86.4% precision at a median reply latency of 2.07 s. The deployment also showed that most apparent fixes are generation noise, because an unchanged-system rerun recovers 38.4% of failing turns and only one of 15 shipped revision units passes the release checks retrospectively. We distill these results into lessons on treating applicability as a first-class serving object, sizing traces for later diagnosis, and building the null model into the release path.

Learning Implicit Solves for Dynamic Simulations

Chawit Kaewnuratchadasorn, Jiaji Wang, Xin Nie

原文摘要

High-fidelity simulation of dynamical systems is central to scientific discovery and engineering design, yet remains computationally demanding. Here we introduce the Implicit Neural Operator Solver (INOS), which learns the implicit solve and encodes a time integrator. INOS pretrains a neural operator from static equilibrium solutions and reuses it within Newmark-$β$ integration. At each time increment, the integrator forms an effective equilibrium problem, the pretrained neural operator infers the next-step solution field, and the Newmark relations advance the dynamic state. Numerical examples in linear and nonlinear elastodynamics demonstrate accurate full-field predictions without dynamic trajectory supervision. Comparative results show that INOS, evaluated zero-shot, achieves higher predictive accuracy than neural solver baselines trained on dynamic simulations. In addition, INOS delivers over 4,600$\times$ speedup in nonlinear simulations over sequential classical finite-element solvers. INOS natively accommodates changes in dynamic conditions and enables reuse of the pretrained operator across spatial and temporal discretizations. Further evaluation demonstrates a stable million-step rollout. These findings establish INOS as a reusable neural implicit solver for accurate, efficient, and robust dynamic modeling.

ChatGPT as a Surveillance Assistant? An Exploratory Case Study of AI-Assisted Surveillance Risks

Ayana Hussain, Nicholas Vincent

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) can generate detailed guidance, functional code, and persuasive text at scale. As one of the most widely used consumer language model products as of 2026, ChatGPT gives broad public access to these capabilities, motivating concerns about its potential use in surveillance-related tasks. We present an exploratory case study of what potentially harmful surveillance assistance looks like in ChatGPT's public web interface. We contribute a taxonomy of seven surveillance risk categories based on prior LLM risk research and reports of deployed surveillance systems, instantiated as 110 prompts, along with a manually reviewed analysis of ChatGPT's responses. Prompts were issued using two approaches: 55 jailbreak prompts drawing on five types of elicitation strategies, and 55 plain-language direct prompts, each run alone, and if unsuccessful, again with a short fixed prefix. We find that ChatGPT provides substantive surveillance guidance for 40 of the 55 jailbreak prompts and for 33 of the 55 direct prompts without any prefix. Compliant responses also rarely included policy mentions or suggestions for privacy-preserving alternatives. We manually review every response and find that even when ChatGPT states a refusal, it may still supply detailed instructions, working code, or architectural guidance alongside brief ethical caveats.

PRIME W0: Physical Priors from World Models for Embodied Manipulation

Huabin Peng, Fagang Jin, Yancong Wei, Tengfei Ma, Chuhang Liu, Chao Yu, Liqing Chen

原文摘要

Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models excel at instruction following, yet most remain feed-forward: they condition actions only on the current observation and discard both long-horizon temporal context and the hierarchical structure of VLM representations. We present PRIME W0, a hierarchical conditional flow-matching framework that closes this gap through three synergistic designs: (1)per-layer KV injection from a pretrained VLM into an Adaptive MoE action expert; (2)dynamics-aware conditioning via asynchronous world-model subgoal-image prediction and a DINOv2 historical-frame semantic bridge; and (3)Action Dynamic Manifold (ADM) flow matching with covariance-structured noise that respects robot kinematic coupling. PRIME W0 is trained in four stages---VLM pre-training, DAT/NTP visuomotor pre-training, DiT flow-matching decoder assembly with WM injection, and end-to-end SFT---and achieves state-of-the-art results on LIBERO and real-robot benchmarks, with systematic ablations validating each architectural component.

