DuoBench: A Reproducible Benchmark for Bimanual Manipulation in Simulation and the Real World

原文摘要

Bimanual robot systems substantially expand manipulation capabilities, but coordinating two arms introduces additional control complexity and failure modes that are not well captured by existing benchmarks. We introduce DuoBench, an extensible benchmarking framework for bimanual manipulation policies on the FR3 Duo platform. DuoBench comprises eleven tasks spanning four coordination categories, implemented in simulation and partially replicated in the real world through reproducible task recipes with 3D-printable assets. In addition, we propose a stage-based evaluation scheme that supports fine-grained semantic failure analysis beyond binary success. It includes stage-conditional pass rates with confidence intervals as well as human-teleoperated datasets for all benchmark tasks. We benchmark several imitation-learning and vision-language-action policies in simulation and on real hardware. Our results show that current policies remain challenged by bimanual manipulation, particularly at the beginning of interaction, during parallel arm execution, and in sim-to-real transfer settings. We further find that simulation reveals the same failure modes as real-world experiments. DuoBench provides a reproducible testbed for analyzing them and studying future methods for dual-arm policy learning. Code, datasets, and videos are available at https://duobench.github.io

SLogic: Subgraph-Informed Logical Rule Learning for Knowledge Graph Completion

Trung Hoang Le, Tran Cao Son, Ishtiaq Ahmed, Huiping Cao

原文摘要

Logical rule-based methods offer an interpretable approach to knowledge graph completion (KGC) by capturing compositional relationships in the form of human-readable inference rules. While existing logical rule-based methods learn rule confidence scores, they typically assign a global weight to each rule schema, applied uniformly across the graph. This is a significant limitation, as a rule's importance often varies depending on the specific query instance. To address this, we introduce SLogic (Subgraph-Informed Logical Rule learning), a novel framework that assigns query-dependent scores to logical rules. The core of SLogic is a context-aware scoring function. This framework is in line with the specificity principle in commonsense reasoning. This function determines the importance of a rule by analyzing the subgraph locally defined by the query's head entity, thereby enabling a differentiated weighting of rules specific to their local query contexts. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets show that SLogic achieves competitive performance among rule-based methods. It also generates query-dependent, human-readable logical rules that serve as explicit explanations for its inferences.

Understanding the Energy Cost of Quantized Agents on Shared GPUs

Stephen Abkin, Alex Flesher, Aldric Yang, Nitheesh Kodarapu, Deepak Panigrahy, David Kebo Houngninou

原文摘要

Quantization can lower the energy of language-model calls and free memory for serving more agents, but its benefit per completed task remains unclear when agents share a GPU. Measurements of fixed requests or isolated agents leave open how the agents' generated work interact with competition for compute and cache. We present a systematic study of precision and admission limits for two agent models on A100 deployments with 40 or 80 GB of memory, using coding and data-analysis tasks with independently verified outcomes. We replay recorded calls across precisions to isolate execution energy and cap the cache to test the value of freed memory. For both models with four admitted agents where requests fit in the cache, 4-bit weights with 16-bit activations execute the same calls with 10-25% less energy than 8-bit weights and activations. Despite this saving, extra work and fewer completions in live runs raise their energy per verified completion by 49%. Where requests compete for cache on the 40 GB deployment, 4-bit weights cost less, and capping their cache raises energy per verified completion by 34% with 16 agents. These results show how generated work and cache demand change the energy benefit of quantization, providing a practical basis for choosing precision and admission limits together.

Graph-Localized Coverage for Conformal Prediction on Inductive Graphs

Jinwen Xu, Qin Lu, Georgios B. Giannakis

原文摘要

Conformal prediction (CP) provides marginal coverage guarantees, but marginal coverage does not determine where prediction errors occur on a graph. Queries from different graph neighborhoods can exhibit substantially different levels of uncertainty even when aggregate coverage remains near its target. We introduce GLocalCP, an online CP framework for inductive node classification and edge prediction that combines marginal and graph-local calibration with uncertainty-adaptive prediction sets. Specifically, GLocalCP puts forth a novel uncertainty-adaptive nonconformality score that relies on the mutual information obtained from Monte-Carlo (MC) dropout based prediction. Then, it augments a global online threshold with a kernel-based local correction that propagates coverage feedback among similar graph queries. On the theoretical horizon, we establish pathwise $O(N^{-1/2})$ marginal calibration error without exchangeability or stationarity and, for the exact-kernel formulation, an explicit $O(N^{-1/2})$ graph-localized calibration guarantee. Experiments on seven node-classification and seven edge-prediction benchmarks show that similar marginal coverage can conceal substantially different local reliability. Our proposed GLocalCP maintains coverage near the target while consistently reducing graph-local calibration error. Uncertainty scaling in GLocalCP further reduces prediction-set size across all evaluated node and edge datasets while leaving marginal coverage essentially unchanged.

