Scalable Neural Video Representation Compression

Tianhao Peng, Ho Man Kwan, Fan Zhang, Shan Liu, David Bull

Scalable video coding (SVC) encodes a video into a layered bitstream of a base layer and one or more enhancement layers, enabling decoding at different bitrate/quality/resolution operating points for diverse devices and network conditions. SVC has been incorporated into major video coding standards and has recently attracted growing interest for both scene-agnostic and scene-adaptive neural video codecs. Among the latter, implicit neural representation (INR) based codecs overfit a compact neural network to an individual video, offering fast decoding and competitive coding efficiency. However, research on scalable INR-based compression remains in its infancy: existing methods introduce additional network layers, which couple the bitrate with the decoding complexity and cannot match strong scalable/non-scalable codecs. This paper proposes S-NVRC, a scalable INR-based video codec that jointly supports fine-grained bitrate and decoding complexity scalability from a single embedded bitstream. It adopts a coarse-to-fine prefix for feature grids and a nested prefix for network layers, which scale bitrate and decoding complexity, respectively. With a single encoding, S-NVRC spans a wide range of bitrate and decoding complexity and outperforms SHM-12.4 and the multi-layer VTM-20.0 by 43.7% and 5.6% in BD-rate on the UVG dataset.

Improving Energy Efficiency of Uplink RSMA via Rydberg Atomic Quantum Receiver

Xinya Shen, Zheng Chu, David Chieng, Chiew Foong Kwong, Qihao Peng, Zhengyu Zhu, Pei Xiao, Jianyue Zhu

This paper investigates an uplink rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) network empowered by a Rydberg atomic quantum receiver (RAQR) to maximize energy efficiency (EE). To overcome the amplitude-only measurement limitation of the considered direct readout RAQR, we devise a phase alignment mechanism that linearizes the received signal while retaining full channel energy, thereby enabling tractable optimization. The resulting non-convex fractional EE problem is transformed via Dinkelbach's method. For IoT scenarios with symmetric rate requirements, we derive exact closed-form power allocation from the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions, which yields a globally optimal bisection search with negligible computational latency. For asymmetric rate requirements, we develop a generalized block coordinate descent-based power allocation (BCD-PA) framework that eliminates reliance on expensive interior-point solvers. We further propose a low-complexity paired allocation (LC-Paired) that exploits user pairing and closed-form bandwidth solutions via the Lambert-W function. Simulation results confirm that the KKT-based scheme attains the highest EE, while the BCD-PA offers a flexible complexity-performance trade-off. The LC-Paired scheme drastically reduces computational cost with only moderate EE degradation.

MOSAIC-Flow: Orthogonal-Axis and Status-Conditioned Fusion for Missing-Sequence Completion in Brain Tumor MRI

Pengli Zhu, Zhihao Peng, Yixuan Yuan

Missing-sequence completion is important for comprehensive brain tumor characterization, but cross-modal fusion can obscure sequence-specific contrast and lose fine-grained three-dimensional tumor detail. To address this challenge, we introduce Modality-aware Orthogonal-axis Status-conditioned Attentive Integration for Completion (MOSAIC-Flow), a unified framework for missing-sequence completion that learns a target-conditioned velocity field while keeping the seven acquired volumes fixed throughout the transport. Specifically, modality-aware stems independently encode each sequence, and orthogonal-axis refinement captures axial, coronal, and sagittal dependencies while retaining the three-dimensional representation. Status-conditioned prototype fusion uses compact modality and availability tokens to route and modulate pooled queries from the fused visual representation, enabling target-adaptive conditioning without dense voxel-to-voxel attention. A conditional flow matching objective transports target-channel noise toward the single missing sequence, while four Heun trajectories are averaged to produce the completion. Evaluation across structural, diffusion, and contrast-enhanced MRI in UCSF-PDGM demonstrates consistent whole-brain and tumor-region fidelity across all eight single-target completion tasks, with the strongest performance on structural sequences. Code is available at https://github.com/CUHK-AIM-Group/MOSAIC-FLOW.