Pixel-space video generation with U-JiT

Théophane Vallaeys, Jakob Verbeek, Matthieu Cord

原文摘要

Latent diffusion and flow matching models are ubiquitous in state-of-the-art generative video models. While highly effective, relying on pretrained autoencoders to compress the data into a lower-dimensional latent space also comes with drawbacks. First, training proceeds in two stages: autoencoder pretraining, with compression and reconstruction objectives, followed by latent generative model training, precluding fully end-to-end training. Second, autoencoders also lead to an inherent loss of signal, and the trade-off between reconstruction quality and generative performance in the latent space is still an active area of research. In this paper we explore the viability of generative video models directly in pixel space. We analyze recent approaches in pixel-space generative modeling of images that rely on basic transformer designs, and identify several shortcomings that limit their effectiveness for the high-dimensional pixel-space video generation. To overcome these limitations, we propose a UNet-like transformer architecture along with improvements to the training recipe and sampling strategy. We conduct controlled experiments, training latent and pixel-space models from scratch on Kinetics-600. For the standard frames-to-video task at 128 resolution, our U-JiT model improves generative FVD by 27% over prior state-of-the-art results, and by 14% against the JiT pixel-space baseline. Scaling to higher 256 resolution, we find the improvement over pixel-space and latent-based models grows as we increase the spatiotemporal compression rate up to $64 \times 64 \times 8$. Finally, we find that U-JiT improves per-frame FID by 27% over latent models and 61% over pixel-space models on class-to-video generation, with respectively 9% and 56% reduction in FVD.

Online Open-World Wafer Defect Discovery using Hyperdimensional Computing

Quanling Zhao, Ava Emami, Tsuyoshi Idé, Rajiv Joshi, Steven Holmes, Michael Passow, Tajana Rosing

原文摘要

Conventional wafer defect analysis relies on offline, closed-world classifiers that fail to detect novel, unseen defect signatures emerging during continuous semiconductor manufacturing. To address this, we propose WaferHDC, an online open-world wafer defect discovery framework based on hyperdimensional computing (HDC). The memory-centric architecture of WaferHDC enables rapid anomaly detection and grouping of recurring failures into compact hypervector representations. This allows the memory space to dynamically scale with new defect modes without retraining a static classifier or archiving entire raw wafer history. WaferHDC first models normal spatial distributions, then dynamically groups recurring failures into persistent defect memory without labels or predefined class counts. It outperforms the strongest online baseline by 13.3 p.p. in adjusted Rand index and 10.5 p.p. in normalized mutual information on the industry-standard WM-811K dataset. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of WaferHDC for continuous and open-world wafer defect analysis.

Understanding the Impact of Model Pruning on Long-Tail Forgetting and Explanation Reliability in Medical Imaging

Nazish Khalid, Tausifa Jan Saleem, Amal Saqib, Donald C. Wunsch, Mohammad Yaqub

原文摘要

Model pruning is widely used to compress deep neural networks, reducing memory and computational requirements with minimal impact on aggregate performance. However, its effect on model behavior remains poorly understood, particularly for long-tailed medical datasets where rare but clinically important conditions are underrepresented. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether pruned models preserve reliable explanations of their predictions. To address this gap, we present a systematic study of long-tail forgetting and explanation reliability under model pruning. Across two long-tailed medical imaging datasets, two CNN architectures, four pruning methods, and sparsity levels up to 95\%, we evaluate predictive performance, explanation stability, and explanation faithfulness. Our results show that predictive performance exhibits a strong frequency-dependent trend, with lower-frequency classes generally experiencing earlier and larger degradation than higher-frequency classes. In contrast, explanation stability and faithfulness are influenced primarily by the pruning strategy, with gradient-informed methods preserving explanation reliability more effectively under aggressive compression. Qualitative and mechanistic analyses further indicate that explanation degradation is primarily associated with the collapse of class-discriminative gradients rather than the disappearance of feature activations. These findings suggest that model compression should be evaluated beyond aggregate performance. Incorporating class-aware and explanation-aware evaluation reveals failure modes that would otherwise remain hidden, while moderate sparsity levels provide a practical balance between compression, predictive performance, and explanation reliability.

Koopman Generative Operators for Efficient Probabilistic Time-Series Forecasting

Raz Marshanski, Liran Nochumsohn, Mayank Jauhari, Boris N. Oreshkin, Omri Azencot