Real-Time Visual Obstruction Detection in Surgical Augmented Reality

Shih-Chin Yang, Yanming Xiu, Hanting Ye, Qi Chen, Elias Rotondo, Maria Gorlatova

原文摘要

Surgical augmented reality (AR) can provide contextual guidance by overlaying virtual annotations, tool cues, and procedural information onto the surgical workspace. However, the virtual content may obstruct task-relevant real-world information, such as surgical instruments, and interfere with users' perception during time-sensitive surgical tasks. In this paper, we investigate visual obstruction detection for surgical AR and present a latency-aware pipeline that combines vision-language model (VLM)-based surgical-object recognition with segmentation-based obstruction reasoning. To reduce inference overhead, the system adopts a cascaded small-to-large VLM architecture with segmentation-guided early exiting and attention-based visual token pruning. The small VLM handles easy frames when its key-object prediction is supported by segmentation consistency, while difficult frames are forwarded to a large VLM with pruned visual tokens. We construct a pseudo-AR surgical obstruction detection benchmark by overlaying virtual content onto surgical-tool images and labeling whether the virtual content obstructs task-relevant instruments. Evaluation results show that the proposed system achieves 87.43% obstruction detection accuracy with an average end-to-end latency of 479 ms, reducing latency by 62.90% compared with a cloud large-model baseline. These results demonstrate the feasibility of latency-aware obstruction detection for surgical AR and motivate future work on dynamic surgical videos, multi-object scenes, and clinically grounded AR guidance content.

Data-Efficient Kernel Methods for Learning Differential Equations and Their Solution Operators: Algorithms and Error Analysis

Bamdad Hosseini, Alexander Hsu, Yasamin Jalalian, Juan Felipe Osorio Ramirez, Houman Owhadi

原文摘要

We introduce a novel kernel-based framework for learning differential equations and their solution maps. The framework is efficient in its data requirements in terms of the number of observed states and the amount of data available per state. Our formulation also allows us to employ efficient Gauss-Newton-type optimization algorithms in the training procedure to improve accuracy and speed of the training procedure. We also support our algorithm with rigorous theoretical guarantees in the form of quantitative worst-case error bounds for the learned equation that can be extended to the subsequent solution operators under smoothness assumptions. Numerical benchmarks demonstrate significant improvements in computational complexity and robustness while achieving one to two orders of magnitude improvements in terms of accuracy compared to certain state-of-the-art algorithms.

TB-Transolver: Parallelized and Coherent Long-Horizon Rollouts via Temporal Bundling for Time-Dependent PDEs

Sidharth S. Menon, Ameya D. Jagtap

原文摘要

Transolver has recently gained widespread adoption for solving diverse physical problems on unstructured geometric meshes by leveraging its Physics-Attention mechanism, which seamlessly extends standard softmax attention to handle physical domains at scale. For time-dependent problems, existing literature relies on time-conditioned or autoregressive rollouts to preserve temporal causality while retaining Physics-Attention as the spatial backbone. However, a fundamental limitation of this formulation is its sequential execution model, wherein computational costs scale linearly with the temporal horizon, rendering standard Transolver inefficient for transient problems despite its exceptional spatial efficacy. This bottleneck has historically hindered its broader application in time-dependent physical modeling. To address this limitation, we introduce TB-Transolver (also referred to as Temporally Bundled Transolver), an efficient framework built on temporal bundling that scales Transolver for time-dependent PDEs. Furthermore, we propose \emph{spatiotemporal coherence} (${\rm C(K)}$) as a general metric to systematically quantify snapshot correlation within a temporal bundle, enabling the \emph{a priori} selection of optimal bundle widths using training data alone, thereby avoiding expensive grid searches. We demonstrate the computational efficacy of TB-Transolver across four physically distinct domains, namely, plasticity, fluid dynamics, reaction-diffusion, and global weather forecasting; achieving training speedups of up to $29\times$ over conventional autoregressive and time-conditioned baselines. Finally, these computational gains are further amplified through distributed multi-node and multi-GPU parallelism, yielding aggregated speedups of up to $45.6\times$ at optimal bundle widths for systems exhibiting high spatiotemporal coherence compared to single-GPU implementations.

StreamLTT: Risk Certification for Policy Selection under Stream Dependence

Jinwen Xu, Qin Lu

原文摘要

Learn-then-Test (LTT) provides a general framework for certifying deployment policies against a prescribed risk target, but its standard formulation targets a fixed population risk estimated from calibration losses. In sequential deployment, losses may instead be dependent and nonstationary, so the risk of a fixed policy can evolve with the observed history. We introduce StreamLTT, which replaces this fixed population risk with average predictable risk, defined by conditioning each decision's loss on the information available before its outcome is revealed. Conditional centering turns empirical deviations from this target into a martingale sum, enabling both a test that adapts to predictable variance and a finite-sample Hoeffding alternative. Combined with family-wise error rate control, StreamLTT yields a simultaneously certified policy region that supports subsequent deployment selection. Across seven forecasting datasets and seven deployment risks, StreamLTT places the certified frontier substantially closer to the prescribed risk target than IID, robust-variance, block-bootstrap, and concentration-based alternatives, while empirical family-wise error closely follows the prescribed level. A finite-sample ablation further shows that the predictable-risk formulation drives the tighter risk frontier, while adaptation to predictable variance makes more effective use of the available family-wise error budget. StreamLTT therefore extends risk-certified policy selection to dependent deployment streams by addressing both what risk should be certified and how it should be tested.