Rydberg Atomic Quantum Receiver Empowered Hybrid Non-orthogonal Multiple Access

Xinya Shen, Zheng Chu, David Chieng, Chiew Foong Kwong, Qihao Peng, Pei Xiao, Theodoros Tsiftsis, Jianyue Zhu

In this paper, we propose a novel uplink Hybrid Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) architecture assisted by Rydberg Atomic Quantum Receivers (RAQRs) to improve energy efficiency by addressing the physical constraints of atomic sensing. We formulate a joint optimization problem encompassing phase measurements and multi-user power allocation to minimize the total transmit power. This problem is particularly challenging due to the non-linear amplitude-only observations of atomic vapor cells. To decomposes the resulting non-convexity, we develop a hierarchical three-layer decomposition optimization framework that systematically decouples the global problem. The inner layer employs a customized Expectation Maximization-Gerchberg-Saxton (EM-GS) algorithm to resolve phase ambiguity and estimate equivalent channel gains. The middle layer derives closed-form optimal power allocation solutions via Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. The outer layer utilizes linear Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) detection for high-reliability signal recovery. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed framework over conventional RF-based Hybrid NOMA. Notably, the atomic architecture achieves approximately a 93% reduction in total power consumption compared to Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA) baselines while maintaining strict backward compatibility, thereby laying a solid foundation for practical deployment in next-generation green communication networks.

SimPBL: A Multi-Agent Framework for Project-Based Learning

Daniel Zhang-Li, Joy Jia Yin Lim, Binglin Liu, Shangqing Tu, Zijun Yao, Hao Peng Tsinghua University, Tsinghua University, Jifan Yu, Haoxuan Li Tsinghua University 等 19 位作者

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is an important learning method that promotes understanding and acquiring practical skills through training learners through a project. However, effective PBL often requires sustained orchestration and collaboration, but existing LLM-based learning tools provide partial assistance without explicitly modeling these roles, and overly comprehensive help provided by LLM can reduce learner autonomy. We propose SimPBL, a multi-agent framework with an orchestrator agent that provides adaptive scaffolding from interaction logs and collaborator agents that support project work through boundary-aware collaboration. We conduct comprehensive evaluation to study the effectiveness of SimPBL, where we observe a 14% improvement in learner examination score. Results from extensive studies further highlights the ability of SimPBL to manage learning behavior and improve learning experience. Code and materials are available at https://anonymous.4open.science/r/SimPBL-D5B8.

MixKVQ: Query-Aware Mixed-Precision KV Cache Quantization for Long-Context Reasoning

Tao Zhang, Ziqian Zeng South China University of Technology, Hao Peng, Huiping Zhuang, Cen Chen South China University of Technology

Long Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning has significantly advanced the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs), but this progress is accompanied by substantial memory and latency overhead from the extensive Key-Value (KV) cache. Although KV cache quantization is a promising compression technique, existing low-bit quantization methods often exhibit severe performance degradation on complex reasoning tasks. Fixed-precision quantization struggles to handle outlier channels in the key cache, while current mixed-precision strategies fail to accurately identify components requiring high-precision representation. We find that an effective low-bit KV cache quantization strategy must consider two factors: a key channel’s intrinsic quantization difficulty and its relevance to the query. Based on this insight, we propose MixKVQ, a novel plug-and-play method that introduces a lightweight, query-aware algorithm to identify and preserve critical key channels that need higher precision, while applying per-token quantization for value cache. Experiments on complex reasoning datasets demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms existing low-bit methods, achieving performance comparable to a full-precision baseline at a substantially reduced memory footprint.

Activation-Guided Local Editing for Jailbreaking Attacks

Jiecong Wang, Haoran Li, Hao Peng, Ziqian Zeng South China University of Technology, Zihao Wang Nanyang Technological University, Haohua Du Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Zhengtao Yu Kunming University of Science and Technology and Yunnan Key Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence

As Large Language Models (LLMs) become indispensable assistants, they remain vulnerable to misuse. Jailbreaking is an essential adversarial technique for red-teaming models to uncover and patch security flaws. However, existing jailbreak methods suffer from significant limitations. Token-level jailbreak attacks often produce incoherent or unreadable inputs and exhibit poor transferability, while prompt-level attacks lack scalability and rely heavily on manual effort and human ingenuity. We propose AGILE, a concise and effective two-stage framework that combines the advantages of these approaches. The first stage performs a one-shot, scenario-based generation of context and rephrases the original malicious query to obscure its harmful intent. The second stage utilizes information from the model’s hidden states to guide fine-grained edits, effectively steering the model’s internal representation of the input from a malicious one toward a benign one. Extensive experiments demonstrate that AGILE achieves state-of-the-art Attack Success Rate, with gains of up to 37.74% over the strongest baseline, and AGILE exhibits excellent transferability to black-box and large-scale models. Our code is available at https://github.com/SELGroup/AGILE.