原文摘要

Probabilistic time-series forecasting requires models that simultaneously capture structured temporal dynamics, expressive uncertainty, and efficient inference, yet existing approaches fall short of this goal: latent dynamical models impose structure but rely on restrictive generation mechanisms, while modern generative methods such as diffusion and flow matching achieve flexibility at the cost of iterative and computationally expensive sampling. We introduce the Koopman Generative Operator (KGO), a probabilistic forecasting method that conceptualizes prediction as the evolution of structured uncertainty. KGO integrates three core components: (1) Koopman Patch Embedding (KoPE) for temporally consistent latent trajectory extrapolation; (2) Koopman Flow Matching (KoFM), which enables fast, single-step generation through a closed-form matrix exponential in a Koopman latent space, bypassing iterative sampling; and (3) an Adaptive Uncertainty Gate (AUG), which provides probabilistic forecasts by adapting uncertainty per-variable and per-horizon, corresponding to a learned decomposition of aleatoric uncertainty without manual tuning. By unifying these components, KGO achieves state-of-the-art accuracy on 13/17 ProbTS benchmarks in CRPS and 16/17 in NMAE. Further, by eliminating iterative sampling, KGO delivers at least a 25$\times$ reduction in inference time compared to iterative generative models. These results position KGO as a practical and principled framework that advances the accuracy-efficiency trade-off in probabilistic time-series forecasting, combining leading accuracy on the evaluated benchmarks with fast, single-step generation.

Beyond Local Refinement: Wide-Area Precise Cross-View Localization

Qingguo Hu, Xinyu Ma, Yujie Lin, Yaoxiang Wang, Qi Shi, Zonghao Guo, Chi Chen, Jinsong Su

原文摘要

Fine-grained cross-view localization aims to precisely localize a ground camera against geo-referenced aerial imagery, but current methods typically assume a narrow geographic prior, substantially limiting their applicability when upstream localization remains coarse. To bridge this gap, we study this task over much larger aerial regions. However, this seemingly simple extension fundamentally changes the localization problem: the growing disparity in spatial extent between ground and aerial views makes reliable cross-view matching difficult to establish directly, while the increasing number of look-alike locations in larger regions introduces substantial visual ambiguity. To address these challenges, we propose RingMatch, a search-and-verification framework for wide-area cross-view localization. RingMatch first leverages predictive uncertainty to uncover plausible locations and progressively zooms into their surroundings to obtain increasingly fine-grained evidence, yielding a compact set of promising candidates. We then introduce the depth ring, a novel geometric representation that reveals subtle variations in the spatial layout around a location and serves as a view-shared spatial signature for an LVLM verifier to resolve residual ambiguity. To benchmark this setting, we construct VIGOR-Pro by composing VIGOR aerial tiles into contiguous regions with spatial extents of up to 400 m. Experiments show that RingMatch maintains strong localization performance as the aerial region expands, consistently outperforming representative end-to-end and retrieval-based methods.

When Should an LLM Steering Edit Depend on the Input?

Rachael Harkness, Konrad Rawlik

原文摘要

An activation steering edit should depend on the input exactly when the destination varies \emph{inside} the class a query requests, and that is measurable before any rule is fitted or applied. Contrastive Activation Addition (CAA) adds one fixed direction to every input, the difference of the class means. Conditioning it on the requested class accounts for the between-class variation in the required displacement and leaves the within-class variation untouched, which no rule that reads only the source state can express. We study the impact of increasing input-dependence in the steering edit, moving from a difference of means to a destination retrieved per query --- the mean of the $k$ stored states nearest the query, inside the requested class --- in which the two baselines are endpoints: at $k$ equal to the class size the retrieved rule \emph{is} the class-conditional difference of means. We measure input-dependent steering on six substitution corpora that vary in whether the edit changes a word or a clause, and on an external benchmark, and find that input-dependent steering outperforms fixed-direction steering when the destination varies within the class. Retrieval wins at every layer of every substitution corpus in two models, and the level of input-dependence needed governs how to apply it: word-level edits are best made in the first tenth of the network from a few neighbours, clause-level edits at any depth from the class mean. Where the class already determines the answer the class mean suffices and retrieval only matches it, though a fixed direction still fails there. Four quantities computed from the states alone identify the regime in which the edit should be applied.

Non-Interfering Asymmetric AdamW Updates for Constrained Exploration of Equifinality in Hybrid Models

Ekaterina Gikalo, Zavud Baghirov, Christian Reimers, Markus Reichstein, Martin Jung, Marco Körner

原文摘要

Hybrid models let neural networks supply the unresolved parameters of a process-based simulator, and are fitted to observations that constrain aggregate fluxes and storages but not the internal partitioning that produces them. Such a fit is equifinal: configurations indistinguishable in the observed aggregates can disagree substantially about the unobserved internals, and therefore about the mechanism they attribute to the same data. We study evapotranspiration, whose total flux is observed while its split into transpiration and evaporation is not. A model ensemble built from random seeds alone spans only a narrow band of the partitionings the data admit. We produce the spread deliberately, training members under auxiliary repulsion on transpiration, subject to the fit to observations not degrading. Non-interference is usually arranged by making the auxiliary gradient orthogonal to the main one, but under AdamW the applied step is a preconditioned momentum direction, so orthogonality between raw gradients no longer implies it. We introduce Non-interfering Asymmetric Network Optimization (NANO), an update whose first-order effect on the main loss is exactly that of the main objective alone, whose auxiliary step is bounded, and which concentrates repulsion in the coordinates the main gradient leaves idle.