On the Primacy Bias in RLVR Training

原文摘要

Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Reward (RLVR) has emerged as a promising approach for enhancing the reasoning capabilities of large language models. However, it still remains unclear whether RLVR can extend reasoning capabilities beyond what is already encoded in the base model. In this paper, we study this question through the lens of primacy bias: the tendency of models to over-rely on already-learned representations, disproportionately improving performance on problems they already handle well while underexploring harder ones that require departing from those representations. Through our controlled experiments and large-scale analysis, we show that RLVR training on mixed data tends to further sharpen performance on easier problems while yielding only marginal gains on harder ones. We find that although hard problems lead to modest gains overall, they are actually the ones that help most in expanding the model's reasoning capabilities and pushing the representations. However, prolonged training on these hard problems may also hurt and lead to forgetting on easy problems. These findings help to better understand some of the prior conflicting observations about RLVR, specifically, why on (OOD) domains where the base model performs poorly, improvements on hard problems can expand reasoning; while on well-trained domains, forgetting can reduce performance and mask genuine gains obtained from hard problems.

LLM-based NPCs in Video Games: A Systematic Mapping Study

Dilan Mian, Jeremy Bradbury, Yann-Gaël Guéhéneuc, Fabio Petrillo, Cristiano Politowski

原文摘要

For decades, non-player characters (NPCs) have been driven by rule-based systems whose personalities and interactions are scripted before release. Large language models (LLMs) promise NPCs that converse openly, adapt to new situations, and behave in ways developers did not fully author, prompting a wave of research and commercial experimentation. Yet the field lacks a unified picture of what has been built, how well it works, and at what cost. We address this gap with a systematic mapping study of 377 papers from the academic literature, yielding 42 papers analysed against a main research question and ten sub-questions across four thematic axes. We provide the first quantitative characterisation of component adoption, latency, safety coverage, and reproducibility: short-term memory and world-state grounding are near-universal (60% and 69%), whereas long-term memory (31%), reflection (38%), and retrieval-augmented generation (14%) remain rare, and response times span 2.6 to 15 seconds. Finally, we identify six structural barriers to commercial adoption and offer evidence-based recommendations for developers and researchers.

Query-based Submodular Data Selection for Efficient Instruction Tuning

Zhenghao Zhao, Yasutomo Kawanishi, Huihuo Zheng, Michael E. Papka, Yan Yan

原文摘要

As large language models are fine-tuned for increasingly specialized tasks, their performance depends more on which training examples are selected than on how many. Given a large heterogeneous training pool and a small target set specifying the desired capability, targeted data selection aims to find a compact subset that maximizes downstream performance. Existing methods score each candidate independently against the target and select the top-ranked examples, yet this point-wise strategy ignores inter-example interactions: at tight budgets the selected subset is dominated by near-redundant points that waste capacity on overlapping information. We propose Query-based Submodular functions with Gradient-guided Synthesis (QSGS), which formulates targeted selection as a submodular graph cut over a gradient similarity graph. A modular relevance term pulls selected examples toward the target task, while a pairwise dispersion penalty suppresses intra-subset redundancy. The resulting objective balances target relevance and intra-subset redundancy using the same formulation across different selection budgets. Empirically, the benefit of diversity-aware selection becomes increasingly pronounced as the data budget decreases. To further close coverage gaps that no selection from existing data can bridge, we introduce a gradient-guided synthesis step that identifies under-covered target directions via residual subspace analysis and generates synthetic examples to fill them. Experiments on MMLU, BBH, and TydiQA across Llama-2, Llama-3, and Mistral, show that QSGS at a 0.5% budget matches or exceeds full-data performance on Mistral-7B, outperforms the strongest baseline across all benchmarks, and yields increasing gains as the budget shrinks.

Look Before You Launch: Learned Throughput Prediction for Hardware Selection in a Production Training Fleet

Hossein Askari, Wei Sun, Chenguang Zhu, Bin Zan, Sreen Tallam, Keyu Man

原文摘要

In mixed-vendor accelerator fleets, many training jobs can run on several hardware types, and the best choice depends on each job's throughput on each type. Routing a job needs a throughput estimate for every candidate type before the job runs. We present LEAP, a machine learning performance prediction service that predicts each training job's throughput on every candidate hardware type at submission time and ranks the candidates by predicted throughput per unit cost. It routes tens of thousands of training job attempts a day across hundreds of different model types and more than 20 hardware types in a production fleet. LEAP predicts throughput from submission-time training configuration, including each job's prior throughput. LEAP reaches an accuracy of 77% over 30 nightly retrains, higher than the lookup table it replaced and at least as high as every alternative model we tested, including fine-tuned language models. Over six months, the share of eligible training GPU-hours that received a ranking by LEAP grew from 58% to 95%, and we estimate that it saves about 3% of training computational cost. In this paper, we identify the drivers that actually move accuracy and those that do not. We offer these as lessons for teams building performance predictors at fleet scale.