WildReward: Learning Reward Models from In-the-Wild Human Interactions

Hao Peng Tsinghua University, Tsinghua University, Yunjia Qi Tsinghua University, Xiaozhi Wang Tsinghua University, Zijun Yao, Lei Hou Tsinghua University, Juanzi Li

Reward models (RMs) are crucial for the training of large language models (LLMs), yet they typically rely on large-scale human-annotated preference pairs. With the widespread deployment of LLMs, in-the-wild interactions have emerged as a rich source of implicit reward signals. This raises the question: Can we develop reward models directly from in-the-wild interactions? In this work, we explore this possibility by adopting WildChat as an interaction source and proposing a pipeline to extract reliable human feedback, yielding 186k high-quality instances for training WildReward via ordinal regression directly on user feedback without preference pairs. Extensive experiments demonstrate that WildReward achieves comparable or even superior performance compared to conventional reward models, with improved calibration and cross-sample consistency. We also observe that WildReward benefits directly from user diversity, where more users yield stronger reward models. Finally, we apply WildReward to online DPO training and observe significant improvements across various downstream tasks. We will release our code, data, and models to facilitate future research.

Towards a Mechanistic Understanding of Large Reasoning Models: A Survey of Training, Inference, and Failures

Yi Hu, Jiaqi Gu Peking University, Ruxin Wang, Zijun Yao, Hao Peng Tsinghua University, Tsinghua University, Xiaobao Wu Shanghai Jiaotong University, Jianhui Chen Peking University, Muhan Zhang Peking University 等 9 位作者

Reinforcement learning (RL) has catalyzed the emergence of Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) that have pushed reasoning capabilities to new heights. While their performance has garnered significant excitement, exploring the internal mechanisms driving these behaviors has become an equally critical research frontier. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of the mechanistic understanding of LRMs, organizing recent findings into three core dimensions: 1) training dynamics, 2) reasoning mechanisms, and 3) unintended behaviors. By synthesizing these insights, we aim to bridge the gap between black-box performance and mechanistic transparency. Finally, we discuss under-explored challenges to outline a roadmap for future mechanistic studies, including the need for applied interpretability, improved methodologies, and a unified theoretical framework.

AI 速览:R4T 先用强化学习把集合级目标“编译”成训练信号,再训练轻量扩散检索器,实现高效的单次扇出检索。

Many modern retrieval problems are set-valued: given a broad intent, the system must return a collection of results that optimizes higher-order properties (e.g., diversity, coverage, complementarity, coherence) while remaining grounded with respect to a fixed database. Set-valued objectives are typically non-decomposable and are not captured by existing supervised (query, content) datasets which only prioritize top-1 retrieval. Consequently, fan-out retrieval is often employed to generate diverse subqueries to retrieve item sets. While reinforcement learning (RL) can optimize set-level objectives via interaction, deploying an RL-tuned LLM for fan-out retrieval is prohibitively expensive at inference time. Conversely, diffusion-based generative retrieval enables efficient single-pass fan-out in embedding space, but requires objective-aligned training targets. To address these issues, we propose R4T (Retrieve-for-Train), which uses RL once as an objective transducer in a three-step process: (i) train a fan-out LLM with composite set-level rewards, (ii) synthesize objective-consistent training pairs, and (iii) train a lightweight diffusion retriever to model the conditional distribution of set-valued outputs. Across large-scale fashion and music benchmarks consisting of curated item sets, we show that R4T improves retrieval quality relative to strong baselines while reducing query-time fan-out latency by an order of magnitude.

AI 速览:OpenHands是一个开源平台,用于构建和评估能像人类开发者一样编写代码、操作命令行和浏览网页的AI智能体。

Software is one of the most powerful tools that we humans have at our disposal; it allows a skilled programmer to interact with the world in complex and profound ways. At the same time, thanks to improvements in large language models (LLMs), there has also been a rapid development in AI agents that interact with and affect change in their surrounding environments. In this paper, we introduce OpenHands (f.k.a. OpenDevin), a platform for the development of powerful and flexible AI agents that interact with the world in similar ways to those of a human developer: by writing code, interacting with a command line, and browsing the web. We describe how the platform allows for the implementation of new agents, safe interaction with sandboxed environments for code execution, coordination between multiple agents, and incorporation of evaluation benchmarks. Based on our currently incorporated benchmarks, we perform an evaluation of agents over 15 challenging tasks, including software engineering (e.g., SWE-BENCH) and web browsing (e.g., WEBARENA), among others. Released under the permissive MIT license, OpenHands is a community project spanning academia and industry with more than 2.1K contributions from over 188 contributors.