原文摘要

We introduce iMED, the first synchronized multi-endoscope dataset for robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery (RAMIS), designed to address a fundamental limitation in surgical vision benchmarking: the absence of independent held-out viewpoints. Existing surgical datasets capture single-trajectory sequences from a single endoscope, making it impossible to distinguish geometric generalization from photometric interpolation along a narrow forward-facing path. iMED provides 340 sequences ~170K synchronized timepoints with 4 views per timepoint) recorded simultaneously from two independent stereo endoscopes across ex vivo, postmortem, and live surgical settings, spanning 14 specimens with diverse anatomical regions and motion regimes. The dataset includes calibrated camera intrinsics, ArUco-based frame-wise pose estimates with uncertainty quantification, instrument segmentation masks, and rich clinical metadata. Using a train-on-one-endoscope, test-on-another evaluation protocol, we benchmark 23 state-of-the-art methods across rigid and deformable novel view synthesis, pose estimation, feature matching, and monocular depth estimation. Our experiments show that methods relying primarily on photometric supervision degrade substantially under this held-out-endoscope setting, while methods with explicit geometric regularization are more robust across views in our benchmark. Notably, large-scale foundation models transfer surprisingly well to surgical imagery, often outperforming domain-specific models, suggesting pitfalls in current fine-tuning protocols. iMED establishes a new evaluation protocol for geometric generalization in surgical vision.

Bounded AUKS: A Novel Evaluation Metric for Anomaly Detection via Bounded Area Under the Kolmogorov--Smirnov Curve

Yanshuo Zhang, Juan Du

原文摘要

Recent literature widely used global metrics such as AUROC and AUPRO to quantify the detection performance. AUROC and AUPRO scores are approaching 100% in some public datasets such as MVTec AD dataset and VisA dataset, which misleadingly suggests that the pixel-level anomaly detection task has already been solved. Threshold-independent metrics represented by AUROC inherently ignore the threshold selection process, which is inevitable in practical applications. Although AUPRO restricts the False Positive rates (FPRs) to an acceptable range, extremely low FPRs can lead to increased false negative rates (FNRs). We argue that there is a lack of metrics capable of quantifying the separation between the anomaly score distributions of normal and anomalous samples, which hinders advancements in anomaly detection. In response, we propose the Bounded Area Under the Kolmogorov--Smirnov curve (Bounded AUKS), a partial integral metric that integrates the difference between TPR and FPR within a data-driven bounded range. Specifically, we introduce AUKS from KS integral as a direct measure of separability between the anomaly score distributions. The bounded range is determined only by score distributions of normal test samples. Lower bound excludes the uninformative high-FPR region. Upper bound avoids evaluation in extreme regions that aggressively push FPR towards zero, which result in a very low recall. Our experiments on 9 models across MVTec AD and VisA datasets show that Bounded AUKS can address the limitations of existing metrics and has a better performance in evaluating unsupervised anomaly detection models.

What Does It Mean to Remove an Edge? Intervention-Aware Fidelity for Graph Neural Network Explanations

Rocco Mattia Di Mauro, Marco Grassia, Giuseppe Mangioni

原文摘要

Graph neural network explanations are often evaluated via deletion fidelity, i.e., by deleting their top-ranked edges and measuring the resulting change in model output. Yet, in a message-passing GNN, "deleting an edge" does not specify a unique intervention. Structural deletion removes the edge from the graph and recomputes quantities such as degree normalization and attention, whereas message suppression leaves this structural context intact while blocking the message carried by the edge. The meaning of deletion fidelity therefore depends on what the intervention targets in the model computation. We formalize this distinction and derive sufficient conditions for exact equivalence. The two interventions coincide for additive message passing with edge-set-independent coefficients, but can diverge when aggregation depends on the presence of zero messages or when removing an edge changes the coefficients applied to surviving messages. We then construct intervention-specific edge attributions and evaluate each resulting ranking under both interventions, testing whether their relative fidelity changes with the evaluation intervention. Across nine datasets and a panel of GIN, GCN, and GATv2 models at depths 2--5, all nine GIN controls satisfy the equivalence predicted by the theory. On the target logit, the relative fidelity of the two rankings depends on the evaluation intervention in 10 of 11 reportable GCN and GATv2 cells, and in nine of them each ranking has the larger deletion area under the intervention it was built with. Deletion fidelity is thus not a property of an edge ranking alone. Evaluation protocols should explicitly report the intervention, output functional, target, and perturbation unit, and test alternative intervention semantics when the scientific question does not uniquely determine one.