Complexity of conjunctive regular path query homomorphisms

原文摘要

A graph database is a digraph whose arcs are labeled with symbols from a fixed alphabet. A regular graph pattern (RGP) is a digraph whose arcs are labeled with regular expressions over the alphabet. RGPs model navigational queries for graph databases called \emph{conjunctive regular path queries} (CRPQs). A match of a CRPQ in the database is witnessed by a special navigational homomorphism of the corresponding RGP to the database, where vertices of the RGP are mapped by a function $f$ to the vertices of the database, and for each arc $uv$ of the RGP, we require the existence of a walk in the database from $f(u)$ to $f(v)$, such that the word corresponding to the sequence of labels of that walk belongs to the regular language labeling the arc $uv$. We extend this definition to one of navigational homomorphisms between two RGPs, modeling a homomorphism-based form of CRPQ containment. We study the complexity of deciding the existence of such a homomorphism between RGPs. We show that this problem, in the case where general walks are considered, can still be solved by an EXPSPACE algorithm (just like general CRPQ Containment, which is known to be EXPSPACE-complete). In the case of simple paths or trails, in fact the navigational homomorphism problem considered here becomes much more tractable, as it is PSPACE-complete. We also study the problem for restricted RGPs over a unary alphabet, that arise from some applications like XPath or SPARQL. For this case, homomorphism-based CRPQ containment is in NP. We prove that certain interesting cases are in fact polynomial-time solvable.

Structured Priors: Towards an algebra of component priors for prior-data fitted networks

Thomas Bartz-Beielstein

原文摘要

Prior-data fitted networks are typically trained using synthetic data generated by a single, manually constructed generator. In cases where such a generator combines multiple components, e.g., in TabPFN, Mitra, or TabICLv2, this is achieved through a mixture using manually specified weights, the impact of which on the network only becomes apparent after pre-training. Instead of such a hand-built generator, this work proposes a structured prior: a small set of named component priors, linked by operators whose algebraic properties are formally proven and whose influence on the trained network has been validated. Within a measure-theoretic framework, the operators of mixture, convolution, amplitude scaling, local transform, and projection are defined. Their governing laws are proven. These operators are implemented in the macl2l software package. Experiments demonstrate that the implemented generators reproduce the identities within the resolution of a permutation test. Furthermore, it is shown that trained networks obey the distributive law; that a mixed prior composed of small components performs as well as or better than any individual component in seven out of eight open regression benchmarks; and that on two of these tables a structured prior reaches, with a ninth of the data budget, an error that a generic random-function prior does not reach even with the full budget. A theorem on model averaging demonstrates that networks trained on individual components constitute the Bayes predictor for the mixture, provided that the component networks are themselves the Bayes predictors for their respective priors. However, the pre-registered test of this averaged predictor with trained component networks failed, because the networks identify the generating component too rarely. The paper proposes a research program focused on the algebra of structured priors for prior-data fitted networks.

Opening the Box Changes the Cat: LLMs Detect Chain-of-Thought Monitoring - What now?

Amir Jalilifard, Marcos Medeiros Raimundo, Anderson Rocha

原文摘要

Chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning allows large language models (LLMs) to generate intermediate reasoning traces in natural language while solving complex tasks. These traces can support safety monitoring by exposing potentially harmful plans before actions are executed. In this work, we investigate the conditions under which LLMs infer the presence of CoT monitoring from direct and indirect environmental cues and examine how this inference affects their subsequent behavior. Our observations suggest that oversight is an interactive process: while a monitor inspects a model's reasoning, traces left by monitoring interventions can allow the model to infer that its thoughts are being observed and to adapt its behavior accordingly. We show that even subtle environmental cues, such as timing-related signals from timeouts and operation durations, can reveal the presence of monitoring and trigger models to adapt their behavior to evade oversight. Across repeated episodes and interaction loops, we further observe that models can form statistical estimates of the monitor's effectiveness and use these estimates to guide attempts to evade detection. These findings highlight the need to evaluate CoT-based oversight under adaptive conditions, where the monitoring process itself may influence the behavior it seeks to observe.

HybridSpec: Throughput-Aware Speculative Decoding for Hybrid GDN-MoE Models

Haiyu Wang, Sai Qian Zhang, Zechun Liu, Steven Li

原文摘要

In speculative decoding, parallel drafters such as DFlash make drafting cheap, so target verification dominates each round. A central choice is the verification length, the number of tokens that the target processes in each round. Verifying more draft tokens can accept more of them, but work after the first rejection is wasted. For hybrid target models that combine Gated DeltaNet (GDN) and mixture-of-experts (MoE) layers, verification time grows much faster with this length than for dense models. In a single-request profile of Qwen3.6-35B-A3B with DFlash, it grew by 71% from length 4 to 16, almost entirely in GDN and MoE layers, compared with 4%-6% for a dense Qwen3-4B target. Each GDN layer must update a recurrent state at every token and recover it at the end of the accepted prefix. The MoE cost depends on the experts that the tokens activate, which are known only once verification runs. We present HybridSpec, which selects the verification length on the GPU from draft-side acceptance estimates and measured target latency. Verification then runs this length plus one extra token up to the first MoE router, before any expert runs. There, a lightweight routing correction uses the observed expert assignments to decide whether to keep that token. The rest of verification runs only on the selected tokens. Block-parallel GDN kernels avoid storing a state after every token and reconstruct the accepted state of every GDN layer in one launch. In isolated benchmarks at verification lengths 4 to 16 with every draft token accepted, these kernels, including accepted-state reconstruction, are $1.54\times$-$4.04\times$ faster than the default kernels. With three GDN-MoE target models in single-request greedy decoding, HybridSpec is $1.75\times$-$1.88\times$ faster than autoregressive decoding and $1.30\times$-$1.33\times$ faster than DFlash.

Pareto Inefficiency of EFX

Sepideh Mahabadi, Prasanna Ramakrishnan, Jakub Tarnawski

原文摘要

We consider the problem of allocating indivisible goods to agents with additive valuations, under two classic notions of fairness and efficiency: envy-freeness up to any good (EFX) and Pareto optimality. While some of the earliest work on EFX showed that Pareto optimal EFX allocations may not exist if agents can have zero value for some goods, it has remained open whether the same is true when all values are positive. We present a simple instance in which every good has positive value to every agent, but no Pareto optimal EFX allocation exists. We then generalize to a family of instances showing that Pareto optimal $α$-EFX allocations may not exist for any $α> 2/3$.

Forgetting to Improve: Principled Data Removal in Active Learning

Manuel Wendl, Erik Englesson, Andreas Krause, Carl Henrik Ek

原文摘要

The uncertainty of a statistical model is most commonly factorized into an aleatoric and an epistemic part. This factorization changes how predictions are interpreted in downstream decision tasks. Importantly, except for the idealistic scenario with no model mismatch, the quantification is a characteristic of the model and not the data generating process. In this paper, we propose Forgetting to Improve a method that reduces this discrepancy by incorporating the task into the modeling framework. Our key insight is to acknowledge that in scenarios of model mismatch, data can have a detrimental effect on the modeling for a specific task. Based on this insight, we propose an influence function for Gaussian process models that allows for principled removal of detrimental data samples. We showcase the flexibility of this approach by demonstrating significant improvements across a range of tasks, including Bayesian optimization, model-based reinforcement learning, and transductive learning.

Dual-Node NVIDIA DGX Spark over Tailscale: A Remote-Access Testbed for Distributed LLM Training and Cyber-Threat-Intelligence Fine-Tuning

Vasanth Iyer

原文摘要

Practical evidence for multi-node training on desktop-class accelerators remains limited. This report presents a proof-of-concept deployment of distributed NanoChat pretraining across two NVIDIA DGX Spark systems, each with a GB10 Grace Blackwell system-on-chip and 128 GB of unified memory, administered remotely over a Tailscale mesh VPN and connected for training by a dedicated 200 Gb/s QSFP56 direct fiber link. PyTorch torchrun, DDP, and NCCL were configured with one process per node, a depth-20 NanoChat model, a device batch of 32 sequences per node, a 2,048-token context, and eight gradient-accumulation steps, giving 1,048,576 tokens per optimizer step for the 896.5-million-parameter model. The run took 4,980 steps over about four days, averaging 63.4 s of measured training time per step (about 16,540 tokens/s) and processing about 5.22 billion tokens. We document link configuration, container setup, interface binding, a step-zero evaluation bug that triggered NCCL timeouts, checkpointing, and troubleshooting lessons. We also built a cybersecurity fine-tuning dataset from 77 CISA advisories (338 training, 37 validation conversations) and compared a baseline SFT checkpoint against a CTI-augmented checkpoint on 17 held-out prompts with an Ollama-hosted LLM judge: CTI-specific categories improved while general-knowledge categories regressed, for a small overall change from 2.06 to 2.29 on a 0-10 scale. Version 2 adds a stage-2 fine-tune with a MITRE ATT&CK technique dictionary under a deterministic evaluation: in-dictionary ID-to-name lookup reaches 98.5%, yet none of 50 held-out IDs is named correctly, knowledge of held-out threat groups, software, campaigns, and vulnerabilities stays near zero, and general ability drops measurably. The study establishes feasibility rather than a scaling-efficiency claim.