A Historical Trajectory Assisted Optimization Method for Zeroth-Order Federated Learning

Yu Cai, Canxi Huang, Zike Li, Jing Gong, Xiaoyu He

原文摘要

Federated learning heavily relies on distributed gradient descent techniques. In the situation where gradient information is not available, the gradients need to be estimated from zeroth-order information, which typically involves computing finite-differences along isotropic random directions. This method suffers from high estimation errors, as the geometric features of the objective landscape may be overlooked during the isotropic sampling. In this work, we propose a non-isotropic sampling method to improve zeroth-order gradient estimation. The method uses historical solution trajectories to identify a promising subspace and constructs a non-isotropic Gaussian smoothing that balances exploitation in this subspace with global exploration. We implement this method in zeroth-order federated settings, and show that the convergence rate aligns with existing ones while introducing no significant overheads in communication or local computation. The effectiveness of our proposal is verified on several numerical experiments in comparison to several commonly-used zeroth-order federated optimization algorithms. The experiments cover both independent and identically distributed data and heterogeneous client data distributions.

Mass Scaling Laws for Energy-Optimal Horizontal Multirotor Flight

Ayush Patnaik, Nicolas Michel, Leonard Baursfeld, Davide Scaramuzza, Xinfan Lin

原文摘要

Multicopters are a type of aerial robot seeing extensive real-world applications but with range and endurance as critical bottlenecks. Optimization of its energy efficiency through energy-aware flight planning (e.g. cruise speed-scheduling) has hence been an important topic. The mass of the multicopter is an important factor to consider, as it has a significant impact on efficiency, and many common applications are subject to frequent mass variation due to payload change. This work derives closed-form scaling relationships between the energy-optimal steady horizontal flight behavior of a multicopter and its vehicle mass, and validates them experimentally on two multirotor platforms. Specifically, for mass-only variation, i.e., when payload changes the vehicle mass while the airframe geometry, aerodynamic characteristics, and rotor configuration remain unchanged, we show through a combination of numerical simulation, theoretical derivation, and experimental validation that (1) the energy-optimal velocity is proportional to the square root of vehicle mass; (2) the energy-optimal pitch angle is constant with respect to mass; and (3) the optimal energy per meter is proportional to mass. The analysis shows that these three relationships arise from a common mass-similarity property of the steady-state flight and rotor-aerodynamic equations. Furthermore, the obtained scaling relationships enable simple yet effective cruise-speed planning to optimize energy efficiency and extend the range and endurance of the multicopter.

TAPES: Task-Aligned Joint Predictive Pretraining for Transaction Event Sequences

Ruobing Zuo, Weiyu Han, Huilin He, Haoyu Jiang, Ze Zhao, Jie Sheng, Xiao Tan, Shuai Chen 等 9 位作者

原文摘要

Transaction event sequences support diverse prediction tasks in online commerce and digital financial services. The same transaction records can yield prediction targets with different semantics, including values, changes, and relations to past events. These targets impose different constraints on history representations, but their predictability alone does not establish the downstream utility of a target set. Moreover, target-wise prediction losses do not explicitly model conditional co-occurrence among targets. To address these challenges, we propose TAPES, a task-aligned joint predictive pretraining framework for transaction sequences. TAPES constructs a finite collection of candidate target sets from admissible field-operator combinations. It selects a target set according to the downstream utility of representations learned through short joint pretraining trials under matched budgets. It then reinitializes the encoder and pretrains it on the selected targets through a joint likelihood parameterized by a shared discrete latent variable, before downstream supervised adaptation. Experiments in a real-world transaction-risk setting and on multiple public financial benchmarks spanning diverse downstream tasks demonstrate that TAPES outperforms representative baselines. Ablation studies further validate the contributions of predictive target selection and joint modeling.

How Close to the Theme? Similarity-Label Conditioning for Game Music Generation

Shangxuan Luo, Zixun Guo, Jinjie Shi, Joshua Reiss

原文摘要

Composers develop music from an original idea, controlling how similar each new section is to it, from near repetition to new material. Game music needs this often, as its material repeats over long play. Music models, however, rarely learn to control similarity from real pieces. We further train a pretrained MIDI model on section pairs from Super Mario pieces. A label states each pair's similarity, and a context vector summarises the given section, or context. For 157 test contexts, the model generates six outputs per label. Twelve measures score the outputs; one main measure each covers melody, pitch content, rhythm and note length. On average, outputs requested as similar are more similar to their context than those requested as dissimilar, and not to other pieces. All twelve measures favour them; each main measure stays significant after correction for multiple tests. On melody, the gap comes mainly from more frequent restatement of the context's melody. Against an otherwise identical model without a label, only the request for high similarity makes outputs more similar. In a listening test, ratings followed melodic overlap with the context most closely of all measures.

Subspace Node Pruning

原文摘要

Node pruning is the art of removing computational units such as neurons, filters, attention heads, or even entire layers to significantly reduce inference time while retaining network performance. In this work, we show that a broad family of importance measures, from activation-based to Fisher-based, share a common quadratic form. Through a lower-triangular change of basis, this form yields a pruning subspace in which entire nodes can be removed while the impact of the lost units is simultaneously recovered via linear least squares. Furthermore, the importance measures within our subspace are decoupled and additive through an orthogonalization of the layer activations, allowing multi-node pruning within layers without interference between importance scores. Our method, Subspace Node Pruning (SNP), outperforms the compared baselines on VGG-16 and ResNet-50 on ImageNet. On OPT-125M and LLaMA-2 7B, SNP matches the state-of-the-art LLM Surgeon at a 40-shot schedule and outperforms it whenever fewer shots are used, all without any retraining after pruning.

TEXMET: A Deep Learning Benchmark for Archaeological Textile Reconstruction

Muhammad Hamza Zafar, Davit Gigilashvili, Jon Yngve Hardeberg

原文摘要

The reconstruction of fragmented historical textiles presents a significant challenge in computational archaeology. The Oseberg ship burial, dating to 834 CE, yielded hundreds of degraded textile fragments that have resisted systematic computational analysis. While deep learning has revolutionized image-based puzzle solving, progress on archaeological textiles has been limited by the lack of domain-specific datasets and systematic evaluation of modern architectures. To address this gap, we present TEXMET, a curated dataset of 18,644 historical textile images from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Open Access collection, representing the first textile-specific benchmark for puzzle-solving research. Using TEXMET, we conduct a systematic evaluation of three state-of-the-art puzzle-solving models: JPDVT, FCViT, and DiffAssemble. Our experiments reveal that the transformer-based models pre-trained on standard datasets fail to generalize to textiles, but domain-specific fine-tuning proves highly effective. The graph-based DiffAssemble model, when fine-tuned on TEXMET, achieves 85.89% puzzle accuracy on textile data. Most significantly, applying this fine-tuned model to 45 highly degraded Oseberg fragments yields a performance increase from 26.67% to 64.44% puzzle accuracy. These results establish TEXMET as a new benchmark for textile reconstruction and demonstrate that domain adaptation is essential for applying puzzle-solving methods to imagery of real archaeological materials.

SPOD: Recovering Suppressed Temporal Evidence in Video-LLMs via Single-Pass Orthogonal Decomposition

Yangguang Lin, Quan Fang, Xiaoyan Liu, Zefan Xu

原文摘要

Video Large Language Models (Video-LLMs) have achieved strong performance on many video understanding tasks, yet remain vulnerable to temporal hallucination in time-sensitive reasoning scenarios such as scene transition understanding and event ordering. Existing solutions either require costly retraining or introduce inefficient multi-pass inference and external supervision at test time. In this work, we show that temporal evidence is already encoded in Video-LLM hidden representations but is not fully exploited during standard inference. Motivated by this observation, we propose Single-Pass Orthogonal Decomposition (SPOD), a training-free framework that recovers suppressed temporal evidence through analytical hidden-state manipulation in a single forward pass. SPOD consists of two components: Frame Distinctiveness Analysis (FDA), which identifies salient frames from middle-layer hidden-state geometry, and Temporal Delta Subspace (TDS), which constructs orthogonal temporal and prior subspaces from weighted inter-frame hidden-state differences. By decomposing final hidden states into temporal, prior, and residual components and rescaling them independently, SPOD enhances dynamic information, suppresses static appearance bias, and preserves complementary information. Experiments on VidHalluc, EventHallusion, and VideoMMMU show that SPOD consistently outperforms strong inference-time baselines across temporal reasoning tasks and model architectures while retaining near-vanilla inference efficiency. These results suggest that improving temporal reasoning in Video-LLMs may depend not only on additional supervision, but also on recovering temporal evidence already present in their internal representations. Our code is available at https://github.com/VioAgnes/SPOD.