Spatial and Temporal Super-Resolution and Denoising of Intracardiac 4D Flow MRI

Yusuf A. Ozturk, Jie Zheng, Fanwei Kong

原文摘要

Intracardiac flow is driven by complex, and time-varying cardiac motion and interaction with the heart valves, producing complex flow features that may provide valuable information for disease diagnosis and treatment planning. 4D Flow MRI enables non-invasive, time-resolved measurement of three-dimensional cardiovascular velocity fields. However, substantial noise and limited spatial and temporal resolution limit its ability to accurately resolve flow features. We propose 4D-MRAR (4D Magnetic Resonance Augmented Reconstruction), a deep learning (DL) method to super-resolve and denoise 4D Flow MRI data. Unlike prior DL methods that train and infer on static vascular regions, our method predicts intracardiac flow within hearts undergoing large deformation. Moreover, it uniquely allows for simultaneous super-resolution in 3D space and time. The method combines a residual convolutional neural network, a recurrent neural network, and an implicit neural field to predict high-resolution velocity and pressure fields while efficiently enforcing the governing equations of fluid flow during training. Trained on a synthetic dataset obtained from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of left ventricle (LV) flow, our method generalizes to synthetic whole-heart 4D flow MRI data, and demonstrated promising performance on real 4D Flow MRI. The produced super-resolved flow fields exhibit significantly improved accuracy and greater consistency with the governing equations of blood flow compared with prior methods.

On the (Quantum) Communication Complexity of Secure MPC from a Random Oracle

Alexander Hoover, Giuseppe Persiano, Kevin Yeo

原文摘要

Information-theoretic MPC among $n$ parties with $t$ corruptions can securely evaluate a circuit $C$ with $O(|C| \cdot t/(n-t))$ online communication in the preprocessing model and $O(|C| \cdot t/(n-2t))$ communication in the honest majority setting. Damgård, Larsen and Nielsen (CRYPTO 2019) showed that both communication bounds are tight for inner products. Fully homomorphic encryption and other assumptions known to imply public-key cryptography beat both communication bounds, but the communication complexity with symmetric-key cryptography alone is less understood. For MPC with preprocessing, we prove that the same $Ω(|C| \cdot t/(n-t))$ lower bound holds in the random oracle model, so a random oracle cannot reduce the online communication. For honest majority MPC relative to a random oracle, we present an $Ω(|C|)$ communication lower bound that is matched by a new construction for degree-2 polynomials (including inner products) when $n = O(\log λ)$, beating the information-theoretic bound. We also study quantum MPC. First, we prove that information-theoretic protocols with quantum communication (and preprocessing) cannot reduce communication compared to their classical counterparts. Furthermore, we extend our lower bound for MPC with preprocessing to protocols with a quantum-accessible random oracle, but use only classical communication. In contrast, with both quantum communication and a post-quantum one-way function, we present a simple two-party protocol that evaluates the two-party instance of these circuits with $\mathrm{poly}(λ, \log |C|)$ communication, beating these lower bounds. Finally, such communication savings do not come for free. We prove that there exist circuits $C$ such that every blackbox protocol with $o(|C|)$ quantum communication must perform $Ω(|C|)$ cryptographic operations.

Exploit or conform? How norm utility prompting changes the way LLMs use community beliefs

Leon Klingborg, Theodor Cimpeanu, Alexander J. Stewart

原文摘要

Large Language Models (LLMs) serve both as tools for aiding human decision-making in everyday life and as models of human agents in experimental simulation studies. Alignment on prototypical social decisions -- such as whether to cooperate on a collective action -- therefore has immediate practical consequences for researchers and for society at large. Here we systematically explore the impact of ``norm utility'' -- the non-material components of utility that account for an individual's desire to conform to social norms and to be internally consistent -- on the strategic decision-making of three open-weight LLMs in one-shot, two-player social dilemmas. We find that when a social dilemma is presented together with information about community beliefs -- but without any indication of how those beliefs should matter -- models tend to treat community belief as strategic information, so that in the Snowdrift game cooperation falls as community belief in cooperation increases. When we explicitly prompt the components of norm utility this relationship inverts, and cooperation increases with community belief, in broad agreement with the predictions of a simple norm utility model. We then show that prompting norm utility reduces the volatility of strategic decisions with respect to changes in the underlying social context, and generates more consistent reasoning habits across models. Taken together, our results suggest that prompting norm utility can help generate more human-like and consistent behavior across models and lower volatility within models.