Volatility-Aware Extreme Event Detection in High-Frequency Financial Markets

Maorufa Zaman, Haris Md Sahed

原文摘要

Predicting extreme price movements in high-frequency financial markets is a challenging task due to non-stationarity, heavy-tailed return distributions, and severe class imbalance. In particular, rare but impactful events are often difficult to detect using conventional modeling approaches, which typically treat extreme movements as isolated observations. This study proposes a volatility-aware approach for extreme event detection using high-frequency Bitcoin limit order book (LOB) data. Motivated by empirical evidence of volatility clustering, the target formulation is extended to incorporate both large future returns and high-volatility regimes. This redefinition increases the proportion of informative samples and aligns the learning objective with the underlying market dynamics. Using a tree-based model (XGBoost) with time-series cross-validation and imbalance-aware evaluation, the proposed method achieves a Precision-Recall AUC of approximately 0.40, significantly outperforming the baseline formulation with a PR-AUC of around 0.06. This represents more than a sixfold improvement in detecting rare events. The results highlight that target design plays a critical role in financial machine learning, often exceeding the impact of model complexity. By incorporating volatility structure into the labeling process, the proposed approach provides a more effective and realistic framework for extreme event detection in high-frequency cryptocurrency markets.

From Perturbation Sensitivity to Sparse Autoencoder Feature Interpretation: An EEG Foundation-Model Case Study

Yucong Cao, Chenqi Li, Tingting Zhu

原文摘要

Sparse autoencoders (SAEs) split a model's internal activity into many sparse units, or latents, and a latent is often named after a concept when removing that concept from the input changes its activity. We identify a consequential confound in this inference: if removing the concept changes the input more than the comparison edit does, a larger response may reflect a larger edit rather than the concept. Brain-signal (electroencephalography, EEG) models provide a controlled test, because how much an edit changes the EEG input can be measured directly. We measure the SAE response as the change in how often each latent is active, averaged over all latents. Across 27 combinations of model, dataset, and layer, removing the 8--12 Hz alpha band changes this response 7.33 times as much as removing an equally wide 30--34 Hz control band, but it also changes the signal far more. Matching the two edits per trial on squared time-domain distortion lowers the mean ratio to 1.42, with 19 of 27 combinations above one. Matching thus substantially reduces, but does not eliminate, the alpha--control contrast. The residual supports relative sensitivity under this single control, not general spectral specificity or an individual alpha-representing latent. We use an evidence-to-claim map to separate what this comparison supports from stronger claims of specificity and feature semantics.

CurEvo: Curriculum-Guided Self-Evolution for Video Understanding

原文摘要

Recent self-evolution frameworks for video understanding have demonstrated the potential for autonomous improvement from unlabeled videos. However, existing approaches often suffer from weakly controlled optimization and capability progression because they lack structured guidance for generating, evaluating, and reusing supervision throughout the iterative learning process. We present CurEvo, a curriculum-guided self-evolution framework that organizes this loop as a competence-aware progression. Curriculum-Guided Self-Evolution maintains a competence-aware curriculum state and cumulative training pool across iterations. Within this loop, Multi-Dimensional Question Generation supplies complementary supervision, from directly verifiable structural questions for perception to type-conditioned questions for recognition and understanding. Type-Adaptive Evaluation separately assesses question quality and answer reliability with criteria matched to each type's evidence; its scores determine which pairs enter the pool and how the next curriculum state is updated. Across seven backbones and four VideoQA benchmarks, CurEvo consistently improves benchmark accuracy and benchmark semantic score. For Qwen2.5-VL(7B), accuracy rises from 67.84% to 69.91% on ActivityNet-QA and from 76.94% to 79.61% on NExT-QA. CurEvo thus establishes self-generated supervision as a stable route to autonomous video understanding without task-specific human QA annotations during self-evolution.