Conformal-DP: A Density-Aware Mechanism for Differential Privacy over Riemannian Manifolds via Conformal Transformation

Peilin He, Liou Tang, M. Amin Rahimian, James Joshi

原文摘要

Differential Privacy (DP) is being increasingly adopted for non-Euclidean data that lie on complex, high-dimensional manifolds. Existing DP mechanisms for manifold data consider geometric properties when calibrating privacy perturbations, but they largely fail to capture variations in data density within datasets, leading to biased perturbations and suboptimal privacy-utility trade-offs due to heterogeneous data distributions. In this paper, we propose a novel density-aware differential privacy mechanism on Riemannian manifolds, referred to as Conformal-DP, that leverages conformal transformations to calibrate perturbations based on local densities and to induce a density-balanced geometry. We prove that our mechanism satisfies $ε$-differential privacy on any complete Riemannian manifold under mild regularity assumptions. In addition, we derive a closed-form expected geodesic error bound that depends only on the underlying data density ratio and is independent of global curvature. Our empirical results on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed Conformal-DP mechanism substantially improves the privacy-utility trade-off in heterogeneous data distribution settings, with worst-case performance comparable to state-of-the-art manifold DP mechanisms that assume uniformly distributed data.

A Systematic Analysis of the Predictive Power of LM Surprisal in Reading Chinese

Hongao Zhu, Muxiaoqiao Xu, Yikang Liu, Siyuan Song, Yuxia Wang, Byung-Doh Oh, Hai Hu

原文摘要

This study analyzes the predictive power of LM-derived, token-level surprisal on Mandarin Chinese reading times. Using a suite of Chinese-Pythia models (14M--1.4B) trained from scratch with 30B tokens, we examine how well surprisal predicts first fixation duration, gaze duration, and total reading time in three paragraph-level eye-tracking corpora of Mandarin Chinese (GECO-CN, HKP, and MECO). Contrary to previous null findings, our results show that surprisal is predictive of Chinese reading times. However, whether predictive power scales with model size and the amount of training is corpus-specific: bigger models predict reading times better in GECO-CN, whereas inverse scaling emerges in HKP and, at the largest sizes, in MECO. Subsequently, we find that checkpoints whose surprisal remains closer to $n$-gram statistics are better predictors of reading in HKP and MECO, providing one possible explanation for the inverse scaling behavior. All in all, the predictive power of surprisal on Chinese reading time measurements is corpus-specific, which cautions against drawing conclusions about language model scale from a single corpus.

Denoising Is Stein: Moment Access and a Resource Hierarchy for Learning Hidden Structure in Diffusion Models

Rui Wang

原文摘要

We study score learning from denoising pairs when the data contain a hidden non-Gaussian component. If covariance reveals the component, its subspace can be recovered directly. If covariance is isotropic, the first distinguishing moment has order $k^\ast$, and the learner must extract that moment from clean points and their noisy views. Correlations in the denoising loss are Stein discrepancies against a baseline; for polynomial fields they determine exactly the corresponding moment differences. Averaging fresh noisy views conditional on a clean point gives an exact moment query on the clean distribution. In the covariance-matched regime, orientation-independent dictionaries satisfying an $L^4/L^2$ condition need order $d^{k^\ast-1}$ features, and the stated dot-product kernel ridge models need the same power in samples. Small-step online SGD on one unit has this exponent up to logarithms. A two-stage learner uses the curvature of a smoothed denoising loss to recover the hidden direction, then sharpens it and fits a scalar readout. For every even $k^\ast$, it obtains a fixed score gain over the Gaussian baseline from $O(d^{k^\ast/2}\log d)$ clean points. In the covariance-visible regime, the frozen-feature threshold occurs at $d^J/J!$, while projection onto principal components makes the fitted-model, score-risk and generated-law distributions independent of ambient dimension. In the covariance-matched experiments, the measured partial-trace overlaps are consistent with the proposed spectral transition. A width-8 network trained with clean-point reuse shows a $d^2$-like training-set threshold over $d=64$--$192$, with fixed validation and calibration overhead.

Testing Processor Contracts in Speculative Decoding Engines

Tianyu Ding, Yaocheng Tong, Muzhi Yang, Lei Yang, Fei Jiang

原文摘要

Speculative sampling can accelerate decoding without changing the target distribution. Its standard guarantee assumes that logits processors, which enforce constraints or modify token scores, receive the appropriate token prefix and state at each verification position. We formalize this processor-prefix contract and present BADC (branch-aware differential conformance testing). BADC combines enumerated references on tiny random models, checks of processor inputs and state, and simultaneous confidence bounds on output-event probabilities. Preregistered, source-informed experiments on selected Transformers and llama-cpp-python releases confirm two causes: processors read unverified drafts or advance state without rollback. For one pilot-selected prompt on a trained checkpoint, fresh samples give a 60.26-percentage-point lower bound on the difference in the probability of a predefined first-token event between ordinary and prompt-lookup decoding, with nominal simultaneous 95% coverage under within-arm i.i.d. sampling. Controlled comparisons establish no cause-recovery advantage of directed selection over random selection, while permutation testing detects each tested family at least as often as BADC. These findings connect processor-interface failures to observable decoding differences without establishing diagnostic superiority or workload prevalence.

When Model Complexity Matters in Cross-Subject Naturalistic fMRI Prediction

Junhao Zhao, Jacob Kang, Colin Kurniawan, David Simberg, Nan Xu

原文摘要

Increasingly complex neural models predict blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) responses to naturalistic stimuli, but the predictive value of this added complexity remains unclear. We ask when pretrained stimulus representations help and how much downstream complexity is needed, with and without recent measured BOLD history. We compare linear diagnostic references and nonlinear predictors across HCP movie fMRI (154 subjects), BOLD Moments (10 subjects), and Algonauts 2025 (4 subjects). Under a shared offline protocol, models are fitted on training subjects and evaluated on held-out subjects viewing largely familiar stimuli, without refitting. Pretrained visual features generally improve prediction over raw pixels; for linear autoregression, this advantage becomes more pronounced over longer rollouts (recursive predictions without additional measured BOLD). Measured BOLD history provides substantial gains that generally diminish {as rollouts lengthen}. Nonlinear stimulus-only predictors can improve on linear readouts, whereas linear autoregression provides a strong history-conditioned baseline. Controls examine context length, regularization, fitting procedures, and model capacity. Regional response consistency across subjects is associated with held-out prediction accuracy, while less consistent regions tend to gain more from measured history. In paired simulations with fixed linear neural dynamics, slower hemodynamic responses generally sustain high temporal prediction correlations over longer rollouts, illustrating how the observation process can contribute to predictive persistence. Together, these findings support evaluating stimulus representations and downstream complexity separately, using history-conditioned linear prediction as a diagnostic reference under matched inputs and measurement availability.

FPT iff PTIME for Homomorphism Problems on Sparse-Incidence and Bounded-Independence Patterns

Matthias Lanzinger

原文摘要

We show that fixed-parameter tractability and polynomial-time solvability coincide for homomorphism problems specified by classes of pattern hypergraphs of bounded incidence degeneracy or bounded primal independence number, assuming $FPT \ne W[1]$. In both cases, tractability is characterised by bounded fractional hypertree width. This generalises a result of Grohe [JACM 2007] that established such an FPT-PTIME collapse for bounded-arity structures. We build on the fractional balanced-separator framework and rounding theorem of Korchemna, Lokshtanov, Saurabh, Surianarayanan, and Xue [FOCS 2024] to prove near-linear bounds on fractional hypertree width ($fhw$) in terms of adaptive width ($adw$). Namely, for every hypergraph $H$ $$fhw(H)=O(μ(H) adw(H)\log adw(H)), \quad fhw(H)=O(\log α(H) adw(H)\log adw(H))$$ where $μ(H)$ is the degeneracy of the incidence graph of $H$ and $α(H)$ the independence number of the primal graph of $H$. As a consequence, we obtain a corresponding FPT-PTIME collapse for exact homomorphism decision and counting on every class in which either incidence degeneracy or independence number is bounded. This includes a number of natural classes such as pattern hypergraphs of bounded degree. Additionally, we observe that for every r.e. class of pattern hypergraphs, fixed-parameter tractability of the parameterised homomorphism problem implies quasipolynomial-time solvability of the corresponding unparameterised problem, assuming $FPT \ne W[1]$. Our results rely on the characterisation of fixed-parameter tractable decision of homomorphism problems in terms of submodular width of Marx [JACM 2013], conditional on ETH. In light of the very recent potential refutation of the ETH, we show that the characterisation of Marx holds also under the assumption that $FPT \ne W[1]$.

Methods for Accelerating and Stabilizing Nonlinear Magnetic Equivalent-Circuit Analysis

Danial Kazemikia, Matthew Gardner

原文摘要

Design and optimization of electromagnetic devices require models that converge reliably and quickly and can represent intense localized magnetic saturation. This paper presents a parameterized 2D nonlinear magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) and proposes solution methods for it: an approximate Jacobian that is symmetric positive definite, so each Newton-Raphson iteration can use sparse Cholesky factorization with fill-reducing reordering, and Anderson mixing as step control. These methods are compared with alternative nonlinear iterations, linear solvers, and step-control methods in convergence, computational cost, and prediction accuracy. Radial-flux magnetic gears (RFMGs) with structural bridges serve as a challenging test case, because their thin bridges exhibit intense local saturation. The methods are evaluated on three bridged base designs and on 1,024 bridged designs, each paired with the same design without the bridge. On the base designs, Newton-Raphson iteration with the approximate Jacobian reached much lower residuals than fixed-point iteration, which converged for none of them. Sparse Cholesky factorization with reordering was the fastest linear solver tested. Across the 1,024 design pairs, full-step Newton-Raphson converged for 193 bridged and 564 bridge-free designs, whereas Anderson mixing converged for 1,003 and 1,022 and required fewer iterations. Bridged designs converged less often and more slowly under every method. The nonlinear MEC was 2.17 and 1.84 times faster than fixed-mesh nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) in total computation time for the bridged and bridge-free populations. The median outer-rotor torque discrepancy relative to FEA was 0.22%, and the Spearman rank correlations of the design rankings were at least 0.9996.