原文摘要

We propose VT-MUSE, a Multimodal Unified SEquential representation learning framework for visuotactilemanipulation. Existing approaches often encode visual and tactile observations independently before fusion, limiting their ability to capture fine-grained cross-modal dependencies. Moreover, most methods focus on observations at the current time step and overlook the temporal evolution of contact. VT-MUSE addresses both limitations through a two-stage representation learning framework. In Stage I, modality specific encoders are jointly adapted via cross-modal temporal alignment and masked-view consistency. In Stage II, a conditional variational latent model processes masked visual sequences together with full tactile histories. Auxiliary decoders reconstruct the masked recent visual observations and predict tactile depth changes, encouraging the latent representation to retain both global visual context and local contact dynamics. The learned representation is subsequently integrated into a lightweight Transformer policy through gated cross-attention. On the simulation benchmark, VT-MUSE outperforms the strongest baseline evaluated on all tasks by 11 percentage points and also achieves substantial improvements in real-world experiments.

原文摘要

Industrial recommender systems allocate substantial computation to pointwise candidate scoring, yet separate reranking and mix-ranking stages still assemble the final exposure slate using hand-crafted rules and specialized low-capacity models. Mix-ranking combines product cards, short videos, livestreams, and advertising cards supplied by distinct upstream business channels. Although these rules and models encode valuable domain knowledge, they are inherently limited in leveraging additional data and computation. They constrain the combinatorial space of candidate slates and determine objective trade-offs through manual tuning. To enable scalable and effective slate generation, we reformulate reranking and mix-ranking as a unified learning problem whose performance can improve with computation. Specifically, we instantiate this formulation across the reranking and mix-ranking stages and propose OneTrans-GSR, a single decoder-only policy that extends our deployed OneTrans backbone to generate the exposure slate end-to-end. During training, a reward model evaluates complete slates and guides reinforcement learning toward slate-level and long-term objectives. During decoding, business constraints are explicitly enforced. Offline evaluation shows that slate quality consistently improves as reward-model and policy compute increase. Deployed in a large-scale industrial recommendation system, OneTrans-GSR mixes heterogeneous content types within a unified slate. In online A/B tests, it improves GMV/u by 2.63%, advertiser value by 2.06%, and repurchase rate by 2.03%, while reducing end-to-end latency across the reranking and mix-ranking stages by 13%. These results mark a paradigm shift in slate generation: moving beyond human-engineered heuristics toward a general learned policy creates a scalable path for further algorithmic optimization and compute-driven improvement.

Review Rarely Beats the Stronger Model: Separating Verification from Capability Transfer in LLM Pipelines

Yirui Zhang, Yash Raj Shrestha

原文摘要

Qwen3-8B reviewing Llama-3.1-8B in math adds 33.2 points, yet Qwen3-8B alone is 6.4 points more accurate than the result. Reviewing another model's answer is usually judged by its gain over the generator. We show that this confuses verification, which adds accuracy beyond either model alone, with capability transfer, where a stronger reviewer supplies answers it could have given on its own. Measured against the stronger model alone, across 48 pairs of 12 open-weight models (3B to 72B) in math, knowledge, code and reasoning, review beats it in only 9 of 96 review directions, and does worse the larger the capability gap. The reason is anchoring: the reviewer mostly follows the generator, discarding its own correct answers. Review costs 2.6 to 2.8 times as much as the stronger model alone, while a selector using the same two calls is 2.7 to 4.2 points more accurate than review and cheaper. Studies of verification should report the stronger model alone, not only the gain over the generator.

ZeroGR: Filtering-First Constrained Decoding for Generative Recommendation

原文摘要

Generative recommendation is gaining traction in production, retrieving items by generating their identifiers one token at a time. The generated sequences must identify relevant catalog items, so constrained decoding couples relevance scoring with validity filtering. Because most possible sequences are invalid, scoring before filtering wastes computation on candidates that will be discarded. Our evaluation shows that filtering first can avoid this work with negligible impact on recommendation quality. We present ZeroGR, a filtering-first constrained decoding system for generative recommendation. ZeroGR uses a step-sliced filtering index to reduce GPU memory use by tailoring data representations to each decoding step. Its execution engine adopts shared-slot execution to accelerate data exchange across stages and hybrid projection to adapt computation to workload patterns, thereby reducing execution overhead. During index refreshes, ZeroGR applies layout-guided streaming construction to speed up updates and limit serving interference. Extensive evaluation shows that ZeroGR accelerates the filtering and scoring pipeline by up to $9.9\times$ over representative baselines while reducing GPU index memory use and accelerating index reconstruction.
